Volume 1 - I am

Chapter 1: Jerusalem

Story Start.

-Jerusalem, Province of Iudæa, Roman Empire: A.D. XII-

It was dark beneath the branches of olive trees that sat in Gethsemane, though the moon's light shone down beautifully through the clouds, and there he was, alone in that garden outside Jerusalem, as he took on the moonlight and the wind danced around with the leaves in silence.

"Far Horizons… how far those horizons would be, I wonder?" he muttered as he sat back a trunk of an olive tree. "It won't be until two more decades until everything changes, what do I do in the meantime?"

"Train? Make business? Be a rabbi?" a female voice said behind him and he glanced up and saw the same woman from twelve years ago; the angel that heralded the coming of the Lord - Gabriel.

"Rabbi? Me? No. Train, sure. Business… hmm, maybe," he muttered to himself before he turned to the angel. "What brings you here, Gabriel?"

"The Lord sent me for you, to tell you that you should start moving ahead," said the angel and he raised an eyebrow.

"What? There are still two decades before He starts His ministry, besides, I'm still preparing."

"The Lord Son is in the Temple right now, with teachers and other wise men," she said, and the man looked at her in surprise.

"My, my, this early in His human life? He's only 12."

"Yet wiser than Solomon will ever be," replied the angel and the man shrugged before he stood up and faced the direction toward the Holy City.

"Solomon was very wise for a human… this is the Lord we are talking about, Gabriel, of course, He will be wiser than the King of Mages," he said, and the angel nodded in agreement.

The man inhaled the fresh air and walked away from the angel towards the city in silence under the shadow of the night. He passed the Roman guards quietly and got himself hidden between the civilians as they celebrated the Feast of Passover.

He walked behind the streets, beneath the shade of the night, one street after another, he headed for the most important place in the city, and in the world.

The Second Temple.

Up there upon Moriah where Solomon first built his original temple, which the man had witnessed in person centuries ago.

But it was remodelled by Herod the Great for his grand projects of the time.

"Ah, Herod's grand designs never fail to impress me," he muttered as walked through the Court of the Gentiles where pilgrims gather and bought souvenirs, sacrificial animals, food, and had currency exchanges. "And He might probably show anger in this when He is older."

Then the man vanished in plain sight, and headed for the sanctuary itself, but then, his gaze turned to the side and saw a Jewish boy, at least 12 years of age, talking with the wise men of the Temple, and the older men seemed to be engrossed about what the boy was saying, then the man moved on to the holiest place in the world.

קֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים

Qṓḏeš HaQŏḏāšîm.

Kodesh Hakodashim.

The Holy of Holies.

Now, he was not the High Priest who only entered the innermost sanctuary once a year during Yom Kippur, however, he could be in the Holy of Holies by God Himself, for that is where they always convened.

When he passed through the two thick curtains, he observed the holiest place in the world, and saw the vessels on their right places, with the notable exception of the Ark of the Covenant, which has been gone for years since the ending of the Babylonian captivity.

The perfect cube chamber was dark, and he only saw its contents with his enhanced eyesight, and at the centre of the floor there was a raised platform, where the missing Ark of the Covenant should be placed, and he sat there, in silence.

"You saw Him," a voice said from around him.

The man nodded as he closed his eyes and felt the magnificent presence before him. "Aye, I have, where are His mother and foster father?"

"Not with Him, for they did not notice Him vanish from their presence as they left."

"Heh, just like a child, but something much more, something greater than this world."

-Antonia Fortress, Jerusalem: The following day-

Annius Rufus has always been a prudent man. He did his duty as Prefect of Iudæa according to the expectations set to him by Rome. The Jews respected him enough, and he did the same in return, and no one can say that he was a terrible person.

And in the end, you could say that he was a nice man, being a pagan aside.

Though, he was not pleased today.

"Quid tu hic?" the Prefect asked, brown eyes narrowed and face stern as he asked, 'why are you here?'.

"Cur non?" he replied, that is 'why not?' and he looked amused as he watched the reaction of the Prefect at his reply.

Annius just sighed and sat down, his toga crinkled as if he just woke up, which he just did, hence the current attitude to the man.

"Alright, seriously, what are you doing here, Naruto? Did you come from Rome?"

Naruto shook his head as he poured down wine to a goblet and drank from it, then replied. "No, I did not."

"Besides, what the hell would I do there? Except on recording knowledge, which I already have abled bodies to do it for me, and to answer your first question, I'm here because of Pesach or have you forgotten what I wrote to you?" The golden-haired man said while the Prefect nodded in understanding.

"Ah, yes of course, but why? You're not a Jew, not a Roman, not Greek, not Egyptian nor Parthian. I don't even know what you are for the 12 years that we've known one another, except for the fact that you have been alive before Romulus founded Rome," said Annius while Naruto shrugged as he took a sip of wine.

"Don't bother thinking about that, let's just say I have a duty in this world and for the last several centuries, it is revolving around Jews," he replied while Annius rolled his eyes at the usual reply that his friend gave to him. "Also, I came here to Jerusalem because this city has a special feeling into it, something divine."

Naruto put down the goblet to the table and stood up and looked outside the fortress, to the Temple Mount.

"In two decades, this world will be changed forever," said Naruto as he gazed upon Herod's Temple while the Prefect of Iudæa remained silent in contemplation. "And you would not see it come, not even Augustus Caesar, who will die in two years."

"What do you mean Caesar will die?"

Naruto glanced to his friend before his gaze returned to the temple. "Just as I said it, he will die in two years, I have seen it, but it is better if you forget about it, all humans die anyway."

Annius' eyes narrowed as he watched his friend put down the goblet and walk away from him, but he then heard him speak. "I'm calling in the favour that you promised to me."

"Now? I'm just the Prefect of this backwater country, what could I possibly offer to you?"

Naruto turned back to Annius will a small smile. "You just said it, you are the Prefect of this place, and that is exactly what I need."

"I'm going to get a property near the Temple, deep beneath this city, ignore whatever you hear or see no matter what."

-Second Temple, Temple Mount: Two days later-

A fine winter morning it was or was it as fine as a morning can be during winter in Jerusalem, but it did not matter to him anyway. Day or night, it did not matter if he was up to something, which he was, in that moment as he stood atop a pinnacle of the Temple, unnoticed as he surveyed the entire city from where he stood.

He watched out for viewpoints and important locations from his place for minutes until he vanished within the Temple and within the Holy of Holies once more, but this time, there was Gabriel inside and she sat on where the Ark of the Covenant was supposed to be.

"Naruto," she greeted him with a curt nod, and Naruto replied in kind.

"Gabriel."

"Father said that you dug yourself a cavern deep the city," she said while Naruto chuckled before he gave her a nod.

"Aye, I did," he answered before he sat beside her. "I figured it would be useful for something one day, I don't know what or when I may look like your father but I'm not Him, I don't know everything, but when it happens, I hope that I'll be ready."

The two remained in silence within the darkness of the Holy of Holies for some time, and it was a peaceful silence, and in what seemed to be an eternity, Gabriel broke the silence.

"How do you like this city?"

Naruto looked towards her with surprise, but he calmed down soon after. His eyes shone before it reverted to its original form and he replied.

"It feels different than it used to be during the last number of centuries that I visited this place, ever since your father began His silence four centuries ago. But that's probably because the Messiah graced this place already, and He will return to this place one day, or so as your father said."

Gabriel shifted from her position while Naruto looked down to his two hands, where ten golden rings are worn by all his fingers.

"He showed me a short vision of what will happen, and to say the least, I hope to do what He asked me to do."
