There were hardly any needs for Inspectors and Enforcers to attend calls anymore, so he found it weird when his communicator woke him up.
He put on his coat and walked out the door of his apartment, a flash of a distant memory came in his head of her racing off with her enforcers, and him staying behind.
He clinched his teeth and slammed his door shut.
He wished that she could see him off. He longed for her to see him as an Inspector like she had been.
But now wasn't the time to succumb to his feelings of grief.
He had a job to do.
He made the decision that he would handle this call himself. If it was a dire situation, he would have drones to back him up anyway.
The System hadn't failed him yet.
There was a blockade of komissa keeping citizens out of the area when he arrived to the location. He had no clue what to expect.
"Identification please."
"Inspector Kogami Shu, here to assess the situation." He cooly stated, holding out his ID.
One of the drones moved aside and lead him to two figures laying on the ground.
Shu knelt down next to one who appeared to be a woman. She was still breathing.
"Miss." He shook her shoulder. "Miss, can you hear me?"
Her eyes opened slowly. "Kogami?"
Shu looked at her hard. Had he met this woman before?
She slowly sat up and put her hand to her head. "Oww…"
"Try to take it slow. I'm going to check your friend out." He said, moving over to the other figure.
This one was male and he was laying face down on the concrete. The young Inspector rolled him over on his back so he could check him out. He had on a jacket similar to Shu's over a black suit.
"Hey, sir." Shu said, slapping the man's face a little to wake him. "Are you okay? Sir!"
His eyes opened. They took a while to focus on his face.
"Sir, I'm an Inspector with the MWPSB. Everything is going to be okay now."
"What?" The man rubbed his eyes.
"Kogami, are you okay?"
Both men looked to where the voice came from.
The woman had worked her way over to them.
"I'm fine." The man told her. "What about you? Are you okay, Inspector?"
So that's how she knew Shu's name!
He was still going on a few months at the Department, and since he never liked to interact with anyone, he only knew the names of his Enforcers and his partner.
… But why was she addressing this man as Kogami? Shu was the only living person left with his family name.
"Inspector, can you tell me what is going on here?"
The woman turned her head and looked kind of startled.
She looked back and forth between the two men.
"Are you two related?"
The man and Shu looked to each other closely for the first time.
"What in the hell?"
Their faces seemed to look almost exactly alike. Their hair was both wild and unruly, and even their bodies had similar builds. The only difference it seemed was the color of their hair; Shu's being brown, while the stranger's was black.
"Do you have a brother?" The woman whispered. "A cousin maybe?"
"I'm an only child, and my cousins are all girls."
"I'm going to have to take you with me." Shu said, standing and started to type orders for a vehicle to retrieve them on his communicator.
"There's no need for that." The man said, standing up.
"You caused a spike in the area's stress level. You are both under arrest." Shu pulled out his Dominator when he saw the man start to protest.
"There must be some mistake." The woman said.
"I'm sorry, Inspector, but I have to detain you as well. You were involved."
"Look, kid." The man glared down at Shu. "I don't know what you think you're doing, but playing Inspector is over. We should be the ones arresting you for impersonating an officer. That's not even what a Dominator looks like."
The Inspector growled and pointed the gun in his hand at the man in front of him.
"Crime coefficient: 267. Target is a registered Enforcer. Trigger is now unlocked."
The woman Inspector jumped in front of his aim with her own Dominator drawn."
"Crime coefficient: 27. Target is a registered Inspector. Trigger will remain locked."
The two Inspectors eyed each other.
"You have the same crime coefficient as I do. No one else in the CID has one as low as mine. I know that for a fact." Shu glared. "Who in the hell are you two?"
"I am Inspector Tsunemori Akane and this is Enforcer Kogami Shinya." The woman answered.
The young Inspector's eyes widened.
"What gives you the freaking right," Shu growled, "To use their names!"
He pulled the Dominator's trigger and hit the man with the paralyzer.
"Kogami!" The woman yelled and broke his fall with her own body.
Shu glared down at the two.
"You are under arrest for falsifying your identities and psycho passes."
—-
"Welcome back Inspector Ko-" A man stopped in mid-sentence as Shu came off of the elevator with the woman in restraints.
"Akane?" He couldn't believe his eyes.
"Take her to an interrogation room, Enforcer Ginoza." Shu said, shoving the woman in to his chest. "I'll be there momentarily."
"Wait. Shu, what is going on?" Ginoza turned around to the Inspector who was heading to his division office.
