10 days later…
Helia's POV:
I smiled as I caressed the raven haired toddler's forehead. After Petal's recovery, we had come back home. But…she left. My eyes shifted to the corner table, glaring at a piece of paper lying on it.
She left, even after I told her that I still loved her. Even after I told her that I'm ready to forget the past and move on. But she payed no heed to my feelings. Just after the week we arrived home, I found her letter on the table. It said that she's going back to where she came from, that she's not going to re-appear in my life ever again, that she's leaving behind our daughter with me. That she's leaving me behind. I sighed as my eyes started to get blurred because of tears. She moved on. I couldn't and probably never will. My heart started to ache with the same need. The need to see her again. It has barely been two weeks and I am back to being the heartbroken and shattered Helia that I had left behind in dust four years ago.
A sob escaped my lips. I looked back to see whether Petal had woken up because of the sudden sound. Thankfully she hadn't. I got up from the bed and rushed to the store room. My mind was blurred by my craving to see her again. I just couldn't think straight. Entering the tiny room, I climbed up the shelf and grabbed a certain cardboard box. Holding it carefully, I brought it down and keep it on the floor. Sitting besides the box, I started to rummage through the contents and soon found a black colored album. I was about to open it when I found a folded piece of paper in this mess. I took it out in curiosity and unfolded it. It said:
To Helia,
Helia please believe me when I say that I didn't cheat on you. I swear to my mother's soul I would never do such a thing. Mummy (A/n:For those who don't remember, Flora used to call Liliana 'mummy') herself brought me to Josh's apartment. I didn't come on my own. He forced himself on me. I swear I didn't do anything. This was all Mummy's plan. She wanted me out of your life. Please believe me Helia! I am innocent. Why would I do such a thing to you while I'm carrying your child?!
My eyes widened in shock. So this is what she wanted to tell me when I came back from my business trip? Holding myself together, I continued reading.
Yes Helia, I am pregnant with your child. I wanted to tell this to you after you come back. I am addressing this letter to you while I sit outside. Your mom kicked me out of the house, knowing very well about my condition. I don't know why she did this. But please Helia, believe me. Please come home soon and save me from this misery. I don't know where to go and what to do. I really love you, Helia. I have only loved you and no one else. Please come and save me.
From yours and only yours,
Flora.
Tears rolled down my eyes as everything that happened four years ago made sense. No, this can't be. I didn't do this to her. I've been blaming her about entire ordeal but all along, the real culprit was… my mom? My mom, the one I trusted the most in this world…she hated her so much? So much that she… no. Who am I to blame her? I didn't believe in Flora when I had to, I didn't protect when she needed protection from this world. I didn't trust on the love of my life. I couldn't protect her. I couldn't keep her safe. I kept on proclaiming to her how much I trusted her and loved her. And when she actually needed that love and trust, I failed. I choked out sobs as I grab my hair in frustration. I am a loser, a stupid loser who couldn't protect the person that mattered to him the most. I cried unabashedly to my heart's content as the night fell asleep.
Third person's POV:
Nioebe's house…
A certain brunette was munching on her food, while her mind was somewhere else.
"Flora, how's the pasta? Do you like it?" Nioebe asked the younger female. Flora mindlessly nodded. The older female frowned.
"Flora, I had told you this is going to be difficult. Are you sure you can do this? Staying away from your only child isn't an easy task." She said while holding Flora's hand.
"I just can't stop thinking about Petal. While I was there, I used to do all things for her like brushing her teeth, bathing her. She hasn't ever stayed away from me. I can't help but worry about her." Flora said in a worried tone. All of a sudden, Aisha's younger sister, Faye entered the room.
"Flora, Helia has come here and he's asking for you." She said. Flora's eyes widened in shock.
"Helia's here?" Flora asked the younger female who in return nodded her head. Flora stood up and went towards the entrance of the house to see Helia standing outside the house.
