AN: Holy crap, don't hate me. It has been such a long time since I've updated and I know it looked like I gave up on this story, but I am going to try my hardest to keep updates going. So again, so sorry! Reviews always appreciated!
Chapter 10:
Ashley was able to learn a lot more about Carlton as he explained his life story. He would blush here and there, obviously not used to talking about himself for such a long period of time. Ashley just sat, her elbows on the table, face in her hands, completely mesmerized by him. He really was adorable, she thought. Ashley had only been back for such a small amount of time, but something with her and Carlton just clicked.
"Ok. Now you know more about me than probably anyone. So now, can you please tell me more about Logan?" Carlton asked desperately.
Ashley sighed, "Fine. All I know is, at the end he got very controlling. When he started thinking I might leave him, he got paranoid. He wouldn't let me out of his sight. He was always asking me questions."
"What kind of questions?"
"Just… I don't know, he kept saying he wanted us to be closer. So he'd ask personal things… I suppose that isn't a very good sign is it?"
Carlton laughed, "For a normal person, it's fine. For a potential serial killer, not so much."
"But honestly, he was going through a hard time. He said a close friend had recently passed, and I assumed his odd behavior was due to that."
"Hmm ok, continue."
Ashley gave him an exhausted look, "That's it Carlton. That's all I know."
Ashley could tell he wanted to argue and pull more out of her, but that was really it. She never in a million years suspected she would be sitting here discussing her potential serial killer ex-boyfriend with a Head Detective who she currently had a little something going on with. Oh no, that was never really a possibility. But here she was. Eventually Carlton seemed to accept that that was all she had to say. he pulled out his phone and called Juliet. Ashley could hear her on the other line.
"Hey, so this is what we got…" Carlton then explained everything Ashley had told him. Ashley knew it wasn't much to go on, but it was still something. Carlton and Juliet talked for another couple of minutes and then he hung up.
"She's gonna look into it."
"Right, uh ok." Ashley started to play around with her pizza, taking her fork and sliding it back and forth. Was this really happening? Is it really possible Logan's a serial killer? It can't be. Up until the end of their relationship, he's been amazing. It really broke her heart to see him change like that. She just couldn't see how someone she had been so close to, could do such terrible things. Carlton must have noticed her distress because he reached across the table and grabbed her hand.
"Ashley, I can assure you that we are doing everything we can to hopefully find out the truth about Logan. I know you don't want him to turn out to be the killer, but Ashley, you're gonna need to come to terms with it if he is. Especially come to terms with the fact that you might then be in serious danger."
Ashley tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, "Thanks Carlton. I know. It's just…"
"Hard. I know."
Ashley smiled at him. He was really sweet. She knew they'd only known each other for such a short amount of time, but she liked being around him. He was so different from Logan. He was more mature, sweet, and overall kind. Just then Ashley's phone rang. Her and Carlton both froze when they saw Logan's name appear on the screen.
"Answer it Ashley. Tell me everything he says." Carlton instructed.
Hesitantly, Ashley picked up the phone, "Hello?"
"Ashley! I'm sorry ok! I know I've been a total jerk, but these past few weeks without you have been awful. I got one of your friends to tell me you moved back to America, so I'm here! I wanna talk to you Ash'. Please?" Ashley noticed his voice crack at the end. He really did sound desperate.
"I don't know Logan…"
"Please Ash', just… I miss you."
Ashley looked to Carlton, she could tell he heard the conversation so far. She gave him a look as if to say, what should I do? Carlton mouthed to her to say yes.
"Uh, ok Logan."
"Thank you! God Ash' I've missed you! Can we go for a walk along the beach maybe? Tomorrow?"
Ashley looked and saw Carlton nod, he was already on the phone, probably texting Juliet.
"Yes, yeah that's fine Logan."
"Okay, I'll see you tomorrow at 3:00."
"Okay, I'll be there." Ashley was about to hang up but Logan spoke once more into the phone.
"I love you, Ash'."
Ashley didn't say anything. She immediately pressed the call end button. She looked at Carlton, expectantly. She assumed they'd probably give her a wire and have the beach surrounded.
"I just talked to Juliet, we're gonna have the team surround the beach, wait for him to arrive. And you'll be sitting in one of our cars, with a monitor and let us know the second you recognize him."
"Wait, wait? You mean I'm not going to actually talk to him?"
Carlton scoffed, "Absolutely not. It's too dangerous."
"Carlton! We have to get him to talk! There's no way he's gonna be willing to if I don't show up. Please, let me do this. You're gonna have the whole place surrounded anyway! Please, Carlton. I have to do this."
Carlton looked as if he were going to say no again, so she grabbed his hand again, lacing their fingers together and rubbing her thumb over his palm, "I'll be fine. Please."
Carlton ran his other hand through his hair and sighed, "Okay."
Ashley grinned, "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"
"Yeah yeah just… stay safe, or else Spencer will kill me."
Shawn and Juliet were still sitting at her desk. Lassie had just called and given them a small amount of info on Logan. Really it wasn't much to go by, but Juliet was frantically looking through records and old police reports on her computer. Shawn loved watching her work. She got so carried away in it. Her bun was now messy and bits of her hair were falling out of it. She sat really close to the computer screen, one hand on the mouse, her other elbow on top of the desk, her face in her hand. It was like she tuned the rest of the world out. She looked so beautiful. Shawn wanted more than anything to pull her hair out of her bun and run his fingers through it. After a couple of minutes, he figured why not. He slowly reached up and pulled the hair tie out, her blonde waves cascading down her shoulders.
"Shawn! I'm trying to work!" She yelled, turning to face him.
"I'm sorry, I couldn't help it. You're just so cute."
"Knock it off Shawn, we need to to this."
"Jules, we have like no information to go on." Shawn argued, crossing his arms.
"Well maybe if you could sense something or have a vision or something we could actually get somewhere." She said, crossing her arms too.
Shawn mentally cursed, he hated lying to her. He wished he could tell her the truth, but he was in too deep. He really didn't want to mess things up with her. So instead, he just smiled, lying once again.
"You know that's not how the spirits work, Jules."
Just then Juliet's phone lit up with a text message. She looked down, opened it and gasped.
Shawn immediately sat up straight, moving his chair closer to her, "What? What is it?"
"Carlton just said Logan called Ashley again. And he wants to meet her tomorrow at the beach."
"Okay, so what does this mean?"
"It means we'll have the beach surrounded, Ashley will be in a safe location, and she can identify him from the cameras. This is good Shawn, we can catch him and bring him in." Juliet grabbed his hands, "She's gonna be fine."
However, Juliet's phone lit up once again. She opened the message and gave a weary look to Shawn.
"What? What is it?" Shawn squeezed the one hand he was still holding of Juliet's.
"Ashley is insisting on actually meeting with him. Carlton said he told her yes." Juliet put her hand on his face, obviously noticing how upset he was at this. "Shawn. She's going to be fine. We will have the place surrounded. One wrong move and she's out of there."
Shawn calmed a bit at her touch, but still felt really uneasy, "Jules… She's my sister. I can't… I can't let anything happen to her."
"I know Shawn, I know. Nothing is going to happen to her." Juliet assured, calmly.
Shawn just nodded, not having any words. He couldn't believe his sister who he hadn't seen in fourteen years was back in his life, and already in danger.
Juliet stood up, pulling him along with her, "C'mon Shawn, let's go for a walk. You need to get your mind off this."
Shawn again merely nodded, not able to say anything. He let Juliet grab his arm and lead him outside. The fresh air felt nice. He was able to calm down a lot more with Juliet on his arm. But he still did not have a good feeling about tomorrow.
