Day forty-five:

Finally, after nearly two months since this fiasco had started, me and Sebastian return home to the manor. I still had a minor fever and Sebastian was still not up to par, but I couldn't stand another day away from home. The ride home was peaceful for the most part, with Sebastian sleeping through it. He's still getting used to having fatigue and needing to sleep. Last night I caught him trying to stay up all night despite looking like he was about to collapse. It must be hard for him to accept this change in him. He probably thinks that it makes him weak. It's just something we'll have to adapt to. It'll be hard, but then again, we've dealt with worse.

When we open the door to the manor, my workers nearly tackled us to the ground. Needless to say, they were happy to see us. They bombarded us with questions like "what took you guys so long?", "where have you two been?", "why is Sebastian still sick?", "did you meet the rowdy cowboy?" Of course, Sebastian and I had a cover story prepared for this: While in the city, there was a murder case that required our assistance. The serial killer was hard to find and for weeks we searched until we caught him. He kidnapped me and tried to escape, however Sebastian was able to tackle us into a river, which is why we're sick. And no Finny, during that time we did not see the rowdy cowboy. It was a weak story, but they bought it anyways. The manor was surprisingly well-kept, nothing seemed out of place or broken or dirty. I was almost impressed, until Tanaka told me exactly how much of the manor was replaced. I should've known…

Lizzy was informed of my trip, and, thankfully, has agreed to wait until next week to visit. The queen had sent me a letter to investigate the strange cases of villagers getting healed in a small town. It's almost funny that I solved that mystery without knowing. Raj and Aji also wrote me a letter, about a festival coming to England and insisting that I take them there. I swear, that guy thinks I have nothing to do. But after the hell I went through with Sebastian, a festival should be nice.

"Young master."

"Come in, Sebastian," Ciel said, closing his notebook. His butler entered the room, a tray in his hands.

"Thought you would like something sweet before bed," he said, presenting a plate of strawberry cream cheese, chocolate cherry, and apple cinnamon pastries.

"Is there a reason you're indulging my sweet tooth?" Ciel asked, raising his eyebrow.

"I wanted to properly thank you for everything that happened."

"By giving me cavities?" He reached out to take one of the danishes.

"You deserve it."

"I do. You have got to be the worst patient I ever had to deal with."

"And yet, you stayed."

"Simply because making another contract with a demon would be a pain." He took a bite of the pastry, the warmth and cinnamon melting in his mouth. Not that he would dare praise the butler.

Sebastian was about to remark when a yawn escaped his lips.

"Someone's tired."

"Forgive me, this takes some getting used to."

"I know," the boy said gently.

"At least I don't have to sleep as long as humans do, a couple hours is all I'll need."

"Still, if you ever need more sleep, don't hesitate to do so."

"I'm still getting used to your caring side," he said, causing Ciel to turn red.

"I just don't want and incapable butler! The others are already hopeless I don't need one more disaster!"

"Of course, I-" he paused, eyeing the book the young master had on his nightstand, "you kept the medical book Undertaker gave you?"

"Well, I want to be prepared in case something else happens. Like he said, you'll be prone to falling ill now that your immune system is weakened."

"Yes, it would be wise to hold onto that," his voice said somberly.

"Sebastian-"

"Shall I get you anything else before you retire for the night?"

"No, that'll be all," Ciel sighed as Sebastian retreated out the room. His eyes turned to the medical book on the nightstand. It was no different from a human's book. I guess that's what getting to him the most. Accepting his mortality, his weaknesses. A powerful demon reduced by his limitations, or so he thinks. What will it take to make him realize he's not weak? I still see him as the demon he is. I wonder what's he doing now. Probably forcing himself to stay awake, or testing his powers to see if they're still as strong as they were. Why Sebastian? Why beat yourself over this? Why push yourself over your limits? Are you trying to hurt yourself? After we finally got over this? No, I won't allow this! I won't! I-

"Sebastian!"

"Yes, my lord?"

"Don't!"

"Don't what?" he asked, confused.

"Don't…...don't go. The nightmares, they came back," he lied, "stay here, until I fall asleep."

"Young master, I doubt I'll be of any comfort. I might accidentally fall asleep myself."

"I don't care. Stay."

"As you wish," Sebastian said, taking a seat near the bed.

They waited in silence. Sebastian waiting for him to fall asleep and Ciel laying in bed with his eyes closed, hoping the butler will doze off before he does. After a few minutes, Sebastian sighed.

"You don't have any nightmares, there's no point amusing me by pretending you do."

Damn, can't fool him.

"You think I'm so insecure about myself that you have to go out of your way to make me feel significant. I don't need your pity."

"Then what were you doing before I called you?"

"I was in my quarters."

"Doing what? Pinching yourself awake? Trying to prove to yourself you're still a demon? I didn't call you out of pity. I don't trust you alone with your damn pride. You'll just hurting yourself over something that doesn't matter. You have always been an unstoppable force that can't be defeated. Needing to sleep every once in awhile won't ever change that!"

"It's not just that. What if something were to happen to you while I sleep? You said so yourself, it's quite difficult to wake me up."

"It's not impossible. If i was in danger, you would sense it."

"Say I do sense your danger and come to your rescue. If it was your regular kidnappers and gangsters, I can take them down no problem. But what if it was a shinigami? Or someone from the underworld? If I get hurt, I won't be able to walk it off. I'm not as I used to be."

"Used to be? You still are! You're still my butler. We still have a contract and we will follow through to it. You still have your powers, that much hasn't changed. Whatever happens, we'll make it through and succeed. I won't allow you to fail."

"It's not that simpl-"

"Of course it is! I order you not to fail me! I order you to protect me and fight those that come our way! And we will succeed, because you haven't disobeyed me yet! And I know you won't. Because of our promise."

The butler watched Ciel rant, stunned by his words.

"So, please, just stay here. It'll put my mind at ease if I know you're here, in case- no, when I need you. Because only you can help me obtain what I desire."

"..."

"What?"

"...did you just say please?"

"Shut up!"

"Sorry, I just…." Sebastian said between laughs, "sure, young master, I'll stay with you."

And he did. And just as he warned, Sebastian dozed off before Ciel did. But he didn't care, as he watched the butler with his head lolled to the side and shoulders slouched. The boy pushed off the covers, grabbing one of them and carrying it to where Sebastian was, tucking the sleeping figure with it and wiping the bit of drool that dripped onto his uniform. He returned to his bed, picking up the journal he was writing in.

So much has hanged in so little time. I thought this was something Sebastian could get over. No one could get over that so easily, but I know he soon will. He's stronger than this. Things won't ever be the same, but nothing ever does stay that way. We'll be okay.
