Katherine is not dumb. No matter what her father has told her, Katherine is not dumb. So when she sees the women out in the streets, waving banners of their own, Katherine puts on her coat and joins them. Katherine is not dumb, no matter what society expects of her. She comes in after day after a long day of protests and speeches, and writes. She writes about the unfairness of this country. The sexism, the racism, the rotten truth hidden under layers of gold. Katherine is not dumb. She knows if her boss found out that she was out there, carrying her own banner, fighting her own battle, she would be fired without a second glance. She doesn't care. She stands out there, shoulder to shoulder with other women who are not dumb. Shoulder to shoulder with others who did what their father told them not too. Shoulder to shoulder with other writers, dreamers, visionaries. Women who spoke up. Spoke out. Women who, like her, defied the rules of society. They were rich and poor, old and young, but they all wanted the same thing. She stand there, sign raised in the air, stating that she wanted her fair share.
" Katherine!" Katherine turned her head, hitting someone with her sign in the process. She mutters a apology and scans the crowd for the voice. " Hey." Katherine jumps, and turns to see Smalls standing next to her. " Isn't this great? It's like the strike all over again! Only this time its all for us." Smalls scans the crowd, marveling at how so many other women were like them. So many other women who were not dumb. At the moment, Katherine appreciates how smart Smalls really is. She may have never been to school, or not speak so well, but she knew right from wrong. She know the sexism of this country is wrong.
" It's wonderful!" Katherine says over the cries of many women, desperate to be heard. She hears every language, French, Italian, and others she didn't even know. But that doesn't matter, she decided. As long as they fought for the same thing.
Katherine just stood there, banner held high, loving the moment. Until somewhere in the distance, she saw another group, marching towards them. She squinted, barely able to make out the words on the banners. What she sees makes her heart stop. Women against Women Voting.
" Do you think they are here to help?" Smalls asks, clearing having not read the banner.
" No Smalls." They stand there, watching other women, stand against them. Katherine is not dumb. These women are the ones who are. A woman screams, first in Italian, then in English.
" The Bulls! Run!" The women scatter, running over banners and the fallen. Katherine stops to help several others back onto their feet after the bulls knocked them over. Smalls dragged her away.
" Cheese it, Katherine! Run!" Katherine lets herself be pulled away by Smalls. They run and run, until they can no longer hear the shouts. " Well that was fun." Smalls grinned at her. " Same time tomorrow?" Katherine nodds. She knows the other women will be back. After all, they aren't dumb. Smalls sprints away, back to the Bronx, and Katherine walks away, back to her typewriter. And that night, as she settle down to write another article, she knows she isn't dumb. She's a damn genius, and anyone who didn't think so was going get their ass kicked.
