One week later
Anger and a strong resentment burned within Moriel. She wasn't an elf. Not anymore, strong emotions moulded her into something anew. Something vile and repulsive. A being that could never be loved or cherished again. Snowflakes landed on her as she sat in a high branch of one of the great many trees, only the flake melted seconds later from the heat the secreted from her body. Her sharp predatory gaze watched the guard's routine near the gate. Moriel's eyes flickered when the gates doors opened and closed throughout the day and night. She would bind her time. For now.
…
"Naneth, have you thought of any names as of yet?" Ivoriel asked excitedly. Aewenel subconsciously placed her hand on her bulging stomach, it was almost time.
"Malenor and I have not quite decided yet. It will either be Ecthenor or Daerion after his fore fathers, Gwaenor was mine. "She said softly, a small smile played on her lips. It was a welcoming sight. My heart fluttered in excitement as the prospect of having another sibling. I clasped my hands together in delight.
"Perhaps we shall see more little ones." Aewenel said idly, though she had directed it at me in a way that left me puzzled.
"What do you mean, Naneth?" I asked confused, but that quickly cleared when I saw the playfulness.
"Well, it is no longer a secret that you spend the majority of your time in the company of our king. "She said with a hint of mischief. I instantly felt guilty for keeping her in the dark. Especially when Thranduil's and my relationship had been a bit tense.
"Well, I do enjoy his company." I mumbled embarrassed. She covered her mouth to muffle her laughter. She didn't believe me completely. I could tell.
"Galion has had a few things to say about that. Though he does not like to gossip… I would perhaps caution you against Thranduil but I have seen the way he looks at you. I do not believe it is something for me to worry about. Malenor is waiting until he picks up the courage to subject himself to our approval of a union." Aewenel teased mercilessly. I blushed furiously. I could feel the heat in my face, shocked at her openness. Though I was technically an adult, I didn't necessarily need their approval but respectfully. I would recommend it.
"What- How could you possibly…" I stammered. How could she possibly know that? I doubted it very much but then what else could be Thranduil's intentions. Oh I have been naïve but it was a little presumptuous to begin with. No I wouldn't entertain the idea. Not yet. It didn't seem appropriate, I never wished to cause a rift between Thranduil and his son. It didn't help that Naneth only shrugged her shoulders. I wouldn't be getting any more details from her.
…
Ivoriel wondered the halls in boredom. She idly speculated where Hatholon was. A few places crossed her mind. He did not fight in the battle and for that Ivoriel was glad. It was bad enough that Gwaenor had left but she knew he was a capable fighter. Ivoriel first checked the barracks, the library then the stables but Hatholon was nowhere to be found. Ivoriel had overturned an empty bucket and used it as a seat. It smelt strongly of hay and horses here but she never minded. A herd of deer stood out on the small clearing to her right near a stream. Pretty yellow and white flowers littered the grass where a familiar figure sat on a fallen tree. Mushrooms festered across the bark of the small sapling, Ivoriel admired it as she approached her friend.
"Ivoriel!" Hatholon exclaimed, he stood so quickly it spooked the deer somewhat. The charcoal and paper falling from his lap onto the grass. He easily strode towards her and pulled her thin figure into a bruising hug. She laughed breathlessly at his disbelieving relief.
"By the Valar what were you thinking!? Gallivanting off to battle!" he asked in relief at the sight of her. He quickly checked her over for any cuts or serious wounds. He couldn't help himself he hugged her once more to reassure himself that she was actually there. Hatholon had missed her, their friendship had expanded in such a short amount of time.
"Well…" Ivoriel shuffled her feet nervously. She never wanted to repeat why she had gone. Hatholon saw her hesitance.
"You are safe now. That is all that matters." He said kindly, leading her over to where he had sat moments ago to observe the deer. A young lone elk could be seen at the edge of the forest. Its fur shone in the soft afternoon light that escaped the branches of the trees overhead.
Ivoriel noted Hatholon reaching into the pocket of his robes, withdrawing a red apple. The elk unsurely moved back a few paces when the Ellon approached, but upon seeing the food it cautiously stepped closer to him. Hatholon held it out for it to nibble at, all the while slowly extending his other hand to gently stroke the fur on its neck. The elk blanched at first but hesitantly allowed it after a while. The elk's moist nose poked Hatholon's pocket where the scent of a pear emitted from. He smiled at the gentle creature before baring the fruit to it. Ivoriel stepped closer to them, the grass bending under her feet. The elk noticed her presence, but instead of backing away it moved closer to her. Her eyes widened in slight fear at Hatholon.
"It appears he likes you." Hatholon laughed, giving her the pear, which the elk eagerly sought out. She curiously touched its pale antlers. They felt hard and smooth to the touch. Though moments later something in the trees spooked the elk and deer. They leapt over fallen logs away from the presence in the forest. Hatholon glanced around nervously.
"Perhaps we should head back home." He suggested, uneasily glancing up at the trees. Ivoriel nodded in agreement as she too searched the forest, but whatever it had been was gone. She walked with him away from the forest and to the safety of home.
The half-eaten pear lay forgotten in the grass.
…
"I have news." Gwaenor said in a spidery soft voice. He seemed shy all of a sudden as he pushed himself onto one elbow as he lie comfortably across her bed.
"Good news I hope?" Ivoriel asked curiously as she flicked through the book's pages she had been trying to read. She hooked her ankles together in the air, her dress falling to the back of her knees.
"Yes, yes." Gwaenor reassured thoughtfully. Ivoriel peered at him patiently. A smile playing at the edges of her supple lips.
"Well?" his sister pressed, her interest increasing by the second. She had closed her book entirely and pushed it away by now.
"Estennil and I are betrothed, we will make the official announcement tonight." He said, a happy smile broke across his face. Like the sun breaking free of a puff of clouds. Ivoriel's jaw fell open before she recovered and let out a happy squeal, leaping off the bed in a joyful flurry of movement. Words betrayed her at this moment, she dived onto Gwaenor and gave him a crushing hug. Gwaenor laughed, his own delight resurfacing.
"Oh this is wonderful!" exclaimed Ivoriel. She jumped up and down with exhilaration. Her hair bounced and shone in the light. Gwaenor smiled broadly as he remembered Estennil's reaction which was similar to Ivoriel's. He was glad she took this well, he wouldn't know what he would have done otherwise. Though Gwaenor only wagged his eyebrows.
"At least I will not be the only one
She looked at him confused, he almost felt sorry for her. Almost
"Who else?" She asked settling back into the pillows. Gwaenor only winked and raced out the door laughing, Ivoriel upon realising what he had implied, followed chase with the biggest pillow in hand.
