Of all the places Regina thought she would end up for advice, sitting stiffly on Doctor Hopper's couch was not on the list. Dressed impeccably as always — pale skin, full red lips and dark eyes — Regina looked authoritatively at the short, curly-haired man.
"Well?" she asked as her eyebrow arched aristocratically, the slight movement the only indication of her distress.
Doctor Hopper cleared his throat. "How long has this been going on?" he asked as clinically as he could though his tone belayed his personal interest.
Regina cocked her head to the side as she pondered his last question. The exact timing was hard to pinpoint. "Two weeks," she responded with certainty. In truth, she'd first noticed something was amiss a little over a month ago, but it was not until later that she grew concerned enough to seek advice.
"I see," Doctor Hopper mused as he bit on the tip of his pen. His brow furrowed in thought. He seemed to come to some kind of conclusion because he met Regina's intense gaze and said, "I might be wrong, but you're probably concerned over nothing."
Regina was at a loss. She knew deep down that something was wrong with Henry. He suddenly started acting strange; he was moody and argumentative in complete contrast to his normal, easygoing demeanor. Except for the brief time when Henry rebelled against her in favor of Emma, Henry was always the model child. He was concerned, caring, and he always listened to instructions. For no apparent reason, he decided to become moody and downright argumentative, refusing to do anything she asked him to.
Her eyes darkened and she shifted on the couch so her back was perfectly straight. "I know my son, Doctor, and something is wrong with him."
Regina first voiced her concerns to Emma, but instead of agreeing with her, Henry's blonde mother had only shook her head and said that Henry was simply being a teenager. No kid should have been as perfect and good as he always was. Regina did not buy Emma's excuse, so that was how she ended up here.
"At Henry's age, it is perfectly normal for him to be feeling rebellious. Give him time and it will pass," Doctor Hopper counseled in what he intended to be a wise manner.
Even though Doctor Hopper's advice was well-intentioned, Regina bristled at the implication that she was simply overreacting — she was not. She knew her son and something was going on with him, something she needed to find out. She highly doubted his newfound personality was due to hormonal changes or a need to rebel against authority figures. Those qualities simply were not like him.
"I see," Regina agreed aloud despite her doubts. Doctor Hopper was not going to be swayed to agree with her, so his advice was all but useless. It was better not to waste her time trying to convince him otherwise. She shifted in her seat as she made to stand up. "Thank you for your time, Doctor," she said neutrally.
Doctor Hopper sprung out of his seat in response. "Regina, I don't think we're done here..."
"Yes, we are," Regina snapped. If he was no inclined to believe her she did not want to waste her breath. She was done. No one else seemed to notice or care that Henry was acting differently. If she had to figure it out on her own, she would. "Good day," she said much more calmly as she spun on her heel and strode from the room leaving behind a shocked Doctor Hopper.
The doctor ran his hand through his curly hair as he watched her leave. A frown settled over his face once he realized that she was not going to come back. Regina seemed particularly stressed, and experience taught him that a stressed and therefore worried Regina had certain tendencies that were best avoided altogether.
Regina, on the other hand, gave no indication to any passerby that she was unsettled. All anyone else would be able to see was calm, collected Mayor Mills. Internally, worry gnawed at her gut. She mentally prepared herself to go home and face Henry. With every intent of prying the information she needed out of Henry's unwilling lips, Regina began to formulate a plan. It was going to be a long night.
