Chapter 56: The Test to Achieve Mega Power!

Last time on "Pokémon Kalos Journey", the group had arrived to Geosenge Town with Korrina and Hikaru by their sides. As they arrive, they decide to find the Lucarionite for Korrina to have so Lucario can Mega Evolve for the first time.

But as they search around the shops in the town, they discover that there are no stones that are related to Mega Evolution to begin with. Just as they were running out of options, they decide to find it around the caves that are a bit away from the town.

Before they do so, they meet a photographer named McGinty, who takes a group photo of them, before explaining about the caves and on what might happen if the group were to travel there.

But despite the warning, the Shalour Gym Leader isn't bothered at all as she takes the lead with the others following. As they travel around the mines and the rocky places, they discover a hidden entrance that was hidden by a giant boulder!

With the path now cleared out of the way, the group heads to where there was a cave that could have the Lucarionite hidden inside.

As the group and Korrina were making their way across the cliff valley, Lucario blinked and stopped as he felt the power of the Mega Stone very close! At seeing him stop, the group watched in concern.

"Feel something?" Ash asked, as the Aura Pokémon looked around, with Clemont and Serena being unsure of what Lucario was sensing right now.

"I wonder what Lucario is sensing..." Clemont questioned, with Serena coming up with a guess.

"Danger, maybe?" Serena questioned as the young Aura Guardian shook his head, correcting the Vaniville girl on what it was.

"No... He senses it. The Lucarionite and its power..." Hikaru corrected, causing the others to turn to him in surprise.

"Then that must mean we're close, right? We're close to solving the case and finding the Mega Stone that we searched the whole town for." Yuki stated, earning a nod from the Sinnoh Champion.

As the group talked, Lucario began to walk ahead with Korrina watching her partner questioningly. As the Aura Pokémon led everyone to where this feeling was coming from, he stopped himself to find...

"Is that... a cave?" Yuki questioned as they were soon in front of it.

"We found it!" Bonnie exclaimed excitedly.

"Lucario, you were amazing! How did you know? Unless... it's just like what he said? You can sense the Lucarionite in here?" Korrina asked, before she recalled of what Hikaru had said earlier.

"I see... So it's gotta be somewhere inside here in this cave! Like grandfather said!" Korrina exclaimed, catching the group except by Hikaru by surprise.

"He told me that Lucario and I would find the Lucarionite together! That's it, right?" Korrina asked, earning a nod from the Aura Pokémon.

"Amazing..." Ash breathed out with Pikachu crying out in agreement.

"Maybe, but we won't know for sure unless we go in and find out." Clemont pointed out, allowing the others to understand on what they need to do.

"All right, then let's go!" Ash called out, with Korrina pumping her fist in the air with a "Yeah!".

But just as the group were starting to go in, they found a problem which Serena first pointed out with a frown.

"But... it's pitch-black in there!" Serena pointed out until Clemont had a solution for the group.

"In that case, I say Clemontic Gear, on!" Clemont declared as his backpack activated to take out a Heliolisk collar light! With it, it shone a bit of light into the cave, making it easier for everyone to see.

"Way to go, Clemont!" Ash exclaimed as he was about to take the first step into the cave. But before he could, there were several wailing sounds coming from the cave! That caught everyone by surprise.

Serena, of course, freaked out as she held onto Bonnie with fear.

"Uh oh...! What's that sound!?" Serena exclaimed as the others got ready for what might come.

"What's in there?" Ash asked, as Yuki narrowed his eyes. Hikaru on the other hand, blinked before he seemed to recognize the wailing sounds that were coming from the cave.

"Oh no... I think I know who might be ahead of us and on why the entrance to this path was blocked in the first place..." Hikaru started, causing Yuki to glance at the young Aura Guardian.

"What? Who is it?" Yuki asked, but before the Sinnoh Champion could speak, three familiar enemies and a Wobbuffet were sent flying and out of the cave!

"Why does this happen to me!?"

"Or me!?"

Everyone watched in shock and surprise to see Team Rocket being sent flying out of the cave as they were sent flying into the blue sky as everyone watched them go!

"WE'RE BLASTING OFF AGAIN!" The evil trio screamed along with Wobbuffet before they were soon out of sight. The moment they were gone, the group watched in disbelief and shock of what they had witnessed just now.

