Sometimes Toby wished he hadn't been gifted with such a keen facility for perception. It was clear they meant for the nature of their relationship to remain secret. And aside from him, no one was any the wiser. But while his usual tendency was to actively seek out personal details the people around him tried to keep hidden, this time he wished he could join the likes of Walter, Paige and Sylvester in blissful ignorance.
But really, how had any of them missed the look on Happy's face when Megan first walked into the garage? It was the kind of awestruck attraction that was usually reserved for fairy tales or movies or watching your bride walk up the aisle. Initially he hadn't given it much thought. Megan was pretty; Happy couldn't be blamed for looking. And really at the time he'd been more focused on the fact that Walter was willingly sharing a major piece of his personal life with them. They'd all been shocked.
But then they returned from Bosnia and while Walter's attention was focused on his conversation with Sylvester, Toby had been at his desk watching Happy. Megan was speaking too quietly for him to hear what she was saying but whatever it was it got a smile out of Happy. And had he just seen Megan slip her a piece of paper? But then Happy was at his desk, thanking him for taking care of her and all thoughts of Walter's sister were swept to the far recesses of his mind.
Those thoughts didn't stay at bay for long though. Much to Toby's chagrin, after her bailout Megan became a frequent visitor to the garage. It wasn't her presence in the garage that bothered him. On the contrary he liked her just as much as the rest of the team and enjoyed having her around. It was when she left that the green eyed monster reared its ugly head. Why did no one else question Happy offering to drive Megan back to the hospital every time she visited? And she never came back to the garage after. Quite conveniently she was always just heading home when Megan decided she was ready to leave.
Gradually there were more glances and smiles thrown across the garage between the two. Physically they kept their distance from each other when others were around. But today distance didn't necessarily mean a suspension of intimacy. Could he really be the only one who picked up on their increased cell phone use in each other's presence? It was a bold decision in his opinion given the ease with which anyone adept enough could access their text messages. But then again, why would anyone care to invade their privacy? As far as everyone but he was concerned, there would be nothing of interest to see on either one of their phones.
And then it was Christmas and Paige was insisting they have dinner together to celebrate. He saw the mistletoe and wondered if they'd be so daring. But it was Sylvester that Megan caught under the holiday foliage, though she was careful in where she directed his affection. And the big bag he'd seen Happy bring in earlier was for him not her and held a new hat to replace the one he'd lost the day this all started. As he held her close thanking her for the gift he considered that maybe it was over, ending just as discreetly as it had begun.
But no, while everyone else revelled in Ralph's Christmas gift falling from the ceiling, Toby caught Megan's hand slipping something in Happy's pocket. And he was also probably the only one who noticed that Megan hadn't been wearing a necklace before she went to the washroom. And when they sat next to each other while they all enjoyed pie for dessert, it was as if with one mind that the right hand of one and the left of the other went under the table. Yes, sometimes Toby wished he could withdraw his powers of perception and retire to a fool's mind in which Happy's affections were for him alone.
