***Authors Note: I am a terrible human being and I whole heartedly apologize to everyone that has given such inspiring and fantastic feedback on this story. I'm not going to lie I lost my flash drive during finals week last semester at college which contained the whole completed story and the beginning of a sequel as well as an Avengers story I was preparing to post, which led to me losing my motivation. However, with all the hype surrounding Scorch Trials release I decided to get my Klunk together and continue the story. I am in the process of rewriting the rest of the story so please bear with me. My memory can be kind of rough and I promise I am trying! I'm saying this to partially explain the three week time in the next chapter, so be prepared! Thank you again for reading and sticking with me!
"Minho! Leave!" I yelled at him. "Gally! Make him leave please!" I groaned and pouted.
"No Gally don't." Minho answered looking at the boy. "I just got done organizing all the maps from the runners today. I'm disgusting and tired. And I am going to shower." Then he casually strode through giving me a cheeky grin. However, despite his obvious attempt to cover it, I noticed a slight limp. He was carefully placing his left foot on the ground as he went. I said nothing about it though and neither did Gally, if he even noticed that is. Minho picked a stall one away from mine, giving me some space but not enough to make me really feel comfortable.
"He's got a point Dani. He does have to get up in a few hours to go out and run again. I think he deserves a shower too." Gally shrugged but gave me a small smile, and began to turn away and leave.
"Wait! Where are you going?" I yelled after him.
"Bed. I think you're in good hands now." I heard Gally shout back as he left.
"Gally! Come back!" I shouted. The boy didn't return so I growled out "He's such a-a stupid shank piece of klunk!" I stomped my foot on the ground and turned back to look at Minho. He was smirking with one eye brow raised.
"You kiss your mother with that mouth Dani?" he questioned putting his towel over the side of his stall. I rolled my eyes at him and stepped back under the water trying to ignore him, my arms still wrapped tightly over my chest. I couldn't believe how casual he was being right now!
"You're hilarious Minho." I stated with no emotion. Minho laughed a little before grabbing the back collar of his shirt and pulling it over his head. My eyes drifted down his sculpted torso taking in every inch before I even had noticed what I was doing. I quickly looked back up at his eyes only to be met with another cocky grin.
"Anything I can help you with Princess?" Minho questioned as he started to unbutton his pants. My eyes got huge. I could feel heat immediately rush to my face and I tried to hide the obvious red tint by turning into the water. My stomach turned slightly and I started to feel a bit giddy. How stupid I must seem. I mean its Minho I'm with. I heard his water turn on in the stall one down from me. "So how was your day Dani?" he asked.
"Fine." I stated.
"I see you managed to befriend Gally, that's quite an accomplishment. It kind of makes sense though," he chuckled a little, "one princess getting along with another. Whatever makes the two of you tolerable I guess…" I knew he was joking, but I didn't feel like he deserved a sarcastic response from me right now.
"Well did you help anyone today at least?" he asked.
"No." I replied quickly.
"Nobody needed you all day? Really. Didn't someone get hurt?" Minho continued.
"Nope." I said to him still refusing to look at him. I heard Minho grumble a little.
"Okay then," Minho grunted clearly annoyed with me, "excuse me for trying to make conversation." I rolled my eyes and finished making sure all the soap was washed off my hair before I turned my water off. I quickly grabbed my towel and wrapped it around myself before sending a side glance to Minho. Minho was rubbing soap out of his hair with his eyes closed.
"Well excuse me for being uncomfortable in the same room as a strange boy that I just met, after he came in while I was trying to shower! Naked!" I glared back at him.
"I don't think I'm that strange Dani. And that is a bit unfair. It's everyone's shower not just yours. Your body guard can't stop everything." He spoke back calmly only making me angrier.
"Minho! I'm naked! Seriously!" I stomped my foot.
"Actually you have a towel on, I'm the one who's completely nude. Sooo shouldn't I be the one who's uncomfortable?" He winked at me. I growled shrinking behind the stall door. I didn't want to move, I was angry and frustrated with him so instead of saying something back I would regret I bit my lip and stared at the ground. Minho just rolled his eyes at me and leaned against his stall door. "Seriously Dani all jokes aside, I know you haven't known me for long but if you think I would be anything but respectful to you, you're insane. I would never ever do anything. You're a pretty, nice independent girl. You can hold your own and I think that is awesome. You're strong and fast and I- I think you could be key to us finding a way out of here. " Minho added rambling a bit. My head shot back up. He said I was pretty, I squealed a bit internally.
"Thank you…" I gave him a small smile. Minho nodded in response still seeming a bit irritated with me. "….How was your day…" I spoke softly. Minho glanced at me, a little surprised.
