"Danny….Oh Danny, where are you?"
The mist was everywhere, and Tucker tried to peer through it. However, it was too thick and he reached out, blindly trying to navigate through the fog.
"TUCKER! Help me! Why won't you help me? Find me, oh won't you find me?"
The moan wasn't a match for Danny's voice, but Tucker felt dismay course through him nevertheless. He was trying! Didn't Danny know that? By the gods, he was trying. But he had nothing to go on and… wait. Out of the fog, a mysterious figure appeared and it's green eyes glowed, cutting through the fog. Nearly formless, it headed towards the Duke, and Tucker felt a cold chill up his spine. He stared at the creature as it opened its mouth. However, no teeth were in the creature, and it simply breathed and stared. In some ways, Tucker was reminded of the Ancients, and then-
A hard shove from his bed made Tucker fall from bed. He opened his eyes, prepared to scream at whoever dared to do such a thing. He froze, however, as Danny stood in front of him.
A flicker from the figure made Tucker frown. No, it wasn't Danny. The ghost in front of the Duke-turned-King was fading in and out, and his ghostly tail was almost completely opaque. The figure opened its mouth and spoke, voice raspy and pleading.
"Tuckkkker…."
For a moment, it faded completely from sight, then reappeared, and seemed to have to focus to maintain visibility. Tucker wasn't sure what to think, until it mutated it's form into a much more Dannyish figure. It opened its mouth again, and the voice was a bit robotic, but recognizable to Tucker as his best friend.
"Tucker… Stranded in a different universe. Can't get out… powers wonky." The duplicate began shimmering in front of Tucker's eyes, trying to maintain its form long enough to finish what the original Danny had sent it to do, but it became clear that time was running out. It stuttered, continuing. "Safe… will keep trying. You will find me… in Arendelle."
Hours later, Tucker stood pacing in front of the Council, anger bubbling in his veins for the second time that week. His fist pounded onto the spherical table, the force making the oak shudder and the Council jumped.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN, 'NOT WORTH THE RISK'?!" the Regent seethed, and one of the members glanced to his brethren and spoke, his eyes cast down at his shaking hands.
"S..Sir. I have traveled many realms, and have not heard of Arendelle. You said this spirit did not resemble our King, why should we believe…?"
Tucker's voice grew thin as he completed the thought within the ghost's mind. "Believe a human? Might I remind you, your KING is half human. I might not have a foot in this world, and yet I have lived here and helped my King rule and am not going to stand by and let some frightened fools cower away from rescuing the best thing to happen to this land in centuries!"
Beyond infuriated, the Regent turned and tried to keep his head. "King Daniel and I are like brothers. I will find him, with or without your help. I have my own money and resources. I will not rest until the King has been returned home. If any of you think he is not worthy of being here, I suggest you abdicate your position on this Council. I will not allow you to hinder my plans. Dismissed."
He turned, heading down the hall and into Danny's office. He stood over the desk, trembling. He was trying so hard to not lose his temper, but he was so furious. He missed his best friend, and the kingdom was already beginning to suffer. He could feel it in the air. The panic in the air curled around him and he fought his instinct to run away.
Behind him, the door opened and a small hand clasped his shoulder after a moment. "Tucker." He reached for the hand, squeezing it while his one arm still gripped the desk hard enough for his knuckles to go white. Glancing back, he was met with soft green eyes that glowed. "I take it the meeting didn't go well... " Tucker snorted, his attention going back to the desk as he sunk into the chair and reached for blank papers, writing out names and theories on this world nobody had ever heard of. Behind him, Danielle was still talking, but he had blocked her out as his quill flew across the page. Then, a sharp tone, and he tuned back in just long enough to feel her grip both his shoulders and whirling him around to face her. Her green eyes burned into him, and even though tears streaked down her face she looked determined and strong. Just like Danny, Tucker thought. She searched his face and then leaned back, creating an ectoplasmic wall, reclining against as she crossed her arms. Sending a wry smile to her brother's best friend, she had one question with the impossible task.
"How can I help?"
Daniel stumbled as he kept pace with the Icemaster of Arendelle. A snow covered limb hit him in the face and as he blinked away the white stuff from his eyes, Kristoff laughed and helped him up.
"What are we doing here, anyway? Her Majesty creates ice, right?"
Kristoff grinned and nodded as he reshouldered his ice pick and jerked his head for them to continue, his boots making deep indents in the endless white blankets. "Yes, she does, but the people can't always access it. They still need ice for various things- keeping our butcher's shed's cool, and for physicians use, among other things. It still needs harvested, at any rate. Elsa's magic has made us the number one ice provider throughout the world, however. If she looks at a brick and summons fear, that ice won't break no matter how much heat there is. We've had to create new tools to break it, even. We trade ice to our southern allies that way."
