He looked over at the small girl playing with a doll. The doll had a stitched on smile, the only thing that seemed to smile in this world other than the girl playing with it. The girl was everything to him, he didn't know why, it was indescribable, the connection he felt. This small girl, she needed protection and he was going to give it to her. A loud noise brought him to his senses…senses…could he call them that…these feelings he had. He rose from his crouched position by the wall and headed instinctively to the girl.
"What is it Daddy? Will there be angels?"
He was oblivious to the small childs question. All that mattered was that no one hurt her. He heard the aberrations in the pipe corridor adjacent, talking about killing something and stealing from them. He also heard there voices fade away as their footsteps descended to a lower level. He sat down where he had risen from. The girl was oblivious, still playing with her doll. She was now performing surgery on it, the head had been removed and that smile of thread lay away from the dolls body.
All of a sudden the girl rose and approached him.
"Daddy? Do you want to play?"
He let out a bellowing moan, this seemed natural, a response. She smiled gleefully and began climbing on his shoulders.
"C'mon Daddy. Let's play hunt the angels."
This request he could grant. He didn't know why he could but it was automated somehow. He rose gently so not to disturb her and thudded towards the door opposite to the ones he had heard the voices coming from. As he travelled through the pipe corridor the child seemed to look in silent awe at the water and fish surrounding her. A laugh from ahead brought her out of this childlike innocence.
"Quick, there might be angels!"
As he opened the door out of the pipe corridor the monsters scattered from their looting of a corpse. He glanced around to make sure they had all gone before lowering her down onto her feet. The small girl ran gleefully to the corpse and with an impressive thrust for one so small penetrated its torso with a needle. The Big Daddy made an appreciative nod and continued his endless watch.
