Title: Magic Books

Summary: Thanks to a few magic books and her friends acrobatic display on the rooftops, Jody has finally figured out her best friends biggest secret. Now came the hard part- telling June what all she knows.

...

Gathering her courage, Jody shifted the books in her arms and stared at the closed door before her. Taking a deep breath to calm her nerves, she slowly opened the door and stepped into the room. "Hey, June."

June pushed the off button on her music player and tugged the headphones off her head and set them beside her on the bed, smiling. "Hey, Jody. What's up?"

"Oh, nothing much." She kicked the door closed behind her, glancing over to the shelves filled with magical knick-knacks and books. She vaguely wondered what types of spells and potions they dusty shelves housed. "I, uh, I borrowed some of your magic books, so I thought I'd return them."

June sat completely upright then, smile fading into a worried frown as she watched the nervous blonde tap the hard edges of the books in her hands, back stiff and elbows propping her up. "You, uh, you didn't try any of the spells in those books, did you?"

She shook her head, brow furrowing. "No. Why?"

"Oh, no reason." She sighed in relief, raising an eyebrow. "I thought you said books. Not finished with the other ones yet?"

"Er, no, not yet. I just thought... this book is more important than the other ones, in my opinion. I'll get the others to you by the end of next week, I swear."

"Take your time." She dismissed. Jody slowly crossed the floor to her bed and held the book out, firmly gripping the sides.

"Here."

"Thanks." She took the book from her, idly scanning the title as the blonde tip-toed backwards towards the door, back hovering a few inches away from the wood.

"There, uh..." She swallowed, confidence faltering. June glanced up, giving Jody her full attention. "There was one part of the book that seemed really important. I, uh, I marked the page."

Tipping the book to the side, June pulled open the familiar worn pages, eyes widening as she read the chapter name written in large font at the top of the page.

'Chapter Five; The Legacy Of The Te Xuan Ze.'

Turning the page, she slowly traced her finger down the family tree arching down the page, eventually ending up at the last picture taken. Jasmine Lee. A small pencil line was drawn away from the picture, circling around the words 'June's Grandmother?' In her companions familiar cursive handwriting.

Jody smiled awkwardly. "I thought it was important, so... I saw you a few weeks ago. The chapter... kinda confirmed things for me."

June stared at the pages a few moments longer before finally closing the book with a sigh and setting it down on the bed, eyes averted from her face. "Yes." Jody perked up. "It's... really important to me, Jody. I hope you can understand..."

"I don't really understand it..." She said slowly. "But... I want to try. So... yeah, gonna keep the books a little longer, if that's okay with you."

June didn't look up. "Go right ahead."

"Thanks." Jody flashed her a beaming smile before turned and opening the door. "Oh, and, June?"

The girl finally looked up, scanning her face. "Yeah?"

"I won't tell anyone. I promise." She didn't wait for an answer, stepping out of the room and closing the door behind her with purpose, leaving the dumbfounded girl behind.

"I hope so, Jody." June said finally, flopping down on the bed and listening to the footsteps disappear down the hall, a warmth in her stomach and she slowly broke out into a smile. "I sure hope so."