"Sorry what was that? I couldn't hear you?" Minho gave me a small smirk. I groaned audibly and repeated in a monotone voice.
"How was your day?" I said a little louder. "Did you find anything?" Minho shook his head.
"Not a thing. Just a typical day." He spoke sounding a bit sad.
"So what exactly do you guys do? I mean I know you run the maze. Do you just look for patterns or clues or what?" I asked again looking towards the ground. I didn't want him to think I was being too nosy, seeing how things were pretty hush hush right now, but I was honestly interested.
"Yeah kind of. Everyone is assigned a section. If they find anything or think anything is different they report back to the Glade immediately. You run your section, memorize the route you take, get back before dark and then write down everything you remember. "Minho explained.
"So you're trying to make a map of the maze then?" I questioned.
"Yeah." Minho replied.
"And after all this time… you haven't found anything?" I asked stepping out of the stall. Minho stopped washing and glanced back at me.
"Well I did find you." He gave me a genuine smile. I shook my head and tried to ignore how badly I wanted to see the water dripping down his muscular body right now. I hesitated, did I really just think about that? I fixed my eyes on the ground. "But it's really not that simple. The maze changes every night. You can hear the walls shifting and moving if it's quiet enough." I walked over to the opposite stall where I had hung my clothes over the edge. I had also taken a fresh wrap from the med hut for the wound on my side. I grabbed wrap, turning back towards Minho, meeting his dark eyes. My hand tightened around the towel.
"Do you mind?" I shrugged a little. Minho turned back to the water with no resistance, which was surprising a little but a relief. I knew I should trust him, but I mean he's a guy right? After carefully redoing my wrap I began to change quickly, wrapping my wet hair in the towel. "So has anyone ever…tried to stay out there and watch how it all works?" I asked. "I mean I know the Grievers-"
"You know about Grievers already?" Minho almost shouted. "Do they keep anything a secret anymore? First girl in the Glade and you're already getting special treatment!"
"Well I am a med jack Minho." I laughed a little at him. "I put giant killer monsters on the top of the things to tell the med jacks about."
"Sure. Right. Well we can't. You know no one is allowed in the maze after dark. They… they did try it once. Early on, when they first got here. But… no one survives a night in the maze." Minho added solemnly. "We actually use it as the ultimate punishment… if anyone gets in trouble, like they do something really twisted the shank will get banished into the maze right before the doors close. No one has ever made it back."
"That's kind of messed up." I added. It was sad and kind of scary thinking about the maze at night. The people who get stuck out there knowing there fate…
"Yeah well, rules are rules. We have to keep order in the glade in order to survive." Minho said turning off the water. "And if you stay this nosy you may end up with the rest of them." he added sarcastically.
"Not funny." I glared at him. He still was facing the wall, making sure to advert his eyes politely. "So since you started to explore the maze you still haven't found a pattern or anything then." I finished dressing walked a bit closer to his stall. He just shook his head turning towards me cautiously to make sure I was clothed.
"The maze. It's massive. There is the inner ring of it with the giant walls, like where I found you. But there is also the outer-"Minho froze, looking directly into my eyes. "I shouldn't be telling you this. I shouldn't be saying any of this." His face got hard. He grabbed his towel and tied it around his waist tightly.
"I'm sorry Minho, I didn't mean to anger you…" I mumbled. I honestly was getting excited he was giving me all this information.
"It's not your fault. I don't think… I don't know I just feel like I… I can talk to you." Minho muttered so quietly as he fiddled with his towel I almost missed it. I was taken aback. Did Minho really just say something kind of sweet like that? My mouth hung wide open.
"That means a lot to me Minho really. I feel the same way." I felt some weight off my shoulders. Both Minho and Gally are opening up to me? If anything I knew I had Minho and Newt on my side, and maybe Gally. I debated on if I wanted to mention my interest in being a runner. I mean he said I was strong and fast right? Minho stumbled out of the shower running his hand through his dark wet hair. His ankle was obviously bothering him and I couldn't ignore that anymore. "So since we can talk to each other how about you tell me what's wrong with your ankle then?" I added in as slyly as I could.
"Nothing really, just a small sprain. Nothing serious." Minho blew it off and grabbed his clothes. I moved to the door while trying to comb my hair out with my fingers as he changed.
"You know if a sprain goes untreated it can lead to serious injuries. You could damage the ankle more or end up messing up the other one from overcompensating for the injury." I listed off the possibilities and Minho started to chuckle. I sent him a glare.
"How do you do that?" Minho asks. "I swear you were like a doctor before all of this."
