The music played loudly as Emma drove with her extra large bag full of chocolate treats for Mary Margaret. Her friend was frantic on the phone earlier when she'd remembered that she'd forgotten the candy for their yearly Halloween Trick or Treat event. Mary Margaret was so upset but she had a lot on her mind with their baby due any day. She'd managed to calm her and all it took was agreeing to pick up the treats and deliver them.
David and Killian were working together on the late shift that night too. It was mandatory for the crew since Halloween seemed to be a night when people liked to do really stupid things. She hoped that tonight was not going to be busy for them but if the prior years were any indication of what they should expect that wouldn't be the case.
She pulled up to the Nolan's street and it was just as Mary Margaret told her, the street was blocked off by a police barricade. They were getting ready for the children to line the streets for the costume parade. That was one of the reasons her friend had been so frantic.
While Mary Margaret would have gone to get the candy herself, the 3 blocks she would have had to walk with the candy to get home would have been difficult for her. Even Mary Margaret finally agreed she'd needed to slow down since she was in the final days of her pregnancy.
Emma was actually happy for the break from work. She'd been helping Elsa with some of her cases as well as tracing skips on her own. She actually had people she loved and cared for in her life now so as much as she liked her job she missed her people.
It was a new concept in her life to have friends to miss and to believe that she could be working too much. She liked this new feeling and was ready to embrace it. She lived alone for too long and let the sins of her past plague her. She was slowly starting to forgive herself and actually allow herself to be happy.
The street was covered in beautiful colored leaves and the houses were all decorated in fall splendor. The Nolan's house was on a street that she'd always imagined her friends would live. It was the perfect place to raise a family. There were lots of smiling children and the houses looked like they were straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting.
She climbed the stairs to her friend's house passing the crooked faces of the lit jack-o-lanterns on the walk. She noticed the neighbor children on their porch whining to their mother that they were ready. As she approached the door, a very pregnant Mary Margaret was pacing back and forth in front of her. Had it been that long since she'd seen her friend because that baby bump looked like it was ready now.
Mary Margaret's face lit up when she saw her. "Emma, Thank goodness you made it. The children will be starting any minute."
She leaned in as close as she could for a hug. "Yeah, I saw them getting antsy over there."
"It's Halloween, can you blame them?"
Emma brushed her hair behind her ear. She could only remember going out for trick or treat once in her life and it was magical. "Yes, I can. Where can I put the candy?"
Mary Margaret waddled towards the corner table and picked up a big plastic cauldron. "Right here!"
She quickly opened each bag and dumped them into the pot. It was only when she was on her last bag that she noticed what Mary Margaret was wearing. She smiled wide." Are you Snow White?"
Her adorable friend smiled. "Yes, she's my favorite princess."
"It suits you."
Mary Margaret curtseyed in her dress. "Thank you. How would you feel about dressing up?"
She bit her bottom lip and smiled." Depends on what you have in mind. I draw the line at puffy princess dresses though."
"Well, its not puffy but, you'll see." Mary Margaret pulled the bag from behind the door and handed it to her. "Put this on. I think you will approve."
"Ok, but if there are frills on this I'm not coming out!" she called as she stepped into the powder room to change.
"I promise, you'll love it." Called her friend.
She opened the bag and pulled out the satin white dress. At first she thought her it was a bridal dress and then she saw the hood. She actually got a little excited when she went back into the bag and saw the rest of the costume. A fancy belt and a braided hair bun head band. Excitement took over when she realized it was Princess Leia. This was actually perfect. She would be a bad ass princess.
She quickly shed her clothing and pulled on the costume. She laughed when she admired herself in the mirror. She'd have to get a picture in this to send to Killian. The man loved Star Wars although she was sure he'd rather see her in the slave bikini.
She heard the sound of the doorbell and figured the festivities must have begun. She quickly gathered her other clothes and marched out to join her friend for the fun.
When she walked into the room Mary Margaret was at the door with bowl in hand and a gaggle of little witches standing in front of her. The woman appeared to be glowing. Her cheeks were tinged pink and her smile was bright. Being a princess was the perfect costume for her. She actually looked regal.
"Hey Princess Leia!" called one of the children.
She waved towards the group. Mary Margaret turned her head quickly to catch a glimpse and once again smiled wide. "Emma! You look amazing! Look at us, a couple of princesses. "
"Yeah, we do look pretty good."
"Let's sit on the porch. It's not too cold and I would love to put up my swollen feet."
"Sounds good. Let me take the candy cauldron."
They sat outside handing out candy to each little costumed child that approached. The little girls all wanted to stay and hang out with the princesses. She had to admit that she was really enjoying herself. It was the most fun she'd had in a while. She always loved Halloween but never really had the time to enjoy it.
