It was 2:00 am when everything went to shit.
I didn't expect it to happen, well I don't think anyone did. But I sure as hell didn't. I couldn't have ever anticipated a thing like that. Something that would have changed my life as drastically as that one thing did.
2:00 am.
Well, I guess you could say 2:09 am, because that was when it actually happened.
So then, 2:09 am.
I was wandering around camp, trying to walk off a simple nightmare. Not bad, but enough to shock me out of sleep. So a walk seemed the best idea. That walk, to which seemed so lonely at first, led me to the beach, where I found another person there.
Annabeth.
Yes, Annabeth Chase, Architect of Olympus, great girlfriend… for a while at least.
So, she was there, and I chose to sit next to her in the sand, and she probably knew I was coming long before then because she didn't start when I took my place to her right. She just quietly mumbled a "hey" and continued to stare off into the ocean.
I kept my gaze on her for a second, then looked in the same direction as her as I chuckled lightly, mumbling back, "You know… for a daughter of Athena, you sure do love the ocean…"
"After so much time with you, I've learned to appreciate the water for its beauty."
"That's true. Just like how much I've learned about architecture from you." I smiled, glancing just slightly at her to my left.
She smiled too. "You don't know anything about architecture."
I laughed.
It got tense soon after my laughter died out, and she sighed heavily.
"Percy…" she whispered.
"Hm."
"I think we should end things between us… romantically, I mean." She pulled her eyes form the sea to gaze at me, possible to search for anger, sadness, any sort of negative emotion.
"Me too."
Yeah, I know. Shocking right? I agree to end things with the love of my life. But honestly, we grew apart afters the war against Gaia. I had no intention of letting her leave my life completely, but that spark, that interest, had long since disappeared.
"Wait, really?" she said.
"Yeah, things aren't the same. Well, nothing's the same these days."
I can't remember the look she had on her face, but I know she had mixed emotions, and that it took many thoughts in her mind before she had decided to shuffle towards me, wrapping her arms around my neck for a hug. I slid my left hand around her waist, pulling her slightly closer to me.
This was us saying goodbye. Not forever, that was almost obvious in the hug and the unspoken words we shared, but we knew that from that moment on, we weren't together anymore.
But that was ok.
That was a moment I will never forget, because like I said, this was when everything went to shit.
Because after then, things deteriorated.
Everything began to die.
And so that, I guess you could say... that was the beginning of the end.
