Ch. 1

The day in Gotham was bright sunny today with a slight chance of rain later on in the evening. Small transparent clouds covered small parts of the sky as I looked at them. I then glanced at my clock and then sighed at the time. Today was the only day I had any kind of break from my daily duties I had to do at Wayne Enterprises.

"Sir!"

I blinked and realized it was Alfred who was calling me through the headpiece I had connected to my ear. I clicked the piece and started walking through the bustling Main Street of Gotham.

"What is it Alfred?"

I asked him.

"Sir, I've collected all of the footage and information for the girl you've been looking into. I have to say, Sir, her past is rather devastating but she cleans up well in her teenage years. It seems that she now lives on her own in Atlanta."

I stopped walking to look both ways before crossing the street.

"Atlanta, Georgia? Seems like a huge city for just one teenage girl..."

I said with a chuckle. He cleared his throat and I could feel him nodding on the other end of the line.

"Yes well, if you want to take a look at all of the information, it's here waiting for you Mr. Wayne."

"Alright thank you Alfred, I'm on my way."

I replied as I called for a car I had reserved for today. The black transferring car drove just outside of the city and in front of my house in which I liked to call it the 'Wayne Manor.' I stepped out of the car and bid the kind driver farewell with a 500 dollar tip. What can I say; he brought me home.

"Alfred, I'm home. I would like to see those files now."

I told him as I stepped down the long staircase that went down into the Bat Cave. The cave's lights instantly turned on at the motion of me; they always did. Alfred followed close behind me with a pitcher of water in one hand and a wash towel in the other. He set them down on the table and began retrieving the files while I sat at my chair in front of the computer.

"Richard will be here shortly...Do try to be a little bit nicer to him Mr. Wayne. He's only thirteen and can only take so much."

He said as he walked back over to me. It was true I acted very serious around my companion, otherwise known as 'Robin.' But I was like that to everyone who knew of my identity.

"He's tough, he'll get over it. Now is the video footage long, because I don't want Richard finding out about this girl just yet. She has promising abilities but I'm still not sure on whether she's right for the team."

Alfred gave me a grim look and nodded.

"In total, the footage is about two hours long and it covers from when she was five to a couple of years ago. I will leave you to watch them because frankly, I don't have the heart to watch it again. I will tend to Mr. Grayson for as long as I can."

He said to me as he left the Bat Cave. I stared at the footage on my desk and got a little worried by how Alfred described it. I slowly put the tape into the large computer screen in front of me and sat back in my chair. It started with a little girl with beautiful blond hair. She looked happy with her Mother who had gave her her looks. I couldn't help but smile at the cute little girl in front of me. But I soon found out that that little girl's happiness wouldn't last long...

(Alfred's Pov)

It had been thirty minutes since I last left Mr. Wayne to watch the footage before Richard came up in the drive-way on his motorcycle. He came running in with an excited smile and I sighed as I knew I had listen to whatever story he had in store for me. I rested my chin on my palm as he started talking about God-knows-what.

"And that's how my day went..."

He said finally after an hour and a half. He never faltered his smile as he grabbed an apple and proceeded to wash it before taking a bite out of the fruit.

"So Wally and I were talking and...We think we should get tougher missions than what the B-man has been giving us. I sighed and shook my head.

"If you think I'm going to persuade him, you're wrong. Just go along with what the master says and you will get better operations in due time."

He simply rolled his eyes at me while taking another bite of the apple. Just then, Bruce came in from the Bat Cave below and rubbed the bridge of his nose in stress. Richard looked at him weird and tilted his head.

"What's wrong with you?"

He asked him. His mentor just waved him off leaving the teenage boy to simply shrug. Mr. Wayne walked up next to me and then stared at Richard; which meant that he needed to leave the room...NOW. The boy groaned in annoyance and rolled his eyes as he trodded out of the kitchen. I turned to Bruce and waited for a response.

"Alfred, call the league for a meeting. We need to take a vote and discuss the girl."

He said. I nodded in understanding and smiled.

"I'll get right on it, Sir."

