Episode 57:Goodbyes Are Always The Hardest

Trent blinked blearily as he awoke. He was greeted by the familiar tile of a hospital ceiling. The sound of a heart monitor droned in his ears. Once his eyes adjusted to the light, he glanced over to his right. A vase of fresh flowers sat atop the bedside table, along with a small balloon.

With some effort he sat up, body protesting the whole way. Pinpricks ran along his limbs, as he regained feeling in them. A subtle soreness soon came, running through his whole body. He then rubbed his head, trying to shake off his grogginess.

He glanced over at the bedside table once more, spotting his d-brace by the vase. He picked it up, and examined it absently. When the fog cleared from his thoughts, his last memory flashed through his mind. The image of thousands of glittering particles, raining down like snow.

"That's right. We...won." His lips curled into a smile. "It's actually over."

Before he could ponder that thought any longer, he was interrupted by his hospital door swinging open. His mother stepped through, wearing her nurse uniform.

She suddenly stopped dead, as her eyes met Trent's. There was a long silence, before the woman rushed over to his side. She then wrapped her arms about him, embracing him tightly.

"Let me guess. You were worried sick?" Trent asked with a smile.

Sarah smiled back, and kissed him on the forehead. "Like you wouldn't believe."

"So, how long was I out this time?" Trent asked.

"Five days."

"So...what happened?"

"Well…"

Sarah started to give her best account of the events that had followed after Daemon's defeat. Apparently, after the group had fallen unconscious, Angewomon had gathered them all up. The generals were soon healed as well, using up the last of the angel's strength. The group all moved to what remained of Daemon's base, thankfully finding several functioning portals. Sinclair tuned them to her own portal, and everyone passed through to the other side.

"They brought you all to the hospital after that. The digimon have been staying over at our place, as well as Mr. Thorne's." The woman let out a heavy sigh. "By the way, that digimon of yours has a bottomless pit for a stomach."

Trent held back a laugh. "Yeah, tell me about it."

"Not long after you were brought here, the generals left." Sarah continued. "Apparently there were still some digimon encircling the city. They went to take them out, and clean up anything else left behind by Daemon. Including all his jamming devices."

She moved to a seat nearby. "The military came in not long after. The digimon had been keeping them out. They started clean up, and rescue efforts, with help from the UN. It's been pretty hectic, to say the least. The news all over the world is talking about it."

"Have they said anything about the digimon?" Trent asked anxiously.

"No." Sarah replied, shaking her head. "If the government does know something, they're doing their best to cover it up."

Trent could only nod that. It was best not to dwell on that thought for now. It was too far out of his control.

"What about the rescued people?" he asked, after a few moments.

"A large part of the recovery efforts are taking care of that too." Sarah answered. "I don't know the details, but their all being returned to their homes after going through a series of examinations. From what I've heard, none of them seem to remember anything after the mist came."

"It's probably better that way." Trent sighed.

Trent felt a little disgusted saying that. He couldn't imagine what it would be like, to be controlled like that, never really knowing what happened. Being in your living room one minute, and then wandering the streets a few days later the next.

He shivered at thought, but tried to push it aside.

"There was one last thing." Sarah continued, pulling him from his thoughts. "The digimon apparently got a message from someone named, Alphamon? He wanted to meet with all of you once you've recovered."

Trent could only nod at that. Several moments of silence then passed between the pair, neither really knowing what to say.

"So...I guess you saved the world?" Sarah eventually asked.

Trent chuckled lightly, looking over at her. "Yeah, I guess we did." He glanced back down to his d-brace. "Though...I don't think that's really sunk in yet though. It doesn't feel real."

"My entire life hasn't felt real for the past couple of weeks." Sarah laughed.

Trent laughed as well, and sighed. "Sorry I put you through all this."

Sarah leaned forward, and placed a hand over his. "Don't apologize sweetheart. I'd do it again in a heartbeat."

Sinclair's car pulled up near the institute. She soon stepped out, adjusting her glasses. Not far away, she could see crews repairing damage from the battle there. Heavy cranes lifted up steel beams, and road rollers were repaving parts of the street.

She ignored them all, and moved toward the institute entrance. It was still mostly abandoned, most of her colleagues having yet to return. She passed only two staff members as she headed toward her lab, offering them only the barest greeting.

With a flip of a switch, the lights in her laboratory flickered on. Her eyes soon fell upon her portal ring at the end of the room. She stared at it thoughtfully for several moments, before moving toward the portal generator's console.

With several keystrokes, she brought up her files on the project. All of it was there. Every calculation, all her compiled notes on other dimensions, the mechanics of interdimensional travel... Three years of research, all compiled in this pc, along with her personal back ups at home.

Sinclair sighed heavily, and made several more keystrokes. A window then popped up on screen.

"Are you sure you want to purge all system files?"

Sinclairs hand lingered over the mouse for several moments. Then, with a heavy sigh, she clicked yes. She then watched as all of the files were slowly deleted. Her years of work, disappearing into the ether.

"Mankind, isn't ready for this knowledge." she whispered. "Not yet."

