Epilogue

Kagome placed the brush on the small wooden board.

You will have to make a choice.

She smiled at the words and stood up. Leaving the book open for the ink to dry. There was noisy childish commotion outside. Giggles of a girl and the chatter of another familiar voice.

She made her way outside and looked at the scene not far away. A wooden toll spinning around followed by girl chasing it. A young kitsune sitting on the ground manipulating the item like it were a haunted object.

There was a rustle of grass beneath footsteps behind her. She didn't even look back. The steady calm pace. She knew who it was even though. She had not seen him for months, but then again, she wasn't his main objective whenever he did visit this village. And her house was on the other side, so there were hardly any encounters with him either. But something had brought him here now.

Kagome waited for the footsteps to stop before she spoke. "Have you paid a visit to Rin and Kohaku?"

"Yes," the male voice confirmed.

She smiled. "It is nice to have a guardian like that." She didn't need to look to know that his eyes had come to rest upon her. The sudden deep inhalation through his nose from him made her nervous – a tight feeling in her stomach a forebode of what would follow.

"The child's scent is different."

Her heart entered a quicker beat. Of course he would know. Recognize.

"She is not Inuyasha's," he added.

She felt somewhat happy that he used his name. No 'half-breed'. Even in the future the demon had not done so. It was kind from him to address the hanyou that way. Considerate.

"No." The word left her mouth soft, needlessly. A useless validation. She waited for another reaction from him. When there was none she looked up.

Somehow his eyes had become softer as he looked at her. It was hers to guess what was on his mind. She felt the need to break the odd silence. "I don't know if he knows. If he does, I guess he is too much of a gentleman to say."

"He has enhanced senses, but he is still only half demon. His scent and mine are alike, yet slightly different. If you know what to look for it can be filtered."

Perhaps Inuyasha didn't know. He once told her that Sesshomaru had an even far better sense of smell than his own, because Sesshomaru was a full dog demon. Because of that the demon had sensed the Wind Scar on Tessaiga so easily. Way before Inuyasha had figured it out.

"Are you going to tell him?" A fear like a flame had been ignited in her heart. She watched him staring at her daughter in the distance. Their daughter…

"A decade of separation And a timespan of five hundred years. A lot can happen in such time, miko."

"Yes… I suppose so."

Although she was curious what he was thinking she left it like that. That was another time. Almost another world. He didn't ask anymore, didn't say anything. It did, however, feel weird standing beside him like that, being so close to him like that. In this world there was a distance between them, one she had dared to cross so boldly in her own timeline. Seeking for answers, seeking for help. Seeking comfort…

It was comforting that he didn't stare at her with disbelieve. That he could never find it possible. And in the softened features she saw his lips forming something that was almost a smile. She returned it with a little smile of her own.

"She looks like her mother," he then said as he looked at the child again.

The girl had a fair complexion, golden eyes and soft white hair. No dog ears – regretfully – but pointed elfin like ears. In the great biological gene pool lotto, her daughter had not won the cute dog ear lot. The girl almost looked like a full Inu youkai, only without the markings. She would have been exotic beauty in my time, Kagome mused.

Suddenly he turned around. "Miko." She looked back. There was a grunt from him. "Keep her away from wolves."

She laughed softly. Turning to face the scene in front of her, the young fox demon letting her ride a toy horse. "What about kitsune?" The sound of a clearing throat and the smacking of lips made her look back again. There was a grin on his face before his mouth slightly opened and fangs became visible.

"I'll get back to you on that."

THE END

A/N: In 2015 I started this story and now 4.5 years later it as finished. I am fully aware that there could be a lot of readers who do not like this ending, but this ending has always been planned like this when I started this story.

I started as a non-sesskag shipper with this story being an experiment to write something that could make this pairing believable canon. And with every new update I grew a fondness for this ship, too. However, I still do not picture them romantically in the same way as InuKag. It is because of the difference in their characters. My main goal was keeping them in character throughout and creating a realistic SessKag story. Also, without any Inuyasha bashing, nor throwing Kikyo in the mix for just the complication of it and as an excuse to have that love triangle thing again, as is seen in so many SessKag fanfiction.

A thank you to all my readers who followed this fic all the way to the end. It was one hell of a ride ^^