"That was... Team Rocket just now, wasn't it?" Yuki questioned with a frown.

"They must've snuck in ahead of us...?" Ash commented with a frown as Pikachu watched to see where they had disappeared off to.

"They're so sneaky!" Bonnie pouted with Dedenne muttering in agreement. The Shalour Gym Leader then blinked, recalling of what they were supposed to do by reaching this cave as she ran ahead.

"The Lucarionite!" Korrina started before she was gently blocked by Lucario, which caused her to question her partner Pokémon.

"Lucario...?" Korrina asked as he gave her a small shaking head.

"I think there's something back there." Ash commented, understanding a little of what the Aura Pokémon was trying to say or do. But despite the troubles there might be, the Gym Leader refused to back down.

"So what? We can't just run away! We've got to get to the Lucarionite now!" Korrina declared loudly, causing the Aura Pokémon to take a few steps ahead before he took the lead with Korrina following him.

"We're behind you, Korrina..." Yuki stated as he followed after her, followed by Clemont and Hikaru. Ash started to follow before he turned to the girls.

"It could be dangerous. Keep close." Ash advised, earning nods from the two before they quickly followed Ash closely behind.

"Protect us, okay, Pikachu?" Bonnie requested, earning a "Pika" from the Mouse Pokémon. With that being said, everyone began to travel in the cave. As they got deeper into the dark parts...

"There's something growling back there...!" Serena pointed out with a frightened tone with Clemont trying to ease up with the situation.

"I'm sure it's just the wind..." Clemont assured as the group continued moving down. Yuki then turned to the young Aura Guardian, remembering of how he attained the Lucarionite for his Aura Pokémon.

"Hey... Hikaru? You were here once for the Lucarionite, right?" Yuki asked, only for Hikaru to give a sheepish smile.

"It's like I said before... I attained the Lucarionite by fighting off a strong Pokémon. But it wasn't here... It was in the Tower of Mastery, where I had to climb up and reach the top to fight the strong Pokémon.

"What was that strong Pokémon, Hikaru?" Ash asked, only to get a shaking head.

"Sorry, Ash. No spoilers. All I know for sure is that it could possibly be the same Pokémon that I fought..." Hikaru guessed, causing the Kanto Trainer to pout a little for the details being hidden.

That pout soon went away as the group continued to make their way down to the cave. As they were making their way, they noticed light up ahead!

"What's that?" Ash asked, as Korrina and Lucario went ahead to see a door to someplace as they gave a small peek before they went through it! The others followed as Korrina and Lucario looked around.

In the room were a long path that led to the stairs and to an altar to where there seemed to be a stone up ahead... or what Korrina and Lucario were wanting to see... the Lucarionite!

"Lucarionite!" Korrina exclaimed as the others came through the door to see the Mega Stone that was on the altar up ahead.

"Check it out..." Ash breathed out in awe as Serena took a good look at it despite of being a bit far.

"Is it really...?" Serena asked, with Hikaru smiling a little, as he confirmed that it was indeed the real deal.

"Yeah... I can sense its power and aura. It's the real deal, alright." Hikaru commented, with Bonnie awed at the sight of it.

"It's beautiful..." Bonnie commented in awe.

"I knew it..." Korrina breathed out as Clemont made a guess of what the Mega Stone was doing for the Aura Pokémon.

"It's like the Lucarionite was calling for Lucario!" Clemont pointed out, as Ash pointed out on the good things that could happen for the Shalour Gym Leader and her partner Pokémon.

"Great! Now Lucario will be able to Mega Evolve!" Ash exclaimed, with Korrina nodding happily in agreement.

"Let's go quick!" Korrina called out as she and Lucario ran to where the altar was. But before they could get far, both Hikaru and Yuki sensed a powerful presence as the Hawlucha Boy was the first to warn her!

"Hey! LOOK OUT!" Yuki shouted out as a Pokémon came out of nowhere and hit Lucario with its foot, with the Aura Pokémon blocking it with his arms! The Aura Pokémon then went after it with a kick, only to miss as the Pokémon flipped back to the altar.

Lucario skidded back as he glared at the unknown Pokémon as Korrina called out to her partner in worry.

"Are you okay, Lucario!?" Korrina called out as Lucario gave an affirmative huff.