Sinclair moved toward the exit, hand hovering over the lightswitch. She spared one last glance at the portal ring, before flicking off the lights, and heading out. Leaving her lab in total darkness once more.

It was two days later, when the group headed out in Kiko's van. June joined them, sitting in the back with Gatomon. Following behind the van, was Sarah, carrying Mr. Thorne, and Emily.

Everyone was mostly silent, as they drove through the city streets. Repair crews were around just about every corner, moving debris, and fixing any property damage. Military personnel could also occasionally be seen. Apparently they had set themselves up there, until it was certain that the city was well, and truly safe.

The small convoy arrived at a military checkpoint as they reached the city limits. After a brief inspection they were allowed to pass. They drove for nearly half an hour, out toward a more rural area. Stretches of farmland were all around, most of them enclosed by barb wire fence.

The two cars eventually pulled into the driveway of an abandoned farmhouse. Everyone then stepped out, looking at the surroundings curiously.

"You sure this is where we're supposed to meet Alphamon?" Gale asked, turning to Gatomon.

"Trust me, this is it." the cat answered.

The large group began to move through the nearby pasture, creating a path through the long grass. Soon they spotted a large barn. It was weathered with age, its red paint peeling in various places. Most of its form was obscured, surrounded by a small orchard of pecan trees.

As they neared, they spotted the towering form of Alphamon. Standing to his left, was Wisemon, floating just above the ground. On his right, Gankoomon, Gallantmon, and Omnimon stood. All three looked wary, occasionally scanning about.

"It's good to see you again, chosen." Alphamon greeted, as they approached.

"You too, Alphamon." Trent replied.

Alphamon nodded, and looked to the other members of their number. "I see you brought guests."

"I'm Sarah, Trent's mother." the woman said. She offered him an awkward bow. "It's a pleasure to meet you, your...grace?"

Alphamon chuckled. "Please, there is no need for such formalities. You have raised a fine son."

Sarah bowed again. "Thank you."

Alphamon looked to the others, who introduced themselves as well. With formalities out of the way, Alphamon turned back to the chosen twelve.

"I'm glad that you could all join me here today."

"Not to be rude, but why meet here, of all places?" Huckmon asked.

"It's a secluded location, where we won't draw any attention." Alpahmon answered. "And…" He turned to Wisemon, giving the wizard a nod.

Wisemon nodded back, and made several signs with his hands. A field of energy soon flickered nearby. As it disappeared, a giant swirling rift was left in its place.

"This is where the the portal near Nexus lead." the knight finished. "We've been keeping an eye on it, so no humans, or animals stumble through. Wisemon created a cloak spell to keep it hidden. Now, onto the business at hand."

Alphamon held out his hand, summoning forth his blade GradAlpha. "Trent, will you please step forward."

Trent blinked in surprise, and moved to stand before the knight general. The others watched curiously, as Alphamon appraised him.

"I've heard of your valor from two of my generals." He gestured to Gallantmon, and Gankoomon. "You've shown great heroism, honor, and courage, befitting of a royal knight. So, I wish to bestow upon you the title. Do you accept?"

Trent was taken aback for a moment. He turned to his companions for advice. All of them gave him encouraging nods, especially his partner, and mother. With their approval, he turned to Alphamon, and gave a single nod.

"Good. Do you know our oath?"

"Yes, sir." Trent answered, swallowing nervously.

"Then, please, recite it for us."

Trent sighed anxiously, and cleared his throat. "A knight must serve with honor, and humility. They defend those in need, and smite evil wherever it may rear its head. Their word is bond, and they speak only truth. They will keep valor burning in their hearts in the face of fear. They will serve only justice, until they breathe their last breath."

Alphamon nodded. "Now, kneel."

Trent quickly took a knee, and Alphamon gently touched the blade to each of his shoulders. "By my authority, as leader of the royal knights, and the powers vested in me by GOD. I dub thee, Sir Trent, captain of the royal knights. You may rise."

Trent followed his command, and turned to the gathered.

"All hail, Sir Trent!" Alphamon shouted.

"All hail, Sir Trent!" the gathered crowd repeated.

Trent moved to stand with his friends once more, several of them offering congratulations.

Alphamon motioned for the twelve to line up. He then called over June, and Gatomon to stand alongside them. With another motion, Wisemon moved toward the general, carrying a large wooden box. He then pressed two buttons on the side, popping it open.

Inside, was a soft cushion of velvet. Nestled atop it were twelve golden medals, along with two pins. The medals were hung with a cord of the finest cloth. Each one was embedded with a carved gemstone, that glittered with swirls of rainbow color. The smaller pins were made of brass, and shaped into seven sided stars, and set with a blue stone.

"Chosen twelve." Alphamon began. "For your bravery, and service to all worlds, I would award you with the highest honor I can give. These medals are made of Huanlong ore, the most precious metal in all the digital world."

Wisemon began to place the medals around their necks, as Alphamon went on.

"The ore is born from the scales of Huanglongmon, the leader of the sovereigns. It represents your commitment to keeping balance in the digital world. The gem in the center, is the crystallized essence of liquid data. The very life blood of digimon. Representing all of the lives you have protected, and saved with your actions."

