'Is she..?'
'I… She'
'Dead? Is she dead?'
'….'
'No, she's not dead Miss Dawson' Dr Wise spoke as he walked up to them.
Everyone let out a sigh of relief at his words it felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off their shoulders hearing them words.
'Thank god' Gabby sighed as she leant back in her wheelchair.
'What happened though?' Kelly asked.
'Miss Shay had a stroke…'
'A stroke?' Gabby interrupted 'How bad was it? Is she going to wake up? Is she going to be okay?'
'Gabby calm down. Let the doctor speak' Antonio spoke as he laid his hand on her shoulder rubbing it softly to try and calm his sister down.
'Sorry right continue please'
'So, as I said Miss Shay had a stroke, a transient ischemic attack which is a mini stroke. Due to the pervious traumatic brain injury, it was worse than normal which is why we had to rush her into surgery. We managed to clear the clot without any complications, but we don't know what damage this has done on top of the previous injury. We need to monitor her closely in the ICU for a few days.' Dr Wise explained.
'This can't be happening' Gabby whispered as she closed her eyes to stop the tears from pouring down her face.
'One more thing, I understand that you all care for Miss Shay but she can't handle the stress. Whatever drama you have going on it needs to be left out of this hospital. Today has proved it. You all need to help her focus on getting better.' Dr Wise stated calmly before turning around and walking away.
'I…. I caused this didn't I?' Gabby asked looking at Kelly and Boden.
'No, you didn't' Kelly answered finally finding his voice.
'I did I told her how I felt and It was all too much and now she's in ICU. It's all my fault…' Gabby shouted getting upset.
'Gabriella Dawson, you listen to me now.' Boden shouted over Gabby's frantic voice as he kneeled next to her wheelchair.
'This is not your fault, this is nobody's fault. What happened today is a freak accident, we don't know what the actual cause of it is. What matters now is that you get better and that we all come together as the family we are to help Leslie through this.' He continued in a strong but calm voice.
'He's right Gabby it's not your fault' Kelly spoke as he moved to hug Gabby.
'We need to stick together and we will get through this Gabs and so will Shay no matter what we can handle this. You two will be together for a very long time and have kids and get married and live happily ever after.' Kelly whispered as he hugged Gabby tight.
Gabby chuckled at Kelly's words, tears falling down her cheeks, she wanted that so bad with Shay. She wanted to marry the woman she loved, she would do it right now if she could.
Gabby finally calmed herself down after Kelly's words she knew he was right, but she was still freaked out, she couldn't believe this was happening after she had finally told Shay how she felt.
'I am going to go back to the station and tell the guys what happened. Severide you can have the next shift off, get some rest we will need you back and ready to go. Dawson, you have 2 weeks off, get yourself better. Don't even think about coming back before those 2 weeks are up as I will take you home myself.' Boden spoke as he gathered his coat giving both Kelly and Dawson a nod before walking off down the hall.
Gabby looked on as Boden walked down the hall to exit the wing, still breathing deeply to calm herself down. Both Kelly and Antonio by her side as they looked on towards Shay's room. They then both turned and looked at each other with a silent nod.
'You should go in Gabby' Antonio spoke putting a soft hand on Gabby's arm afraid to make her jump.
'Can you wheel me in Kelly? I don't think I can go in alone' Gabby spoke as she grabbed on to her brother's hand looking towards at Kelly with tears brimming in her eyes.
'Of course.' He whispered slowly standing up.
'I will go downstairs and speak to April since she saw our getaway, see what the damage is and how long you need to stay here. I will see you down stairs.' Antonio spoke as he leant over and gave Gabby a hug. He held on to her extra tight this time.
Slowly he stood up manoeuvring himself to be able to push Gabby in her wheelchair. He gave Antonio a nod as he let go of Gabby and made his exit downstairs. Kelly slowly pushed the wheelchair towards Shay's room. He was anxious about what he was going to see when he walked into his best friend's room, but he was more scared about how Dawson would deal with it. As he slowly made his way into the room all he could hear was the machines bleeping, each for a different thing. It was daunting to know that these machines were helping keep his best friend alive in a way.
As Gabby sat in her wheelchair getting closer and closer to Shay she finally realised the impact this stroke had on Shay's body. She looked even weaker than the first time, the colour in her cheeks has gone, she looked so pale. Gabby could feel her heart break even more as she looked on at Shay. This wasn't the way things were meant to be. She had finally told her how she felt and now they were right back to square one. Shay in a coma.
A thought crossed through Gabby's mind as Kelly pulled her up beside Shay.
'Kelly…. What if she doesn't remember what I told her in the church?' Gabby whispered.
She didn't wait for a response as the tears felt down her face.
Shay might not remember what she had said.
They could truly be back to square one