(Bruce's POV)

I tightened the gloves around my hand deeply as I looked at the people in front of me. I had known most of them a long time and have gotten the chance to trust them. The league members in front of me waited anxiously for me to start the meeting.

"So this is about...Scarlett Reagan?"

Wonder Woman asked me as she scanned the file in front of her. I nodded and turned my head to everyone.

"Yes, this..."

I clicked the screen to show a picture of a little girl with long blond hair.

"...is Scarlett Elizabeth Reagan. She is the girl who we will be discussing about today. As you know, the Justice League has thousands of portable cameras around the United States to find the next prodigy. We have files on every baby who is born with powers and we have followed each one in great detail. Now this girl, Scarlett, does not use her special abilities until later in her life. However, we must review her history as well as her state of mind. We don't want any unstable members joining the league..."

I said as they nodded. The flash crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair.

"So...what's the deal with this girl? Is she a nomination for the young justice team?"

He questioned with a grin.

"Yes she is. After we watch her footage, we will take a vote. Is everyone ready?"

They nodded in response and I flicked the lights off; turning on the footage while I was at it. I sat next to superman and saw the familiar picture of the little girl with her Mother. She laughed and played with her Mom in the open yard of grass. They were playing a simple game of catch with a tiny rubber ball. After their game, Scarlett hugged her Mother with as much love as she could. Her parent smiled sweetly at her daughter and brushed her hair with the softness of her fingers. I silently groaned as I remembered what would happen next. The screen jumped to a view of Scarlett at the age of eight. She stood next to a hospital bed with her Mother rested in it.

"Honey, your Mommy has brain cancer; She won't be able to talk to you."

The nurse said to the little girl who insisted on tugging at the bed sheets. The girl frowned and tilted her head.

"What is cancer? Why can't mommy talk to me? Is she mad at me?"

The girl asked. The nurse sighed and shook her head.

"No baby, your Mom isn't mad at you. She has brain cancer; which is a bad thing to have. She can't talk to you because her brain's not feeling really good...Does that make sense, sweetie?"

"I guess so...I hope she gets better..."

Scarlett said softly. What happened next disgusted me. A man walked into the room, obviously drunk, and stared at the woman in the bed.

"Fucking bitch, too weak to even get up and make me dinner..."

He slurred as he looked at his daughter.

"Scarlett! Come on, we're leaving!"

He screamed angrily. The nurse gasped and got in front of the girl in protection.

"Sir, you need to leave now. That kind of behavior is not permitted at any time during hospital hours. You..."

The man pushed her rudely out of the way and interuppted her.

"There's no way I'm letting some slut tell me what to do! Scarlett, get over here! Now!"

He yelled as he snatched Scarlett's wrist and stomped out of the room. The camera followed them in the hall to see the girl was crying.

"But I want Mommy to come too!"

"Shut up! She's gonna die! You hear me!"

He said as he shook her tiny shoulders. She sobbed loudly and he brought his hand across her face. She screamed and he cupped her mouth.

"Yep, you're a screamer...Just like your slut of a Mother."

He said as the screen went black. Some of the league members were shaking their heads in anger while the others tried to hide their emotions. The screen cut back on to view the girl a little bigger than we had last seen her. She was probably nine or ten now and she sat in the room alone. She stared at her arms, which had belt marks on it, and cried softly. She concealed her sounds when her Father yelled from the other room.

"You better not be crying in there! I'll give you a reason to cry!"

He screamed as she wiped her face in fear. She sighed and walked over to her bed; pulling out a book from under it and began to read it. The footage showed that her 'Dad' never let her go to school for the risk of her seeking help from the authorities. He kept her inside the dirty house and inside her room. He didn't know it, but she kept textbooks that her deceased Mother had gotten her before she died. She read them over and over again until they sunk into her brain. She also loved to read books; including such things as Charles Dickens and J.K Rowling.

"Scarlett! Get in here, your dinner's ready!"