"Why are you here?" Flora asked, not bothering to greet him.
"Petal is missing you. She has not eaten anything since you left." The raven haired male answered hesitantly, not daring to look into the female's eyes. His guilt didn't allow him to even look at her. He was too ashamed.
"She has not eaten anything since I left?" The brunette asked in shock and Helia nodded.
"You should've force-fed her! She's just a child. She's been hungry for a three days now." Flora said, worriedly. Helia remained silent.
"It's fine, you won't be able to that. I'll come with you." The female said. Helia nodded and made his way to his car as Flora followed him.
Helia's house…
Liliana was fixing things around the house so she decided to sort out the store room. She entered the room to see a mess of albums on the floor. She frowned in anger but it faded away as her eyes landed on a small piece of paper. She picked it up and read it. Her eyes widened in horror. 'This… this is the same letter Flora had wrote to Helia that night. Why is it here?' She thought as she ripped the letter into pieces. She stormed out of the room in anger but then she saw Sam passing by.
"Sam, do you know where Helia is?" Liliana asked, hoping that Helia wouldn't be the one that might have found out the letter.
"Yes ma'am. He went this morning to pick up Flora." The brown haired male replied. Liliana froze in shock. Her worst dreams had come true. He found out everything.
Helia entered the house and Flora followed him. Liliana rushed to the entrance to see both of them.
"You brought this cheater back home again. I don't understand you at times, Helia. After everything she has done to you, you still chose to believe her." Liliana fumed in anger. This act had become a part of herself. To lie to her own son, to behave as if Flora had really cheated. Deep down, she knew that she was the one guilty.
"Mom, it's about time you stop the act. I know everything now. You really think I am an idiot, right? Well, I guess I am. I can't believe you would do such a thing." Helia said, chuckling sarcastically.
"And I can't believe you, Helia! You believe her because of that letter, right? Those are all lies." Liliana said, making Helia roll his eyes in disbelief. "How can you think that I would do such a thing? You're doubting your own mother because of some girl who came into your life. I didn't raise to be what you are today. Are you really my son anymore?"
"I was, Mom. I always was that son who you raised. I blindly believed every single lie you uttered. I thought that my mother will always think the best for me. I never thought that my mother could lie to me. Even after I read that letter, I thought that probably you would yourself tell me everything. I still believed in you. But look, we're here. You're still not admitting that you basically kicked out my pregnant wife four years ago despite the fact that she was innocent. Why would you do that, Mom?" Helia shouted in anger. Liliana flinched at her son's anger.
"I was never in the favor of this marriage. Your father threatened me with divorce so I had to accept. I thought probably you'll yourself give her a divorce. But you ended up falling in love with her. So I had to take the matter in my own hands." Liliana confessed, not looking guilty in the least bit.
"And you created this entire drama to kick her out. Mom, did you ever realize how hurt I would be while you were planning to take her out of my life like this? Didn't you see my pain after she left? Mom, didn't you realize that you hurt me so much in this process?! I was not even alive these years! I used to wonder just why Flora would cheat on me. I died everyday, Mom. You killed me, Mom. You hurt me so much." Helia said as tears streamed down his eyes.
"Helia, I did this for your own good. I always wanted you to have the finer things in life. I-"
"You hated her, didn't you Mom? If you did hate her so much, you should've told me once. I would've left her. You know why? Because my Mom was much more important to me. Because your opinion mattered to me the most. But I don't think I ever mattered to you. I don't know if you ever considered my feelings. All that mattered to you was that perfect son you had raised." Helia said in a broken voice. He felt so unimportant and unloved in this moment. As if no one in this world was ever concerned with him. His own mother didn't love him.
"Helia, my son! Please don't think like that. I did this for your betterment." Liliana said, trying to hold Helia's hand but he yanked his arm from her grasp.
