AN: I don't know why. I might do some more little drabbles in this universe, but we'll see. No full-length story since Thranduil is currently demanding my attention and there's you know real life to endure. Still, hope you all like this little 'what-if'.
Kagome subtly cast her eyes around the car lot, trying to pinpoint the odd energy she'd felt. It didn't seem like anything she'd ever encountered and that made her perk up in an excitement she hadn't experienced since the end of the Shikon hunt. Strolling through the cars, she felt her heart stop and sweat break out on her palms when her gaze landed on a vintage yellow Camaro. Wetting her lips, she slowly drifted over to stand in front of it.
There was something…yes, there-at the corner of her awareness-an unfamiliar hum of power. Swallowing, she ignored the roar of blood in her ears and the abrupt knowledge that she was standing on the edge of yet another well. She could walk away this time. Right now. No one had seen her yet, so she could walk out of the dealer's lot and back into her boring life of antiques and museums. She could walk away from everything; leave her abilities and want of something more to rust beside the Camaro. Force herself to be content with acquisitions and appraisals.
Blue eyes narrowed and hands stilled their shaking. She was the Shikon Miko. If she'd wanted safe and boring, she would have handed Kikyo the Shikon shards and sealed the well when she was fifteen.
Breathing deeply, Kagome reached out and gently touched the vehicle's hood. Gasping, she felt her lids fly open in awe as a spark of sheer life met the brush of her powers. A golden aura full of so much power and vitality met her probe, overwhelming enough to bring tears to her eyes. Under her fingers, the car shuddered, snapping the miko out of her shock.
"Oh," she whispered hoarsely, "oh, you're gorgeous!"
The minute hum in the surrounding air increased. It felt decidedly…curious?...Cautious?...Inviting?
"My name's Kagome," she told the car. "Can you communicate?"
Static from the radio broke the hushed atmosphere before it settled on a clip of a song. "I've been waiting, for a girl like you." Scrolling between stations, it played another. "If you believe me, I'll tell you anything."
Blinking, the miko cocked her head to the side and then felt a grin split her face. Her heart was thumping in her ears as adrenaline shook off the dust of her mundane existence. "Fantastic."
"May I help you?" a man's voice called.
Turning slightly, Kagome reluctantly tore her eyes from the Camaro to look at the salesman.
"How much for the classic?"
She swore the car purred in anticipation.
