Official Disclaimer

The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Chin Ho Kelly, Kono Kalakaua, Adam 'Toast' Charles, Governor Patricia Jameson and Detective Meka Hanamoa, do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.

The character of Detective Sergeant Danielle 'Danni' Williams probably can be considered to be mine by now. Although she was originally based on male Danny, she soon evolved becoming her own person. She has her own background, her own family, her own history and her own distinct personality. This isn't to say that the Danny Williams we all know and love is completely gone, he still emerges through her at times. I like to think of female Danni as what Danny could have been if everything in his life had gone his way. As in full custody of Grace and a decent relationship with his ex.

The character of Grace has also changed slightly due to the change in Danni. Her surname is Taylor as this is her father's surname and was Danni's married name (Danni reverted back to her maiden name when she was divorced). Her parents also are amicable which has also impacted Grace but never fear, she's still the sweetheart we know and love, if anything she's more a sweetheart now.

The character of Supervisory Special Agent Jack O'Connor, Detective Abraham Lee. Doctor Rosie Lange, Kent Deacon, Ross Hall, Sasha Hall, Nicole Hall, Brent Cox and Special Agent Walker Humphries however do belong to me as does any other character who you do not recognise from the show. Please do not use them, or my version of Danni and Grace without first asking for my permission to do so.

And here we go!

The last chapter is done and Burn is officially finished.

I would like to thank everyone who has read the story, commented about it, sent me Personal messages about it or just decided to favourite or follow it. It means the world to me that you would take the time to read this story especially when you consider what a niche market it is.

As I've mentioned before this is certainly not the last story in this saga, my goal has always been to rewrite as many of the episodes as I can, for as long as I can. Although I will be using the episodes the way the stories play out will be different, as you can see from 'Family' I merely take the very basic of the episode and switch it, the longer we go on the more unrecognisable the episodes will become to the point they will feel like new stories so hopefully you're all willing to stay with me for it.

I've really loved writing this story even though I did have a massive hiatus in the middle of it. I can promise that this won't happen in my other stories in this saga as I'm determined to get as many done as I can and I can't do that if I take big breaks for it.

Thank you to everyone who has given my own characters a go, hopefully I can convince you all even further that they belong on the team and that they all bring something interesting and unique to the stories!

Anyway, I guess there is nothing more for me to say other than I hope you enjoy this last chapter!

Chapter Eighteen

So, do I

Steve McGarrett's point of view

Steve headed out of the office, aware as he did of the feel of Danni's eyes burning into his back and moved down the corridor in the direction of the elevator, his palm already itching with the desire to make the man sitting down in their interrogation room waiting for them, suffer from every scratch and bruise that now adorned his partner's fair skin. Skin which clearly would show everything clearly on it

"Hey Boss, wait up will you" Kono called after him. He could hear her long stride behind him fixed in a brisk walk which from the sound of it, barely escaped being a run.

Steve stopped outside the elevator, hitting the call button and moved his head to the left just in time to see Kono to come to a stop beside him, a look on her face which look torn between excitement and trepidation. He knew that Danni had assumed that the trepidation from the rookie was down to who they were about to interrogate but Steve had the feeling that it was more because she had never seen him in the current mood he was in and was probably trying to work out in her mind what the best way of handling him was when he was in it.

The thought almost made him smile, it hadn't even been two weeks since the taskforce had been active and Steve was already used to the fact that Danni was able to take one searching glance at his face to know exactly how to handle them and their situation. He would have to remember that the rest of his team didn't have that talent or rather they didn't have it yet. He was positive that by the time Danni, Chin and Jack and finished training Kono she would have the same abilities which she needed to become an outstanding Detective.

One who was loyal to the taskforce.

He glanced up as the elevator doors slid open and they both stepped in, turning as one to dace the door while Kono reached out and pressed on the button for the basement. She leaned back as the door closed, rolling her shoulders as though she was trying to ease away some tension by loosening the muscles.

For a moment Steve thought about remaining silent but he could already picture the look that Danni would give him if she found out he had, it would be a look which told him without relying on words that he was Kono's boss so it was up to him to be the one to initiate the conversation between the two of them.

"How do you think we should handle this upcoming interrogation then Rookie?" He asked her, breaking the silence between them as the elevator began moving towards their destination. She looked over at him with a surprised look before she became thoughtful, clearly considering his question carefully.