Wisemon then moved toward June, and Gatomon. The cat stood proudly, while her partner tried to hide her nervousness.

"Gatomon, you were instrumental in saving Nexus against the machines. And, you aided the chosen in their battle. For this, I award you the core of bravery, for your heroism."

Wisemon handed off the pin, which Gatomon took gratefully.

"June. I have also been told you showed great bravery in aiding the twelve. To rescue the humans who were captured by Daemon. Though you may think your role minor, I believe it is deserving of praise. So, i offer you the the core of bravery as well."

Wisemon moved forward, pinning the award to June's shirt. She nodded gratefully in response.

Gatomon, and June then stepped back, leaving the twelve to stand together. Alphamon gazed over each of them, as they looked forward with pride.

"Chosen twelve." he began. "You have done so much. Countless lives, and entire worlds have been saved, thanks to your actions. You have gone above, and beyond the calling of the sigil, and risen, as the greatest of heroes. So, on behalf of all, I offer my deepest, and sincerest gratitude."

Alphamon then fell to one knee, bowing low before the group. Wisemon, and the three knight generals soon followed his example.

"This all a bit much." Gale whispered. "Its kinda making me uncomfortable."

"Yeah, me too." Misaki agreed.

"Just take it in stride." Ryudamon offered in low tones. "We don't want to come off as ungracious."

After several moments, Alphamon, and the others rose once more.

"Now...there is only one more piece of business." Alphamon sighed heavily. "I'm afraid...it's time for us-" He gestured to the partner digimon. "All of us-to head home."

Everyone's eyes widened, mouths hanging agape. None of them could speak, too stunned to make any kind of reply. Each felt their hearts tighten, and anxiety settle into the pits of their stomachs.

"We cannot keep the rift open forever." Alphamon continued. "The longer we, and the portal stay here, the more we risk human's discovering it, and us. Daemon has caused enough damage here. I dare not risk anymore." His eyes softened, along with his voice. "I...know that this sudden, and...I apologize deeply for that. You...have until sundown today to prepare, and...say your farewells."

Kiko, and Lunamon sat at the back end of the barn. Old farming implements were arranged a few yards to their right. There was even an old tractor. It's once red paint was peeled, showing only rust beneath. Vines were entwined around its wheels, and a patch of clovers grew from the seat cushion. A sparrow sat atop the smokestack, singing its song.

"I decided to start that band." Kiko stated, breaking the silence.

"Really?" Lunamon asked. "Do you know who's gonna be in it?"

"Not a clue." Kiko chuckled. "Maybe I'll ask some of the others if they know how to play any instruments."

His chuckle turned into a genuine laugh, which Lunamon joined in on.

"I do know one thing for sure though." Kiko continued. "No matter what, I'm gonna call the band...Lunar Muse."

Lunamon blushed at that, feeling utterly flattered. "It's...a good name."

"Thought you'd like it." Kiko smiled.

There was another silence, before Lunamon spoke up again.

"Y'know I'm starting to think back to the first time I thought we would say goodbye." she began, voice quiet. "I was so scared. I knew that I would never see you again. I was scared of...being alone. That...I would just be nothing again. A shy, weak, little digimon with no real redeeming qualities. Without you...I was worthless."

"Lunamon…"

She turned to him with a smile. "But, I know that was never true. Because of you, and...all the things we've done, I found my self worth. To love, and accept myself. Even the parts that I hated. I've become stronger." Her ears drooped sadly. "I'm still not totally ready to say goodbye. But...now I know that you'll always be with me in a way. And...that I'm my own person."

Kiko sniffled, eyes ringing with tears. "I'm glad...you were able to find yourself. You helped me too, yknow? Without you, I might have never spoken to Ray again. I was able to forgive myself because of you." The boy wiped his eyes. "I'm gonna miss you so much."

"Me too."

Kiko grabbed Lunamon in his arms wrapping her tightly. She hugged him back as hard as she could, squeezing with all her might.

"I love you." Kiko cried, a tear falling.

"Love you too." Lunamon whispered.

When the two separated, Kiko wiped away at his eyes. Lunamon watched him with a soft smile, and looked out to the pastures. Only moments later, a blue jay came fluttering in, landing on a tree nearby. Lunamon smiled a little wider, and suddenly began to sing.

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah

Zip-A-Dee-A

My oh my, what a wonderful day

Plenty of sunshine heading my way

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah

Zip-A-Dee-A

Lunamon turned to her friend, who smiled back warmly. He then cleared his throat, beginning to sing as well.

Mister bluebird on my shoulder

It's the truth

It's actual

Everything is satisfactual

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah

Zip-A-Dee-A

Wonderful feeling

Wonderful day

The two soon began to sing in unison, voices melding together.

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah

Zip-A-Dee-A

My, oh my, what wonderful day

Plenty of sunshine, heading my way

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah

Zip-A-Dee-A

As the last words of the song crossed the duos lips, Lunamon leaned against Kiko. The boy sniffled, and pulled his partner closer to his side.

Chloe sat crossed legged amongst a patch of wildflowers. With great care she began daisy chaining the blossoms together. She made sure to use a variety of flowers, creating a crown of multiple colors.

