Taming the Skylark (A Katekyo Hitman Reborn fanfiction)

Standard disclaimers apply. I do not own Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Amano Akira-sensei does; though, of course, the OC is mine.

Three days later, Hibari was discharged from the hospital. Despite the doctor advising him to stay in bed for at least another day, he refused and returned to school the next morning.

"Welcome back, Kyo-san," greeted Kusakabe from the school gates.

Hibari momentarily stopped in his tracks to acknowledge the presence of his right-hand man. "How did it go?" he asked before continuing inside the grounds.

"Everything is well again," narrated Kusakabe as he followed him. "The council members have reflected on their actions and are performing their duties diligently. The president is now less overworked."

Hibari breathed out derisively. "The last one is unnecessary."

"Kyo-san." Kusakabe pushed a notebook to his direction. "She asked me to give this to you."

It did not take Hibari long to recognize what was being handed to him. Serving as the head disciplinary officer for years, he could identify a school roster the moment his eyes landed on it.

Upon opening the notebook, he found a letter inside. The contents made his eyes widen slightly.

"I, Senritsu Nanami, relinquish my position to a fellow committee member, Hibari Kyoya, hereby naming him as the new disciplinary committee chairman."

At the end was her signature, along with the signed approval from other committee head officers.

"Congratulations on your promotion, chairman." His last word helped the realization sink in.

A smirk appeared on Hibari's face. It had been a while since he felt that satisfied. "Let's go. A lot of work needs to be done."

With the sleeves of his gakuran fluttering in the wind, Hibari Kyoya strode towards the school building.

The Demon Prefect of Namimori was back.

Hibari was tending to the papers on his desk when a sudden knock broke his focus. Before he could answer, the door had already slid open, revealing a familiar brunette who was smiling from ear to ear.

"Enjoying your first day, committee chairman?" asked Nanami as she watched the skylark from the doorway.

"Why are you here?"

As expected, her presence was not a welcomed one. Though, a small change in his behavior caught her attention. He was not frowning at her unlike before.

Getting this position really made him happy, huh? she snickered inwardly. Raising a hand that held a stack of papers, she walked towards him. "Delivery."

On her way, Nanami noticed a couch. She turned to Kusakabe after giving Hibari the papers. "Since when did we have a couch in this room?"

"Right after receiving the promotion notice, I had it delivered here," Kusakabe explained in the middle of cleaning the shelves.

The brunette sat on the sofa and a light chuckle escaped her lips when she felt herself bounce on the furniture. "This feels nice! I can sleep here sometimes."

"This room does not belong to you anymore, former head disciplinary officer." Hibari was quick to shut her down but Nanami was not one to relent.

She gave him a sarcastic smile. "I can always take it back, current head disciplinary officer who was only promoted by yours truly."

Tension rose inside the room. Kusakabe watched them as he readied himself to clean whatever mess would be left behind their battle.

Hibari hummed dangerously, "Oh? Try me."

She gave him a look of disbelief. "Is me sleeping in this room really worth that much of a fuss? How stingy are you?"

"I hate people crowding in my own space."

The brunette could have easily retorted, "This is the disciplinary office, not your personal lounge," but decided against it. Why bother when she could always sneak in anyway? Her talent for espionage was not just for show.

She swiftly changed the topic, "I'll wait for you to finish so I can send the document to the other committees."

"No need," Hibari settled back in his seat. "I have Kusakabe to bring it to them."

"Yes, president. Leave it to—" Suddenly, Kusakabe froze in place.

Nanami looked over her shoulder and found him rummaging his pockets. He brought out his phone and ran to the door. "Chairman, I received a report that a student accidentally removed the wig of the principal. I will check it out right away!"

He rushed out of the room, leaving the two alone.

"The principal is wearing a wig?" Nanami mumbled, clearly dumbfounded. She reached for her own phone and quickly wrote in a text, "Make sure to take a good picture, Kusakabe."

Hibari only sighed at the commotion and returned to his work.

Unbeknownst to them, it was all a lie. Kusakabe simply wanted them to spend time together. Alone and unbothered.

After hitting the send button, Nanami leaned back on the sofa and glanced at the skylark. "I can wait for you so don't rush yourself."

With eyes still on his papers, he muttered, "You seem to have a lot of time in your hands."

"Yeah, thanks to you."

His pen stopped moving. "What do you mean?"

"I heard that you gave the other council members a good scolding. Because of that, they realized their faults and changed for the better."

Indeed, after she returned, Nanami no longer did everything by herself as the council started to work as a whole. Her duties also lessened after she gave Hibari the position of the head disciplinary officer. As a result, she gained more time for herself.

"I did that for Namimori High," he bluntly answered.

"I know. That's why I promoted you."

