Universe: Big Hero 6
Summary: Between peanuts and panic, friends and family are always there for Hiro when he finds himself in need of them most.
Note: Wrote this last night between 10.30pm to 1am on paper and typed it up this morning. So it should be okay, but blame exhaustion for any mistakes. First story of the gang and Baymax, with no Tadashi... I watched the movie again last night with a friend and my emotions I just asdfghjkl. Anyway, enjoy and please review~
"Hiro. You're doing it again."
It was movie night at GoGo's house, but after half an hour Fred and Wasabi had failed to pick a film, instead arguing about how Superman could fly (since he had no wings or otherwise no flying material like Baymax had, was Wasabi's point).
"Oh, right. Sorry, GoGo," Hiro hastily responded to the girl's comment, and took his hand off the coffee table; apparently drumming his fingers in boredom while they waited irritated their host.
Hiro, Honey Lemon and GoGo were spread on the big couch in the living room of the latter's small house, half listening to the debate of the boys in the adjacent storage room, where GoGo kept most of her stuff, such as games and films.
Baymax was with them tonight, standing at the back of the room examining something of GoGo's that fascinated him. They had been off on an impromptu mission earlier in the afternoon, by the time of which they were free, it was practically time for their entertainment evening.
"Guys just pick a goddamn movie!" GoGo suddenly yelled towards the storage room. The boys stopped arguing immediately, no one wanting to rival GoGo's temper when she was annoyed.
Finally, a couple of minutes later, Wasabi came out of the room, followed by Fred. The two went to the TV and set up the movie without telling the others what it was. Fred had decided weeks ago that it was much more interesting that way.
Said teenager grinned at Hiro as he took a seat in an armchair beside the couch.
"I think you'll love this, little dude," Fred enthused with a small jump in his seat at apparent excitement. Hiro smiled; Fred's general enthusiasm almost always made him smile.
"If you say so," he replied with a casual shrug, turning his gaze to the TV screen, where the film was just starting and the title showed up.
About an hour later, Hiro had to admit that Fred was right - again. Yes, he loved this movie a lot, like most of the ones that the boys chose. This one explained and reasoned all the machines that the humans built to keep the enemies at bay.
Eyes on the TV screen, Hiro didn't notice Honey passing him a bowl of snacks until she pointedly poked him in the shoulder.
"Hey-! Oh, sorry, Honey... thanks." Hiro took the bowl from his friend with an apologetic smile before turning back to the TV. He absently took a handful of the snack mixture and passed the bowl to Fred, who received it with a wink.
Munching on the snacks and watching the movie, Hiro automatically took the bowl back from Fred and took another handful before passing it back to Honey Lemon. Absently, he scratched his forearm in response to itching, barely paying attention to anything but the movie, which was about to reach the plot twist in the middle.
Just as the main character made the conclusion that would change the whole rest of the film, Honey interrupted Hiro's rapid train of thought (he was trying to figure out why the enemies wanted the Earth's riches before it was revealed on the movie).
"Hiro... what's wrong with your arm?"
Blinking, Hiro turned to his left to see the concerned gaze of Honey Lemon. "Hmm?" He replied vaguely, not focusing.
"Your arm. What's wrong?" She repeated, this time pointing to his exposed forearm - it was too warm with all of them in the same space to wear a jacket while watching the movie.
Hiro glanced down and did a double take, now ignoring the sounds coming from the movie. Where he had been absent-mindedly scratching for the past five minutes was now a pattern of red hives on his skin.
Experimentally, though also to try to calm down, Hiro tried to take a deep breath. He noticed his wheezing as he failed to take a proper breath, resulting in breathing quicker and shallow as Hiro began to panic.
"Uh, GoGo, what was in the snacks?" Hiro asked as calmly as he could around Honey Lemon.
GoGo popped a bubble with a sharp snap in her mouth and reached for the bowl, taking it from Wasabi, and peered critically at the innocent-looking food as Wasabi watched her with a frown.
"Hm, bombay mix, dried fruit and nuts," she replied, looking up at Hiro. "Why?"
With the rest of the team now looking curiously at Hiro instead of watching the movie, he tried to ignore them as he increasingly frantically went through his pockets, searching but not finding.
"Dammit... Tadashi always had one... not good..." Hiro muttered as his search drew up empty.
At the mention of their late best friend, the rest of the team shared worried looks, now alarmed about what was wrong with their youngest member.
Before they could talk to him, though, Hiro abruptly stood up, again trying and failing to take a proper breath, and swaying. Honey immediately jumped to her feet and took the boy by his arm to steady him.
"Hiro?" She asked anxiously, glancing at the other members for help when he didn't respond.
"Baymax!" Wasabi, Honey, GoGo and Fred called at the same time, desperation clear in their voices even as some tried to hide it.