"I think I'm a little young to be a doctor….but I don't know it just comes to me. I was defiantly trained…" I trailed off looking towards the ground. The possibilities of my past are endless. "It's hard because there are so many things I don't know for sure…" I added. Minho stepped up behind me and put his hand on my shoulder turning me back slightly.
"Were all in the same boat Dani." Minho spoke softly and rubbed my shoulder, trying to comfort me. I bit my lip, trying to block out the feelings. Minho was right, there was nothing I could do about my memories right now. Now I need to focus on survival. Minho's hand moved down to my arm. I was hyperaware of his touch, feeling the heat of his skin on mine. Minho had changed into new pants and a light v neck shirt. Because he was wet it clung to his chest-wait what was I doing? Shuck, I was as bad as the boys… I took a deep breath.
"Minho I know for sure I came here for a reason. I came here to help the gladers. I can't help it, there's this overwhelming need for me to warn you of something but I can't remember. It's just frustrating." I grumbled, tears coming to my eyes as I spoke. Minho said nothing and moved his hand to my cheek. He tucked a few strands of wet hair behind my ear. I melted into his touch, needing his comfort.
"You will Dani, I promise you." Minho whispered to me dark eyes full of concern. My heart was pounding as I began to take in how close we were right now. Minho licked his lips slightly. I leaned forward a bit, unintentionally really. Was I about to kiss Minho? A loud grinding noise began outside making me jump, also ruining our moment. "The walls…." Minho sighed out and took a step away from me.
"Come on, lets go fix your ankle up." I nodded to the door. Minho followed me to the med hut and even was a well behaved patient. We never got as close as we did in the showers, but it honestly wasn't awkward. Minho just made me feel so comfortable. He also walked me back to the homestead, making me laugh along the way, which led to us waking up a few gladers. "Just be careful on your ankle tomorrow. Since you must go run…" I added crossing my arms, making sure he knew I was not okay with it.
"Will do princess. Make sure you are actually somewhat productive tomorrow. Maybe try and do something positive." Minho smirks back at me. He turned and began towards the wooded area.
"What are you doing?" I asked confused, he clearly wasn't headed to bed.
"I need to go over the maps at least one more time." Minho said over his shoulder and kept walking into the darkness. I watched him until he was out of sight before I went inside. My heart swelled a bit, thinking of how dedicated and strong Minho is. He's a good leader. A few boys were sleeping in the homestead so I tip toed through and went up the stairs as quietly as I could. Before I could even grab the handle to my door I heard a door down the hall creak open.
"Dani?" I heard Newt's voice call out as quietly as he could. I glanced down the stairs and motioned him to join me in my room. I shut the door behind us before turning back to the honey blonde. He had a tank on similar to the one he gave me and his hair was slightly disheveled. "I just wanted to check in and see how you were holding up. I know it can be hard here, especially since you're new-"Newt began but hesitated, "Did you shower?" he asked pointing to my wet hair.
"Uh yeah, Gally actually helped me. He acted as my body guard for a little while and then Minho came. And Gally left after that." I explained to him moving to sit down on my rickety bed.
"Minho…." Newt spoke softly raising his hand to his mouth," And Gally? Really, he did that for you?" Newt seemed as shocked as I had originally been.
"Yeah, we called a truce kind of. All though the shank did ditch me as soon as Minho showed up…" I added, still a little angered. But if Gally hadn't left Minho and I may never have had….whatever kind of moment we had. I could feel myself start to blush a bit just thinking about it.
"Well, yeah…. Good that. Alby was concerned about that so I guess I'll let him know you have it all figured out already." Newt said putting his hands in his short pockets. I nodded and bit my lip, realizing now would be a good time to tell Newt about the strange visions I had been having and how similar they were to what Gally had gone through…even that Gally had seen me….
"Newt, can I…" I tried to start but stuttered. I ran my hand through my still damp hair. Newt had an eyebrow raised, looking at me expectantly. Of course he knew something was wrong with me already. He found me for an explanation because I had been acting weird today. I just sighed and patted the bed next to me for Newt to sit down. Which he did, our shoulders touching slightly. "I know you know somethings up. And I trust you Newt and I know I can talk to you…." I said fiddling with my hands. "I know I need to tell Alby as well, but I just need to get this off my chest now. I promise I'll tell Alby tomorrow." I said looking up at him. Newt just nodded and put his hand on my knee gently.
"Talk to me Dani. Please." He said moving his thumb on my leg. His hands had rough callouses on them, much rougher than Minho's, and yet they had the same effect. My stomach flipped, chest tightening and I took another deep breath before closing my eyes.
"It started in the Maze when Minho and Ben found me…." I began explaining to Newt everything. Everything I could remember.
