"I-I never thought that they would actually fall in love… but they did."
Silence followed that statement as the group came to a sudden realization. The day's events ran through the young people's minds as they sat in silence. Each one lost in their own thoughts.
It had been six years since their four youngest members had graduated from Ouran Academy. The prestigious Ouran Academy, playground for the supper rich and beautiful, the place where their group had been completed with the arrival of Haruhi Fujioka and Renge Houshakuji. And now, two from their group were dead.
How had they come from an inseparable group of teens to adults who had not seen each other for years until a tragedy reunited them? How had they not known that two of their former group had fallen in love despite their differences and interactions in high school? How had such a tightknit group of friends turned into nothing more than mere acquaintances at a funeral? How had the two lovers kept their affair a secret a secret from the world, considering who they were?
How had he of all people, lost contact with his best friend after years of constantly intruding in Kyoya Ohtori's life? Why had she never dialed the other girl's number when Renge Houshakuji gave it to her in hopes of remaining friends after graduation?
Now, it was too late. Too late to contact Kyoya Ohtori and pester him endlessly. Too late to dial Renge Houshakuji's number and ask about her day. Now, there would be no calls of "Mommy!" from Tamaki or "Medusa!" from the Hitachiin twins. The Shadow King and the Eccentric Otaku were no longer around to reluctantly answer "Yes Daddy?" or spit fire in anger of well-earned nickname.
She was being forced into an arranged marriage and his father had been searching for a suitable bride. It had never occurred to anyone, least of all parents that Renge and Kyoya had found each other. Or that the pair had even wanted to marry for love.
And so, they had each boarded that flight to Paris. She on the excuse of wanting to see her homeland and French friends before marrying a complete stranger. He on grounds of attending a business meeting on behalf of his ailing father. No one, other than his sister, had known that the two planned to marry in Paris. She had thought that a secret marriage in the City of Lights would be so romantic, so un-Kyoya like and so fitting of Renge. Although, truth be told, she had originally planned on revealing that information upon her brother's return to Japan along with his new bride.
But fate had had other ideas for Renge Houshakuji and Kyoya Ohtori. The plane they had boarded had never reached its intended destination. Instead, it had fallen to the earth and taken with it the lives of those on board.
Now family and friends were gathered together to mourn the passing of Renge and Kyoya. After the ceremony, five young men and one young woman had gathered together. And the words "I-I never thought that they would actually fall in love… but they did" were murmured only to be greeted by silence as they all realized it was too late.