"We should take it slowly I think, Barclay will think that he has the upper hand most likely because he hasn't realised yet that we have all his files so he may try and make a deal with us, asking for a knocked down sentence in jail in exchange for giving us more of his victim's names. When that doesn't work he'll probably try and exploit any weaknesses we have to provoke us into doing something which he can claim is police brutality." She told him, a confident tone to her voice which made Steve smile slightly in response.

There was no doubt about it that Kono was already taking Danni's lessons to heart.

"And what weaknesses are they?" He queried, glancing up towards the elevator's numbers just as it came to a stop, the doors sliding open, allowing them access to the hallway. They stepped out but Steve made no effort to move in the direction of the interrogation room, instead he merely crossed his arms and stared at the younger woman with a questioning look, making it clear that he was waiting for an answer from her. Kono remained silent for a moment, a look of confusion on her face as she looked between him and the empty hallway. "Look Kono, I'm not sure what kind of Boss you think I'm going to be but I can assure you thar I won't be the kind who will chew your head off or kick you to the kerb for voicing your honest opinion to me. If you have some ideas then I want to hear them. If I don't agree with you then I'll tell you, the same way that I'll tell you if it's a good idea. I've worked in the past with people who agreed with everything I said and while on one hand it was good given my line of work, I've also found out recently that maybe there's something to say about a team who can work together and challenge one another as well. Now what weaknesses do you think Barclay will try and exploit once we're in there to get the upper hand?"

"Well I think its all going to be based on what he's managed to see. Danni mentioned earlier that Barclay had admitted to her that he's been watching up, probably from the day that we picked up the cases so he probably saw us at the Hall scene. I would guess that he'll try and use Chin against me though I doubt he's aware of the fact we're cousins, he won't need to know that though because it's clear to anyone with eyes that we share a connection with one another. As for your weakness Boss." She heisted for a moment before setting her shoulders and continuing, her eyes coming up to meet his directly. "There's no doubt that Barclay will use Danni against you. If I was him and I wanted to throw you off balance then I would describe the fight that happened between then in as much detail as I could hoping it would make you lose it since it's pretty clear that you care for Danni and that she cares for you. He may leave Danni to last though and start with mentioning your Dad to you. His death was in all the local papers and Barclay no doubt saw it and easily put two and two together." She stated.

"That's what I thought as well." Steve agreed with a nod of his head. "Good analysis there Rookie, when we're in the room then let me do the talking and follow my lead." He informed her, waiting until she acknowledged the comment with a nod of her head before he headed down the corridor towards where two uniformed police officer stood guard outside of a metal door, giving Steve a sense of Déjà vu for a moment though he pushed the thought away. "We have it from here Gents." He told the two police officers who nodded at him and stepped away from the door. Steve caught them giving Kono a dirty look but he ignored it. Kono would have to learn to fight her own battles since her instant inclusion into the Governor's taskforce when she had still been a few days from her graduation from the Academy. Something which had ruffled more than a few feathers with her fellow officers. Steve tilted his head and looked at her. "You ready?" He asked her, smiling slightly when she nodded at him, a determined glint to her eyes.

"I'm more then ready for this boss." She assured her.

Steve nodded and stepped into the room, ignoring the chill that washed over him causing Goosebumps to erupt over his bare skin. The room was dark, lit only by the blue lights above them creating a heavy atmosphere. Steve almost smiled grimly at the combination. This has his partner written all over it. He waited until Kono closed the door behind them before he spoke.

"Terry Barclay." He remarked keeping his voice casual.

"Commander McGarrett" Barclay replied back from where he had been secured to the single chair situated in the middle of the room, his eyes flickering past Steve. "And Officer Kalakaua, what a pleasure to finally meet you face to face. I'm surprised you're here I would have thought that your Commander would have brought Kelly or Supervisory Special Agent O'Connor with him, he can't be taking this interview too seriously if he chosen to bring the Rookie with him." The red head stated, sounding amused before he turned his attention back to Steve. "And where exactly is Detective Williams? Is she in hospital being checked out? It's a shame that you chose to interrupt the two of us you did Commander, just when she was beginning to make such pretty sounds for me. If I had known what a thrill it was to have my victim fight back then I may have chosen to do things a bit differently. Oh well, that's a lesson I'll learn for nest time." He remarked with a simple shrug of his shoulders

"There won't be a next time Barclay." Steve informed him in a calm tone, disregarding the ball of anger growing in the put of his stomach at Barclay's casual mention of what he had done to Danni.