"You killed me, Mom. I never mattered to you, my feelings were never considered by you. What else can be more heartbreaking than this for me?! When Flora went away, you were by my side. But right now, who do I have with me? No one. I feel so helpless. But I guess I deserve this. After everything I have done, I deserve this punishment." Helia said, while wiping his tears away.
"But Flora never deserved any of this. This world has given her enough pain. She has gone through so much alone. Today, I promise in front of you, Mom. I promise her that I'm never going to leave her alone like that. That I'll always protect her." Helia said, looking at Flora. He held her hand. "I promise you that I'm never going to leave this hand."
And with that Helia took Flora into the house, leaving behind Liliana to reflect on her wrongdoings.
In the evening…
"I think we need to talk too." Helia said as they stood in the hallway. He had returned from office after work.
"Flora… I don't have anything to justify my actions. I have made a lot of mistakes that have in turn made you go through a lot of misery. I admit that." He said, as Flora averted her eyes from his gaze.
"Helia, you've proved me innocent today. I'm thankful for that. But… I can't bring myself to accept you again. How do I bring that Flora back again, the one who used to love you unconditionally?" Flora said, her eyes turning glassy.
"You don't need love me again, you don't need accept me again. I don't deserve your love. You can continue to hate me all your life." Helia replied.
"Helia, I don't know what to do. After all that has happened, I can't go back to being the same old Flora. We can't be what we were. These four years weren't just four years for me. They felt like decades and decades of shame, pain and misery."
"We don't need to be what we were, Flora. As I said, I don't deserve you after what I've done. Keep hating me. That'll at least reduce the shame and guilt in my heart." Helia said, smiling bitterly. "But Petal is our daughter. She doesn't just need a loving father but also a very caring mother. For Petal, please accept me in your life again."
"What sort of love was that, Helia? You loved me but didn't trust me when you had to. You left me alone when I needed you by my side. Why did you do this? Couldn't you trust me once? If you would've at least heard me out once, we wouldn't have been in this position. You don't even imagine the amount of heartbreak and pain I went through." Flora said as tears slithered down her cheeks. Helia's heart broke seeing her in this state, all because of him.
"I'm sorry for everything that happened. I'm sorry for all the most you had to go through. Take your anger out on me but please don't leave me. I'm your culprit, you should be angry with me. But please, stay with me. I don't want you to suffer alone. You've gone through enough." Helia said softly.
"I am tired, Helia. I am tired of fighting with this world alone. I'm tired of being alone, having no one to stand by me." Flora said as sobs escaped her mouth. Helia held her as she started to cry harder, as his own tears also started to fall.
"Flora, I promise I'll never leave you like that again. I'll always stand by you. Always." Helia said in a choked voice to hold in the sobs. Flora looked at him with mixed emotions in her eyes.
Suddenly a cloud thundered as the rain started to pour outside the window. They looked at the rainfall as they smiled in nostalgia.
Author's note:
Like Helia, I'm also your culprit. Hate me but don't leave me*sobbing like a donkey*
I am sorry, guys. I really am. You see, at some point, I thought that this story was trash. It made me so disgusted of my own writing skills. I recently gave my 10th board exams(Indians will know). Thus, this year was kinda hectic. During the last year, I became the epitome of procrastination. And since I didn't like this work of mine, I didn't write at all. Then I thought that I'm making you guys suffer because of my incapability to write. So, I thought, let's finish it off for my readers. Here we are. I honestly think this chapter was a little rushed but… yeah that's me being the shitty writer I am.
I got into this thing called K-pop so, that sort of added to the procrastination. Do you guys know about BTS? The seven Koreans who look like Greek gods but are actually geek gods? They ruined my grades, my schedule… also my life. But they are the best thing that has happened to me. You guys should check them out, if you're ready to get dragged into this black hole called K-pop.
Regardless, I thank you all for your patience. I respect you guys so much. Love you all!
Here ends 'He was my companion'. Hope you enjoyed it. BTW, since it's my vacations, I'm free so... Do you guys want some fluff chapters?
