Johanna awoke to Prim staring her in the face. "Where's Katniss?"
"She went to talk to the guy who hit us," said Prim. "She's gonna try to convince him that the accident was his fault and he should pay for damages."
"Poor guy," said Johanna.
"Yeah," said Prim. "Anyways, I'm supposed to look after you while she's gone."
Johanna rubbed her eyes. "I'm fine right now. I took some painkillers a few hours ago."
"Okay." Prim pointed to the nightstand. "I left the painkillers there in case you need them."
"So you're leaving me alone with powerful narcotics?" said Johanna.
"Would you rather have me be alone with the powerful narcotics?" said Prim. "How do you think Katniss would react to that?"
Johanna chuckled. "Just leave them on the nightstand then."
"So long as you're doing alright," said Prim. "I'll be downstairs if you need me."
"Well I'll try to get back to sleep," said Johanna.
"Good." Prim headed out of the room. Before she left, she turned around. "Hey Jo, can I ask you a question?"
"What?" said Johanna.
"How'd you two meet?" said Prim. "You and Katniss that is."
"Ah," said Johanna. "Well I guess it makes sense you'd ask, with me living here and all."
"I'm just curious," said Prim.
"Okay," said Johanna. "It all started at a school dance."
Katniss got in the elevator and pressed the button for the ballroom floor. A few floors down, the elevator stopped and the doors opened. In walked a girl in a green dress. Katniss recognized her as Johanna from school. She was about to say something when Johanna started to take off her dress.
"Um, excuse me!" said Katniss.
Johanna jumped. "Oh my god!"
"What are you doing?" said Katniss.
"Look, I...I thought my dress was on backwards," stammered Johanna. "And I...I couldn't find the bathroom...and I didn't see you there."
"So you don't check if other people are around when you strip naked?" said Katniss.
"I'm so sorry." Johanna quickly got back into her dress and exited the elevator as soon as the doors opened.
"So that's how it happened?" said Prim. "You accidently flashed her and it was love at first sight?"
"Sorta," said Johanna. "Next week I decided to track her down and say sorry."
Johanna found Katniss sitting only in the cafeteria, eating a sandwich filled with some kind of meat that Johanna couldn't tell. "Hey."
"Hey." Katniss barely looked up from her lunch.
Johanna sat down. "About last Friday."
"What about last Friday?" Katniss took another bite from her sandwich. Some meat fell out onto the table.
"Well how about how I accidently flashed you?" said Johanna. "Remember that?"
Katniss turned red. "Yeah."
"Look, I just wanted to say sorry about that," said Johanna.
"Okay, I accept your apology," said Katniss. "Now leave."
"Alright." Johanna got up to leave. She paused. "Hey, what kind of meat is that?"
"Turkey," said Katniss.
"Really?" said Johanna. "That's supposed to be turkey? What, did you kill the turkey yourself?"
"Yes actually," said Katniss.
Johanna laughed. "Wait, you're being serious?"
"Yes," said Katniss, clearly annoyed. "I killed three turkeys last sunday. I've been eating them all week."
"Is that all you've got to eat?" said Johanna. Katniss didn't answer. "You know, you can have some of my lunch, if you want."
"I've already got a lunch," said Katniss.
"Okay," said Johanna. "Then let my buy you dinner."
"Why?" said Katniss.
"You know," said Johanna. "To make up for me flashing you."
Katniss laughed. "Don't take this as a compliment, but seeing you naked really wasn't that traumatic."
"Fine," said Johanna. "You know where to reach me if you change your mind."
"Your sister got tired of turkey a few days later and took me up on my offer," said Johanna. "We went to this Italian place, Anthony's."
"Yeah," said Prim. "They have the best food."
"Anyways we decided to go on Friday," said Johanna. "That was when your mom had the night off and could look after you. Katniss picked me up."
"Seriously?" said Prim. "So you let Katniss drive?"
"I was naïve," said Johanna.
When Johanna got out of the Everdeen car, she was visibly shaking. "Can you believe that guy?" said Katniss. "It's not my fault he left his bike in the middle of the street."
"You could have at least said sorry," said Johanna.
"It wasn't my fault," said Katniss.
