So, I've come to the end of this story. I realized that I could keep going with this - probably forever since I've fallen in love with Lily - but decided I need to bring it to a close. I may be enticed to write some follow ups (life with Lily?) but for now I'm going to give it a rest and finish some of my other stories that have been sitting for way too long.
Thank you to all of you who read - and especially those of you who have reviewed. It meant more than you know - and is what keeps me writing. So thank you!
"Uh Cho?" Jane stood in front of his desk, looking uncharacteristically nervous.
"Yeah?" the usually inscrutable looking agent glanced up from his paper work.
"I wanted to ask you a favor," Jane said diffidently.
"Okay." Cho sat back in his chair and looked at Jane. "What is it?"
"Uh – well – I wondered if you'd be my best man."
Cho blinked and stared for a second. "Teresa?"
"Of course."
"Okay then. Yes."
"Really? Thank you."
"You're welcome. When is it?"
"Next Saturday. It'll be small – an outdoor wedding with just a few guests."
"Okay – sounds good."
Jane nodded and turned away to walk back to his couch, thinking that had been easier than he'd expected.
"Jane," Cho called.
"Mmm hmm?" the consultant turned back.
"Friday night – bachelor party."
Jane grinned and nodded again. "Sounds good. The Rigsby's are coming so Wayne will be there."
Cho rolled his eyes. "Means I'll have to order more food."
Jane continued to grin as he made his way to his couch. He'd been a bit nervous about asking Cho and was both relieved – and if he was honest – touched that the man agreed so readily. Neither of them were the kind to wear their hearts on their sleeves, but he was pretty sure that Cho considered him a friend. He knew that he felt that way about the agent.
"Did you ask him?" Teresa said as she walked over to her desk from the kitchen.
"Mmm hmm. He said yes. He's throwing me a bachelor party on Friday night."
"That's nice," she smiled. "Although we'd better tell him that my brothers are going to be there."
"Oh dear," Jane answered. "Maybe we shouldn't tell them about the party."
"They'll find out, don't worry. I'll just warn them with death if they try and do something stupid."
Jane felt a brief moment of panic, sure that the Lisbon brothers would try something crazy. They were the kind to spike his drink with laxatives or try and get him drunk and leave him stranded somewhere, totally naked. But then he looked at Lisbon's face and knew that they valued their lives too much to try anything quite that serious. He'd just better be careful not to eat or drink anything that had been anywhere near the Lisbons.
Jane settled down on his couch, thinking about his upcoming wedding. He could still barely believe that Teresa – the woman with whom he'd worked for so many years – was about to become his wife. His wife! How was it possible that he had been given another chance to call a woman that. He certainly knew he didn't deserve it.
He was still somewhat surprised that he was able to think of her that way, as his wife, and not feel too much pain or guilt. He'd expected it – had expected to find it hard. Oh, it was true that he'd felt sad – but it had been a gentle sadness, tempered by time. He knew, in fact he was positive that Angela would want him to be happy, would want him to move on. And it wasn't as if he was forgetting her – she was part of him and always would be, just as Charlotte would be. But now he had a chance to live again – and he was going to grasp it firmly and not let go.
"Hey, what are you looking so serious for?" Teresa asked him a few minutes later. She was looking at him sternly, but he could see the concern in her eyes. He was pretty sure that Teresa would always worry about him although he was going to do everything in his power to make sure she knew that she had brought happiness back to his life.
"Nothing," he said, trying to sound innocent, although based on Teresa's raised eyebrow he hadn't been very successful.
"Really? Could have fooled me."
"Well, if you must know, I was just thinking about the fact that you're going to be my wife."
That instantly turned her eyes soft and misty. "Really?" she said again, but this time her voice was gentle. "And that makes you happy, I hope?"
"You'll never know how happy," he told her seriously.
"Damn," she said softly, causing him to look at her curiously.
"Uh -"
"It's just that you have to say sweet things like that when we're in the office and I can't show you how much they mean to me."
He grinned at that. "Later?"
"Oh yeah – you'd better believe it!"
Now he had two things to think about that made him pleased with the world. He saw Cho give him a disgusted look – and figured he must be looking particularly sappy right now. But he didn't care. He was getting married.