"I'll write a report on it later. You can find out then." He glared over his shoulder and left them behind.
Ginoza looked down at the woman in front of him. "I don't know what you did, but I haven't seen him this pissed off in a while."
"Excuse me, but who are you?"
"I'm Ginoza Nobuchika. I'm one of Inspector Kogami's Enforcers."
"Wait. No." She shook her head. "There has to be some mistake. The Ginoza that I know is my partner and he's… Much younger."
A shadow crossed the Enforcer's face.
"It can't be possible, can it?"
"What?"
"Miss… What year is it?"
"2112."
He shook his head. "There couldn't be that possibility. It's just unthinkable."
"What are you talking about?"
"Have you heard of the Hamadian theory of time travel?" Ginoza asked.
"No…"
"I think you may have inadvertently been involved in an experiment in your time. The year is really 2133."
"What? No, that is insane." She shook her head. "Time travel is impossible."
"Twenty years ago, 100 people disappeared at random. When the CID investigated the matter, we discovered that a man named Hamada Kurashi was responsible for it. He claimed it was for a time traveling experiment. There must have been a lapse in your time, and you probably got counted among the 100. It almost doesn't make sense, because if you had disappeared with everyone else, then Shu would-"
"Ginoza, I told you to take her to interrogation." Shu had emerged and saw them talking.
"Shu, wait-"
"Shut up." He glared and pulled Akane by her arm. "I thought I could trust you to get the job done. Make yourself useful and check on the man in Karanomori's lab."
"Wait." Ginoza looked at Akane in shock. "Who came through with you?"
"Enforcer Kogami." She answered, trying to break away from Shu's grip. "Please make sure he's okay!"
"I said to shut up." Shu jerked her arm and dragged her all the way to an interrogation room.
Later, in Karanomori's lab, Kogami laid in a hospital bed.
It was déjà vu for him. Akane had him in this position when they met not that long ago.
"You're finally awake." A voice said, causing him to look in the direction it came from.
"Karanomori?"
"You're lucky it wasn't the spinal cord this time." The blonde woman said, smirking down at him.
"What in the hell is going on?" Kogami tried to sit up, but his restraints prevented him.
"You might as well take it easy. Shu-kun ordered you to be restrained until he gets the chance to question you."
The Enforcer laid his head back on the pillow.
"Ginoza says that he thinks you and Akane may be a couple of time travelers." Karanomori said, sitting in a chair next to his bed. "Tell me. What is it that you remember last?"
"We were digging up some information for a case we just got put on. People missing at random and no explanation why." He said, looking up at the ceiling. "All we had to go on was the name Hamada."
"I thought as much." She nodded.
"So, you know about the case then?"
"Yes, but it played out much differently in our past. You and Akane caught the guy and he told us about his time traveling theory before he was sentenced to death by Sibyl."
"Executed? So there's no chance in asking him if there is a way back to our time?" Kogami sighed. "Well, damn."
"We're waiting to see what our Chief wants to do. Priority is obviously to get you two back to your time." Karanomori said. "No one wants to risk one of the top Inspectors we have to cease to exist."
Kogami looked at her curiously.
"You've realized it, right? Just exactly who Shu-kun is?"
"His family name is Kogami, isn't it? Is he a cousin or something?"
"Not even close." A male voice came from the doorway.
Kogami looked up and saw a middle-aged man that looked somewhat familiar.
"It's been a while since I've seen you in our time. Almost 18 years."
"Gino?"
The man smirked and nodded. "I'm glad to see that even in my old age, you recognize me."
"Come on." Kogami chuckled. "Give me some credit."
"I'll leave you two to talk, then." Karanomori gave up her seat to Ginoza and left the room.
"Isn't there anything you can do about them restraining me like this?"
His friend shook his head. "I guess you don't know, huh… I'm not an Inspector anymore."
Kogami's eyes widened.
"Shu is head over Division One, now."
"So what is the kid's story?" Kogami asked.
"I raised him in the Bureau for the last 16 years, so he's very proficient with his detective work."
Kogami smirked. "So, you got lucky and got a kid from the deal, huh? Probably with one of my cousins, which explains the same family name as me."
Ginoza's eyebrow twitched.
"So which one was it? Asuka? Naru? Oh, I know! It was Haruka, wasn't it?"
"Are you really that much of an idiot? They were all married at the time Shu was conceived."
"Oh? Huh…"
"I thought you were smarter than this." The older Enforcer shook his head. "Think about it, Kogami. This is 20 years in to the future. A lot can happen in that amount of time."