"How can you be so sure of that fact McGarrett, known of us know what could happen between now and the court case. I was a firefighter after all for many years, perhaps the pressure of the job merely got to me, triggering a bad case of PSTD. Considering what you've been through with your father I'm sure that you're well aware of all the symptoms. It causes you to react to things in a way you never would normally react. I was merely killing the people who lives in the houses to spare them all the agony of being burned alive. It was a mercy killing. I tried multiple times to stop myself, I wanted to stop but I couldn't. I'm sure my defence team can find several experts who would be willing to confirm that I have an undiagnosed PTSD and OCD condition which made it impossible for me to fight the urges." Barclay said with a sigh. "If it does get to trial then that is fine as I'm sure the jury will pity me not to mention that it means I'll be able to see Detective Williams again, the whole time I'll be imagining her helpless beneath me again and those pretty noises she made, maybe if I get out I'll go and see her again and relive it in person." He said, his eyes looking unfocused for a moment.

Steve gritted his teeth, letting the comment wash over him.

"We found your files which you had left in the house." Steve commented, watching as Barclay's eyes suddenly narrowed at him. "I should really thank you for how well organised you had kept them, it made it very easy to go through them. If you had been smart then you would have destroyed the files long before we turned up at your door with a warrant but I guess you needed something which you could return to, something which would allow you to relive all the crimes in your own mind."

"Unfortunately, you won't be able to prove any of that." Barclay said.

"I wouldn't be so sure about that, especially as it will help us prove that your so-called mercy killers were all pre mediated. You see for that defence to work the targets you chose would all have to be random, the people who were closest to you when those urges struck. The files we found prove that these weren't random acts. You chose the victims and then you proceeded to stalk them all for months at a time, befriending them in most cases to make it easier for you to get into their houses. Those aren't the actions of a sick man suffering from PTSD, they are the actions of a psychopath." Steve stated. "That is what the Jury will believe especially when the DA provided proof that you stalked them prior to murdering them. We also have your files for your intended victims in Chicago, again picking your victims before you have even left Hawaii does not show anything to back up your theory. All it does is highlight to the Jury that you had pre-planned every aspect of these crimes. There is nothing random about them."

Barclay remained quiet for a moment staring hard at Steve with a look of hatred in his eyes.

"I want my lawyer" The red head growled.

"Of course, you do and we would hate to deny you your rights to one." Steve remarked smoothly, turning and looking at Kono who was leaning against the side of the door, staring at Barclay with a look which would have made a lesser man pee his pants. "Officer Kalakaua, can you return upstairs and call Mr Barclay's lawyer and inform him that his presence is required here for his client"

"Of course, Commander." She said with a nod as she pushed herself off the wall and headed to the door, knocking on it twice and stepping out when the Officers outside opened the door for her. Steve waited until the door closed behind her before he turned back to focus on Barclay.

"Is this the part where you rough me up and demand that I never go near your partner again Commander." Barclay sneered at him.

"No" Steve replied. "This is where we simply wait for your Lawyer to arrive before we continue the interrogation."

"I saw your face when you came into my living room Commander, you were ready to kill me for just laying a hand on Detective Williams. I knew she was your weak point; it would have been so easy to get rid of you and your taskforce." Barclay told him as he leaned back against his chair.

"Oh?" Steve remarked, keeping his tone disinterested.

"Come now Commander it's obvious you already care for her." Barclay commented with a shrug. "I could see it from the way you interact with one another. You're clinging to her because of what happened to your Daddy. It seems to me that anyone who goes near you McGarrett ends up hurt. If I had killed her then you would have left Hawaii, without you there would be no taskforce and I would have been a hero."

"A hero." Steve said with a smirk. "Keep believing that. What you are Barclay is a child killer and we both know how the criminals in lock up feel about people who kill children? They don't like it and when they don't like something then they have no problem in letting that person know all about it. If you make it to trial then the rest of your life will be short and hellish and it would be nothing more then what you deserve and I'll be there every step of the way watching you." He promised before he turned and headed towards the door.

"We could always work out a deal Commander, I could give toy the name of more victims and who my accomplices were. There were more then just the Chens after all." Barclay called after him, an undercurrent of something akin to desperation in his voice.

"No deal, whatever you have to offer is something we already know or will be able to find out. There's no way of weaselling your way out of this." Steve replied, banging twice of the door and stepping through when it opened. He rolled his shoulders back once the door was closed and looked towards the two officers, speaking to them. "Turn the heating and the lighting up slightly. Hs lawyer is on the way and the last thing we want is for him to start crying out about police brutality and inhumane conditions."

"Yeah, of course Commander" The elder of the two said. Steve nodded at them both before he turned and headed down the corridor, bypassing the elevator and headed to the stairs. He took them two at a time, needing a release of tension. A long swim after work would help him work it off.