She heard him scream. She closed the book, hid it under the bed, and walked into the small kitchen. Her Father stood there with a plate in his hand and shoved it in hers

"Now go eat in your room! I can't bare to look at your ugly ass face any longer! And I don't want to hear a word after you finish it! You go straight to bed or I'll slap the shit out of you again!"

She quickly walked into her room and closed the behind her. She set the plate down and stared at the food; all she had to eat was a piece of bread, some meat, and a small glass of slightly-dirtied water. She let tears flow down her cheeks again as she ate the disgusting looking food. She never forgot to pray before she ate though. She seemed grateful for even that much.

"Poor girl..."

Hawk Woman muttered as she watched.

"Some people in this world..."

Superman said after her. After dinner, the girl slid the plate under her door and went to bed.

"You didn't leave any for me!? Fuck you!"

Her Father yelled as he picked up the plate. He ate more things in one night than she did in a week...

"Ugly ass selfish bitch..."

He said to himself. She yelped in hurt feelings and brought her thin pillow to her face. Unlike what her Dad said, she was a beautiful young girl with the prettiest hair of blond. Her skin was creamy-colored and her eyes were a soft shade of emerald green.

"Please tell me this gets better."

Wonder Woman said as she looked at me. I grunted in response because honestly, it didn't. The screen cut to Scarlett brushing her long hair. She was about thirteen now and her features had matured because of puberty.

"Scarlett! Go get the beer from the fridge! Now!"

She heard him yell. She rolled her eyes and walked out of the room to find him drinking and smoking at the same time; real smart...she shook her head and walked out of the house and to the fridge in the front yard. To say it plainly, this man was beyond white trash. She proceeded to get the beer until a scream made her stop.

"Ahhhhh!"

She heard her Dad scream. She ran to the open door to find the whole house in flames. He had probably dropped the alcohol on the cigarette and then it spreaded to the rest of the matches. She gasped and stepped away from the house in fear.

"Dad!? Dad!?"

She yelled in the soft voice of hers. A part of the roof caved in and she screamed in shock.

"Dad where are..."

She stopped when she saw him drag himself to the door. He was covered in flames and yelling out at her.

"Help me! Scarlett!"

He said. Being the good-natured girl she was, she reached her hands for him carefully. He grabbed them but instead of letting her pull him out, he tried to pull her in. She screamed in pain as her hands burned with the fire he gave her. She slapped her hands away after a few seconds of pure shock and turned to run.

"If I'm going to Hell, you are too!"

He screamed as he grabbed her by her bare foot; making her fall the ground. The flames spreaded to her feet as well and she cried out in pain. She tried to kick him off but he seemed too strong for her.

"Get off..."

She whimpered; he didn't listen at all.

"GET OFF!"

She screamed louder as light formed into her hand. The light formed a shape of a hammer and she smashed it to his hands. He let go quickly and she jumped back. He would've screamed from the hammer she had smashed on his hands but he gave in to the flames. His head hit the ground hard and the whole roof collasped on top of him.

"Oh my God! Scarlett! Scarlett!"

A young woman screamed as she ran over to her. The teenage girl was crying loudly from the severe burns on her hands and feet. The woman, her neighbor, picked her up and drove her to the hospital. There, the doctors took Scarlett in immediatly and patched her hands and feet up. The screen went black again then jumped to Scarlett thinking out loud.

"What was that...? That light..."

She muttered in question. She winced as she moved her hands which were still bandaged and then the screen went black for good. The whole room was silent after the footage had ended. Most of the women were wiping away tears while the men stared at the long table in front of them. I sighed and turned on the lights.

"Well that is the girl we are going to discuss about now. Scarlett has the power to manipulate light. She can form light particles and form them into any shape she chooses. She can also change her looks that deal with light such as the color of her eyes. She is now fifteen and living in an apartment in Atlanta. The woman who had saved her bought her that apartment and visits her every week to make sure she alright. She felt she needed to be alone after that incident that had happened two years ago."

I finally said. Wonder Woman nodded and leaned forward.

"Is she mentally stable? Something like that could really mess someone up."

She said. I nodded.