"I asked Dennis if we could have a few days off afterward," he told her later that day. They'd just put Lily down to sleep for the night and were relaxing on the couch.
"For what?"
"Teresa! For our honeymoon, of course. We are getting married you know."
"Of course I know that Jane," she told him. "But we've already taken a lot of time off."
"He knows how valuable we both are to the team and you're supposed to have a honeymoon after a wedding."
"What about Lily?" she frowned.
"Wayne and Grace are going to stay on for a few days and have offered to look after her. She'll love Maddy and Ben."
"That's nice of them." She regarded her fiancé for a few minutes and then leaned over and gave him a swift kiss. "Thank you. Where are we going to go?"
"It's a surprise," he told her, kissing her back. He pulled her to him, so that she was curled up against his chest. "I can hardly wait to marry you."
"Me too," she smiled. Leaning up against him she thought briefly of their journey to this moment. "I still have trouble believing it sometimes you know."
"Mmm – me too."
"I mean, I'm marrying Patrick Jane."
"Yes, you are," he told her. "And that's what?"
"It's just – hard to believe. I mean you drove me crazy for a long time."
He kissed her. "All part of my plan."
"Your plan?"
"Mmm hmm. My plan to make sure you couldn't do without me."
She snorted. "Right!"
"Well, it worked didn't it?"
She thought for a moment. "I guess it did. Although you could have done it without making me want to shoot you half the time!"
"Pffft," he answered. "You enjoyed it."
She sighed. "Yeah – I did. Does that make me weird?"
"No," he leaned down and kissed her nose. "It makes you perfect - for me."
She snuggled into him, thinking about the fact that although it had taken years for her to fall in love with Jane – he hadn't been anywhere near ready for a relationship at the beginning and she had known that. But he had very quickly become indispensible to her. In fact, thinking about it now, she wondered how in the world she had ever thought she could have possibly considered marrying Pike.
"Whatcha thinking about?" he asked.
"Pike," she said without considering her answer.
He was still for a moment and then he spoke. "Uh – I don't have anything to worry about, do I?"
She frowned and looked at him. "What?"
"Pike?"
"Pike?"
"You just said you were thinking about him.
"What? Oh," she laughed. "No, I was just thinking what an idiot I was to ever have thought there could be anyone but you."
"Good!" he said, this time kissing her deeply. "And don't forget that!"
"I won't – especially since I'll have your ring on my finger," she reminded him.
"Ring?" he asked, sounding innocent.
"Yes ring. You did think about a ring, didn't you?"
He simply grinned but didn't answer. They sat like that for a few minutes, simply enjoying the peace and stillness and the fact that they were together.
Suddenly they were interrupted by Jane's cell phone going off.
"Who could that be?" Teresa asked with a frown.
"Don't know." Jane moved so that he could get his phone out of his pocket. "Cho," he said, looking at the screen. "Hi Cho."
"What?" he frowned. "When?" He listened for a few more seconds, his face clearing. "Well, I can't say as I'm sorry. They deserved it." After speaking with Cho for a bit longer Jane disconnected his phone and leaned forward to lay it on the coffee table.
"What was that all about?"
"Juan Belen and Raul Santos are dead," he told her.
"Dead? What happened?"
"Uh – Trinidad Tossell – Belen's daughter - shot them both."
"She shot them? What?"
"Mmm – she must have known that her father was behind her husband's murder. Belen and Santos were meeting in Belen's office when she walked in and shot and killed them both. She was waiting for the police when they arrived. Cho says that she's been taken to the hospital. He figures she'll claim she wasn't in her right mind and she'll probably end up only doing a short time in prison."
"Wow. That's- "
"Justice," Jane said. "I feel sorry for her – to lose her husband and find out her father murdered him must have been devastating. I wonder if they had children."
"I don't know, but let's not think about them anymore," Teresa said abruptly. "They were an evil family, responsible for a lot of deaths and I don't want to waste anymore of our time on them."
"You're right," he said with a small smile. "What would you like to do instead?"
"Oh, I can think of something," she told him seductively. She turned and threw her leg over him and sat on him, straddling him.
"You are a wicked woman Teresa Lisbon," he gasped as she moved her hips.
