Mako pulled the pillow over his face trying to block the yellow glow of the living room light. He kicked at his blanket and finally throwing them off got out of bed. He stretched and ran a hand through his messy hair. He pulled on a bathrobe over his bare chest and boxers.
Korra was sprawled on the sofa. She had headphones on and was reading a book. She bobbed her head with the music and out occasionally left a hand up in emphasis with the music.
He smiled and shook his head. This was the fifth night this week she couldn't sleep. He sat down next to her on the sofa and wrapped his arm around her. She jumped slightly by the expectant contact but then nestled into his embrace.
Gently he removed the headphones with one hand and closed her book with his other. She tilted her head back so she could look at him. Her blue eyes were dimmed and dark bags circled her eyes. A grin cracked on her face and she reached back and mussed his hair up even more.
Leaning over Mako kissed her gently. He ran a hand through her hair and scouted around so she was able to use his lap as a pillow. Stroking her hair, he softly hummed the tune his mom had sang for him when he was younger.
She closed her eyes softly hummed along. "Mako, I can't sleep," Korra moaned.
"I know," he said leaning against the sofa.
"Tell me a story," she mumbled.
"Once there was an Avatar. She was the most amazing and skilled Avatar to ever exist. No matter what battle she was faced with, she did so with courage and conviction. She never wanted to let her people down, but what she didn't know was that she never could. No matter how scared or demanding the people were she always managed to do what needed to be done. And now, she is entering into a brand new challenge. In less than week she will not only be the best Avatar, she'll also be the best mother."
Korra smiled during the story, and when she had finally drifted off to sleep Mako carefully carried her back to bed.