He pulled open the stairwell door on the third floor and headed down the corridor, pushing the door to their headquarters open and stepped into the air-conditioned room, his eyes moving around him taking everything in and his teams' positions. Jack and Toast were still at he computer table but this time Kono had joined them, standing beside Jack and talking to him, no doubt trying to find out from the initial arrest report who Barclay's lawyer was. Toast had all the files and was making his way through them steadily. Chin was still missing from the room while Danni was on the phone in her offer, typing at her keyboard as she spoke.

Steve watched her for a moment before he headed over to the computer table, his eyes flickering between the three of them.

"Report" He stated.

"We've literally just found out who Barclay has listed his lawyer as Boss" Kono announced. "I'm about to give him a call now and tell him that Barclay has requested him and where we are." She told him, taking the post it notes which Jack passed over to her before she moved away from them in the direction of her office.

"Kono filled me in on what happened down there when she ws in the room." Jack commented, looking up at him. "I'm going through the victims on the island and finding out where they worked and the places they tended to frequent. I'll contact the duty Judge and get warrants to go through the nearest CTV footage closest to the locations and see whether I can spot Barclay on there. It should be hard considering he's a tall redhead and they tend to stick out a bit more, especially in a place like Hawaii then they do elsewhere." He commented.

"That's a good idea, Barclay has already revealed his strategy, h's planning to go for the sympathy vote by saying he has an undiagnosed medical condition and that the murders he committed were merely mercy kills to spare the families of having to burn alive." Steve mentioned, smiling slightly at the loud snort that escaped Jack at the news.

"Good luck with that line of defence douchebag, I'll blow that theory out of the water when I show the Jury how he stalked his victims and interacted with them beforehand." Jack muttered, the comment causing Steve's smile to widen.

"Get on with that, ask Danni to call the on duty Judge before she leaves to pick up Grace. She managed to get those warrants for his residences earlier quickly so she clearly has a good working relationship with him. Until the rest of us manage to build up our own sources and connections then we'll have to rely heavily on Danni's and to a lesser extent Chin's since he's bound to still have some to get our requests expedited. We have to make sure that we do everything by the book for this case. I don't want him getting out, especially as he is fixed on finishing what he started with Sally Clements and with Danni." Steve told them, picking up on the concerned look which came to Jack's face at his comment. The tall blond looked past where he stood, his eyes focusing on Danni's office, staring at it for a moment before he met Steve's eyes again and nodded at him.

"He's not getting out McGarrett; we won't let him." The blond replied confidently. "You're right about the warrants though, I'll go and speak to Danni now and ask her to make that call. The sooner we have the them signed and faxed over to us, the sooner I can get to work on destroying his defence." He stated before he locked his computer and moved past Steve heading towards Danni's office.

Steve watched him for a moment before he focused on Toast, surprised that the younger man had remained quiet throughout the conversation.

"What about you Toast? Anything to report to me?" He asked, meeting Toast's eyes when the younger man finally looked up from what he was doing and nodded at him.

"Chin rang in earlier when you were downstairs and he says that he is on his way back here now. He would have been back here way soon but just as he and Detective Lee were leaving the first time around, one of the CSU members found some more files like the ones that Blondie found at his main residence. It looks like this guy has been doing this for longer then even we had thought." Toast remarked, sounding troubled by the news he was imparting. "Chin is going to bring the files back here with him so that I can start going through them but I'll have to finish the job off tomorrow because…" he hesitated for a moment, his shoulders hunching up as he continued to speak. "I have a rehab meeting tonight at seven and I can't miss going to it because… well you know why already Boss because you set the rules regarding it. I'll come in early tomorrow though around eight so I can get an early start on them."

"That's fine about waiting to do it until tomorrow Toast." Steve said with a nod at him. "What about the files we do have? Have you managed to find anything from them that we can use?"

"We found out this guy is prolific" Toast answered with a shake of his head. "I've counted at least ten potential victims from the Chicago area already and we're up to about thirty victims over the past fifteen years who have been killed in exactly the same way. It seems like when he realised that the police were onto him he quickened his pace, by the end he was killing like three families in a week and then he would suddenly disappear from the scene."

"And end up somewhere else." Steve finished for him.

"Exactly" Toast said, looking troubled for a moment. "I can do a nationwide search if you want to see whether there are any other victims who dies in the same way. We got most of the files but there's always the chance that he lost some. If I send it now then I should have some potential matches when I come in tomorrow? It's up to you though."

