CSI of the Year?

"Nervous?" Jackie asked Nick as she tied his tie.

"A little. I really hope I don't win so I don't have to give this speech." He said with a grin.

"Oh, quit it, you'll do great." She assured him.

Nick had been nominated for CSI of the year for the state of Nevada, and it meant a lot because family, friends, and coworkers couldn't nominate you, only the families of the victims you help to bring justice for could nominate you. The nominations were anonymous so Nick didn't get to find out who nominated him but it made him feel amazing that a victim's family had thought so highly of him.

A victim's family has to nominate a CSI by writing a letter to the higher ups and then the higher ups vote on which three letters should grant a nomination and whoever had nominated Nick must have written a very nice letter because his was one of the three finalists.

"You, look amazing." Jackie told him as she placed a kiss on his cheek.

"Thank you, you look awesome yourself, I love your dress, although I can't wait to get it off of you tonight." He said with a grin.

She laughed.

"Don't hold your breath on that one dear." She told him.

"I'll go get the door." Nick said as the doorbell rang, it was the gang from the lab, they were all going to support Nick and they decided to all go together.

Jackie's parents were nice enough to watch the kids for the evening. "The CSI of the year is looking sharp." Greg said as he stepped into the house.

"Thanks Greg." Nick said with a chuckle.

"You guys all look nice too." He told all of his friends.

"Nick, can you fasten this necklace for me please?" Jackie said as she came out of the bedroom.

"Hi guys." Jackie greeted all of their friends with a smile.

"Thanks." Jackie said as Nick got the necklace on for her.

They got to the banquet hall and then found their table.

"I wish they would announce who won before dinner, I want to know if I have to give this speech or not." Nick said.

"Relax hon, you aren't ever nervous to speak in front of people, just pretend you are in a courtroom." Jackie advised.

"That's a good idea. Thanks."

"This prime rib is to die for." Jackie said.

"Yeah it's delicious." Catherine and Greg agreed while everyone else shook their heads in agreement.

"How's you vegetarian lasagna Sara?" Catherine asked.

"Awesome, this event certainly didn't skimp on the food that's for sure." Sara said.

"Yeah and I heard they have chocolate cheesecake for dessert." Morgan said.

"Yum." Russell said, cheesecake is his favorite.

The dessert was even better than the main course.

"Now comes the part of the evening we've all been waiting for." The host of the evening announced into his microphone.

Everyone cheered. "All the nominees here tonight are winners of course. The third place winner will receive a $250 gift certificate to a local grocery store, the second place winner will have an all expense paid weekend for them and a guest at the fabulous resort up in Blue Diamond."

"That place is awesome, Nick and I went there a few years back, it was breathtaking." Jackie whispered.

"Yeah, it is really pretty, I've been up there for work." Catherine agreed.

"And the first place winner will receive a trophy and an all expense paid trip to the Cayman Islands for them and a guest." The host continued.

Everyone clapped and cheered again.

After everyone had quieted down the host continued "CSI'S when I announce your names please come up to the podium."

The three nominees nodded.

"These are in no particular order, the first nominee is Steven Peterman from the Ely Crime Lab." Everyone cheered as he went to the podium.

"The second nominee is Sara Grisham from the Reno crime lab." Again everyone cheered as the CSI headed to the podium.

"That's too eerie." Sara whispered to Catherine.

Catherine shook her head in agreement, as everyone else at the table was wide eyed in amazement.

"The final nominee for CSI of the year is Jackie Stokes from the Las Vegas Crime Lab."

Everyone around the table looked at each other blankly.

"Oh whoops, I am so sorry, I read my card incorrectly here, Jackie is his spouse, the nominee is Nick Stokes."

Everyone at Nick's table went nuts.

Once Nick was at the podium the host continued, he wasted no time.

"The third place winner is Steven Peterman from the Ely Crime Lab."

The crowd applauded as Steven Peterman shook Nick's and the other CSI'S hand before taking his gift card.

"The second place winner is." The host said, pausing for dramatic effect.

"Nick Stokes from the Las Vegas Crime Lab." He finished.

Nick gave Jackie and all of his friends a big smile as he shook hands with the other CSI'S.

Jackie thought his face showed a slight reveal of relief.

"I love you." Jackie mouthed with a proud smile.

He gave her a huge smile slight wink back.

"And that means that the winner of the 2014 CSI of the year is Sara Grisham from the Reno Crime Lab, let's give her and every CSI in the state of Nevada a huge round of applause."