Johanna shrugged. By now she realized it was pointless to argue with Katniss. The two proceeded to get inside Anthony's. They were greeted by a girl in her early twenties. She smiled at them, but that smile disappeared when she got a good look at Katniss. Anthony's was something of an upscale restaurant, so Katniss's "Mentally Disordered" shirt raised some red flags. The girl showed them to a booth none the less. She handed them a menu, which Johanna didn't need to look at.
"I'll have the gnocchi alfredo," said Johanna.
"Same here," said Katniss.
"Have you tried it before?" said Johanna.
"No," said Katniss. "I haven't eaten here before."
"Well you made a good choice," said Johanna.
"Okay," said Katniss. She took a drink of water and tried to avoid making eye contact with Johanna.
"So Katniss," said Johanna. "Do you like hunting turkeys?"
"Um...yeah I guess," said Katniss. "I mean it's nice to be out alone in the woods."
"I see," said Johanna. "So do you just hunt turkeys or do you catch other animals?"
"I catch other animals," said Katniss. "Why wouldn't I? It's food."
"Right," said Johanna. "So what kinds of animals do you catch? Like have you killed a deer?"
"Yeah," said Katniss.
"Did you eat it?" said Johanna.
"Yeah," said Katniss. "Hey, I'm gonna use the bathroom."
"Okay," said Johanna.
Katniss got up and left for the bathroom. She was gone for a long time, only reappearing when their food arrived. "There you are. I was beginning to think you'd fallen in."
"Ha ha." Katniss sat down and reached for her spoon.
"You don't want to do that," said Johanna. "You eat gnocchi with a fork."
"Thanks." Katniss had just taken a spoonful of gnocchi, which had rolled of off her spoon. Katniss picked up her fork and grabbed a dumpling. Johanna watched as Katniss put the dumpling in her mouth and took a bite.
"So what do you think?" said Johanna.
Katniss swallowed. "Good. It tastes good. Thanks for suggesting it."
"You're welcome," said Johanna.
Katniss turned her attention to her food, not stopping until her plate was completely clean. Johanna wasn't even done with her food and Katniss was already ready for the check. She sat there bored, waiting for Johanna to finish. "So Jo, have you ever been hunting?"
"No," said Johanna. "Can't say that I have."
"Okay," said Katniss.
"Do you use a gun when you go hunting?" Johanna put a forkful of food in her mouth.
"No," said Katniss. "I use a bow."
"Really?" said Johanna. "You hunt with a bow and arrow?"
"Yeah," said Katniss.
"I didn't know people still did that," said Johanna. "Cool, I guess. So is there like an archery club you go to or something?"
"No," said Katniss. "I had to teach myself."
"Where'd you practice?" said Johanna.
"I set up some targets in my backyard," said Katniss.
"Huh," said Johanna. "You're not pulling my leg or anything?"
"No," said Katniss. "I practice after school everyday. I can show you if you want to come over."
"Okay, sounds fun," said Johanna. Johanna finished her food and the two waited for the check. When the check arrived, Katniss reached for it. "No, I've got this."
"I can pay," said Katniss. "I've got the money."
"I know," said Johanna. "But this is on me."
"Fine," said Katniss. "But then I'm paying next time. That way we'll be even."
"Katniss, I'm not doing this to hold something over you," said Johanna. "I'm doing this 'cause we're friends."
"We're friends?" said Katniss.
"Yes," said Johanna. "Why would I invite you to dinner if we weren't friends?"
"You could be trying to get in my pants," said Katniss.
Johanna laughed. "Here, I'll pay for dinner this time and we'll split the check next time."
"Works for me," said Katniss.
"Hey so where do you want to go next time?" said Johanna.
"I dunno," said Katniss. "How about Mexican?"
"So the week after that I took her to this great Mexican place," said Johanna. "And three weeks after that we had our first kiss."
"And it all started because you accidently flashed Katniss," said Prim.
"Pretty much," said Johanna.
"It's nowhere near as romantic when Katniss tells it," said Prim.
"She's very direct," said Johanna.
"So true," said Prim. "Well, I've kept you awake enough."
"No," said Johanna. "It was a welcome distraction."
"Anyways, I'll be downstairs if you need me." Prim headed downstairs. Johanna laid her head down on her pillow and went back to sleep.
