I opened my mouth and closed it again. I didn't know what to say. My Elijah, the man that refused to wear anything but formal attire, was now wearing gray baggy sweatpants. He still wore his nice shirt. He looked just ridiculous. "Where did you find those?" I tried not to let my disgust show. Elijah looked down at himself as if he hadn't noticed his change of clothes.
"I found them in my closet. I think they were a gift from you." Oh god. Yes, he was right. I forgot about that. I had given it to him as a joke, he had laughed and never even touched them. I was sure he had burnt them.
"Elijah, are you okay?" I asked, not sure what else to say. It was obvious that he wasn't.
"I am fine." He tried to reassure us, but it didn't work. "I am going to go on a walk." He moved towards the door, stopped and turned around again. "Alone." He clarified. Like hell! I would not let him wander around in this state on his own. He never let me out of his sight, when I needed help, I owed him the same. I let Elijah go first, I could give him the illusion of being alone before I stood up and turned to his siblings to tell them that I got it.
I followed Elijah back to the forest. It seemed like he went back to the cave where his mother had held him. I didn't think it was a good idea, but I didn't think he would listen to me. I hid behind a few trees, continuing to watch him. He stopped at the entrance to the cave, not moving a muscle, just watching.
"I know you're there, Sarah." He said after a while. I sighed. I clearly sucked at keeping my distance. I moved towards him until I stood beside him. He didn't even look up, he just stared at the cave and I joined him. "I told you not to come."
"So I couldn't see you staring at the cave?" I grabbed for his hand and he didn't take it away. I took that as a victory. He didn't answer. "Maybe we should leave, going back to the place of torture, doesn't seem like a good idea."
"She didn't torture me." He said quietly. I looked up surprised.
"She didn't?" I asked after he didn't continue. He just shook his head, took his hand away from mine and left. I sighed and followed him. I caught up to him and nudged him playfully. He stumbled and fell into one of the bushes. I stopped immediately and looked at him in shock. "Oh my god, I am sorry." I helped Elijah get back up. There were dirty patches on his sweatpants. What a shame. The sweatpants were probably ruined. Elijah looked at the dirt as if it personally offended him. He looked at me angrily and then dashed off.
I stood there flabbergasted. The pants were hideous. The dirt was the best thing that ever happened to those pants. I shook my head and followed Elijah.
I arrived at a crime scene. Elijah stood above a dead body. The tent next to him was ripped apart, his shirt was covered with blood. He looked like a baby vampire who fed for the first time.
"What happened?" I whispered. Elijah looked up, his gaze glassy.
"I killed him."
"Yes, I can see that." Elijah was a mess. He couldn't stay in Mystic Falls. There were too many people who knew about vampires. It was not an ideal place for a rogue vampire. I checked the pockets of the dead man for a phone. He hadn't texted anyone to say he already put his tent up, that was good. I looked further through his pockets to look for a car key. "Found it." I held them up triumphantly. "Did you see a car?" I asked, starting to pack the tent together. Elijah nodded to the left, not far away there was a truck parked. "Perfect. Help me get him up."
"What are you doing?" Elijah asked while he picked up the feet of the man, while I took the head. We put him carefully in the trunk.
"We can't have a murder in Mystic Falls, we need to bring him a few towns over," I explained while storing the tent and all the other evidence in the car and told Elijah to get in. "I love you, Elijah." I began carefully. "But we can't stay in Mystic Falls if you're unstable and won't even tell me what your mother did."
He didn't complain, thankfully, and just went in the car with me. I drove for a while and then dumped the man all the other evidence far away so that no one would take Mystic Falls into consideration.