Surprised at her unexpected reply, his eyes widened slightly. He had been wondering what crossed her mind when she decided to promote him. His best guess was that she did it to make him stop bothering her. Never did he expect that she had actually done it in recognition of his efforts.

"Still, that doesn't change the fact that you helped me in the process," Nanami gave him her most sincere smile. "Thank you."

Hibari continued to stare at her in complete silence. Confused at his reaction, she blinked, and he snapped out of his trance.

He averted his attention back to the desk as if nothing happened. "I'll be done soon. Be silent and wait there."

"Okay."

Soon, he was finished and Nanami stood in front of him.

"Good work." As she took the papers from his hands, her gaze wandered to his left arm that she had previously injured. Relief washed over her as she watched him move it normally again.

"What is it?" he asked and she quickly looked away.

"Nothing," she turned around and waved him goodbye. "Then, see you tomorrow."

After that day, Nanami could often be seen hanging around the disciplinary office. Since no one else was brave enough to deliver documents to the newly-appointed committee chairman, she took on the job as it would also allow her to constantly check on him.

"Why does something always happen when I come over?" She frowned after Kusakabe had once again left the room in a rush.

"Who knows." Unaffected, Hibari continued reading the papers in his hands.

Weird enough, he no longer found her presence irritating. He could even stay focused at work despite her being in close proximity. It was as if she would disappear in thin air and only come back when there was something to tell him.

"Senritsu!" A loud clatter was heard from the doorway and Sasagawa Ryohei came marching inside the room. "There you are! Listen—"

"Get out." Hibari shot him a warning glare.

"Ou, Hibari! Hello!" Ryohei waved at him before sitting beside Nanami on the couch. "Do you remember what we talked about before?"

The skylark left his seat with tonfas already in hand. "You have the nerve to ignore me."

"Wait, Hibari! This is an extremely important matter!" He raised his arms defensively. "It involves the student council!"

His words made Hibari stop in his tracks. Nanami arched an eyebrow. "It does?"

"Did they do something again?" Hibari asked, threatening the brunette to spill the beans with a glare.

She shook her head. "I don't think so."

"Kurokawa is your secretary, right?" added Ryohei. "It goes to say that this matter involves the student council!"

Nanami could see where the conversation was heading. She sighed. "Sasagawa, let's talk about this outside."

However, they were stopped before they could reach the door. Hibari watched them with narrowed eyes. "You two. Are you hiding something?"

"No."

"Kind of!"

Nanami turned to Ryohei with a look of disbelief. She whispered scoldingly, "Hey! Stop making things complicated."

The two were forced back to the couch with Hibari observing them like kids under detention.

"Talk."

She directly met his gaze. "Trust me, you're not going to enjoy this."

"That's not for you to decide." Hibari was guessing that one of the council members had violated the school rules again. If that was truly the case, it was only right that he saw them punished accordingly.

Releasing another sigh, Nanami turned to face Ryohei.

"Senritsu," he spoke, the uncharacteristic seriousness in his voice even stunned Hibari. He took in a deep breath.

"I want to ask Kurokawa out on a date."

A deafening silence fell upon them.

The brunette glanced at Hibari who, as if sensing her stare, slowly turned to exchange looks with her. She whispered, "I told you."

Immediately after, the two were thrown out of the room.

Nanami and Ryohei moved to the school garden to continue their love consultation.

After listening to him and giving him advice, she heard him exhale loudly. "What a shame! I wanted Hibari to listen too. I was sure he could give me an extreme advice!"

She resisted the urge to snort indignantly. "In what universe are you living to think that he would ever give you a love advice?"

"But he has a girlfriend right now!"

Nanami turned to him in surprise. "What, really?"

"Yeah, you."

The two stared at each other in complete silence. She frowned. "No, I'm not. Are you joking?"

"Of course not!" Laughing, he playfully slapped her back. "It's no use keeping it a secret, Senritsu! The entire school extremely knows!"

"WHAT?!" Nanami sprang up from the bench, surprising Ryohei. "We're not dating! Where did that come from?!"

"Everyone is talking about it. You even went to the Himalayas together!"

"We went to Italy!"

The brunette almost immediately scolded herself for that slip of the tongue. However, before she could correct herself, her white-haired friend hollered, "Isn't that known as the City of Love? Nice going, Hibari!"

"That's Paris. Italy is a country," she retorted. "Anyway, is it true that everyone knows about it?"

"Yeah, to the extreme!"

Nanami could already feel a headache coming. "Sasagawa, Hibari and I are not dating. We're just—"

Friends? Not really. After thinking about it, she decided to go with, "Acquaintances. We're individuals working together to make the school a better place for everyone."

Soon, the two parted ways. Nanami breathed out a heavy sigh as she watched Ryohei jog back to the direction of the gymnasium.

"Well then," she muttered while massaging her aching temples. "How should I handle that rumor?"