Fanbeemon fluttered about nearby, examining some of the larger flowers. Occasionally she would spot a butterfly, or one of her smaller cousins. Which we watched with great fascination.

"Emily's gonna miss having you around." Chloe said, as she plucked another flower.

Fanbeemon moved over to her partner, prodding her playfully. "Are you saying your not?"

Chloe sputtered, blinking in surprise. "What? Of course I am!"

"I know. I know. I was only joking." Fanbeemon chuckled.

Chloe shook her head with a laugh, and returned to her work. After tying off another knot, her face turned slightly sullen.

"I do really mean that though." she sighed, lazily playing with one of the flower petals. "It's so strange to think that...we've only really known each other for a few months. But, with everything that's happened, it feels like it's been so much longer."

"I kind of felt that way as soon as we met." Fanbeemon said, looking downward. "Like...I had known you all my life. There was part me that just...knew I had be with you. To help you, and protect you."

Chloe smiled at her warmly. "Well...you did both of those things. I can't count how many times you saved my life. But...maybe more important, you helped me talk about my mother again." She clutched a hand to her chest. "I never realized how much I had been bottling it all in. And how much it was hurting me not to talk about it. Until you came along."

She paused for a moment pondering. "If it weren't for that, I don't know if I could have faced my mother like I did. I would have just...stayed silent, and never gotten to really let it all out. And...your were also just there when I needed you." Chloe took in a shuddering breath, holding back a sob.

Fanbeemon fluttered over in front of the girl. She came face to face with her, holding back tears of her own. With a gentle touch, she booped Chloe's nose. The girl laughed, and did the same to Fanbeemon's forehead.

Chloe then looked back down to her work, tying off one last knot. After giving it a once over, she reached up, placing the newly made flower crown atop Fanbeemon's head.

"There. As pretty as a princess." Chloe sniffled.

Fanbeemon tried her best to hold her composure, but a single tear rolled down her cheek.

"Aren't I always?" she laughed.

Chloe smiled at her, and pulled Fanbeemon into a hug.

Shafts of golden sunlight shone between the wooden beams of the barn. They lit up the space inside, casting long shadows all about. Straw was strewn across the old wooden floorboards. Cobwebs hung from the rafters, catching the afternoon sun. Along with millions of dust motes, that drifted through the air.

A set of stairs lead up to a large loft. Several bales of hay, along with some farming implements were stored there. Misaki, and Magimon sat atop one of the bales, partially sinking into the golden softness. A window up above let in a large stream of sunlight, that bathed them both in its warm glow.

"Do you know what your going to do?" Misaki asked. "Once you head back to the digital world, I mean."

Magimon sighed, pondering for a moment. "Well...there will be a lot of clean up to do first. The digital world is in a bit of a chaotic state. After that though...I think I might head back to the academy. Perhaps I'll take up teaching."

Misaki turned to him in surprise. "Teaching? Really?"

"I did develop several new spells on our travels. Lest you forget." the wizard said proudly. "And, because of the power of the oracles eye I was able to glimpse forgotten knowledge. My mind is already bursting with the possibilities! I could even teach Wisemon a thing or two!"

Misaki rolled her eyes at that.

"What about you?" Magimon asked, after a moments silence. "Were you able to...work everything out with your father?"

Misaki smiled, and nodded. "He said...I was free to draw again. I don't think he fully supports it yet, but it's a start. I'm definitely going to keep practicing, and get better." She paused for a moment. "I even thought about writing, and illustrating children's books a couple years down the road. I already have an idea for one."

"Oh, really?" Magimon asked. "What's it about?"

Misaki looked away wistfully as she replied. "It's about a young girl who wants nothing more than to perform magic. But, those around her think she's wasting her time. She slowly begins to believe them, and almost stops magic all together. Then...one day she meets a mysterious wizard who takes her on as his apprentice."

She looks over at Magimon with a soft smile. "They journey together across the land, having all kinds of adventures. Along the way, the wizard rekindles the girl's passion for magic. As well as inspires self confidence in her abilities." She laughs a little to herself. "The wizard can be a bit of show off, but she grows to consider him a good friend. The pair even meet a fairy, and a lady knight."

A blush crosses her features. "Who...the girl begins to care for deeply. And the four travel together, having even more adventures."

"I assume I'm getting royalties for the use of my likeness?" Magimon quipped.

Misaki smiled smugly. "What makes you think the wizard is you?"

The two began to snicker, which turned into genuine uproarious laughter. It soon died down, and a silence hung over the pair.

"Thank you though...for everything." Misaki whispered, breaking the quiet.

"Likewise." Magimon replied. "Meeting you, was easily the greatest thing to ever happen to me. I...was not the most social digimon. After I left the university, I really hadn't made any other friends. Then you came along." He turned to her, smiling beneath his hood. "It was so wonderful to talk with someone who shared my interests again. I will always cherish our conversations, and our time together."

Misaki smiled at that, then reached into her bag. After digging for a few moments, she pulled out her sketchbook, and held it out for Magimon.

"Here. It's the sketch book I had when we arrived in the digital world. I filled every page. I...want you to have it."