"Mmm hmm – and you love it Patrick!"
"You read my mind."
Patrick could barely breathe. He watched Teresa walk slowly towards him, the soft sound of the violin and cello accompanying her. She was so beautiful and she was his.
He took a quick breath in – and closed his eyes, but only for a second. He wanted to make sure he stored this memory, this day in his memory palace. But even more than that he wanted to watch as the woman he loved walked towards him, to stand together to be married.
"Ma!" Lily's voice broke the tension of the moment and Jane turned slightly, to see a smiling, wiggling little girl in Sam's arms. She had seen her mother walking towards her and was calling out to her.
Teresa took her eyes off Patrick when she heard the baby and glanced at Lily and smiled and gave her a small wave. God, she was so lucky.
A moment later she reached the front and Patrick put out his hand and drew her to him. They then both turned and faced the judge.
Judge Delilah Carter smiled. "We are gathered here today …"
Jane wasn't sure if he'd be able to remember the actual ceremony. But what he would remember was the look in Teresa's eyes as she gazed at him. He'd known she loved him, she'd shown it in many ways and had told him often. But now he could see it shining from her very soul. He had never seen her look at him quite like this before and it was beautiful – and humbling. He knew then that the rest of his life was to be spent trying to be worthy of this woman – and to bringing her happiness.
"You may kiss the bride."
The judge's words brought him back to the present and he smiled and lifted the small veil and gently kissed his wife.
There were claps and hoots and hollers as the kiss went on for a while, but finally they separated and smiled at one another.
"Ladies and Gentlemen," the judge said, "Patrick and Teresa." That caused everyone to clap again and suddenly the two of them were being hugged by everyone. Jane found himself laughing out loud with joy – something he couldn't remember doing for a long, long time.
Eventually things calmed down and they were able to turn back to Judge Carter.
"Ready for the next part?" she asked with a smile.
Both Jane and Lisbon nodded. Jane turned around and took Lily from Grace, who was now holding her. "Come here sweetheart," he told her with a kiss.
"Da," she cried, "Ma."
"That's exactly right little girl," Judge Delilah laughed. "I am very pleased to be able to now proclaim, that by the power vested in me by the State of Texas, Lily Angela Ruskin is heretofore officially the daughter of Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon-Jane who have formally adopted her. From henceforth she will be known as Lily Angela Ruskin-Jane. Congratulations you three – you are officially a family!"
There were more cheers and claps and this time Lily was included in the hugs. Jane found himself having to wipe his eyes numerous times as he looked at his two ladies – both of them so beautiful and so loved.
"You're a lucky man," Cho said quietly to him as he stood back and watched everyone.
"Yes, I am," he said, something of wonder in his voice. He regarded Cho for a moment and gave a crooked grin. "I – can't say as I ever thought I'd get to say that again."
"No, I'm sure you didn't. Me either. I thought you would have gotten yourself killed years ago." He was silent for what felt like a long time. "But I'm glad you didn't. You deserve to be happy."
"Do I?" he asked softly, watching Teresa and Lily.
"You do," Kimball nodded, "and don't forget that. Don't waste your life on any more crap Jane. Look forward and love them."
Jane sighed, but a second later nodded. "You're right."
"Of course I am," Cho said seriously, although with a distinct twinkle in his eyes. "Now go and enjoy your wife and daughter."
"I will," Jane grinned. As he went to step away he looked back. "What about you Cho? Don't you want this?"
"Mmm – watching Wayne and Grace and now you and Lisbon – I think I've had my fill of romance."
Patrick chuckled but nodded at his friend and then did as he'd been instructed and made his way over to Teresa. "Hey wife," he said.
She swung around and gave him a glowing smile. "Hey husband."
"Happy?"
"So happy," she answered. She leaned back into him as he put his arms around her and looked at the friends and family that surrounded them. It was a small group – their teammates, past and present, Teresa's family, Sam and Pete – and surprisingly, Jane's father. At the last minute Patrick had called him up and had invited him to attend. They hadn't really had a chance to say much to one another, but she was pretty sure that it had made him happy to have the man there.
"Your father seems to be enjoying Lily," she said as she watched Alex Jane make the little girl laugh. Sam was again holding her but was smiling and saying something to Alex.