Daniel thought of the tactical map he had seen while browsing the castle earlier. "Like the Southern Isles?"
Kristoff stiffened and he whirled around, the sharp anger in his eyes making Daniel step back. "They are NOT our allies!"
At Daniel's hasty nod, Kristoff sighed sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "One of their royals tried to kill my wife, back before she was my wife… for a while he was punished accordingly, but now Regent King Hans is next in line with his ailing father's health, and his twelve older brothers perished by… shall we say, mysterious circumstances? There are numerous reasons why we aren't allies, but those are the top two."
Daniel nodded, and then paused as they reached the mouth of a cave. Inside him, something burned, and he recoiled. Noticing this, Kristoff gave him a funny look, but Daniel shook his head, trying to not be a baby. He was a king, surely a little cave wouldn't get his ghost.
Following the Ice Master's lead, Daniel trapeased further into the cave, finding himself unsure of his footing the deeper they got into the icy structure. The air around them got thinner and colder, and soon their steps echoed among the stochastic drippings of water. The beauty wasn't lost on Daniel and he grinned as he watched Kristoff fiddle with a compass. Apparently, this Ice Master stuff was more of a science than he'd given Kristoff credit for. His humorous observations began to lose their potency on Daniel, though, when he noticed the burning in his chest was growing worse the longer they remained in the caves. Now paying more attention to his surroundings, he noticed small green rocks. The rocks seemed to have a supernatural glow, but it could have been the ice and water reflecting light. His unspoken question was answered as Kristoff took in the foreign king's face.
"Don't worry about that stuff mixed in with the rocks and ice. The green throws all first timers off, but don't worry. My people have been mining this cavern for generations, and nothing has ever happened. The green stuff is quite strange, however- it doesn't react to heat nor cold, and my pick barely penetrates it. Watch!"
He swung at the first green rock he saw and Daniel screamed as soon as it was fully unearthed. Falling to his knees, he was aware of Kristoff grabbing him by the shoulders and speaking, but the words were lost on Daniel as a world of pain ascended on him. He screamed again, and the force of it threw Kristoff back into a wall of ice. Somewhere in the haze of sharp, soul-tearing agony, Daniel was aware of the cave beginning to quake and tremble. Somehow, he found his feet as Kristoff looked up in horror. Rocks cased in ice were falling all around them. Daniel shoved himself forward, grabbing Kristoff and throwing them into a small cavity as a terrible rumble sounded and the world fell down around them.
It could have been mere minutes or hours later, when Daniel awoke. He opened his eyes, gasping in horror when he couldn't see. Quickly he phased, and as his ghostly gift of night vision kicked in, he glanced around for Kristoff. The cavity he'd haphazardly lunged towards was small, so it didn't take long before he spotted the man unconscious against the white stones. A long cut ran across his forehead, and Daniel growled as he tore a piece of his pants off and cleaned it up.
Ectoranium… in ARENDELLE, of all places…. How? I just don't understand…
Danny's thoughts cut off as his eyes grew in realization that he was now surrounded by the deadly chemical. It wouldn't kill him unless he was cut by it, but-
Danny opened his palm, trying to light up an ectoblast, wincing as the only result was a burning palm and tendrils of smoke emitting in a vain attempt.
So, no ghost powers. Now that he'd thought of it, he wasn't sure how he had phased at all. Shaking his head, he stood and stepped away from Kristoff, his hands tracing the large rocks that caved them in and slapped his palm against it, hoping maybe one power was stronger than the ectoranium. Nope. He growled. He couldn't phase, couldn't go invisible or intangible, and eventually he would need to breathe. Glancing at his unconscious companion, his only thought was This is very bad.
Back in the castle, Elsa paced nervously. Hours after she had watched Kristoff lead Daniel on an ice-finding adventure, Anna had gone into labor. She'd sent for Kristoff immediately, but her servants hadn't found him. It was nearing Anna's fourth hour of labor, and although Elsa knew the physician would take good care of her, the older sister was still beyond frantic.
"Your Majesty." One of her guards bowed before her, and Elsa nodded to him. He hesitated and then spoke. "While searching for the Consort, there was an avalanche… it is believed that he and the King of Phantoura were within the cave. We need more resources if we are to dig them out, my Queen. The cave-in was high on the mountain… the cave that went down was the one that tends to glow."
Elsa started, her blue eyes widening. Couldn't the men in her everyday life go one day without causing trouble?! She shook her head and waved him off. "Go, take what you need. Just bring him here fast, or Anna will kill him. As for me… I am going in to be with her. Do not disturb us unless it is news of Kristoff and King Daniel. Now hurry!" She dropped her cape of ice and as it dissolved into a small water puddle, she pushed the door open to Anna's chambers and didn't look back.