"What was all that?" Ash asked as Yuki recognized the Pokémon before he took out a Pokédex.

"That's a Blaziken, isn't it...?" Yuki asked as he scanned the Fire-Fighting Type that had attacked the Aura Pokémon.

"Blaziken, the Blaze Pokémon. Blaziken leaves its opponents charred with its fiery punches." Yuki's Pokédex buzzed as the group were puzzled with what the Blaze Pokémon was doing in the cave.

"What's a Blaziken doing here...?" Clemont asked as Hikaru gave an amused smirk.

"Well, well... To think that Blaziken would come in here and be Korrina's opponent... like in my trial." Hikaru chuckled, causing the group to turn to him in surprise.

"Hold on... So you're saying that the tough Pokémon that you battled against at the Tower of Mastery was that same Blaziken that we're seeing right now?" Yuki asked, earning a nod from the young Aura Guardian.

"The one and only..." Hikaru affirmed, as the Kanto Trainer realized on what this meant when the evil trio flew out.

"Blaziken must be the one who threw Team Rocket out...!" Ash commented as Bonnie frowned, feeling frightened on what might happen to them.

"Help...! I'm scared...!" Bonnie whimpered as she held onto her big brother while Serena frowned at what the Blaze Pokémon might be feeling.

"Is it mad?" Serena asked as Hikaru remained silent, yet he knew that that wasn't it. And his thoughts were proven to be true as Blaziken glanced back at the Lucarionite before facing both Korrina and Lucario.

"I see... So just like with Hikaru's trial, if we want the Lucarionite... First, we're going to have to defeat Blaziken in a Pokémon battle." Korrina spoke out, as she earned a nod from her Aura Pokémon partner.

With that in mind, the Shalour Gym Leader turned to the others before she took off her backpack as she threw it over to Ash, who caught it.

"I think you should all stand back. This is the last hurdle before Lucario can Mega Evolve!" Korrina called out as she and Lucario walked over to Blaziken to prepare to battle against the Blaze Pokémon.

"I hear ya... Good luck, Korrina." Ash spoke out, with Pikachu saying good luck to the two with his cry, too.

"Thanks, but there's no way we're gonna lose now..." Korrina assured bravely as she prepared to defeat the challenge. Hikaru could only frown at the confident tone she had as he folded her arms.

"There's that confidence again... If she gets overconfident now, then it might be fatal to both her and Lucario." Hikaru stated as Yuki frowned in understanding.

"Still... Despite that, she's strong with Lucario by her side. Even if it should get difficult, I'm sure she can do this. We're talking about the Shalour Gym Leader, right?" Yuki reminded, causing Hikaru to remain silent at the question.

As for the Shalour Gym Leader, she faced off against the Blaze Pokémon once she and her Aura Pokémon partner stopped walking to face their opponent.

"Hello, Blaziken... My name is Korrina. I challenge you for the Lucarionite so Lucario can Mega Evolve!" Korrina declared before she took off her shirt to reveal herself in her Gym Leader battle outfit.

"Battle begin! Lucario, Power-Up-Punch!" Korrina shouted out as Lucario did so, as he dashed to make the punch powerful!

"Yeah! There's their first attack!" Ash exclaimed as the group watched.

The Power-Up-Punch's power was activated, but it didn't work as the attack had missed when Blaziken evaded the attack! For the counterattack, the Blaze Pokémon kicked Lucario away hard with Blaze Kick!

"Lucario!?" Korrina gasped as she watched her partner skid back before recovering from the super effective attack.

But it wasn't over as more Blaze Kicks were being sent at the Aura Pokémon!

"Lucario, dodge!" Korrina called out as Lucario did so, evading every strike that the Blaze Pokémon would give him! Unfortunately, it was rather difficult as Blaziken seemed to be a little faster than Lucario himself!

"That doesn't look good..." Yuki pointed out with a frown.

"Blaziken moves so fast! It sure is one tough opponent!" Clemont stated as Hikaru watched carefully. With the Blaze Kicks not stopping, the Shalour Gym Leader took the chance to try and make a counterattack!

"Lucario, use Metal Sound!" Korrina shouted out as Lucario did so! Using his two claws, it made a very terrible sound. A sound so terrible that it caused Blaziken to yell in pain and cover his ears to try and not hear the sound!