"Yes, he does."
"Are you – okay with him being here?"
"My father? Yeah, I'm okay with it."
"Did you want to have him come over for dinner one day?"
He thought for a moment, his chin resting gently on Teresa's head. "Mmm – maybe, I don't know. I – still -" he stopped and sighed.
"You're still angry and hurt at him over a number of things," she said gently. "I understand. Whatever you decide is fine with me." She could feel him nod but didn't say anymore, not wanting to spoil the day with worries about his father. "Lily's getting tired," she said, noticing that the little girl was starting to rub her eyes.
"Mmm – let's say goodbye to everyone and head out. Grace and Wayne are coming over later and then we can head out for our honeymoon."
For the next few minutes they said their goodbyes – giving everyone hugs and thanking them for coming. When Jane reached his father he stopped.
"I'm happy for you son," Alex Jane said. "You have a beautiful family. Both of your ladies are charmers."
"They are," he nodded.
"Thank you for inviting me. It – meant a lot. I've worried about you."
"Have you?" Patrick asked seriously.
"I have. I know – it may not have always seemed that way but I've never stopped thinking about you. I guess I just thought -"
"What?"
Alex shrugged and grimaced. "That you were better off without me."
Jane snorted softly. He was more like his father than he'd realized. Alex Jane was filled with guilt where his son was concerned and had stayed away as a result. And he had been about to do practically the same with Teresa. Thank heavens he'd figured it out before losing her.
"I'm glad you came," he said suddenly. "I've – missed you."
Alex stared at him – his eyes suddenly shining with suppressed tears. "Really? I thought you hated me."
"Oh – I did," he grinned, "at least some of the time. But you're my father. Uh – I'll call you when we're back."
"I'd like that."
Jane nodded. "But if you ever try to con me or one of my friends or family …" he left the rest unsaid.
Alex Jane nodded. "I swear on your mother's grave that I will never harm any of yours Paddy. I just want the chance to be – a father and grandfather again."
Jane gave him a crooked smile and reached out and patted his arm. "We both get another chance I guess. I'll talk to you soon."
"Everything okay?" Teresa asked as he approached her. She'd seen him talking to his father and worried that it would upset him. But his blinding smile dissolved that worry.
"Everything's fine. I told him I'd call when we get back."
"Good for you," she leaned forward and kissed him. "Now let's get going."
They waved one final time to everyone and collected Lily and made their way to their car. After buckling the little girl in her car seat they took off for home.
"We should look at buying a new house," Jane announced on their way home. "We need a yard for Lily to play in and I think we should get her a real bunny!"
Teresa laughed and suddenly envisioned a future with lots of animals, and toys – and a husband who took joy in small, everyday things and in being a husband and a father. She watched him as he drove and realized she'd just made the best decision of her life in marrying Patrick Jane.
Jane sat and watched as Teresa slowly rocked Lily to sleep. His wife and daughter. He shook his head, still not believing that he could say those words with joy. He reached out his hand and gently placed it on the back of Lily's head.
"She's so precious," he said softly.
"She is," Teresa nodded. "Thank you. Thank you for loving me and for letting me be her mother."
"You don't have to thank me Teresa. I couldn't help but love you – and as for Lily, she chose you to be her mother. Both of us are lucky that you love us." He smiled and knelt down beside her. "Thank you Teresa Lisbon – for loving me and saving me."
Teresa smiled and reached up and took his hand. "Patrick?"
"Yes?" he smiled at her.
"What do you think about – a brother or sister for Lily?"
His smile slowly faded as he looked at Teresa. "You mean – in the future?"
"Mmm – in about eight and a half months."
"Teresa! You're - ?"
She nodded. "I'm pregnant."
He laughed – he couldn't help it. He leaned his head against her arm and laughed with joy. He had thought that today his life was complete – that things couldn't get any better – but he had been wrong. They just had.
He slowly lifted his head and although he knew that the tears were running down his cheeks – he didn't care. His wife and daughter were with him – and they were going to have another child. He reached out and gently, reverently put his hand on Teresa's stomach. She covered his hand with hers.
He looked at Lily – innocently sleeping Lily. "I guess it's no longer just you and me kid." And he smiled.
The End.