Magimon hesitated for a moment. "Are...you sure?"

Misaki nodded. "Think of it as a keepsake. Something to remember me by"

The wizard took it gently. "I'll treasure it...always."

"I'm sure you will."

Chakoramon stood perched atop one of the pecan trees branches. Derek sat just below her, leaning back against the bark of the tree. He was bathed in several small pools of light, that shifted with the motions of the tree. A subtle breeze blew, ruffling leaf, hair, and feather.

Derek grabbed one of the newly fallen pecans. He cracked it open with a small stone, and devoured the soft flesh inside.

"I'm still surprised I didn't drive you away." he stated, tossing the shell aside.

Chakoramon blinked in surprise, and leapt down. She landed before her partner, cocking her head curiously.

"I mean I was such a freaking idiot." Derek continued. "I was willing to endanger people lives, and make a deal with an actual demon. All for my own selfish reasons. But...you still stuck by me, despite all of it. You were always there for me." He looked up to her, eyes soft. "Just...standing silently by my side. I guess...what I'm trying to get at is...thanks. For putting up with my bullshit."

Chakoramon shook her head with a smile. "Even now, your still putting yourself down."

"Sorry. It's a habit I'm trying to break."

"You'd better." she warned. "Because I'm not going to be around to keep you from putting yourself down. Have faith in yourself. Just as I have faith in you. You've come a long way, don't forget that."

Derek looked down to his hand, curling his fingers absently. "I don't know if I really could have gotten as far as I did without you."

Chakoramon moved over, placing a wing on his shoulder. He looked up, eyes widening in surprise. For the first time since they met, Derek saw a single tear fall across Chakoramon's face.

"Derek. It goes both ways." she whispered. "Watching you try to become better, makes me want to do the same. We help each other. That's what partners-friends-do."

With great care, Chakoramon plucked one of her long feathers. She handed it off to Derek, who took it in his grip. It shone with sharpness, and felt as heavy as steel. A rainbow of color played across it like the surface of oil.

"There. Now a part of me will always be with you."

Derek stared at the feather for several moments, and set it aside. He then pulled off one of his silver rings, holding it out for her.

"It's...not quite the same but…"

Chakoramon smiled gently, and took the ring in her feathered grip. She then closed her eyes, and held it close to her chest.

"It's the sentiment, that matters."

Derek smiled back, and grabbed the feather once more. The pair sat silently after that, looking out across the pasture.

"Did you ever find out how much the sun weighed?" Chakoramon asked suddenly.

Derek chuckled lightly to himself. "You know what...I never did."

Gale stood at the edge of a pond that sat some distance away from the farmhouse. Afternoon sunlight, played off the slightly murky water. The occasional turtle could be seen taking a gulp of air. The girl skipped stones across the surface, hurling them with all the force she could muster. Ryudamon was at her side, watching her silently.

"Aren't you going to say anything?" he asked, finally breaking the long silence.

"What's there to say?" Gale snapped, tossing another stone. "Alphamon calls us all up out of blue. And is like 'Hey thanks for saving the world, and stuff, here's some medals. Oh, and by the way, sorry to spring this on you, but all the digimon have to go. Say goodbye to your friends forever!'"

She suddenly grabbed the biggest stone she could find, and tossed it into the pond. A large spray of water erupted where it landed, scaring off a pair of lounging turtles. She then pulled the medal off her neck, and dropped it to the ground.

"Fucking bullshit." she growled.

Ryudamon sighed, and moved over to pick up the medal. He wiped away the dirt, and mud with a paw, and held it to the light.

"Gale, you have every right to be upset." the dragon said sullenly. "But we both know it's not that simple. We can't stay here Gale. This...isn't our world."

Gale dropped the stone she was holding, and let out a drawn out sigh. "Yeah. Yeah, I know."

She moved to a patch of grass nearby, plopped herself down. The girl tucked in her knees, and stared ahead, brow furrowed. Ryudamon then took a seat beside her.

"I just-" She sighed again. "I just hoped that, after all this was over, we'd have the chance to just hang out more y'know? I could show you more of my favorite movies. We could practice together, and play games in the rec room when my parents weren't home. Just...spend time together, without all the end of the world, doom and gloom bullshit."

"I would have enjoyed that very much." Ryudamon sighed. "I wish I had at least gotten to see one more western with you."

"I was gonna rent the Dollars trilogy. Some of the best westerns ever made. We could have watched all three in a big movie marathon." Gale's head suddenly hung low. "It would have been fun."

"Despite how cliche it sounds." Ryudamon began. "I think we should be cherishing the time we had. Not the time that could have been."

"Your right." Gale laughed. "That is cliche."

"I'm proud of you. You know that?" Ryudamon stated.

Gale looked over at him, surprised by the sudden statement.

The dragon faced her before continuing. "You've grown so much. That rough exterior of yours has been smoothed down. You were finally able to drop your walls, and let people in. When we were at our lowest, you pulled us from the darkness, and lead us back to our path. Despite your misgivings about the destiny set before you, you sought to save those in need."