The last of the kids were roaming the neighborhood looking for the remainder of candy when they decided it was time to go inside. She was glad her friend forgot the candy and they got to spend some time together. It had been too long since she had any girl time with her friend.
She grabbed the cauldron and followed her friend into the house. They quickly shut off the light on the porch to deter any further visitors from knocking. She put the candy on the coffee table and grabbed just one more brightly wrapped treat for herself.
The chocolate and caramel was so sweet and perfect. She'd just sat down on the fluffy couch when she heard a crash come from the kitchen.
She popped up and moved to see what happened. "Mary Margaret are you alright?" she asked as she entered the room.
Mary Margaret looked up towards her with flushed cheeks. "My water just broke."
She felt a surge of surprise run through her. "Ok, Let's get you to the hospital."
Her dear friend nodded." My bag is at the top of the stairs. I packed it a few weeks ago. David and I have been planning but we didn't expect this little bundle for a few more days."
She quickly ran upstairs and grabbed the bag. When she got downstairs Mary Margaret was waiting for her by the front door. "I called David to let him know but he was out on a distress call. Anna said she would make sure he got to the hospital as soon as she could get him on the phone. Oooooh, that was a big one." She said as she ran her hand over her bump.
"Ok, let's get you to the hospital. Have you been timing these contractions?"
"Yes, I've been having them all night but that's been the norm for the last few days."
"All night? You didn't say anything."
"Well it's been happening all week and I just figured it was like usual."
"We are going to have to take your car. My car is parked way down the block behind the barrier."
"Here are my keys." Smiled Mary Margaret.
"You ready?"
Her friend was standing there grinning from ear to ear with tears in her eyes. "The next time I walk through this door I'm going to have a baby in my arms."
She leaned over and hugged her friend. "Let's go Mommy."
They got into the car and drove down the block towards the barricade, The police were already there removing them. She stopped and waited noticing a familiar face, Sheriff Humbert. She didn't have time to stop and chat so she hoped he didn't notice her, no such luck.
He approached their window and knocked. "Good evening ladies. Where are you off to in such a hurry?"
"Look, I need to get her to the hospital. We don't have time to stop and chat. Can you please move that thing so we can get out of here?"
He looked over to Mary Margaret who was counting through her contraction and then back to her. "Myrna, can you help me with this one, I need to let them go. Good Luck Mrs. Nolan and Congratulations."
She sighed in relief. "Thanks!"
He waved them through and they hurried on their way. They made it to the hospital in no time. Mary Margaret remained poised the whole time until they got to her room. David still hadn't called back and she could see this was beginning to worry her friend.
"If we don't hear from him soon I'll go out and look for him. I won't let him miss this. You've both waited too long."
Mary Margaret nodded and sat down on her hospital bed. She looked like a sad princess sitting there with her crowned head hung on what would ultimately be one of the happiest days of her life.
She plucked her phone from her bag and quickly tried calling Killian. His phone also went right to voicemail. She sent him a quick text.
E: Killian, I'm at the hospital with Mary Margaret. It's baby time! Get David here as quickly as you can. XO
Things started happening quickly once the hospital staff started getting Mary Margaret ready for the birth. Her labor was progressing quickly. Apparently all the prior contractions were the start of labor. She did all she could to comfort her friend even though she knew that she was just a poor substitute in that moment for her real birth partner.
The Nolans had been trying to have this baby for so long and she knew that David would also want to be there. She popped out of the hospital room and called Anna at the station again. David still hadn't called in. They'd been dispatched for a distress call and it turned out to be a bigger blaze than they'd expected.
She was just about to go in and tell Mary Margaret the news when she saw David turn the corner in front of her and stop at the desk. "David, in here quick!" She called.
He perked up and rushed forward towards her smiling brightly. He was still in his full fireman gear and she could tell he was extremely excited too. "Ah, Princess Leia!" He said patting her head as he passed her.
She'd forgotten she was in costume. "Good Luck David!" She felt her body relax knowing her friend would be relieved too.
She was just about to head back in when a familiar pair of blue eyes caught her gaze. She felt the smile spread across her face. Killian rushed towards her grinning from ear to ear. He scooped her into his arms hugging her tight and pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "You look amazing Princess."
She felt warmth rush across her cheeks. "You like the costume?"
He pulled back and glanced at her from head to toe. "Bad Ass Princess, Perfect costume for you."
"Mary Margaret thought so too."
"Speaking of, how is she?"
"I'm sure she is relieved now that David is finally here."
"I got him here as fast as I could. We put that fire out as quickly as possible once we got the call. Scarlet and Robin came in to relieve us so we could leave."
"Really? That was so nice of them."
"Yeah, I had to drive Scarlet's beater to get here."
