Katara tapped her pencil on her textbook in frustration. Four years led up to this. One textbook, notes, and a pencil draped behind her ear while she tapped the other one.
One more final and then she was going to graduate. One more final to pass. Then there would be no more roommate that liked to borrow her clothes, no more harsh professors, and no more guys trying to hit on her when she had told them time and time again that she was taken.
She sighed, letting her head fall onto the textbook, the words blurring together as her eyes got closer and closer to the page.
Her legs were cramped from sitting in the same position for who knows how long. Her clock changed, letting her know she had been studying for over two hours, and yet she was still not even through half of her notes.
Her eyes were now level with her textbook. Her pencil rolled back and forth every time she breathed in and out. With one breath to hard, the pencil rolled off her desk, causing Katara to bend down to retrieve it.
One the way back up, Katara's blue eyes glanced at a frame picture on her desk. It was the day of her graduation. She was dressed in her cap and gown, a yellow tassel caps littered the ground where they stood.
Her grandmother had taken that picture right after they had thrown their caps in the air. Zuko's arms were laced around her. Sokka, Aang and Toph were surrounding her. Sokka was proudly holding up his diploma along with her and Zuko. Big grins were plastered on everybody's face.
She missed those days. She missed the days with her friends. Out of her four years in college, Zuko had been only able to visit twice, both in freshman year. He became caught up in the college life that both of them only had time to skype.
It wasn't the same seeing the person you loved through a screen versus seeing him in person.
Katara never got many visitors out of her four years anyways.
When Sokka was on a break from college, he had been too busy traveling with their dad to come and stop by. It irked Katara that after so many years of being absent, Sokka was able to forgive their father. But she never brought her opinion up in front of Sokka anymore, it would get them both into a nasty mood after they had argued all of their points to the brink of extinction.
Besides, Katara had been too busy with college. Not to mention the cost of traveling back and forth between here and the states was too much for the measly job she held here in England. Minimum wage for four years doesn't accumulate enough money for round tickets every year.
Her dorm room door opened with a bang, alerting her to the presence of her roommate.
It was days like these where Katara wished she picked an on campus apartment to live in instead of a dorm room. Though knowing her luck, the person she would get to help pay the rent would be her roommate, as her roommate was the only friend Katara really had on the campus. But dorm rooms were cheaper too and this was her last year.
Though the sudden noise of the door banging into the side of the wall, startled Katara enough to drop her pencil; the distraction was welcomed, as her brain had started to muddle simple facts together that she used to know by heart.
Her roommate, Lily, came skipping in, her flips flops whacking against the underside of her foot, creating a melody to go with her singing. Lily had her headphones attached to her ears as she sung some recent pop song off key, that Katara hadn't even bothered to learn. Lily's english accent became apparent as she hit the chorus, making Katara feel home sick for a town she hadn't seen in years.
But there was just one more final and she wouldn't have to feel homesick anymore.
"Can you stop, please?" Katara raised her voice over Lily's horrendous singing.
Lily turned her head, noticing Katara moving her mouth but couldn't hear what she was saying. Her head bounced up and down to the music filtering through her ears. "What!?"
"I said, can you turn off your music!?"
"Oh! Yeah, of course." Lily plucked the earbuds out of her ears, throwing her ipod onto the closest bed, not watching to see if it jumped off the bed. Lily was always careless with the little things. "Sorry 'bout that."
"Its okay. I really needed a distraction anyways."
Lily flung herself on her bed, right next to her ipod, her red hair billowing out behind her in a curly mess. "What were you doing anyways? Its a nice day, you should be outside. Are you waiting to talk to that hot boyfriend of yours?" Lily said, a smirk plastered on her lips.
Lily was one of the few people who actually believed Katara about her 'imaginary boyfriend' since she stumbled in on one of their conversations through skype last year.
That was an awkward experience that Katara wish had never happened.
Katara grunted, letting her head fall back onto her book, crinkling the pages underneath. "I was studying. And I haven't talked to Zuko recently."
"To bad. Hey I'm going to a party later tonight, want to come?"
"Can't." It was a response Katara gave to Lily everytime she asked.
Lily got up from the the bed. Out of the corner of her eye, Katara could see a pout present on Lily's face like this time it would have been different. Her face was hidden out of view as she rummaged through her closet.
Katara sighed, running a hand through her hair. She had been staring at the one passage for almost twenty minutes now. It was time for her to change the scenery but a change of scenery without her roommate present. She scooped up her pencils, throwing them into her bag, the one that was draped over her bed. She stuffed her notes into the page of her textbook, then deciding to stuff the less important notes into her bag, not caring if the creased.
