Hi

Some days ago, I re-watched the episode 310 "Santa bites" of Chicago fire and, the idea of a One shot came to me mind. This one shot is based on the scene in which Brett gave Dawson one of her shirt for putting it at the bottom of her locker.

I really hope that you like this one shot and let me some reviews with your opinion. Besides, I would really appreciate if besides of giving me your opinion, you also give me a critical overview of the how it is written. Right now, I am studying for doing the IELTS exam in July and, your opinion will help me a lot. Thanks.

On the other side

Gabby was finishing of putting her stuff inside of her duffle bag and on a box. She could not wait the moment for going home. She was glad that the shift was finally over and the next watch was already in the firehouse getting ready for relieving them of their duties. She doubted if she would be able to continue another minute in the firehouse after the exhausting and long shift that she had. She wanted to come back home, lie down on her bed and fall asleep during at least a few hours before having to start with her daily routine. Nevertheless, she was feeling sad because that was her last shift on the firehouse fifty-one. Some months ago, she decided to go back to the ambulance. Now, it was time that she finished her last few months as a candidate however, this time it was going to be on a different firehouse.

With a sad smile in her lips, she grabbed her jacket and her duffel bag for hanging it of her right shoulder. However, on one of the handle of her bag, there was something hooked; it was a t-shirt. The t-shirt fell to the floor as she was closing the door of her metal locker.

"What is that?" she said kneeling for picking it up the garment. The t-shirt was of a pale pink tone and, she could dare to say that she had never seen it before. After looking the t-shirt closely for a few seconds, she concluded that definitely it did not belong to her. However, if it was not her t-shirt why it was on the bottom of her locker?

Suddenly, a flashback of a conversation that she had with Brett approximately one year ago came to her mind.

Gabby was taking out of the drier her clothes when Brett entered in the laundry room "Are you done with the washer?"

"What? Oh, yeah" Gabby was so distracted that she didn't hear her to enter on the laundry room

"Is there some kind of sign-in sheet for when we can use these?"

"Uh, no, it's more of a first-come first-serve" Gabby was staring at a grey t-shirt that she had on her hands and her mind was like in other part.

"You okay?" Sylvie asked when saw that Gabby was looking the t-shirt with a serious expression on her face. Gabby looked at her not knowing what to say so, she just gave her a simple smiled "There's not a lot of estrogen in this house, so if you ever want to download, I'm here" Brett smiled and got ready for putting her dirty clothes inside of the washer

"Thanks" Gabby hugged the t-shirt that she was holding and thought that maybe that was a good moment for downloading as Brett suggested her "I found this shirt at the bottom of my locker" She showed her the grey t-shirt. The front of the t-shirt had written in black letters "West Loops Women Auxiliary" and "Barbeque 2012" along with the drawing of a grill. Gabby folded the shirt and continue saying "It's, um it's from this barbeque a couple years ago, when I was a paramedic and Casey was engaged to this doctor, and" The image of Matt standing up in the middle of the pitch with the youngest of the Darden's boys hanging on his shoulder brought a smile on her lips. "I remember him playing with a couple of these kids in the park, and I don't know" the smile disappeared of her lips "I don't know, I guess it just things seemed simpler"

"Simpler?" Brett asked confused since it did not look as simple as Gabby thought it was. For her, it sound like it was more complicated than what was happening in that moment between her and the blonde Lieutenant "The man you loved was engaged to another woman"

"Yeah" Both women laughed and Gabby grabbed her hamper

"You're gonna look back a year from now and be on the other side of whatever's going on, I know that" Gabby bitter her lower lip and gave her a nod

And before Gabby could walked out of the laundry room, Brett grabbed something of her pile of dirty clothes and put it on Gabby's hamper "Here"

"What's this?" Gabby asked confused

"Put it in the bottom of your locker, and then a year from now when you find it, you can remember this day," She said smiling

Gabby looked at the t-shirt doubting of Brett's words. She was unsure of what the future will bring; she was not even sure if Matt would continue on her side any longer.

"Brett" Gabby let her bag on the floor and sat on the bench holding the t-shirt in the same way that she did will the t-shirt of the barbecue "You were right"

After Brett gave her the t-shirt, Dawson did what she told her and put the t-shirt at the bottom of her locker. She thought that she would never going to see the t-shirt again. However, she was wrong. A year later, the destiny wanted that she found the t-shirt and think about how much her life had changed since they had that conversation in the laundry room.

Now, she agreed with Brett; things did not seem to be as simple as she thought that were when Casey was engaged to Hallie and she was secretly in love of him. Not even for a second. She had no chances of being with him. Matt was handsome and could have chosen any woman; however, she was the one who he chose. That was the easiest part.

On the contrary, trying to balance their jobs with him being her lieutenant and her his candidate in the firehouse whereas at home they were lover was the complicate part. They needed to find a way of working things when it gets rough instead of being angry with the other.

During the break that they decided to take, they realized that being away from the other was not what they really wanted. Hence, they decided to start dating again but this time whit the promise of working out their problems in a different way. They agreed in trying to speak when things get rough between them instead of walking out every time they had a discussion. It had not been all sunshine and roses; but little by little, they were making progress. They were still working hard for making their relationship works. However and without any doubt, it was worth the effort.

"Hey, looks who it is" spoke a low and excited voice behind her.

Gabby turned around and a smile instantly sprang as she saw her two favorite boys in the world. Matt was standing up in the entrance of the locker room holding their two months old baby boy in his protective arms. The small baby was clung so tightly to Matt's shirt and looked up at her with his loving blue eyes that he got from his father.

"Hi" Gabby said

"You okay?" he asked as he walked over to her and sat on the bench.

"Yeah" She stroked her son's soft hair and placed softer kisses along the top of his head "I am fine"

"There isn't any kiss for me?" he asked with puppy's eyes

"Sure" she pressed her lips against his and gave him a tender kiss "When did my mother bring him?" She was looking at the baby with loving eyes

"While you were taking a shower" he looked to what she was holding and asked, "what is that?"

"I found it while I was cleaning my locker. It is one of Brett's t-shirt. She gave it to me a year ago," she said smiling

"Do I have to worry about something?" he said with a curious smile

"No" she laughed, "It was when I started my candidacy year on the truck 81 and things were rough between us. I needed to speak with somebody and there she was"

"Are you sure about move out to a different firehouse?"

"Matt, we have already talked about it" she began

"I know baby" He said "I just want to be sure that you are doing what you want. You know that I'm always going to support you, no matter what"

"I know," said Gabby and she held the baby "It's very weird leaving this firehouse. I don't know if I am ready"

"Gabby, you can do this" he rubbed her back "You are a hell of firefighter. You are gonna be okay"

"Alright" she got up of the bench and put the t-shirt on the box. The first thing that she was going to do when she arrived to the new firehouse was to put t-shirt at the bottom of her new locker with the hope of finding it again in the future. "Are you ready to go home? We have to rest to be at our best at Molly's tonight. I know that you guys are throwing me a farewell party"

"I do not say anything," he said raising his hands

They walked to Matt's office for taking his and the baby bag that were on his office. They walked through the bunker room for leaving the firehouse.

"Wait" Gabby, said as she walked nearby to Brett's bed. She gave him the baby and grabbed the baby bag of his shoulder. She opened the bag and grabbed something that was inside.

"What happen? His shirt is not dirty," he said when he saw that she had grabbed the extra t-shirt that there was on the baby bag.

"I know" She walked to Brett bed and said "It's your time for being on the other side Brett" and she put the t-shirt on her pillow.