As Baymax waddled over, GoGo got up and took Hiro's other arm, and the two girls guided him back to sit down, Honey trying to shush the boy as he got more panicked, mind practically frozen in fear. He was stuck... Tadashi was always there, always equipped...
"Hello. What is the problem?" Baymax greeted the five teenagers, raising a hand in a brief wave.
"Something's wrong with Hiro and he's panicking, he won't tell us what it is!" Honey relayed urgently.
Baymax tilted his head. "I shall scan him," the nursebot replied, immediately acting at the news that his best friend was in distress.
"Scan complete. Hiro is going into anaphalactic shock, and in addition is panicking about this state, in both emotional and physical distress. Diagnosis: mild peanut allergy reaction and panic attack from post traumatic stress disorder - more specifically, the absence of Tadashi in this situation."
Finishing his diagnosis, Baymax swiftly moved onto treatment, ignoring the shocked and sad faces of the others, and addressing Hiro directly in his usual clear voice.
"Hiro, do you not have an epi-pen with you?" Baymax asked, waiting until Hiro nodded in a jerky fashion before continuing. "Tadashi would always have one; is this your emotional distress?"
"Yes," Hiro gasped, wheezing audibly as he came out of his dissociation and focused on Baymax. "He... he always..."
Taking a step closer to Hiro, Baymax patted his charge's messy hair. "It will be alright. I will take care of you. Tadashi is here," he comforted the boy. "I will administer an epi-pen now, which will stop the allergic reaction. Please hold still and keep calm," Baymax announced in his usual soothing tone of voice.
The nursebot bent down and carefully rolled Hiro's shorts up a little way on his left leg. Baymax produced a needle on his forefinger and carefully inserted it in to Hiro's thigh with an apology, "this will hurt briefly, please stay still."
Hiro gasped in pain and squeezed his eyes closed, his face very pale. Honey and GoGo exchanged nervous and worried looks with each other past the boy inbetween them.
"It is done." Baymax straightened up and addressed Hiro again. "Your heart rate is beginning to slow and you should be able to breathe easily again. Your panic is also receding as you recover."
Hiro swallowed and opened his eyes, taking a deep breath and succeeding. "Thanks, Baymax," he sighed, relief flooding him.
"You are welcome. I am here to look after you, Hiro." The nursebot held out his arms and asked, "would you like a hug? Physical reassurance after a crisis is recommended for a good emotional recovery."
Without hesitated, Hiro nodded silently and got up, practically falling into his best friend's arms, who hugged him back with just as much love that some would suggest a robot could not be capable of. But they knew better.
Fred quickly stood up too and announced loudly, "group hug!" He threw his arms around Baymax and Hiro with a sigh of pleasure. The others waited for only a second then all joined in - except for GoGo, who casually got up and lightly just leaned against the everyone else, surveying the room as though bored.
"A person who is recovering requires support and physical reassurance from family members and friends," Baymax said appreciatively, patting Hiro's wild hair, making the kid laugh a little.
"We know, Baymax. Thank you," he replied affectionately, breaking from the robot's embrace and smiling up at him. Then he glanced around at his friends. "And, uh, sorry for freaking out, guys... it's just..." he uncomfortably tried to explain, looking down and rubbing the back of his neck.
Honey immediately drew him into a tight hug too. "We understand, Hiro. It's okay. We're here for you, always," she said softly.
Hiro nodded and Honey drew back, looking critically at the boy's face, where colour was returning now he was okay again.
"Yeah, maybe just tell us your allergies before you eat random food," Wasabi advised dryly, smiling at the boy, who nodded again with a sheepish smile.
GoGo lightly hit him on the shoulder. "Woman up," she said firmly, but paused to pat his shoulder as well before she threw herself back down on the couch, reminding everyone that they were meant to be watching the movie.
Fred, as usual, once again became enthused. "Yeah! Let's watch the second half of this again because no one was watching it!" He cheered, grabbing the remote and rewinding the film to continue from where they all lost focus.
Wasabi chuckled as he sat back down, and Honey Lemon took hold of Hiro again, pulling him back down beside her on the couch.
Hiro looked at Baymax, who was still standing in front of him, not being able to leave until his patient was alright. "Stick around, buddy," Hiro smiled softly, and he meant it. The nursebot nodded in acknowledgement of the sincerity of friendship behind Hiro's words, and walked in his peculiar way to one side of the couch, sitting on the floor with a bump and turning his attention to the TV in mild interest.
Taking an easy breath, Hiro looked around him. He had amazing friends and a robot hand-programmed by his own brother. Tadashi would never be gone as long as Hiro and his team were around. They were family now. Hiro smiled to himself and glanced at Fred, who was excitedly ranting about something the character just did.
As long as Hiro had his family, he would always be alright in the end.