"I think I am going to go outside, for fresh air and everything."
"Hmm? Okay, see you tomorrow." Lily picked a shirt up. It would have been tight on Lily, hugging her curves and showing a dangerous amount of cleavage. Lily held the black shirt to her chest, but with a shake of her head she put it back, looking for another one.
Katara tapped her chin, wanting to ask Lily something but whatever it was had flown from her mind in those seconds she was conversing with Lily.
Carrying the textbook, Katara swung around, closing the door on her way out.
It took Katara five steps away from her room to realize that that was her closet Lily was looking for clothes in, not the one that Lily chose for herself.
It was time to get coffee from the cafe down the street from the campus. At least she could look out of the window, and day dream of something other than the final that she will be studying for all night long at the rate she was going.
The sun was still a few hours away from setting but clouds in the distance made it look like twilight was almost upon them.
Her shoes clipped on the cobbled walkway. There was a bustle of people on the sidewalk, but the bustle cleared out when many people crossed the street, hoping to get to the best restaurant for dinner.
Though the fragrances from across the street were drifting into Katara's nose, calling to be eaten, for her, it was not quite time for dinner. Seeing that her stomach didn't rumble at the thought of a substantial meal, Katara headed on to her destination.
As Katara walked down the sidewalk, she pondered whether to get tea or coffee. Her mind lighting up as memories came back in force, of the fun times she and Zuko had working at his Uncle's tea shop.
Tea, she decided to get tea.
Her text book was heavy in her hands as she adjusted it to two hands instead of just one. Her fingernails dug into the back of the textbook as she concentrated on trying not to drop it. To keep her mind from the heaviness of the textbook, she trained her eyes to look to the ground, deciding to try to only step on the block of cobblestone and not any cracks.
It was harder than one would expect. The cobble stones were tiny, only big enough for the ball of her shoe. It became a game to her. Every time she stepped on a crack, whether from a pedestrian or form her own fault, she would add on another ten minutes of studying time.
She had added an hour to her already alloted time when a shadow came across the cobble stone.
But it was too late.
Katara's full body slammed into the person walking towards her.
The man, not expecting the amount of force she plowed into him with, toppled backwards, putting his hands out behind him to brace his fall. His head just managed to stop short of being banged on the cobble stone, but his eyes were squeezed shut waiting for the impact.
Katara toppled forward onto the man as he toppled backwards. Her bag flew off her shoulder, scattering the papers that had been kept crumpled inside, thankfully none of her notes landed in the puddle that was occupying a divot in the walkway. Her textbook slid out of her hands, sliding on the cobble stone until it hit the wall of a near by shop. A gust of wind opened the top of the textbook, fluttering the pages.
Katara placed her hands beside his head before she could fully slam into him as his back had already slammed into the stone walk way.
He grunted, opening his eyes the same time Katara cautiously opened hers. Those golden eyes she hadn't had the pleasure of seeing in person for almost four years were staring back at her. His left eye was still surrounded by a red glaring scar, and his hair was still an inky black mess.
A smile lit up on her face as her mouth caught up with what her eyes were seeing. "Zuko!"
Her roommate is out for the night, presumably at the party she wanted Katara to go to. They lay on the bed cuddling. Katara's head is resting on Zuko's chest as he thumbs through the textbook, asking Katara random questions when he passes an important section. His arm is slung around her waist pulling her closer when she shivers.
After a long night of studying, they fall asleep together. The textbook gradually falls off the bed as they shift closer together for warmth in her cold dorm room.
They wake up in each others arms, laughing when they realize they slept in their street clothes.
She clasps his hand with hers as they walk to her last class together. Their steps are synchronized, their shoulders touching.
Their hands spread apart as she says good bye, but this times she knows she will see him again real soon. Zuko's smile doesn't fade as he watches her walk through the door.
In times of great need, there is always that one person that can help repair the shattered, and sometimes that person stays with you for the rest of your lives.
The shattered do have a chance to be repaired.
This is the last chapter of To Shatter in Seconds.
Thank you all who read this story. It really means a lot to me that you took time out of your day to read this. One final thanks to all who ever reviewed. Thanks to all who followed and favorited.
I was looking back at the first couple of chapters and I realized how much I changed the story from my orginal idea (and how much my writing has improved). So thank you for sticking with me through the whole story and tolerating those first few chapters:)
Please Review/Favorite/Follow:)
PS. I hope to come back and write another story for this fandom, so keep a look out! Probably sometime during the summer, hopefully:)