"Do it" Steve told him waiting until the other man nodded at him. "And Toast?" hr remarked, smiling slightly when Toast looked up at him. "That was a good idea, keep it up."

Toast looked startled for the moment before a wide grin crossed his face.

"You got it boss man." He stated before he turned his attention back to the computer.

"Ask Kono to help you build up the correct profile for it when you return." Steve commented.

"That's not a problem." Toast confirmed with another smile at him.

Steve shook his head, turning and heading across the area towards Danni's office, he glanced towards Kono when she came out of her office with a glance around her. He met her eyes when she looked in his direction, raising an eyebrow when she moved in his direction in an interception course to him.

"I got through to Barclay's lawyer and he's on his way over to him now. I rang down to security and told them to call me when he's arrived so I can take him down to Barclay." Kono told him.

"Good, until then I need you to help Toast build up a profile of the crime so he can send something out nationwide so we can see if there are any other victims who fit the way Barclay kills people. Show it to either Chin or to Danni if she is still here when the two of you finish it. If they are happy with the job you've done then send it." He instructed.

"That's fine Boss, I'll help him with it now." She said with a nod before she turned and jogged over to where Toast was clearly waiting for her. Steve watched them exchange a smile for a second before he turned and headed to Danni's door, pushing it open. He nodded at Jack when the other man stepped aside to let him pass before he spoke.

"Danni's just faxed off the warrants to the Judge and he's verbally agreed to it so I'll get started with the first victims." Jack remarked to him before he continued on his way. Steve waited until he was out of the room before he closed the door behind him and headed towards Danni's desk, taking the chair in front of it.

"How did the interrogation go with Barclay?" Danni asked him, her eyes never leaving her computer screen.

"He's too confident." Steve said with a shrug. "He's so convinced that his argument will sway the Jury that's he's happy to share it with anyone who would listen,"

"We'll just have to make sure that everything we do is above board." She said as she leaned back in her seat and looked at him closely, her eyes scanning his face. "Did you touch him?"

"Not a hair on his head Danni" Steve answered her. "The cameras were on the whole time and I sent Kono to call his lawyer the moment he asked for one and I stopped asking questions about the case as well when he did."

Danni searched his face for a moment longer before she smiled at him.

"Good" She stated. "How was Kono down there?"

"She was fine, she didn't say anything in there, she merely gave Barclay her best death glare which I have to admit was pretty impressive." He said with a slight laugh.

"I can well imagine, I've made arrangements with HPD for them to take him on today and place him in lockdown until he's transferred to prison, it be good if one of us can go as well with them just to make sure that everything happens smoothly. I was going to ask Chin if he would mind going." Danni told him.

"Sounds food, if he can't go with them then I'll go instead." Steve remarked, he leaned back in his chair, his eyes scanning her face. "How are you feeling now?" He asked, unable to keep the concern from his voice.

"I'm okay, my head feels tender at the moment bit Hazel tested me earlier and I didn't have a concussion so I should be fine, a good night sleep will sort me out. I'll have to assure Gracie that I'm okay, she always get concerned when I get hurt." Danni commented on a sigh as she shrugged.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there to stop it from happening in the first place." Steve said quietly. He looked up when he heard Danni came to her feet, watching as she moved around the desk and rested against it so she was beside him. She reached out, wrapping her small hand around the back of his neck and spoke while meeting his eyes.

"There will be several times that I will be hurt on the job, the same with the others as well. Its what the job entitles. I don't blame you for what happened to me because you made the right decision with leaving the residence to check out the other house. Life would be easy if we could look into the future but we can't. If you beat yourself up every time a member of the team gets injured then you're going to drive yourself insane and we need you functioning at full capacity so don't blame yourself okay. If anything, I should be thanking you for arriving when you did." She remarked, squeezing his neck with a smile before she lowered her hand. "I'm going to have to leave shortly so I should really carry on with my work." She told him as she came to her feet again, patting her hand against the stack of files which she was clearly working through.

"You want me to take some of them to go through?" He asked her as he came to his feet. Danni looked surprised by his offer before she shook her head at him.

"I appreciate the offer Steve but you're going to have to be focused on tying all the loose ends together, everyone will be asking you questions. I've done this so many time in the past that I know exactly what to say to them and what information they will need." She stated as she took her seat again.

Steve nodded at her, heading towards the doors and pulled it open before he came to a stop, looking out at his team before he turned back to Danni who was watching him with a questioning look.

"I think that we've got something good here Danni" He said, the comment clearly surprising her before she smiled softly at him.

"So, do I Steve, so do I."