"Oooh, the beater? I'm surprised you could go over 50."
"David had one hand on my knee the whole time pushing us to go faster."
She laughed. "I'll bet he did."
"I thought you were going to be on a stake out tonight?"
"Mary Margaret forgot their candy so she called me. I bailed on the stake out to go have a little Halloween fun. It's a good thing she called. I'm glad that I was able to be here for this."
Killian pulled her into his arms and hugged her. "Me too. Perhaps it was fate she forgot it so she wasn't alone when it was time."
She nodded." I wouldn't miss this for anything."
It was about 45 minutes later when the Nolan baby made its arrival into the world. David emerged from the room with a huge smile on his face. "It's a Boy!"
They stood in unison and walked over to greet the new father. "Congratulations!"
"Congratulations mate!"
"Mary Margaret and the baby are doing great. They just took him back for his check up and they are finishing up with his mom. He'll be in the nursery in a few minutes if you want to see him."
"Of course! Lead the way."
Killian grabbed her hand and they followed the eager father towards the nursery. When they arrived there were two sleeping infants in their little cribs. They looked so peaceful. They could see the nurses cleaning up baby Nolan in the back.
David was smiling and waving as if the little bundle could already see him. He looked at them grinning. "That's my boy." Killian was standing behind her holding her close as he peered over her shoulder. "He's a big boy Dave." She couldn't help but smile at the sight of the new life.
The nurse wrapped the soft blue blanket around his tiny pink body and laid him in the little crib closest to the window in front of them. She looked over to see David had tears in his eyes as he looked over his new son. She couldn't help but tear up herself knowing that her friends finally got the baby they always wanted.
"Look at how adorable he is."
David nodded. Killian squeezed her shoulder pressing a kiss to the top of her head. They stayed and watched over him until the nurse told them it was ok to go back to the room.
Mary Margaret was sleeping peacefully when they returned. Her eyes popped open as they entered. "Did you see him?" she whispered.
She smiled at her friend. "He's beautiful."
"He's a big boy. I give you much credit." Said Killian.
"He's here. I'm finally a mother." Smiled Mary Margaret.
Her husband sat next to her on the bed and grabbed her hand. "Nurses said everything is perfect, he's perfect. They are going to bring him around soon. You should get some rest. We are going to be busy soon enough."
Mary Margaret nodded. "I love you David."
He pressed a kiss to his wife's brow. "You did great Mom. I love you too."
"David, I drove your car here so you can get home." Said Emma handing him the keys.
"Thank you, are you leaving?" he asked.
Emma looked to Killian and back to David. "Well we should probably let you guys have a family moment."
David looked up smiling. "Well then I think that means you both should stay at least until you meet our son."
She couldn't help but smile. "Ok, of course. We would love to meet him."
They waited in the hall with a steaming cup of coffee to allow Mary Margaret some time to rest. David sat with them anxiously awaiting the nurse's arrival with his son. The man wouldn't stop smiling. As soon as he saw her wheeling the little crib towards them he hopped from his seat and quickly moved to escort them.
She turned to Killian and smiled. "Ready to meet him?"
"Aye, let's go meet the little tyke."
David had the little bundle in blue in his arms when they came in. Mary Margaret looked to them sleepily with a big grin on her face.
"So, does he have a name yet?" asked Emma.
"Well we've been debating about this the last few weeks. I think we finally came to an agreement." Said David as be bounced the little bundle lightly.
"We decided that he should be named David, after his father."
They looked down at the little sleeping boy in front of them. She couldn't help the smile spreading across her face. "Welcome to the world David."
"Would you like to hold him?" asked David.
She nodded and carefully took the tiny bundle from him. Killian stared down over her shoulder. "Hello little one."
She looked up into his happy blue eyes. "He's perfect."
Just as the words came out of her mouth the little boy opened his mouth and showed off his lung power. David laughed and Mary Margaret sat up alert. She quickly walked over to his waiting mother. "I think he's looking for you mom."
Mary Margaret teared up again as she reached forward taking her little boy into her arms. "Come here to Mommy."
"He's got a great set of lungs Dave." Said Killian.
His proud father nodded. "He does!"
"We are going to take off and let you feed this little guy. Call me and let me know if you need any help. We'll come by soon."
Killian shook David's hand. "Congratulations mate."
"Thank you both for everything. We'll see you soon." Said David as he walked them to the door.
"No problem. It's what family does right?"
David nodded. "Right."
Killian wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her close. "What say we go home and make the most of the rest of this night Princess?"
"Sounds like a good plan to me. I have a few tricks and treats in mind for a certain scoundrel."
"Let's hope the force is with us getting home in Scarlet's beater."
She nodded. "Let's go home."
