For the Pyramid Challenge on HPFC (prompts: Augustus Rookwood and fairytale)

Of Crayons and Cinderella

"Oh, Augie, what on Earth have you done there?"

Brown eyes looked up sheepishly as Evelyn Rookwood hurried into the bedroom with a damp cloth and a bucket of warm water. Immediately she began scrubbing the crayon marks that had decorated the wall of her and her husband's bedroom.

Augustus Rookwood, the culprit of the art, couldn't help but shy away as he saw his mother at work. "I was only trying to make it look nice," he whispered quietly.

Evelyn stopped what she was doing for a moment to look at her son and smile. "I know, darling," she said. "But you can't draw on the walls. We have talked about this before."

Little Augustus nodded. "I know, Mummy," he said. He watched as his mother continued to scrub at the walls, working for hours until every little mark was completely removed. Quite a few times Augustus heard her mumble something about wishing she had a magic wand that could do it in a second.

"Maybe there is, Mummy," Augustus piped up. He came to sit on his parents' bed. "Just like in Hinder… Cinderella."

Evelyn chuckled to herself. "Maybe there is," she agreed.

Cinderella was the boy's favourite story and always had been. Ever since he could sit up on his own he had been captivated by that one book. Librarians themselves, both of his parents saw the importance of reading to their son every night, and when he became old enough to talk he requested only one story.

"The fairy godmother has a magic wand!" Augustus exclaimed, jumping to his feet.

"Augie, please don't jump on the bed. Your shoes are all muddy."

Augustus sat back down again.

"Can you read me the story, Mummy?" Augustus asked.

"Later, darling. Before bed."

"We were up to the part of Cinderella going to the ball. She'll run away, Mummy."

Evelyn shook her head. "If you know what is going to happen, why do you insist on reading it again?" she asked.

"The fairy godmother is my favourite," Augustus continued. "One day I'll be like her."

"A fairy godmother?"

"Magic, Mummy. I'll have magic like her."

"Well, darling, one day I hope you do. That way you can clean this mess up by yourself." Evelyn chuckled to herself and then stood, arching her back. "Remind me, Augie, what do you draw on?"

"Paper!" Augustus answered knowingly.

Evelyn smiled. "I hope that will always be the case." She held out her hand for Augustus to take. The boy climbed cheerfully off the bed and accepted her outreached hand.

"What are we going to do, Mummy?" he asked as he followed her from the bedroom.

"Anything you want, Augie," came the reply.

There was silence for a moment and then a shout shook the walls of the small, cottage home.

"CINDERELLA!"