But at the moment Metal Sound was done, Lucario began to strike Blaziken again with Power-Up-Punch! The Lumiose Gym Leader and the Sinnoh Champion both frowned at this, as they knew what problem there was.

"Yes! Awesome!"

"Pika!" Ash and Pikachu cried out in awe as Hikaru frowned.

"Lucario attacked again without the command..." Hikaru pointed out, catching Yuki's attention as he turned back to see Lucario's first strike being blocked before the second strike missed when Blaziken ducked to dodge!

Then, with the Aura Pokémon at close range, the Blaze Pokémon shot Flamethrower! It scored a direct hit, blasting Lucario back to one of the cave walls hard!

"Lucario!?" Korrina gasped as she watched her partner Pokémon hit the wall before falling to the ground.

"What a Flamethrower..." Ash commented, with Pikachu crying out in worry.

"I know... Blaziken's a Fire and Fighting Type. It's not a good matchup, and with Blaziken's speed... It's so strong." Clemont commented as Serena frowned in worry, as she understood Clemont's concerns.

"You're right..." Serena breathed out as Korrina tried to skate over to her partner!

"Lucario!" Korrina exclaimed until Blaziken shot Flamethrower to her! The Gym Leader yelled in surprise as she fell back! But as she was falling back, the photo from the group photo fell out of her pocket and was burned to nothing...

Widening her eyes in surprise, Korrina fell back from the blast that was hit near her!

As for the Aura Pokémon, Blaziken grabbed his head and lifted him up before throwing him onto the cave wall! The group watched in worry as Lucario groaned before skidding down to the cave waters, feeling weakened from the blows he had taken!

"Oh no... I can't watch! We have to stop this!" Serena suggested in concern, until the Kanto Trainer stopped her.

"We can't." Ash spoke out, much to the Vaniville girl's surprise.

"Why not...?" Serena asked as Yuki answered for the Kanto Trainer.

"You remember what Korrina said, don't you? This is her battle and her fight to battle in. If we interfere, then we'll only cause trouble and make her fail this trial." Yuki pointed out with a serious look on his face.

The Sinnoh Champion only nodded a little before the group watched to see the Shalour Gym Leader starting to get up.

"You're not gonna let something like this bring you down, right? The battle isn't over until it's over." Hikaru called out as Korrina's face darkened before she made a small smile... a small smile of confidence.

"I guess you get it... You totally understand it..." Korrina grunted before she got up to face Blaziken again as she glanced to the others that were watching.

"That's right! We'll never give up! No matter who we're up against in battle, we'll never turn and run the other way! Right, Lucario?" Korrina called out, as Lucario struggled to get up as he had heard Korrina's voice.

"Please! Get up!" Bonnie pleaded out loud.

"You can do it!" Clemont shouted out.

"Lucario!" Serena called out loud.

"Yeah! Get up! Come on!"

"Pika Pika!" Ash called out with Pikachu encouraging the Aura Pokémon, with Yuki and Hawlucha making the finishing call.

"You're not gonna let the big Blaziken take you down like this...!?"

"Cha! Hawlucha cha!" Yuki yelled, with Hawlucha adding the icing to the encouragement.

That seemed to have brought the Aura Pokémon back to his senses as he slowly got up and glared at Blaziken, who seemed surprised to see the Aura Pokémon getting up despite the heavy hits he had taken during the battle.

"Alright!" Ash exclaimed to see the Aura Pokémon getting back up as the others watched with smiles on their faces, while Hikaru watched with the serious look remaining on his face.

"Lucario, Power-Up-Punch, go!" Korrina shouted out.

With not another second being wasted, the Aura Pokémon let out a battle cry before he faced his opponent with two glowing fists! He ran to the Blaze Pokémon, and struck him multiple times, with some of the punches being blocked!

But with a few more strikes, the Power-Up-Punch attacks landed some serious hits! As Blaziken was stumbling back, the Aura Pokémon let out another battle cry before he unleashed Bone Rush by creating two bones!

Using the two bones, Lucario began to strike at Blaziken hard and fast, causing Blaziken to fall on its back! With the opponent knocked down, Lucario threw its bones, causing it to trap Blaziken!

With the neck being trapped by the bones, more bones from the Bone Rush were created as they were all used to trap Blaziken on the ground to prevent him from moving!

