Chapter 11: You're Just the Same As Me

Epilogue

Jasper's POV

There was red everywhere.

It was my niece's favorite color, ironically and my pixie wife Alice and supposed twin Rosalie loved nothing more than to over indulge in that little half-breed's wants.

Red, laced tablecloths. Silk red curtains, red satin seat-covers, red favors, red roses and various flowers, rose gold silverware, anything Alice could get her hands on, you name it, she decorated this banquet hall with it.

Including a 100,000 dollar crystal chandelier to be hung in the center of the hall and beat down luminous-red lights.

I watched as the 100 people or so gathered here mingled, danced and crowded around the half-breed.

She sure did have a lot of friends and people who appreciated or vied for her company/attention.

Many of the covens that stood with us against the Volturi five years ago were in attendance for her little growing-up ball. Add some of her gullible human friends who assumed their red eyes were just colored contacts in an effort to support the color-theme of the decorations, Bella's relatives, the La Push pack consisting of Jacob, Seth, Leah and whoever else and then myself, my family and many bystanders I had never met but assumed to be people that Nessie knew or were acquainted with.

The party started off without a hitch. Unless you count my damn mate being held by none other than that bronze-haired half-pint.

But I watched on with a real smile on my face. Months and even decades ago, I could have never imagined or even wonder if Alice could have saw me this happy to watch the woman I love and the family I had grew to love be merry. I look on at my family: Carlisle and Esme dancing, Rosalie laughing with Emmett, Nessie surrounded by the wolf pack and her friends... hell, evenAlice was chipper, gladly comparing shoes with one of the Denali girls.

All was well.

"U-Uncle Jasper?"

I turn away from the balcony to face the timid sounding voice.

"Nessie? What's the matter?" I question to my niece that no longer seemed interested in the festivities but rather chose to sneak off like I had briefly.

The little half breed had grown. Chestnut wavy hair. Pink cheeks. No longer a baby. She let out a sigh. And a shrug.

"Oh, i-it's nothing…" Nessie trailed off, chewing her bottom lip, a habit she took from Bella. "I suppose it is something and I suppose it is nothing…"

It had to be something.Even I knew that.

"You feel grateful but unhappy." I say, taking a hearty sip from my glass of whiskey. I'm an empath. She knows that.

Nessie sighs, leaning her weight on one leg before shifting it to the other. Frustration. She finally begins, "My mother and father have been distant from each other. I know that."

Another sip from my whiskey. I even chew one of the ice cubes. "What makes you say that?"

Nessie shakes her head and comes to stand beside me, overlooking the scenery. "It's gone." She sighs, matter-of-factly. "And I kind of understand why."

"What makes you say that?" I nonchalantly ask again, taking another swing from the square glass.

A soft sigh leaves my niece and she leans forward on the balcony.

"I may be technically seven years old… but it's felt almost like a lifetime." She giggles but then immediately straightens and looks me in the eye. With eyes beyond her appearance age and beyond her mental age. "I-I think I should be mad for it—mad that my perfect family is about to be split apart after my party but… I don't blame you."

"Nessie…" I softly say, not having words. The fact that the lil' half breed could figure it out had me wondering who else knew.

Her bottom lip is sucked in her mouth and gnawed at. She stares into space. "I love Jacob. Just as you love Alice. But I think I have to venture out of that… and find the one who's made for me just like mom found you."

Huh.

"So that's what's been botherin' you, huh?"

She looks at me. "What do you mean?"

"Darlin', you seem to forget that I am an empath. I feel emotions and yours sometimes can't help but call out to me." I chuckle and pat her shoulder. "I'm sorry things are probably gonna' go down the way they are but I love her and sometimes you have to put yourself before the thoughts of others."

"I know." She nods, with a small smile.

"Your guests are wondering where the pretty little princess went off to."

Nessie straightens herself up. Fixes her hair up and holds her head high. Just like Rosalie taught her. Then turns to me and wraps warm arms around my shoulders. "Thank you, Uncle Jasper."

I'm a bit shocked but I should have expected it. She felt... thankful. "For?"

"Being there." She smiled softly, wrapping her warm around around me again.

I hug her back. "No problem, little half-breed." It's how it's supposed to be.

Nessie heads back to her party guests while I head over to the bar for a refill, of course sneaking a wink at my sugar, Bella.

Soon everyone settles down into their arranged seating, strategically set up by the pixie that's never outdone, Alice. Vampire coven next to vampire coven, wolf pack and the humans. Then Nessie and Bella's human relatives. Keeping every species if you can call it that, in their boundaries.

Dinner was served and we had to fake eat it to keep up the appearance. Can't get away with every damn thing.

I was having another drink, gin this time when another one decided to delve into confronting me on the balcony.

"It's a beautiful night, isn't it, Jasper?" I turn to my so called brother.

He himself had a stiff drink in his hand. Something I had noticed he did recently. Edward never drank.

We both gaze up at the dark skies illuminated by stars and most of all, the big moon.

"The moon's out."

"Surprised the wolves aren't howling, huh?" Edward dryly chuckles, taking a long sip of the liquor in his glass.

"Good one." I tip a hat to him.

"That's one thing I haven't failed at…"

"What'd you mean?" Even though I already knew.

His face suddenly contorted into the mixture of pain and sadness. His tone was bleak as he sputtered out, "She… they both came to you."