Ryudamon stood up, and placed the medal back around Gale's neck. "You're deserving of this, and much more. You've gone through so much, and have come out stronger for it."

Gale sniffled, wiping her eyes. "Alright, alright. Enough with the sappy speeches okay?"

"Of course." Ryudamon laughed.

Gale suddenly turned herself about, and pulled Ryudamon into a tight hug.

"I just want you to know. That your my best friend." she whispered.

Ryudamon leaned into the embrace, and smiled. "Now who's the one being sappy?"

When the two separated, Gale stood to her feet. She marched a few feet away, before taking up her muay thai stance.

"Do you wanna have one last spar?"

Ryudamon smiled, and took up his stance as well. "Very well."

Trent, and Huckmon lay out in the nearby pasture. Acres, and acres of tall green grass surrounded them in almost every direction. Like the surface of the ocean, the breeze sent ripples traveling across it. The chirrup of grasshoppers, and other insects could be heard, along with infrequent bird song.

Trent held his medal up to the sun. He watched the rainbow colors shift within the gem, and sunlight play off the gold. Huckmon watched the clouds drift by beside him, trying to find any recognizable shapes.

"So, how does it feel to be a knight?" Huckmon asked, looking over at his partner.

Trent's arm fell to his side. "Honestly? I'm still trying to process the whole saving the world thing. So, it'll take a while to sink in I think." He suddenly let out a laugh. "Hey, since I'm a captain, and your a general. Does that mean your my commanding officer?"

Huckmon grinned at that. "Yeah. I suppose it does!"

The two quickly shared a laugh, before falling into silence again.

"It really is wild to think about though." Trent said, after a moments quiet. "All the stuff we've been through. Getting sucked into a different world. Traveling halfway across a continent, to get back."

"Getting caught in an explosion of dimensional energy." Huckmon interjected. "And getting flung to different parts of the globe."

"Saving a town from a giant, and freeing digimon from slavery."

"Destroying a giant tower, and taking down an evil demon."

"Getting captured by a psycho clown in a town of toys." Trent shivered at the memory.

"Traveling to the capital of the digital world."

"Literally going to hell."

"Dying." Huckmon stated bluntly. "Then, coming back to life."

"Fighting two fallen angels, and the avatar of a god."

The two continued to go back, and forth after that. Going over all the major events after Lucemon's defeat.

"Then, finally, defeating a giant living demon fortress, and saving the world." Trent finished.

"And that's just the bullet points." Huckmon sighed.

"It's been a heck of a wild ride." Trent agreed. "But...now it's over."

"Yeah… Now we have to say goodbye."

Trent suddenly sat up, sitting cross legged. "It...doesn't have to be goodbye forever."

Huckmon sat up as well, blinking at him curiously. "What do you mean?"

"I think that...the digital world, and our world can't stay separate forever." Trent began. "I think it's only a matter of time, before someone else like Sinclair comes along. Or a random rift opens in the middle of a city. Because of our worlds coming closer into sync, it'll happen eventually. Not anytime soon, maybe even years from now, but eventually."

Huckmon gave a slow nod at that. "I remember Sarah saying something similar. Talking about the governments of the world investigating the whole thing, and keeping it secret. With time, they could eventually find some answers."

"Question is, will humans be ready when it happens?" Trent asked.

"Who knows? Only time will tell."

"Either way, I think we'll see each other again someday." Trent said, smiling at his partner.

"Hopefully, it'll be when there isn't a crisis." Huckmon replied, smiling back.

Trent moved in, wrapping his arms around Huckmon. "I'm gonna miss you buddy."

"Me too." Huckmon sniffled.

"You've done so much for me. I don't know how I could ever thank you."

Huckmon squeezed his partner tighter. "I could say the same. But you don't need to thank me. After all-"

"-what are friends for?" Trent finished, feeling his throat tighten.

"Yeah."

After a time, the six pairs all returned to the front of the barn. Where Alphamon, and the others waited. Sarah, and Mr. Thorne soon moved toward their children, offering whatever comfort they could.

"Are you all ready?" Alphamon asked.

Trent looked to each of his companions, all of them giving a nod. He then turned back to face the knight.

"As we'll ever be."

Suddenly an idea struck June from the blue. She quickly rushed forward, holding up her hands.

"Wait!"

Everyone blinked at her curiously, waiting for her to continue.

She then turned to the group of twelve, and her own partner. "Before all the digimon leave, why don't we take some pictures?!"

"Yeah, I like that idea." Chloe said with a nod. "We should at least get a group photo together."

Everyone turned to Alphamon expectantly.

The knight let out a long sigh. "Very well. As long as you keep the photos safe."

"I'll help you." Sarah offered.

Each of the teens offered the woman their various mobile devices. The group then all started to pose for their photo ops. Sarah had them start in twos, taking photos of each teen, and their partner together. She then had the six teens in a shot, followed by all their digimon together.

With a little work, she was then able to get all twelve in a single shot. Off in the distance, the sun was slowly beginning to move toward the horizon. All of them were bathed in a radiant, glow, and made a heroic silhouette. It was a perfect photo to commemorate their victory over Daemon.