We stayed in a small bed and breakfast, three towns over from Mystic Falls. I wanted to go further, but Elijah refused to move any farther away from his family. It was hard enough to convince him to stay with me as it was. It was like there were two Elijahs battling for dominance. One was the old Elijah, who didn't want to leave me and his family and wanted to tell me what happened, the other was the one his mother created, he couldn't get away from me and his family fast enough, he barely talked and seemed unable to cope with daily activities. Whenever I started the topic of his abduction, he blocked up and changed the topic. We were here a week, he seemed to be doing better, if you ignored his strange behavior at times. Mostly, I kept us preoccupied with wedding preparations. I did most of the work and he just watched, but at least he didn't run away. The guest list and venue were already sorted. I had convinced Nik –or rather Caroline had – that it would be a good idea to celebrate at their house. It was huge and beautiful. Right now I was busy designing my wedding dress. I wanted it to be like the one I was planning to wear back then when we were engaged the first time, but sadly that dress was somewhere lost in time.
"I am going to go out and buy us something to eat," Elijah announced.
"Wait, I come with you," I said quickly, standing up, almost knocking my drawing supplies from the table. Elijah pushed me back down on the chair.
"Sarah, I am fine. I admire your reluctance to leave me alone, but you are busy and I am just going to the restaurant across the street." He explained. I gritted my teeth, but I agreed reluctantly. He was right, logically there was no reason for me to go with him.
"Well, if you sure?"
"I am." He nodded, kissed me goodbye and then left.
I started to worry when he didn't return within half an hour. I knew that I was an overbearing girlfriend – fiancée, but Elijah was unstable, even though he didn't relapse in a week. I put my pencil down and left in search for him. I didn't have to look long.
I opened the door to the restaurant and was immediately pinned against the door. Elijah was standing above me, fangs bared and veins all over his face. His hand gripped my neck and I coughed loudly. I could count on one hand the number of times I've seen Elijah with his vampire face on. He was too composed to ever let emotions run his body.
"Elijah-", I chocked, trying to push him off me. His fangs retreated and his eyes turned to their usual color again. He let me go.
"Sarah? Oh god, I am sorry." He looked miserable and I hugged him quickly before his guilt took over. The restaurant looked like a scene out of a horror movie. There was no person alive. Blood was on the table and on the walls. It was a massacre. I let go off Elijah and watched him closely. His shirt was bloody, but there was another huge stain under it, which looked like coffee. I pushed him to one of the benches that were not occupied by dead people and sat down across from him. I took his hand.
"This is the time, where you have to tell me what your mother did." I started, not willing to let this go anymore. "It is clearly affecting you and I can't help you if you don't tell me about it." I pleaded. He sighed.
"She did nothing to me, she just revealed something of my past that I wasn't aware of."
"It is not just in your past! You just murdered random people! This is so unlike you!" He looked away and I sighed.
"I am not judging you, Elijah. I am well aware that none of us are angels. I did worse than this, but this is not you." I tried to make him understand. "It doesn't matter what you did in your past or what someone did to you. I will always love you." He seemed to think about it. "I told you what my brothers did to me," I added and smirked at him.
Flashback 1984 –Mystic Falls
I was waiting outside Stefan's room. My father and I conspired together to get Katherine out of our house. You knew it was bad when I conspired with our father. Katherine might have enchanted my brothers, but no longer. We would free them out of that monster's grasp. I heard choking and screaming. That was my cue. I opened the door.
Stefan and Katherine were both indecent, but there was no time to worry about that. Katherine was withering on the floor, the vervain that we gave Stefan to drink worked.
"Stefan, get out of here and get father. We'll take care of her!"
"Sarah, what did you do?" He asked me shocked, not knowing what happened to his beloved vampire.
"Saving you," I said, struggling with Katherine's weight. She wasn't as unconscious as I'd like her to be. She could still move and she was getting to her senses faster than I anticipated. "Father!" I called for help, not prepared for what happened next.
Katherine stood up so fast, I didn't even see it happening. I screamed and something rusty trickled down my throat. I later realized that it was her blood. Father stormed into the room, stake in hand. Damon was not far behind. Everyone was staring at Katherine and me, her hands were around my neck, ready to snap it if necessary.
"Let me go, or I'll kill her." , she hissed, nothing from the nice girl facade left. My father moved away not willing to risk it. Damon and Stefan stayed put.