"Awesome! Blaziken can't move so speed won't help it now!" Ash exclaimed as the others watched in awe.

"She's going to win! I just know it!" Yuki exclaimed with a smile on his face. And he was right, as the Shalour Gym Leader was ready to put an end to the battle with one more attack.

"We're almost done! Lucario, let's finish this up!" Korrina called out.

The Aura Pokémon let out a battle cry again before he prepared to make the finishing blow with Power-Up-Punch! But before he could land the attack, a stern voice called out to stop the battle.

"Enough!" The voice shouted out, stopping Lucario from making the hit! Korrina blinked in surprise, as did the others while Hikaru smiled in realization.

Everyone then turned to see someone coming out from behind the altar as he stepped forward to reveal himself.

"You have won... Hi, Korrina." The old man said softly, as Korrina widened her eyes in surprise.

"Grandfather!?" Korrina exclaimed as the group except Hikaru were surprised to hear and see this, too.

"That's your Grandfather!?" The four Trainers and Bonnie all spoke in unison, as the old man chuckled to hear the question.

"Yes. They call me the Mega Evolution Guru. I'm Gurkinn." The Mega Evolution Guru, who the group knew now as Gurkinn introduced himself with a polite and calm smile on his face.

"Mega Evolution Guru?" Ash repeated in awe, with Pikachu making a questioning cry.

"And he's Korrina's grandfather as well?" Serena added in disbelief.

"So, what is he doing here anyway?" Clemont asked, before the group watched to see Gurkinn taking out a Pokéball and pointing it towards the defeated Blaze Pokémon.

"You did battled nobly, Blaziken. You may return." Gurkinn called out as Korrina blinked, before questioning her grandfather about the Blaze Pokémon.

"What's going on? Does all of this mean that Blaziken is your Pokémon, Grandfather?" Korrina asked, earning an affirmative answer from her grandfather.

"That's right." Gurkinn stated, before the Shalour Gym Leader curiously questioned about the test battle.

"But, why all of this?" Korrina asked, allowing the Mega Evolution Guru to explain.

"I knew that you would complete your training and make it here successfully. So I thought I would give you this final trial myself. And you overcame it beautifully as I knew you would. You passed this final test with flying colors!" Gurkinn explained.

He placed a hand on his granddaughter's shoulder, before smiling at both her and Lucario.

"Well done, Korrina, dear. And you as well, Lucario." Gurkinn said proudly, causing the granddaughter and her partner to smile back at the Mega Evolution Guru.

"Grandfather..." Korrina said softly as Lucario gave a small grunt with a smile.

Nodding to her, the Guru got out of the way with a small smile on his face, allowing the Shalour Gym Leader to make her way to take the Lucarionite for her and Lucario to have for themselves.

"Now go forth, and take what you've earned." Gurkinn ordered softly, causing Korrina to smile before she skated over to the altar before going up and taking the Mega Stone into her hands.

As she took it into her hands, she smiled before raising it up to show her achievement to the group and Hikaru.

"We finally got the Lucarionite!" Korrina shouted out as Lucario let out a howl of joy, as he felt the same joy as Korrina was feeling. While the group watched in awe, Hikaru smiled a little for the achievement Korrina has achieved.

But that little smile turned into a frown.

"You may have achieved the Lucarionite, but... that won't mean the Mega Evolution will be a guarantee success... Something tells me that this is only the beginning of your next test..." Hikaru thought seriously.

Later...

With the Lucarionite attained, the group headed out of the cave with Gurkinn by their side as they saw McGinty up ahead.

"Mr. McGinty!" Ash called out, catching the photographer's attention as he turned to see the group returning.

"We came back!" Bonnie cried out as the old photographer looked rather pleased to see them return.

"Well, it's nice to see you. Did you find what you were looking for?" McGinty asked, as the Kanto Trainer answered for the group.

"Yep! We sure did!" Ash declared, causing the old photographer to smile.

"Wonderful!" McGinty chuckled, before Korrina realized on what she needed to say before she spoke.

"Sorry, Mr. McGinty... you took such a nice photo of us, but I'm afraid mine got burnt up..." Korrina apologized sheepishly, causing the photographer to learn what happened before he gave a smile.

"I see... Well, we'll just have to print you out another one." McGinty reassured softly, causing the Shalour Gym Leader to brighten up.

