Wind beneath my Wings of Freedom

Summary: My name is Kagome. Since the end of my adventures down the well, I've been living in what one might say was an 'alternate universe'. And maybe that's true...the world I knew, was no longer. I came up through the well of a family I had never met...and was taken in by them. I became a storyteller...a tutor...and the caregiver of the orphans near the outer wall Maria in the city Shiganshina. "To them...I'm just a story teller...but to the kids, it's hope that my words reveal."

She Who Severed the Strings of Time

I won't delve too deeply into my past...not right now. Not if I don't have to. However, what I will say, is that the world I live in now, is about as diverse as they come.

The world I live in now...is nothing more than a glorified ranch, with the humans being little more than livestock. Fodder for the large ones...the titans...or whatever they were.

Needless to say, I'm not in Japan anymore. If I were to go by clothing, I'd say I'm somewhere in Europe, Germany perhaps...but nowhere close to Japanese civilization. Despite that, the people here speak fluent English, so I can count myself lucky for the required English Literature classes we had forced upon us in school.

A little over a year ago, I was found bleeding to death right beside a well by a man named Grisha Yeager. From him, I attained a job once he healed me. I was also brought into the Yeager household once it became apparent that I had no family. Kalura Yeager, Grisha's wife, had in fact been the one to offer me a home. I declined at first, not wanting to be a freeloader. But she persuaded me; said that it wouldn't be free. I was to help her with the kid's studies and the chores. Then when Grisha would leave for Sina, I would go with him for my job as a tutor. I don't know how he got me such a job, but he did. Upon my return, I helped Kalura with the house cleaning and cooking, then my favorite part, I went in search of her two kids. Mikasa...and Eren...both of which I would often find playing with Armin, a little boy their age who lived not that far away with his Grandfather. I knew Mikasa was adopted. I heard the story from Grisha...

This was all great...what I didn't like...was the secrets. Respectfully, however, I didn't push to figure them out. I could smell the dishonesties kept within the cellar of the floor. I could smell something similar to the blood of the titans...that scent which lingered on the other side of the wall Maria. My only question...why?

"What of the salt!? Tell him, tell him about the salt!"

Kagome smiled at Armin. He, Mikasa, and Eren loved to come to her for stories about what lay on the other side of the walls. She had gone up to the top a few times, though it was high enough that no one ever noticed her or cared to look in that direction. "You mean Salt Water?"

"Yeah!"

"Impossible Armin, I'm telling you, if there was salt in water, we would be finding ways to harvest it."

Kagome grinned, "but the truth of the matter is that there are large bodies of water that contain salt, and they cover the majority of the earth, or so I recall. Use to, we could harvest the salt from the water, but in passing years...creatures began to appear, and we had to hide." Kagome frowned, 'or so the older teachers and tutors tell me.' Turning her frown into a smile, she changed the topic, "thousands of beautiful animals would roam the earth, animals you could only dream of seeing now. Foxes, and peacocks, beautiful tigers and bears...now...we have deer's sure, and cows, sheep...mostly only livestock for food...nothing magical or beautiful. There, only to watch in wonder."

"What kind of magical animals are you talking about?"

"...How about a dog...the size of one or two of the buildings in Shiganshina."

"That's made up!" Eren cried out, his eyes wide though, as if trying to envision a dog of such size.

"Did one really exist?" Mikasa questioned curiously, though still carrying her own doubts.

"...yes." Kagome smiled, "though he had an amazing talent, and could walk the earth, looking as a normal human being would. His strength was greater, and he was faster, multiple times over was he intellectually...and he aged much slower. The name of this dog was Sesshoumaru, and he was a Demon Lord."

"Whoa~"

Kagome smiled before laughing, "and he flew on a magical cloud!"

Eren frowned, "now I know you're making things up!" He stood with a glare.

Kagome raised her head, "I tell no lies, what you choose to believe is up to you, but all of my words are those of truth. Such a fantastic creature does exist...or, he did. I'm not sure if he's still out there, but if he is, then maybe...just maybe...you three will be given the opportunity to meet him too. Just as I was."

"Kagome~! Eren, Mikasa~!"

Kagome looked up and noted the setting sun. "With that, I believe we should be heading home, you two go on ahead, tell your mother that I'm walking Armin back to his grandfather."

Eren and Mikasa nodded before running back towards the house not too far off in the distance. Kagome stood with Armin and watched them until she could see they were closer to Kalura.

"Shall we?"

Armin nodded with a smile. The boy was exceptionally bright, and well brought up morally. He had an outstanding view of the political world, the government, the military, and the more sophisticated side of life. As well, he had the bright mind of a scholar, quick wit and a charming personality to boot. She was happy that her brother and sister had such a good friend.

"Is the demon lord truly real? Are there really creatures like that, magical...and beautiful?"

Kagome smiled, "well, how about I tell you a secret Armin. But you can't tell anyone...not even Eren or Mikasa."

Armin nodded his head, excited to be learning something that no one else knew.

Kagome kneeled down and whispered into his ear, "I'm half Dog Demon."

The ten year olds eyes widened before he pouted, "You're teasing me!"

Kagome smiled, "...are you so sure?"

Armin nodded, "of course. I've read books about demons, and there's no way you could be even half of a demon. They are supposed to be hideous creatures, evil and with dark intentions. You are wonderful, Kagome. Beautiful, and smart! No...you're no demon. But you had me going for a second." Armin laughed. Smiling when he saw his grandfather making his way to their house, he grinned, "thanks for walking me home, Demoness Kagome!"

Kagome laughed, putting a finger to her lips, "remember Armin..."

"Right...it's a secret."

Kagome watched the boy leave to his grandfather before heading back to her own home.