Once all the devices were returned, each of the teens, along with their partners, moved toward the rift. They took a moment to stare at the vortex. Watching, as a rainbow of color cascaded within its confines.

"Well...I guess this is it." June said, turning to Gatomon.

"I suppose so." the cat nodded.

After a moment of awkward silence, June leaned down to give Gatomon a hug.

"I'm just sorry we didn't get to know each other better." June sighed.

"I feel the same." Gatomon replied, hugging back just as tight.

Magimon walked over to Chloe. "You take care of her. Alright?"

"Of course." Chloe nodded.

Fanbeemon fluttered in front of Misaki. "You do the same."

"She's in good hands." Misaki smiled.

Kiko, Gale, and Derek all leaned down to give their partners one last hug. Trent did the same, taking great care not cut himself on his partner's armor.

"You take care of yourself. Okay, buddy?" Trent whispered.

"You too." Huckmon replied.

After several moments, the friends finally separated. Then as one, the partner digimon moved to stand with Alphamon, and the others. Each of the royal knights gave one last bow of respect, before heading through the swirling portal. Wisemon gave a bow as well, and trailed after them

Then, one by one, the partner digimon stepped through the portal. They all offered a wave goodbye, then disappeared into the vortex. Soon only Huckmon stood at the portal's threshold. He spared one last long look at his partner, meeting his gaze. Trent offered him a smile, and a nod.

Huckmon gave him a nod back. "Until we meet again."

With that, the dragon stepped into the rift, disappearing from sight. Moments later, a powerful pulse of energy emanated from the portal. Slowly, it began to close, small sparks of energy crackling off it. Then with a bright flash, and a gust of wind, it vanished, leaving no trace it was ever there.

"Until we meet again." Trent whispered, a single tear rolling down his face.

6 Months Later…

Trent slipped his spiderman shirt over his head, followed by his hoodie, and beanie. Afternoon sunlight filtered in from his window. It shone over the scattered comic books, and other items that littered his desk. Hanging on the wall nearby, was his sword, along with his framed medal.

Trent soon heard a commotion at the door, followed by his mother's call.

"Trent! Kiko, and Gale are here!"

"Be there in a sec!" the boy called back.

Trent moved over to his bedside table, grabbing his goggles. He paused for a moment, to stare at the two framed photos there. The first was the group shot of all twelve of his friends, framed by the sun. And the other was of him, and Huckmon standing side by side. The boy's d-brace was nearby as well, sitting between them.

He smiled at the photos, and slipped his goggles on. He then moved into the living room, where Kiko, and Gale were waiting. The girl was sporting a small bruise just under her left eye.

"What happened to you?" Trent asked.

Gale touched a finger to the bruise before replying. "Eh, June got in a lucky shot when were practicing the other day. She's getting better."

Trent nodded at that. "She gonna be eating with us?"

"Nah. She had some gymnastics thing to go to."

"So, you ready to go?" Kiko asked.

"Yeah." Trent answered. "Mom, we're heading out!"

"Alright, have a good time!' Sarah called from her room.

The three friends then headed out the door. Trent let out a small shiver as he stepped into the winter cold. He could see the trees in the lot nearby had finally shed their leaves. Thanks to Houston's mostly warm weather, it was well after fall before they had even changed color. Now they lay scattered across the ground, carpeting it in a rainbow of warm color.

He, and his companions soon descended the stairs, heading toward Kiko's van. Gale immediately called shotgun, much to Trent's annoyance. He let out a sigh of happiness however, as Kiko turned on the car's heater. The other boy then turned on the radio, playing some soft rock tunes. Gale turned to look out the window, mouthing the words.

Trent soon noted the bits of musical equipment in the back. Several aux cords were coiled up, next to a pair amps. Laying nearby was Kiko's guitar, secured in its case.

"So, how's band practice been going?" Trent asked, as they pulled out.

"Pretty good." Kiko answered. "Finally found a decent drummer. We've been working on a couple songs since then."

"I wish he didn't freaking smoke though." Gale sighed. "Makes your car smell like ass."

"So that's what that smell is." Trent hummed, taking a whiff.

"Oh, come on. It's not that bad." Kiko said

Gale leveled him with a deadpan look. "Dude, it smells like a hipster's dorm room."

"Whatever, dude."

After a short drive, the three arrived at their destination. It was a chinese hole in the wall restaurant the group had discovered a couple of months back. A sign, depicting a golden dragon, floating through the clouds, sat above the entrance.

Trent looked across the street as he stepped out. He could see repair crews putting the final touches on a damaged building. Most of the repair work had been done throughout the rest of city over the last few months. The military had finally moved out as well just a month earlier.

"Looks like things are finally starting to get back to normal." Trent stated.

Gale followed his gaze, and sighed. "I don't think things will ever really be back to normal. Not after all the shit we've been through."

Trent could only nod at that.

Another familiar car soon pulled up beside Kiko's van. The three could see Mr. Thorne in the driver's side, who gave them a wave. Misaki, and Chloe stepped out a moment after, hand in hand.

"Hey, guys." Chloe greeted.

"The two lovebirds have arrived." Gale smirked.