"Really!? Thanks a lot!" Korrina spoke gratefully. Nodding to Korrina, the old photographer then took notice of Gurkinn coming over to where the group was.

"Say... it looks like it went well! Your granddaughter really is something special!" McGinty spoke, causing the Mega Evolution Guru to chuckle at the photographer's kind words.

"She's my granddaughter. Of course she is!" Gurkinn assured proudly, causing the group except Hikaru to be confused. Serena was the first to raise the question as she questioned the photographer.

"Wait... Do you know Korrina's grandfather?" Serena questioned, causing McGinty to give a sheepish chuckle.

"Actually... he asked me to help you out with your quest to locate the Lucarionite." McGinty chuckled, with Gurkinn confirming that it was true.

"That's right..." Gurkinn agreed, causing the group to sweat drop on how easy it would've been if they had asked McGinty in the first place.

"So you knew from the beginning...?"

"Pika Pika?" Ash questioned in disbelief, with Pikachu crying out his surprise and disbelief as well.

"I don't believe it... We went around the whole town to make that search when we could've gone to you first..."

"Hawlucha cha..." Yuki groaned as he scratched the back of his head, while Hawlucha gave a small sigh in disbelief. The photographer gave another sheepish chuckle, before apologizing for the little deception.

"Hehehe... Sorry, kids." McGinty chuckled, before the Lumiose Gym Leader recalled of what the photographer had said earlier.

"Then, what's up with that story about something terrible happening in the cave?" Clemont asked, only to get another sheepish response.

"I made it up..." McGinty responded, causing the four Trainers and Bonnie to groan.

"Made it up...? Seriously...?" Yuki groaned, before Gurkinn raised up a point on how it wasn't completely made up.

"If someone unworthy of the Mega Stone had gone inside the cave, Blaziken would've driven them off. So it wasn't a total lie." Gurkinn assured, before Serena recalled of what had happened to the evil trio.

"Ah... Like Team Rocket." Serena recalled, as the Kanto Trainer gave a sheepish laugh.

With the truth revealed, the Mega Evolution Guru turned to his granddaughter with a serious look.

"Now, Korrina..." Gurkinn started, catching the Gym Leader's attention.

"Yeah?"

"As proof that you overcame your trial, the Lucarionite is yours. I'm giving it to you." Gurkinn declared, earning a smile from the granddaughter.

"Thanks..." Korrina said gratefully as the five smiled at the two for their great achievement.

"Good for you! Lucario, too!"

"Pika, Pika!" Ash praised the Gym Leader, with Pikachu praising the Aura Pokémon as well.

"Wonderful!"

"It sure is!"

"Congratulations!" Serena, Bonnie, and Clemont all congratulated the two as well, with Yuki being the last to say it.

"Great work, you two. You deserve to have the power of Mega Evolution." Yuki spoke out, with Hawlucha folding his arms and nodding in agreement. Hikaru didn't say anything, but gave a small smile as he nodded to the two, accepting their achievement as a good thing.

"You guys are so nice. Thank you...!" Korrina spoke gratefully, while Lucario gave a grunt of thanks, too.

A few minutes later...

Everyone soon gathered to see the first Mega Evolution that Lucario would have with Korrina by his side.

"Okay, Korrina. Are you ready?" Gurkinn asked as Korrina nodded in determination.

"Ready, Grandfather!" Korrina assured before she handed the Lucarionite to Lucario, who held it in his arms. Then, taking a few steps back, Korrina was ready to press onto the Key Stone that was on her Mega Glove.

"Here we go, Lucario!" Korrina called out, with the Aura Pokémon grunting, giving the sign that he was ready. Nodding to him, the Shalour Gym Leader pressed onto the Key Stone.

"Now, Lucario! Mega Evolve!" Korrina exclaimed as the Key Stone and the Lucarionite both began to evolve. The five and Hikaru watched on the sidelines, with the group feeling excited to see Korrina and Lucario having their first Mega Evolution work.

"This is it... Their first Mega Evolution together...!" Yuki pointed out, with the others understanding the excitement that they were all feeling.

"I can't wait...!" Clemont admitted as the Mega Evolution process continued on, as Lucario soon began to evolve, thanks to the power of the Key Stone and the Lucarionite that he held.
