A/N: Hey guys,
This is my first fanfic and I want to thank everyone in advance for giving this story a shot. Two of my favorite pairings are Percy/Artemis and Percy/Zoe and I'm not sure which one this story will be yet. I really dislike all the Chaos stories and the Pertemis stories where Percy is broken either because Annabeth died or betrayed him. In order to combat this I decided to start the story at the end of The Titans Curse. The story will start there but it will progress quickly through the other books and that's where my story really becomes mine. I do not own the PJO or the characters from that series. Any deviations from the plot of the books are mine along with any added characters and thanks again for reading!
The javelin's point slashed towards me like a scythe. I raised riptide, planning to cut off the weapon at the shaft, but my arm felt like lead. My sword suddenly weighed a ton. And I remembered Ares' warning, spoken on the beach in Los Angeles so long ago; "When you need it most, your sword will fail you." Not now! I pleaded, but it was no good. I tried to block, but the javelin caught me in the chest and sent me flying like a rag doll. My head spinning, I looked up and found I was at the feet of Artemis, still enduring the weight of the sky.
"Run, boy," she told me. "You must run!"
Atlas was slowly stalking towards me, taking his time. My sword had skittered over the edge of the cliff, it would return to me, but I would be dead long before then.
"Die, little hero," Atlas said. He raised his javelin to skewer me.
"No!" Zoe yelled, and a volley of siler arrows sprouted from the chink in the armpit of Atlas's armor.
"Argh!" Atlas bellowed. He turned towards is daughter, face contorted with rage.
I felt Riptide return to my pocket, but I couldn't use it to fight Atlas thanks to Ares. I looked down the mountain to see an army of monsters making their way from the Princess Andromeda to Mount Othrys. I froze, I remembered the words of the prophecy. "The Titan's curse must one withstand." I could not beat Atlas, but I was standing next to someone who could stand a chance against him.
"The sky," I told the goddess. "Give it to me."
"No, boy," Artemis said. "That would be more foolish than engaging Atlas in combat." She looked up at me, her face beaded with sweat, the strain evident on her face.
"Annabeth took it." I said, steeling my face against hers. I doubt any male had ever looked at the goddess like that and lived to tell the tale.
"She barely survived. She had the spirit of a true huntress. You will die as soon as you take it."
"I'll die anyway," I countered. "Give me the weight of the sky!" I didn't wait for her reply. I slashed her chains away with riptide. Then I took a step next to her and braced myself on one knee. I lifted my hands above my head, touching the cold, heavy clouds. In that moment, Artemis and I bore the sky together. It was like having the empire state building falling on top of me. Artemis then slipped out from under the sky, leaving me to hold the burden alone. There are no words to describe how it felt, and I have tried many times. I could see Thalia and Luke dueling, but I could not make out who was winning. I saw Annabeth struggling to her feet, still cuffed and gaged. Lady Artemis was fighting Atlas, she was a blur of speed, but Atlas had near unlimited strength. 'Get ready,' I heard a voice in my head say. I was pretty sure I was starting to lose consciousness as my vision darkened. I fought to stay awake, and I understood what the voice meant now, it was Artemis and I could see her plan fold out. I could see Atlas feint with the tip of his javelin and Artemis dodge it. I saw the trick, Atlas then swept his javelin around after the feint. The javelin caught Artemis in the legs, knocking her down. Atlas set up for the kill.
"No!" Zoe screamed. She leapt between her father and Artemis, shooting the titan in the forehead, arrow protruding like the horn of a unicorn.
Atlas bellowed in rage, bringing down his javelin on Zoe. At the last moment, a mess of golden hair ran into Zoe, knocking her out of the way, taking the tip of the javelin in the chest. I heard Artemis shout. Faster than I could process, she grabbed the titan by the straps of his chest plate. She used the momentum of Atlas's thrust to role onto her back, placing her legs on his chest, and pushing with all her might, to launch the titan towards me. I saw what would happen. I loosened my grip on the sky, and when Atlas slammed into me, I didn't try to hold my ground. I rolled out from underneath the sky with the impact. The weight of the sky dropped onto Atlas's back once again. Atlas was trapped underneath the crushing weight of his punishment.
"Noo! Not again!" Atlas boomed, shaking the mountain to it's very core.
