Nanny Diaries:
Olivia Pope was stuffing her last bag into the trunk of her Dodge as her boyfriend Jake started up the Uhual truck full of her furniture. Today was the beginning of the rest of her life. Olivia had graduated from Harvard Valedvictorian with a degree in Political Science and History. Next, she was supposed to be preparing for law school but she didn't want to be a lawyer. Once she told her father, he quickly told her to go to law school or find someone else to support her life style- shopping, concerts, new shoes, and traveling. 4 generations of lawyers and Olivia, the youngest of 5, didn't want that for her life.
So here she is, moving into an apartment with her best friend since elementary school.
"Hello Liv." Stephen greeted her as she pulled up in front of the building. "How are you?"
"I'm adjusting. I really hoped my dad would change his mind by now, guess not."
"He's probably thinking the same thing." Jake added.
It took four hours for everything to get into the apartment, and into the right place.
"Thanks again for everything Stephen. I don't know what I'd do without you." she said and hugged him.
"It's no problem, none at all, especially since your brother and Adnan moved in together." Olivia's twin ,older, brother Harrison (who was older by 7 minutes and 41 seconds) was practically genius. He graduated from high school a year early, with honors, got accepted into all of the top 5 ivy league schools, and was a star basketball player. He met his fiance two years ago in undergrad and they've been inseparable ever since.
"Well aren't I lucky then." Olivia, Stephen, Georgia (his girlfriend), and their friend Abby were all eating pizza in the living room watching movies.
"Have you looked at jobs yet" Abby asked. "The bar around the corner is looking for a bartender." Jake burst into laughter.
"I'm going to get a real job, I'm a Harvard grad."
And this is how she found herself standing on the front porch of Senator Grant interviewing for a nanny position three weeks later.
"Hello miss Pope, Mr. Grant will see you now." Olivia stood and followed the older woman to the living room. Senator Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III was sitting on the couch between his 7 year old son Gerry and his 3 year old Karen. The children were quiet and smiled as Olivia took her seat across from them. But Mr Grant, he had a look so intense on his face but so soft at the same time. His sparkling blue eyes so filled with love.
"Well, um, Miss P-pope. Um, Olivia. Tell me about yourself."
"Well I am 23. Just graduated valedictorian from Harvard, I have a degree in Poli Sci. I received my CDC when I graduated high school to better find babysitting jobs. I honestly don't know what I want to do with my life so here I am."
"What about your family?" he asked.
"I am the youngest of 5. I have a twin brother named Harrison. I come from a family of lawyers. My father is the Pope of Pope and Associates International. Which is currently being ran by my older siblings. My mother was a nurse but she died when I was little."
"Sorry to hear that." She waved him off with a smile.
"It's no big deal. Tell me about what you're looking for in a caretaker."
"Someone young enough to chase down these two, someone experienced, someone smart, and uh yeah."
"I think I am extremely qualified. Are they always this quiet."
"Oh god no! I just expressed to them how well they needed to behave."
"So what would a typical day entail?"
"Well the day begins bright and early around 6:30. I usually leave around 7:30. Gerry wakes first gets dressed and ready for school, he's in first grade. While he's getting ready, you'd prepare breakfast. By 7 he needs to be eating and miss Karen should be woken up. She'll eat. 7:30 I'll bring Gerry to school. You'll be with her all the time. You'd run errands- dry cleaning, groceries, anything the kids will need. She has playgroup at 2pm. You'll drop her off then go to Gerry's school by 3 to pick him up then take him to the park or something to let him get rid of energy. Then at 4 pick up Karen, come home. Gerry will do homework, keep Karen someway occupied and make dinner. Then I'll be home no later than 8- unless I have a business trip or something which you'l know.
"Wow, that's a lot. You'll have to write that out." Olivia replied.
"Is this you accepting?"
"Is this you offering?"
Both wore a wide smile. She stood and shook his hand.
"Here's my cell phone number, give me a call tonight and we can go over the details."
"Thank you very much Mr Grant. I will see you kids later."
Fitz watched her walk to her car and all he could think about is the feeling in his gut. The feeling that she is supposed to be in their lives forever.