Everyone in the room stood up and went crazy. The winner then began her speech, Nick sat back down next to Jackie at their table, relieved about not having to give a speech.

After the speech from the winner the party died down and people were about to leave, Nick's group got their coats on.

"Guys I'll be right back, I have to go use the restroom." Jackie told them.

When Jackie had finished using the restroom she was washing her hands when a woman entered the bathroom, it was a woman she recognized, it was Sara Grisham, the winner.

"Hi, congratulations." Jackie said with a sincere smile.

"Thank you, you're Nick Stokes' wife right?"

"Yes." Jackie said.

"I saw the two of you walk into the building hand in hand. You'll love that resort, it is beautiful." The winning CSI replied.

"Yeah, it's gorgeous." Jackie agreed.

"I'm really excited about going to the Caymans, my husband and I don't get that much vacation time together."

"I've never been there before but a couple of my friends have and they absolutely loved it." Jackie told her.

Sara smiled but Jackie detected a hint of sadness in her eyes, but she didn't want to pry so she didn't say anything but Sara seemed to read her mind.

"As excited as I am about going to the Caymans I'd trade it in a heartbeat for something you're getting." She replied.

"The resort trip?" Jackie asked confusedly.

"No." Sara said as she took a couple steps towards Jackie.

"May I?" She asked Jackie.

"Sure." Jackie said, not sure what she was going to do.

"This." She said as she softly laid a hand on Jackie's baby bump.

Jackie smiled softly at her.

"My husband Mark and I have been trying for two years to get pregnant with no luck yet."

"I'm sorry, I hope it happens for you soon. They say it happens when you relax, maybe this trip to the Caymans is just the relaxation you'll need." Jackie told her, trying to make her feel better.

"Maybe I'll come back with a souvenir, you mean?" She asked with a smile.

"You never know, just don't lose hope." Jackie advised with a smile.

"Thank you, good luck with the baby, and have fun at the resort."

"Thank you, enjoy the Caymans and I wish you the best of luck."

"Honey, you ok?" She heard Nick call in the hallway, he was starting to get concerned, she'd been in there for a while.

"I'm fine, I'll be there in a minute." Jackie replied.

"Ok, no rush, I was just checking on you." He called back.

"We better go. I'm sure Mark is waiting for me too."

"Ok, it was nice meeting you, once again congratulations, and good luck with everything." Jackie told her.

"Thank you, same to you."

The two women then walked out of the bathroom. After they had gotten home and out of their clothes and into their pajamas Jackie told Nick about running into Sara Grisham and about what the two ladies had talked about.

"You know Nicky, if this trip is what Sara and her husband need for her to finally get pregnant then I'm glad she won, don't get me wrong, you are a fantastic CSI and you deserved to win but in the end winning an award isn't what is important."

"I agree with you completely. It's not about an award, it's about doing your job the right way, and more importantly it's about the people that are in your life that mean the most to you and the relationships you develop with people, and like you I hope that Sara gets pregnant while on her vacation."

"I love you, and you may not have won the CSI of the year award but to me you're definitely the husband of the year, and you've had that coveted award for quite some time now." Jackie told him with a grin.

"Thank you, I'd rather have that award, just do me a favor will you?" Nick asked with a slight smile.

"What's that?" She asked.

"Remember that I'm husband of the year when you're in labor ok?" He said with a grin.

"I'll try, no promises though." Jackie said with a laugh.

Nick laughed and grabbed her hand.

"Well what do you say, shall we look over everything that is included in this resort package." Nick asked.

"Sure, why not?"

"Hey look here Jacks it says that with the package you get a free massage, manicure, and pedicure at the hotel spa." Nick said as he looked over the brochure.

"It also says that it is mandatory to give that to your very pregnant wife right?" Jackie asked with a grin.

"No, I'm not seeing that anywhere in here." He said with a grin as he pretended to squint to read the fine print.

"Well if you'd like to keep that husband of the year status you will."

"Oh yes, it says it right here." He said.

She laughed.

"I love you." He told her.

"I love you too Nicky, and not just because you're giving me that spa package." She replied.

He burst out laughing.

"What do you say that I give you a quick back massage and then we hit the hay?"

"I'd say that is an offer that I can't refuse." To Nick it truly didn't matter that he had come in second place for CSI of the year, as long as the families of the victim's that he works with, and his friends, and most importantly Jackie and his children think he is number one then he figured he was doing something right!

The End!
