AN: I do not own R&I

"Jane. I- I can't do this anymore." Maura said.

"What are you talking about? If this is about last night, I'm sorry about Tommy. When he was born, he didn't get any brains. Honestly, I'm not even sure how we're related." Jane joked trying to lighten the suddenly dark mood.

"This isn't about Tommy."

"Then what is it about?" Jane asked all joking aside.

"I can't be with you anymore."

"Oh." Jane said her voice oddly detached. "Let me just go get my things." Jane robotically began packing her duffle bag. During this, Jane was completely silent and ignored Maura's presence in the room.

"Jane I still want us to be friends." Maura pleaded. "We can be friends right? I can't lose that." Maura said placing a hand on Jane's arm.

"We can't be friends ever. You've already lost me." Jane said coldly wrenching her arm out of Maura's grasp. She picked up her duffle and walked towards the front door.

"Jane wait. Jane please. Stop just stop!" Maura cried desperately at Jane's retreating form.

"No!" Jane whirled around, fury burning in her eyes. "I don't know why you're doing this. But you're making a mistake. I hope you break out into hives for breaking my heart. I hope you get them every time you think of me."

"Jane!" She exclaimed tears spilling down her pale cheeks. "Wait." She whispered brokenly as Jane's car squealed out of her driveway. Nothing had gone as Maura had planned. She thought they could go back to being best friends and nothing more. But she was wrong. Dr. Maura Isles was wrong. And she knew Jane was telling the truth. She had possibly made the biggest mistake in her life. She had let go of the woman she loved most in the world. But it was only because she was scared. She had never cared about someone the way she did Jane. She only wanted to reclaim their friendship before things became complicated. Her heart felt like it had been split in so many different directions. And she wasn't sure anymore where her feelings with Jane lie. Was she in love with her? So much had happened between them.

"Fuck." Jane cursed under her breath. The labs for their most recent homicide was in. Frost and Korsak had gone to look at a possible lead. Jane had successfully avoided the morgue and consequently the M.E. for the past two and a half weeks.

"Dr. Isles I'm here for the labs." Jane said calmly, trying to ignore the dark bags under Maura's eyes.

"Jane. It's wonderful to see you." Maura said smiling sadly at Jane.

"Detective Rizzoli." Jane corrected her.

"Excuse me?"

"Only my family or friends are allowed to call me Jane. Seeing as you are neither, my name to you is Detective Rizzoli."

"I see. Well Detective Rizzoli your victim was clean. Tox screen came back negative for drugs. The cause of death was asphyxiation."

"Is that all Doctor Isles?"

"I'm still waiting on some tests to come back from the lab. There was some type of substance under the victim's fingernails." Maura paused. "Jane can we talk, please?"

"What is there to talk about Maur? It's over between us. You made that crystal clear. And no we can't 'just be friends' because that hurts too much. I love you Maura. And do you know what you did to my heart? You chewed it up and spit it out. Now I'm left scrambling to put it back together. Just leave me alone Dr. Isles." Jane said leaving the morgue. Maura simply stared after her completely crestfallen. How was she ever going to apologize if Jane wouldn't even speak to her. She felt herself beginning to break out into hives. Every time she felt extremely guilty she broke out. It seemed that Jane's words had affected her in a way she hadn't anticipated. She really was getting hives for breaking Jane's heart.
