A/N: Welp. It's official. The Legend of Korra is over. :( This is so very sad.
A/N 2: Fixed whatever the heck happened here.
Mako's body hit this floor as soon as Bolin was half-way back up the ladder. And in that moment, he felt his heart plummet.
No! No! Not his brother! Spirits please, anyone but Mako!
Leaving his brother behind to destroy the spirit vines was the hardest thing that Bolin had ever had to do in his life.
For so long, Mako had been his entire world. His confidant, his rock, his provider and his best friend. He was always there, whether it was brooding, unbelievably awkward, or simply just being there. Mako was always looking out for his younger brother and others, but this time, Bolin feared was the last.
He shook himself, unwilling to let his thoughts travel down that path. Right now, he needed to get to his brother. And with that mindset, Bolin charged the rest of the way up the ladder and pulled his brother away from the spirit energy.
Bolin didn't really remember what all happened after he grabbed his brother. One minute, he was climbing down yet another ladder, and the next, it was crumbling before him, and they were plummeting to the ground, and in the next, he was gathering his wits from the fall.
His gaze landed on his brother's still form, and all Bolin's aches and discomforts were immediately forgotten. It's what Mako had always done for him. Now, it was time to repay him for his sacrifices throughout the years.
"Mako…" His voice, though quiet, still seemed too loud in the stillness that surrounded them. His brother gave no indication that he had heard him, and Bolin had to squash down a wave of panic that threatened to engulf him. Never, had his brother not answered him when he called out his name.
Bolin moved closer, and cradled his brother's head and shoulders close. Mako was alive. His arm was burned, and he had scrapes and bruises, but he was breathing and that's all that mattered to him at that point.
"Come on, Mako. We gotta get out of here." he carefully jostled his brother, which earned him an annoyed grunt. "Wake up, Bro."
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Mako's eyes fluttered open and a breath that Bolin hadn't realized he was holding was escaped him.
"Think you can walk?" he asked.
"Mmmm'yeah… Think so." the slurring was worrisome, but at that point in time, all that mattered that Mako was alive. Thank the spirits.
"Good. Come on. Korra still needs our help."
Gingerly, Bolin helped his older brother to his feet and lead him away from the twisted haul of Kuvira's weapon.
It was time to face to destruction.