"I wish you would stop calling us that." Misaki sighed.

"Yo, Misaki! I saw your newest piece on your blog!" Kiko exclaimed. "I really like the colors."

"Thanks." Misaki replied with a blush.

"I'm glad you finally started posting your work." Chloe said, turning to her girlfriend with a smile.

"I've gotten a lot of good criticism, and feedback." Misaki smiled. "It's been nice."

The group soon spotted Derek stepping out of a car on the other side of the lot. He held a phone to his ear, talking as he walked. Chakoramon's feather hung from a chain about his neck, glinting in the light.

"Yeah, I know." he said as he neared. "Listen, I gotta go. Just got to the restaurant. Alright. Talk to you later. Bye."

"Who was that?" Kiko asked.

"Gabriella." Derek answered, putting his phone away.

Gale smiled impishly."Ooooooh."

"It's not like that Gale." Derek sighed. "We're just friends.

"Whatever, dude." the girl shrugged. "Anyway, let's go eat. It's cold as tits out here, and I'm freaking starving."

There was a round of nods from everyone, and the group began to file inside. Soon, Trent was the only one outside. As he moved to follow his friends, he paused at the entryway. Out of the corner of his vision, he caught a faint shimmer of light.

He turned, and looked up in the sky. Off in the distance, he could see a single digicore, floating amongst the clouds. It hovered in place for a moment, before a swirling rift opened up nearby. The shining orb rushed inside, before the portal closed just as quickly as it had appeared. No one around seemed to have even noticed its sudden appearance.

"Hey, what's the hold up?" Gale asked, popping her head out.

Trent shook his head, and moved toward the door. "Its nothing. Don't worry about."

The six all soon sat down for a nice meal. They chatted, joked, and laughed together. Vague memories of their times around the campfire flooded their minds, as they did. Though a small part of them would always feel something was missing. They always enjoyed these days together, simply happy to have each others company.

The lone digicore floated from the rift, as it closed behind it. It drifted through the clouds, particles of data were soon drawn to it. The data began to circle it, like the rings around a planet. The core then drifted down, landing on a field of soft grass, amongst dozens of digieggs. Then with a flash of light, the data encircling it solidified, and formed into a hard shell. When the light passed, a newly formed digiegg was left behind, core pulsing within.

Upon a hill nearby, Huckmon stood proud. He looked down upon the small valley of eggs below, cloak billowing in the wind. His eyes focused on the newly arrived egg, his mind wandering to memories of the human realm, and his partner.

"Huckmon, it's time for us to go!" Ryudamon called. "We have work to do!"

The little knight suddenly turned about. He could see Ryudamon, and his other friends standing several yards away. All of them carried various types of tools, and building materials.

"Go on ahead!" Huckmon shouted. "I'll be right there!"

"If you say so!" Fanbeemon replied, before taking off.

Her other companions soon trailed after her. All of them heading down the hill, to a village just below. Huckmon watched them, before turning back to the field of digieggs. After several moments, he let out a sigh. He then spared one last glance upward, to the space where the rift had appeared, before heading off after his friends with a smile.

The End

Author's Notes

3 years. After 3 years, this story is finally over. Near the tail end of December in 2014 I posted the first chapter of this story, and have been working on it consistently until then. Up until that point, I had never worked on a single project for more than a few months before dropping it. It would take some time before I ever came back to it. But I finally decided to buckle down, and use most of my focus for one project. While I did get sidetracked here, and there I mostly stayed true to that. This project was always intended to be sort of a way for me to improve as a writer. It ended up meaning so much more than that to me. It was the first time I received genuine feedback, and praise for my work. Since I had never really posted all that much of my previous stuff. I want to thank you all for that, and the support you've shown me over these past three years. Some of your reviews, and comments have honestly left me feeling utterly humbled. The fact that I could bring even a handful of people some kind of joy, means more to me than you could all know. Some of have you even started following my page here on ff, and look forward to what I have in the future. Speaking of future projects, I will be taking a break from giant stories for a bit. I am currently working on a shorter story. Its very different from this. Its an au shipping fic about Blaze the cat, and Amy Rose. Its called Magenta Love, and you can read it over on A03 if your interested. After that, I have another big project I've been planning, called Digimon Cross, which is another digimon story, starring more of my original characters in my own setting. I also plan on finishing the last chapter of Battle For Nexus, so people can get the details on what happened there. There may also be a sequel to this story some time in the future, but that's still not concrete.

Again, I cannot thank you all enough for your support of this story. I would like to first give special thanks to BestOCmaker, and Serpent's Coil, who were some of the first people to leave consistent reviews, and comments on this story. I would like to offer extra special thanks to Linkmaste. Who not only has left a review on almost every chapter after 23 or so, but also did an amazing job in drawing a fantastic cover for this story. Not to mention has been a very good friend over the past couple of years. Link also has their own digimon story that she's working on right now, called Digimon Tamers Unity. Its a bit rough around the edges, but highly recommended.

I'd also of course like to give thanks to our newest followers/favoriters, DiCuore Aliss, Jalun Baird, and EH-01! As well as all of the other amazing people who have followed, and favorited this story over the past few years.