Thalia had Luke backed to the edge of the cliff, but they still fought on. Thalia had tears streaking down the side of her face. Covered in blood, Luke pressed Thalia still. Thalia lifted her shield to block the attack, reluctant to push Luke closer to the cliff's edge. They were at a stalemate, Luke glanced over at were Artemis and Zoe hunched over a broken figure, his face visually showing his soul breaking. It than quickly hardened as he lunged at Thalia, she slammed him with her shield, knocking him off balance, sending him over the edge of the cliff. Thalia made to grab for Luke, extending her hand to grab his. She would have caught him too, but at the motion of her reach, Luke recoiled his own hand, preventing Thalia from saving him. He tumbled over the edge, falling to his death. Thalia stood there stunned, unable to believe what just happened. I managed to make my way over to her, putting my hand on her shoulder.
"Come on," I said. "Let's go help Annabeth out of her bindings."
"Yeah okay," She said, hollowness in her voice. We looked to where Annabeth had been hand cuffed, she wasn't there. I sickening realization came to me. I turned towards where Artemis and Zoe were kneeling, my heart stopped. The sounds around me went deaf, my vision tunneled. I ran towards them and the limp figure of Annabeth.
I was tackled to the ground, mid-stride, by a hell hound. The army from the Princess Andromeda had finally arrived. The hell hound was about to bite my neck, its jaws clamping down when a spear head protruded from it mouth. Thalia had come to my aid. She helped me up and together we turned to face the horde of monsters. Thalia produced Ageis, effectively halting the first wave of monsters, but the hesitation did not last long. They charged, and we held our own. Weakness, from the weight of the sky and the fight before, left me, Riptide felt like it should have, just perfectly balanced in my hands. Empousai fell before my blade, Dracanae fell before Thalia. Soon silver arrows appeared in the bodies of the monsters, Zoe had joined the fray.
"My lady cannot join the fight yet, she is tending to Annabeth." Zoe said.
I grunted in reply, rage filling my mind. Just when we got Annabeth back, she was taken away from us. However, the rage clouded my judgement and made me sloppy. In my renewed onslaught, a cyclops was able to break my gaurd, disarming me and leaving me at the mercy of the monster, something that I would not receive. A Sopwith Camel plane came to my rescue. The machine guns roared to life, strafing the lines of monsters, turning them into golden dust.
"Get away frommy daughter!" I heard Doctor Chase call out. He made another pass, killing more of the monsters. "Run!" he called down to us. We heeded is advice and ran back to the top of the mountain, were Annabeth laid.
With the third pass of the antique biplane, the horde of monsters started to retreat. They ran back to the Princess Andromeda, with Dr. Chase on their tail, completing his fourth strafing run.
We reached Artemis as soon as a silvery chariot, pulled by six of the most beautiful dear I have ever seen, appeared and landed.
"Get in." Artemis said. She carried Annabeth, wrapped in a blanket, onto the chariot. We all climbed aboard after her and we took flight. Dr. Chase seeing us take off safely, pulled out of his last run and filed in behind us.
We landed at Crissy Air Field after the darkness settled in. Artemis laid Annebeth down on the concrete of the run way. As soon as Dr. Chase stepped out of the biplane, he saw his daughter laying there, covered by a thin blanket soaked in blood. He ran over, crying, shouting, screaming. The mess of emotions evident on his face, sorrow from his daughters condition, regret at letting her run away, anger at the monsters who injured her.
"Father," Annabeth said faintly. "You were amazing."
"I'm so sorry, honey." Dr. Chase said as he reached to touch her cheek.
"You have nothing to be sorry about. You knew the kind of life I lived, I chose this fate."
Tears were streaming down his face. "I could have been there for you more, I could have gotten there earlier. I could have prevented this." Dr. Chase choked out.
"You saved my friends, that is more than enough. I love you dad."
"I love you too, Annabeth." Dr. Chased said with a weak voice, hand still on her daughters face in a comforting manner. The light leaving Annabeth's eyes, her father closed them. The prophecy complete. She had died by a parent's hand. Just not in the manner everyone thought.
A/N: First chapter done! Let me know what you guys think! All criticism is welcomed as long as it's constructive and serves a purpose! I know that in the beginning I said I didn't like Hurt!Percy with Annabeth dyeing, but I figured that if Annabeth died at an earlier stage of the books, without their relationship evolving beyond a friendship, it wouldn't make Percy as broken. The next few chapters will be about the next two books without Annabeth but it will be kind of rushed. It will probably be the start of the quests, some important events, and the endings. Thanks for reading and I'll try to post the next chapter soon!