"What are you getting at Gino?"
"Kogami Shu is your son."
Kogami stared in disbelief at his best friend's words.
"But how? I'm an Enforcer, and there's no way that I could have-"
"Well, the fact is that it happened." Ginoza said. "And he is the best at his job."
"Who is his mother?"
"I've told you too much already." Gino shook his head. "The fact is, he is trying to prove that you two aren't travelers. He thinks you and Akane forged psycho passes and got cosmetic surgery."
"But that's insane! You've checked our DNA, right?"
"Yes, but he still hasn't read the report." He sighed. "He's interrogating Akane right now, and he's probably going to come in here later. Unless he sends Inspector Tohru in his place. Knowing him, he will avoid you for as long as possible."
"Why in the hell would you assume that?"
Ginoza and Kogami turned their attention to the doorway where the voice came from. Shu was glaring at the two Enforcers.
"I'm interrogating him now, Ginoza. Go."
Ginoza stood up to leave, but the young Inspector stopped him before he went out the door.
"You have no right to speak about my personal life to anyone."
Ginoza nodded his head and left the room, letting the door shut behind him, leaving the other two men alone.
Shinya and Shu narrowed their eyes at each other, waiting for the other to speak.
The Enforcer's face relaxed after a few moments and he sighed. "I guess Gino was right. Now that I look at you closer, I see it."
"Don't talk to me as if you know me." Shu glared, causing a smirk from Shinya.
"What?"
"Looking at you, I can already tell a lot."
Shu opened his mouth to say something, but the Enforcer cut him off.
"You were a top-scoring kid in school, but a loner. Probably came right back here after classes and read through old case files and got in plenty of trouble for following open investigations, so it wasn't a surprise to anyone when your top recommendation was to work at the MWPSB. You learned martial arts as a stress relief, and you're proficient in many athletic activities, except…" He paused for a moment and raised his eyebrows. "You can't swim."
"Th-that's none of your business!" Shu shouted. "And quit profiling me! I'm the one interrogating you!"
"Okay, you try me." Shinya said, almost daring him to refuse. "If you're as good as Ginoza said you are, I should be easy."
Shu folded his arms and looked at the Enforcer carefully.
"You're a chain smoker. You look to be a skilled fighter. Silat." He nodded. "You don't get a sufficient amount of sleep often, and yet you have an intellect and raw instinct that is envied by those around you. You're hard-headed, and refuse to play by the set rules. You tend to keep people at an arm's length."
Shu clenched his teeth. "And you… betray people that do end up getting close to you without even thinking of fixing it. As if it was their fault for getting close in the first place."
The Enforcer stared at him, looking emotionless as he watched the young Inspector become angry.
Shu took a deep breath and regained his composure. "And lastly, despite all of this, you are quite a charismatic person. However, you're just a loser when it comes down to it."
"Heh." Shinya smirked. "And you use snide remarks to hide your real feelings."
"I guess that's something I inherited from my father." Shu snapped. "But what would you know?"
"I have to say, Inspector… Not bad." Enforcer Kogami nodded in approval. "I almost regret leaving out the fact that all I see when you stand there like that is a spoiled little boy who resents his father for leaving him, so he dove right in to all he knew, hoping to gain approval one day from the man he resents the most."
Anger flashed in Shu's blue eyes at the man's words. He pulled back his fist and started to punch the Enforcer, but restrained himself.
Shinya looked up at him, no emotion showing.
"Why would you say those things just so I would hit you?"
The two stared at each other for a moment.
"I refuse to accept the fact that you actually feel guilty for something you haven't even done yet." Shu growled.
"I never said that."
"That's the kind of person you are." The young Inspector clenched his fists. "Ginoza always told me that you would use your words to hurt people so that it would punish you in the end."
The two men glared at each other in silence for a few moments.
"So… You do believe that I'm from the past, now?"
"Speaking with Inspector Tsunemori proved it to me." Shu folded his arms.
"So what have you decided to do with us?"
"As much as I hate it, we have to work together to get you back to your time."
"How do you intend for us to do that?"
"We'll have our analysts look over Hamada's research, and we'll question those involved with the experiment." Shu answered. "In return, you and Inspector Tsunemori will be assisting Division One in all of our cases until we find a way to get you back. You're still property of the MWPSB, Enforcer."
"Has Akane agreed to this?"
"I wouldn't force her to do something she wouldn't want to do."
"But you can make me?"
Shu smirked. "I am Shepherd One, after all."
