The following week saw a change in weather, and Anna felt it within herself too.
Everything seemed warmer.
She had just finished a few exams when she got the message from her mother.
"Anna, darling! I'll be in town with your brother this weekend! Let's catch up! I want to hear all about your studies!"
Anna, of course, wanted neither her mother nor her brother to visit, but unfortunately when Mrs Anderson had her mind set on something, it was pretty much guaranteed to happen.
Also, if Anna tried to convince her otherwise, it would just make her suspicious and more likely to hang around longer. By the time the weekend rolled around, she was at least mentally prepared
"Okay, Elsa, I'm going out for a bit," she said the day of her mother's arrival. "There's spaghetti in the cupboard. I'll be back soon, okay?"
"Okay Anna!" came the over-enthusiastic reply. Anna was shaking her head as she locked the door. At least this time, Elsa couldn't run away.
So off she went to the airport to pick her mother and brother up. Mrs Anderson swept Anna into a hug while Olaf didn't even glance at her. He was too invested in his Nintendo Switch to spare a look, though it didn't really surprise her. He wasn't the greatest with social interaction to begin with, and she didn't take offence.
"Let's go out for lunch," Mrs Anderson said. Anna was halfway to agreeing with her when she realised that it would probably be a really bad idea to leave Elsa alone for too long.
Regardless of any positive progress she seemed to have been making towards being a functioning human, Anna didn't really want to test the fates just yet.
So she bit her lip and said, "Sure! But how about we drop your bags off first. You can meet my, uh. Roommate. Elsa."
Mrs Anderson raised an eyebrow, but didn't comment. She merely nodded, picking up her bags before nudging Olaf to grab his.
The drive home took ten minutes. It took Anna another five to explain to her mother that Elsa was a little strange and energetic and she maybe didn't understand personal space the same way that other people Anna's age did.
Her mother just smiled and patted her cheek. "I raised you and Olaf, didn't I?" she asked. Touché.
So, they grabbed their bags and made their way up the stairs. They'd have to come and get them later, but the AirBnB wasn't available until later that afternoon. Time for a nice lunch and to catch up and then Anna could drop her mother off and come home and sleep. Or something.
Of course, it wasn't going to be that easy. Standing just outside her door, Anna could hear a faint noise coming from within. It didn't seem to be Elsa – it was too low and consistent to be anything natural. She opened the door slowly, calling out to her pet-cum-roommate.
"Elsa...?"
"Anna!"
There was a shattering screech before a large blur cam barrelling towards Anna. She had the presence of mind to drop her mother's bag – fotunate, because Elsa all but lunged at Anna, so desperate she was for some comfort.
"Elsa? What's wrong?" Anna asked, arms wrapped securely around her. She stepped into the room, still carrying Elsa, when she became aware of what the problem might actually be.
Unfortunately, so did her mother.
A bright purple vibrator, in the center of the room. It was on, the vibrations steadily moving it towards the door. Elsa pressed her face into Anna's throat.
"Snake! Snake!" she cried, squeezing tighter.
"We'll just wait out here, Anna," Mrs Anderson said, ushering Olaf back out. Kid still had his face in his game, thank god. Not that he'd even know what a vibrator was.
But her mother did.
God, this wasn't a 'meet the roommate'. In her mother's eyes, it was a 'meet the secret girlfriend who was so innocent she didn't know what a sex toy was'.
This was going to be an uncomfortable lunch.
