Elsanna's Year

Summer Love

Prologue

"Elsa, you go to college tomorrow! Are you excited? I'm excited! I can't believe you're going to college!" Anna's eyes were wide with glee. "And, I'll be a sophomore and you'll be a freshman and-HA!" Anna pointed an index finger at her sister. "I'll be a grade higher than you in a backwards sort of way. You know, what with sophomore coming after freshman and all. Of course, there is the fact that you're in college and I'm in high school. So, maybe that doesn't really apply? What do you think?"

Elsa observed Anna. Her freckled face was nearly purple from the lack of oxygen she had managed to bring to her lungs while speaking. Her lips curved upward and she extended an arm to her sister's shoulder. "It can be whatever you want it to be."

Anna smiled and then threw herself into Elsa's chest, her arms tightening around Elsa. "Oh, I'm going to miss you so much!"

Elsa, still smiling, slid her arms around her younger sister. "I'm going to miss you, too," she whispered.

"You'll wait for me tomorrow, won't you?"

Anna's voice was soft and clear. Elsa's eyes began to well with tears. This could be the last time she could see her sister for a long time. Elsa thought about for a moment. It will be the last time I see her for a long time.

"Yeah, I'll wait," Elsa replied softly.

Anna's arms tightened again and then she let herself loose from her older sister. She noticed the tears in Elsa's eyes and Anna lifted her hands to her sister's face. She placed them on Elsa's cheeks and ran her thumbs across Elsa's eyes. She then leaned forward and pressed her soft, warm lips against Elsa's forehead. "I love you," she whispered.

Elsa's eyes found their way to her sister's beautiful green ones. She took a moment and stared into them deeply. Every feeling she ever had for her sister wanted to burst forth. In that moment she wanted so badly to come clean to Anna. She wanted to let her know how she truly felt. She wanted to embrace her sister tightly, press her lips against Anna's, and then confess her forbidden love to her sister.

Life wasn't that easy, though. A sister loving a sister was natural, beautiful, accepted. But, a sister loving a sister wasn't natural. It wasn't deemed beautiful in the eyes of society. It wasn't accepted. But, to Elsa, Anna was the definition of beautiful. Even at the age of sixteen, Anna was the most beautiful girl - young woman, Elsa thought - that she had ever seen. Why couldn't society be lenient? Why was it so wrong for two siblings to love each other on an intimate level?

Why?

Elsa smiled. "I love you, too, Anna."

Anna pulled away from Elsa and Elsa felt her heart break in just the slightest. She needed to keep her composure, though. She couldn't let Anna know about how she truly felt. It was bad enough that she saw college as only a way of getting past her sister. She didn't want to lose her forever, as well.

"So, uh, where are you going?" Elsa asked.

"I'm just going to a friend's house for the night. I'll be sure and come back tomorrow morning that way me, mom, and dad can drive you to campus." She flashed a quick, wide smile at her sister.

Elsa winced at her sister's words. Though, if Anna noticed it she did a well job at masking it. "Oh," Elsa replied nonchalantly. "I hope you have a wonderful time at your friend's house, then."

Anna stared into Elsa's eyes. Her lips slowly widened to form another beautiful smile. I love you, Anna. I truly, truly love you. The words never escaped her thoughts, though.

Anna hugged Elsa one last time and when the sound of a car horn outside went off, Anna jumped back and darted out of Elsa's room. "I love you, Elsa," she shouted.

Elsa watched her sister run down the hallway and down the stairs. She heard her mother say something about slowing down, but then the sound of the front door opening and closing drowned out her words. Elsa went to her bedroom. She watched as Anna frantically jumped into her friend's car. Her eyes welled with more tears and her jaw trembled. She opened her hand and pressed her palm against the glass. "I love you," she muttered. The car took off and Elsa broke down.

Tears streamed down her cheeks and the ugly sound of whimpering and gasping for air left her mouth. She quickly went to her door - her vision blurred from the tears, and closed it and locked it, not wanting her parents to hear her cry. She went to her bed and threw herself down on it. She curled up in the fetal position and cried into her pillow.

"I love you, Anna," she stammered. Her teeth clattered as her jaw continued to tremble. "I love you, so much," she whimpered. "And, I'm s-sorry..."

Later that evening, Elsa went downstairs with a couple suitcases she thought she would need for her stay on campus. In one suitcase she had her clothes - socks, pants, shirts, bras - along with other personal items - toothbrush, hair brush, tampons. In the other suitcase she had more personal belongings - Playstation 3, selected favorite games, a pillow, a blanket, her laptop. She sat everything down and stepped into the kitchen.

Her parents greeted her. "Hi, honey," said her mother.

"Are you ready for your big day tomorrow?" asked her father.

Elsa smiled and nodded. "Actually, I was thinking of going tonight. You know, so I can get all settled in and get to know my roomie."

Her parents knitted their eyebrows. Her father sat forward putting his newspaper on the table. "I thought we were all going tomorrow?"

Elsa did her best to push all thoughts of Anna out of her mind. "Anna and I talked earlier and I told her I thought about leaving tonight. She said she really wanted to spend the night with her friend and that it was okay if you guys took me tonight."

"That's weird," said her mother. "Anna was more than ecstatic about going with us just yesterday."

Elsa shrugged and smiled. "What can I say? She was really looking forward to going out with her friends tonight... They were probably going to have a reading party," Elsa jested. Her parents chuckled at the thought knowing Anna all too well.

Elsa recounted the times Anna would sneak into her room just to steal a book. The thought caused a lump to form in Elsa's throat and a sharp, stabbing pain to hit her heart. Had she not been standing in front of her parents, she was sure she would have cried. She pushed her feelings away, though, and kept her composure.

"So," Elsa said, her voice nearly cracking with pain, "should we go?"

"Well, if it's okay with Anna..." Isabelle looked to her husband. She shrugged. "You know what? Maybe we should call Anna just in case. Maybe she has changed her mi-"

"No," Elsa said quickly. Her eyes darted between both parents and then she composed herself once more. "I mean, she said it was all right..."

Victor shrugged his shoulders again. "They're sisters. They tell each other everything. If Anna says it's okay to take Elsa tonight, then I believe our daughter."

His words struck another point of pain in Elsa's heart. She had deliberately lied to her parents just so she wouldn't have to see Anna again and face the pain of having to keep her feelings away from her. And, worse, she had lied to Anna. Anna was expecting to see Elsa tomorrow and now she wouldn't get that chance.

Elsa's eyes stung as tears welled up in them again. Her parents had gone out to the car, each one taking a suitcase, leaving Elsa in the kitchen, alone. A squeak of a cry left her lips as the thought of Anna filled her mind. College wasn't going to be easy and neither was getting over Anna...