"Yes, she has accepted her past but does not speak about it probably. However, information states that she has formed a kind of Hapnophobia; meaning that she doesn't really liked to be touched and doesn't trust people. I'm sure you can imagine why...But she doesn't panic if someone does touch her; she simply removes their hand kindly and goes on with her day."

The league nodded in understanding. I really wanted to have this girl on the Young Justice team but I needed every member's vote.

"What about her hands and feet?"

Asked Hawk Girl.

"Oh yes, she has gotten very special treatment for that. The doctors, however, have stated that the burns will never fully heal. Today, she is required to wear specially-fitted gloves that cover and protect her hands from hurting. For her feet, she must always wear specialized socks that produce the same job as her gloves. Scarlett is also required to rub a healing lotion on her hands and feet every week. The lotion helps maintain the skin that is still there."

I told them as I clicked the projector to show a picture of her gloved-hands. They were light brown, thin, and tight to her hands to make it not look like she was wearing huge gloves on her hands. The Ghost Hunter nodded as he looked at the picture and then at me.

"Alright, but can she go into hand-to-hand combat with those gloves on?"

I smiled and nodded.

"Yes, they are built for self-defense and protection so she will not feel any pain when fighting if she wears them. Now, anymore questions? No? Well then, let's take a vote on whether Scarlett Reagan should be on the Young Justice team. Vote carefully when choosing."

They thought for a moment before writing down on their note pads and passing them to me. It took them two minutes to decide which could've been a good thing or a bad thing. The last note was passed to me and I looked at them all. They all were unanimous.

"Alright, she will be on the team then."

Black Canary stood up and laid her palms on the table.

"Batman, if I may ask, I would like to be Scarlett's Mentor while she is here. I believe I can help her with her abilities. I am also capable of helping her free her body from her past experiences. If she works with me, I can surely destroy that little phobia of hers."

The blond trainer said to me. I nodded as I began to walk out the room.

"Yes I think that would be an excellent idea, Canary. Meeting is dismissed for now. I will go retrieve the girl in Atlanta. Canary, you're in charge of the Young Justice team's missions."

I hope Scarlett wants to come with me. If she resists, it might be a problem. I wish we could've gotten the footage earlier and saved her from that hell hole. What am I saying? If the government knew we had cameras everywhere in the nation, they would go against us in a second...

(Scarlett's POV)

I walked through the streets of Atlanta with a smile on my face. It was raining slightly but I loved the rain. It made me feel like I would never go thirsty. I twirled my umbrella in boredom as I practically skipped through the tiny shops on my right. There was never really anything there for me but I loved looking at all of the expensive stuff the stores had for sale. Rain hit my long blond hair that I have put in a pony tail today as I walked back to my apartment. It was in a nice community in the city filled with people who were always nice to me; a massive improvement from the last home I lived in...

"Home sweet home."

I said with a grin as I reached my apartment. It was big for the typical apartment you would see in a suburban neighborhood and that's just how I liked it. I got out my key but stopped when I noticed it was unlocked. I stared at the door before slowly turning the knob. It could've been my caretaker, Sylvia, visiting me again but I somehow doubted that. I walked in to find...Batman in my kitchen?"

I dropped my umbrella and gave him a look.

"Batman?"

I said as I cracked my gloved-knuckles; just in case in wasn't him. He stood up and nodded.

"Yes, and you must be Scarlett Reagan. Am I right?"

I nodded slowly and laughed nervously.

"It's cool that Batman is standing in front of me and I don't mean to be rude but...what are you doing in my home?"

He kept his serious look as he walked over to me.

"I'm here to talk to you about your 'special abilities.'"

I gasped silently and closed the apartment door behind me. How did he know I had powers? I looked at the ground and sighed before crossing my arms.

"Okay...why?"

"To discuss with you about your joining of the Young Justice league."

I blinked a couple of times before I could comprehend what he had just said.

"Young Justice League?"

And that is the end of the first chapter! I hope I did good with it so far. Now it's the first chapter so it's not going to be real exciting but it will get better with the next one.