"D...D...Daniel? What happened? Where… we?" Kristoff's slurring questions brought Daniel to a standstill. He had been trying to remove some of the rocks, but it had only made the cave in worse. He turned and took a knee, grasping Kristoff's shoulder and keeping him still. His mind was spinning on how to cover up the fact he -and his Ghostly Wail- had caused the snowslide.
"The cave, it fell in. Bad luck, I suppose." His green eyes flickered with worry as he took in the true extent of Kristoff's injuries.
"Augh!" Kristoff groaned as he tried to stand, clutching his shoulder. "Must've dislocated it. Daniel… how are we going to get out? Anna's expecting me back for dinner tonight… it's our three year anniversary of meeting."
Daniel almost laughed at the trivial reason for getting out, but decided against it, instead answering the mountain man's question. "I'm not sure. I've been trying to dig us out for a while, and I only made it worse. And I have to be careful."
Kristoff tipped his head, wincing as it made everything blurry for a moment, then spoke. "Why?"
Daniel paused, then decided that this was an important detail, and sighed, leaning up against a wall of icy rock. "Remember my reaction to the green rocks which you said were harmless?" Kristoff nodded. "Well, I'm actually allergic to them. It's a rare disease in my kingdom, but those rocks can actually kill me if I get cut with them and it gets into my blood. So I have to really watch it. I'm weak around them regardless, and there's some side effects the longer I'm in here surrounded by them like this, but they're not lethal until I get cut."
Kristoff paled, leaping up and grabbing for the rocks blocking them in, groaning as he tried to move his injured shoulder. Daniel pursed his lip, clasping the blond's shoulder and halting him.
"Here. Let me fix your shoulder at least." Without waiting for a reply, he grabbed the man's arm and met the blue eyes. "Deep breath now." As the hitch of air hit Daniel's ears, he popped the shoulder back into place and then ripped his cloak and tunic off, wrapping Kristoff's shoulder tightly against his body.
"I'm no psychian, but that should keep it secure until we get back. Come on now. Let's figure these rocks out together."
Time meant nothing to them as they steadily made their way out of the cave. As they began to tire, however, they heard loud voices on the other side. Kristoff's eyes widened.
"Those are the guards! Hey, we're in here!" He slapped his good hand against a rock and then there was a loud chorus of yells on the other side.
A voice ghosted through the thick walls of ice, "Are you both alright? We will have you out of here shortly. The Queen and princess require you at home, Consort Kristoff. Your child comes!"
Kristoff went stock still for a moment and then he threw himself into the rocks, a frantic movement as he threw the rocks out of his way. Daniel paused for only a moment and then began helping with the same gusto. On the other side, the guards were doing much the same, and finally light began biting through the cavern Daniel and Kristoff were in.
The queen of Arendelle stood by Anna's bedside, smiling as she moved a piece of hair from her sisters face and looked on to the soft bundle her sister held.
"Oh, Anna. She's perfect. So beautiful, just like you."
Anna chuckled, tracing her newborn's face with her finger. "I can't believe Kristoff and I made this. She looks just like him, you know. I can't believe he missed it."
The sad tone in her voice made Elsa flinch as she recalled how she'd explained Kristoff away on Queen business for the last twelve hours, and as she opened her mouth to finally explain where Kristoff was, the door flung open and her brother in law stood there, panting and looking for all the world like he was near a collapse. Staggering in, he paused to kiss Anna's forehead and then sat on the edge of the bed as Elsa moved.
"How… are you feeling?"
Anna grinned widely as she snuggled against her true love. "A bit rough, but nothing a few days rest won't cure. See your pretty little daughter, Kristoff!"
She transferred the bundle of blankets and then paused as Kristoff winced when he moved a shoulder that was bound to him. Her blue eyes swept him up and down, noticing for the first time how bloody and dirty he was. He sent a smile her way before she even spoke.
"I'm alright. We had a cave come down on us and getting out was difficult." He looked down at his newborn with joy and wonder in his eyes, flitting his gaze to his wife. "What do we call her?"
Anna kissed him, eyes sparkling. "She's beautiful, don't you think? So, let's call her Skjønnhet. Joan, for short."
Elsa crossed the room laughing. Wasn't that the painting she and Anna had named when they were little? Anna sent her a playful grin and a wink.
So it was.
Before she could leave the room, Kristoff stopped her. The joy in his eyes was dimmed and he put a hand on her shoulder.
"You should go see Daniel. He's in the infirmary."