"Where are you going? You can't leave!" Damon screamed. I looked at him in disbelief. Would he really risk my life just to have Katherine around? I couldn't even protest, Katherine was still choking me. Father stopped Stefan and Damon from interfering. He held them tight, while Katherine used me to move past them. Outside she loosened her grip on me and spun me around.
"That was fun. I really enjoyed that. I never really liked you anyway."
"The feeling is mutual," I assured her, stroking my neck. There was probably going to be bruising.
"You almost ruined my plan, but I guess without you telling George everything, I wouldn't even have my plan." She grinned at me. I stood there in shock. I knew for a fact that George used vervain and could werewolves even be compelled?
"George hates vampires."
"No one hates me. I can be very convincing." She smiled at me and I felt sick.
"He wouldn't," I said weakly.
"Oh, he did. Many times in fact. You strung him along a little too long." I slapped Katherine as hard as I could. She just laughed, but I had probably broken my wrist. It began to heal and that's when I realized she injected me with her blood. Damon and Stefan came barging outside.
"Where is father?" I asked. They wouldn't go as far as hurt him, would they? I didn't know anymore.
"Tied to the bed," Stefan answered, at least he looked ashamed.
"Mother would turn around in her grave if she knew what you two are doing!" I screamed at them. "Choosing a vampire above your own family!"
"Oh, Sarah!" Katherine gushed. "Full of good ideas today. Let's make them choose."
"WHAT?" Stefan, Damon and I said at the same time, while Katherine put her hands back around my neck.
"Choose. Let me turn her into a vampire and I'll stay in Mystic Falls. We can all be vampires together. Or I let her live and go away forever, I will never bother you again. You will forget I ever existed." She smiled and so did I. She was too full of herself. She sat herself up for failure.
Damon and Stefan looked at each other. Then they looked at me. My smile fell. Katherine laughed.
"I AM YOUR SISTER!" I screamed. "We are family!" I cried. They weren't listening and I realized, I was going to die today.
"You're going to be a vampire," Stefan explained. "We can live for all eternity together!"
They were insane! Maybe compelled. There was no hope. My brothers were dead.
"I'd rather die." I spat.
"You will." Katherine agreed. I felt the snap of my neck and then everything was black.
"The difference is, my love, that you didn't have a choice in the matter. It was chosen for you. I, on the other hand, did have a choice. I've got no one to blame." I rolled my eyes.
"You've seen me in plenty of terrible situations. We all did bad things, we all have to live with that. You had more time to accumulate bad choices. I know that. You know that. Why is this suddenly messing with you?"
"I killed Tatia." He suddenly confessed. I blinked twice.
"What do you mean? Your mother killed Tatia. Is that what all this is about?" I asked confused.
"No, my mother just took the blame. I lost control, I – didn't know what I was. I didn't know what would happen." His voice shook. I gripped his hand on the table. "I killed her." He put his fingers on my temple and showed me what happened. I saw him transitioning and going to see Tatia, he wasn't prepared for the bloodlust and killed her. He picked her up and brought her to his mother, who took the blame so that Elijah could go on with his life. He made himself forget what happened, he rewrote his memories.
"Oh, Elijah." I didn't know what else to say. "This memory doesn't have to change anything. This is all ancient history."
"It changes everything, Sarah!" Elijah said passionately. "I am not the man I thought I was. I killed the woman I loved and then forgot about it. Wearing a clean suit and pretending I was as clean. It was all a lie. Who knows how often my mind played these tricks on me!"
"Now you're being silly." I smiled at him. "I've known you for 100 years, you're exactly the man I've always known you were. I know you would never hurt me. You're the man I want to marry. Your life might be upside down right now but doesn't change anything for me. I will always love you and we will get through it. We'll get your self-esteem up to where it used to be. Dirt seems to be a trigger for you, so we'll work on that. You're not some bloodthirsty fledgling. And you can still dress nicely without having to wear your suits." I leaned over the table and kissed him slowly.
"I love you."
"I love you, too. Now go change. I think it's best if we skip town." He got up and searched for something fitting from all the victims in the restaurants.
He emerged with Jeans and a red a little too tight shirt. It was still weird to see him like that, but it was by far better than the stupid sweatpants.