"Edward, I—" he cuts me off with the continuous shaking of his head.

For a moment I want to join the party and listen in on the toasts being given to the half breed niece of mine.

"I could kill you. I could be the very monster I feel that I am… but strangely, I—I don't want to."

For a moment I want to be able to kiss Bella like I used to when we ran away. And for a moment I wanted to tear my own brother limb from limb.

"Yeah, I could kill you too for taking what was rightfully mine and given to be by God or fate or whoever… but I don't want to and ain't going to, Edward." I shoot back, narrowing my eyes at him.

I didn't do it.

There was no need for explanation. He knew what he did and he knew he was wrong. He knew what he took and he knew what he lost.

Edward released a heavy sigh, licking his lips nervously. "What do I do?"

Find a way to travel back in time and stop yourself from stealing my mate.

"Sign the divorce papers." The latter was impossible and would take too long.

"Where do I go?" He asks.

"Wherever the road takes you." I shrug.

"My daughter… my—your Bella…" he trails off.

"The family will understand. And they already understand." I say. Knowing they were listening. And knowing that if Nessie figured it out, as did they.

Edward nods in acceptance. He is about to take off before he stops and turns to me. "I want you to know that I am happy for you… I tried to keep it all together. I knew for the longest that something was up. I knew that it wasn't the same and I knew that she was yours. I was selfish though. I was a monster and I am sorry for that."

"And I forgive you." Because I actually do. He's owned up to it. "As long as you can forgive me for letting it come down to this."

Edward holds out his hand. "Thank you, Jasper."

I shake it. "Your welcome, brother."

"Give the family and Nessie my regards." He gives a final glance to the party going on inside the grand hall behind us. Nods his head. "Until next time."

"Til' next time, Eddie."

And he was gone.

As you could guess, the rest of the part went on without a hitch. The cake, a red velvet-cheesecake finish, also Nessie's favorite, towered with butter-cream frosting and caramel truffles was served. She did what I liked to call revenge when she playfully and knowingly shoved some down her mother's throat knowing damn well we don't eat.

But the guests didn't and Bella had to go along with it. It was funny to see her try and keep a straight face while chewing through it. And to the vampires and wolves it was hilarious.

After that, Nessie's party ending with her favorite singer, paid off by Alice of course, to perform.

Lianne La Havas gathered in front of the audience of hundreds and began to strum her guitar beautifully while singing her song called Same As Me:

Hear this song. It's made for you,

long over due

So here goes,

Home truths that I have to disclose

... It strangely reminded me of all I had been through just to be with Bella. It took a while but it finally happened. It started when she first walked in the cafeteria and took a seat. She turned back to look at my family and I. And that's where it happened. I noticed her. It was my belief that I finally had found her. That I had finally found the one person to complete me. And he heard me. But couldn't hear her... he then wanted her.

Remove the mask you hide your handsome face, behind

It sucked balls to have to hide shit. It was hell to have to try and play nice with lil Eddie' for taking who was supposed to be mine. It was like hiding behind a mask. You ain't want no one to know or see how you felt for that one somebody.

"May I have this dance, cowboy?" I turn to face her. Dressed in a navy blue, sleeveless gown that hugged her curves and highlighted her pale, porcelain skin. I gladly accepted and held her close.

Take heed,

it's advice you might need

Then there was the incidents. The baseball game. Having to save her from James. Telling me I trust her. The birthday party.

I twirled Bella around and brought her back to me, not wanting her to be out of my grasp for even a second.

I know what truth you're hiding underneath

You are just the same as me

The truth shall set you free they say. It sure as hell did come out after the lil half breed was born and years later, shit hit the fan for her and him. And then came the sneak touches, sly flirts and overall feelings emerging. And us finding out we were two of a kind.

Take off your coat of fears, you'll find no use for your coat here

And then we decided. We knew. And we left for a journey that would shape and change our very lives and those around us. It was scary, it really was. I've seen some shit in my day but I ain't ever felt fear for what'd happen if someone was to stop us for being together. But she slowly convinced me that there wasn't a thing to be scared of.

Wipe away what wets your brow, its over now

Lay low

We loved. And loved. And loved. Until we couldn't love each other any more than we already did. And with that love came hate. And it almost, almost consumed what we had.

I know what truth your hiding underneath

But that shit ain't stop us. Because here I am, holding my woman. Kissing my woman. In front of everybody.

"Jasper..." Bella gasped after my lips broke away from hers. Her eyes turned black but she nervously glanced around. Of course some were looking. But many were tuned into the song and dancing just like us.

There was no hiding it. The most important people knew and most of all, we knew.

"I love you, Bella." I say, kissing her once more.

You are just the same as me...

She is.

You are just the same as me...

We are.

You are just the same as me...

Elsewhere, as Jasper and Bella shared one more kiss, the diligently signature of Alice Cullen was signed over the dotted line.

She sighed as if a big wave washed her clean. Alice smiled. And looked on at the people she loved enjoyed their time. She looked on as her now ex husband and still best friend / sister-in-law, Bella Cullen, free to be called Bella Whitlock or Bella Hale. Her eyes flashed and she went blank for a moment as she seen this happening again.

And smiled once more.

This was just as she saw it.

"I love you too, Jasper." Bella softly cooed, hugging him tight. The song carried on gently and the words rang.

One more time.

You are just the same as me...
