As soon as the receiver is back in the cradle tears begin to roll down Wilhelm's face. He's been holding his emotions in for too long. He sinks sideways onto Gertrude's lap. "I can't believe she's gone."

"Oh Wilhelm, you sound so tired and emotional. It's okay. Let it all out. We should go pack and get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a long day." Gertrude takes over being the responsible one for a while.

Wilhelm nods slowly but doesn't immediately move. He sniffs softly and reaches for his handkerchief in his pocket. He wipes his eyes and sits up. "You're right, Gertrude. We do need to pack and sleep. I don't know how well I'll sleep, but I should try."

Gertrude smiles sadly. She stands up and walks down the hall with Wilhelm trailing behind her. "Shall we just pack one bag for the two of us?" Gertrude asks as they enter the master bedroom.

"That's a good idea. That would make sure neither of us overpack. I'll get the big bag out." Wilhelm is trying to stay organized and in control. It's all he feels as if he has left right now. He's hastily packing and not very tidily at that.

"Wilhelm, watch what you're doing. You don't normally pack like this." Gertrude chastises gently. She folds his clothes and places them in the suitcase as he tosses them out of the closet. Gertrude is happy to see that he's not packing his uniform. She considers carefully what she should pack. She packs her things carefully on top of Wilhelm's.

Wilhelm sits down almost unseeing on the side of his bed. Gertrude is very concerned about him. "Danke for packing."

"Liebchin, I know you're not thinking very straight right now. Why don't you change and get ready for bed and I'll finish up here?" Gertrude suggests.

"Ja, good plan." Wilhelm says wearily. He changes into his pyjamas and goes into the bathroom.

Gertrude hears the faucet turn on and then Wilhelm's sobs over the water. She decides to leave him to grieve. She packs her black dress for the funeral at the top of the case before she changes into her nightgown.

Wilhelm comes out of the bathroom and sinks into bed waiting for Gertrude to come back from the bathroom before he falls asleep. He feels so world weary, but Gertrude is helping immensely.

When Gertrude comes out of the bathroom Wilhelm is almost asleep. She turns off the light in the bathroom and pads over to the bed. She climbs in next to Wilhelm and turns out the lamp on her side before she lays down. Wilhelm immediately has his arm around her waist pulling her close to him. "I love you." Wilhelm whispers in the dark.

"I love you too. Try and get some sleep. The morning will come sooner that way and we can go back to Dusseldorf." Gertrude says sweetly, rolling over and kissing Wilhelm. She knows she has to stay strong for him since he isn't usually. She lays awake waiting for him to fall asleep in her arms before she falls asleep dreading tomorrow. She's also dreading meeting his family. She was hoping this meeting would take place under better circumstances. Gertrude knows she can get Wilhelm through the funeral and all the planning, but she's rather hoping he can get her through the meet and greet portion with his family. She's more nervous than she has been in many years. Her sleep isn't calm and neither is Wilhelm's, unsurprisingly.
