Chapter Thirteen

He should have felt relief that this spirit wasn't Rylee. But he didn't. It broke his heart even more now. All the nights he heard Rylee cry out or wake up screaming. Her struggles to fight the nightmares each night. Why she refuses to open up to anyone about what's been happening to her.

Now he knew why.

"Twins." It was all he could say. His thoughts were scattered and torn.

"Yes. I'm Olivia. And I need your help." She fizzled out for a second and than came back. It was getting harder to stay complete. Her energy was dissipating, leaving her no matter how hard she tries to hang on to it. "I don't have much time left."

Zak understood. It took a lot out of spirits to make themselves known to the living. Much more was needed to stay in a solid form like Olivia had done. He could see that she was starting to fade and become translucent again. He had to act fast before she faded and he didn't get the chance to talk to her.

He stepped towards her holding out his hand to her. "Here, use my energy. It'll help."

She tilted her head slightly and looked at him. She could feel his body giving off energy, strong energy that would help her out. But it would only drain him and she couldn't do that when something terrible was coming their way. "I couldn't..."

Zak moved closer keeping his hand out to her to touch. "I insist. There must be something really important you need to tell me. You'll need it."

Their eyes met. She could see into them, searching for any reason this was a bad idea. But all she could feel was his kindness. His desire to help those in need. She looked a little deeper.

Love.

Love he had for her sister. "You love her..." It was more of a statement than a question.

Zak nodded.

There was no denying it. The realization that he loved Rylee came to be when he thought she was dead. It explained so much for him. Why he acted like a jerk most of the time. Why he didn't want her to be around the job: he couldn't bare to lose her. He thought if he pushed her away, made her job a little bit harder she would leave. Than she would be safe. He couldn't handle the feelings or his thoughts if something bad was to ever happen to her.

But it only made things worse between them instead. All the arguing and constant bickering about each other. Her anger and pain he saw daily when she walked into a room and saw him. Instead of trying to fix it, he would say something smart to piss her off more.

He regretted it now. Everything he said or did. All the heartache he caused her. If he could take it back and start over he would do things differently. Rylee was a great asset to the team. A kind heart who was willing to help those who needed it. She was a natural at speaking with the victims who were traumatized by their experiences. He witnessed it when they met Jack. She brought something special to the team. The glue to hold everything together.

A small smile reached out and touched Olivia's pale lips. A rush of warmth filled her. His feelings danced around her and tugged at her heart. "Rylee is lucky to have you." She said as she took a step towards him. "My sister..." She closed her eyes for a second and searched for her sister. Even in death she could still feel her. Knew what she was feeling or thinking. It was a bond that was forged long ago when they were just tiny little babies inside their mothers womb. A connection that still holds together. "She loves you too, you know."

Zak sighed softly. If only he could believe that. Why would she when he's been nothing but a jerk to her. Sure, their relationship suddenly changed recently but it's not enough for her to love him too.

Olivia rolled her eyes and shook her head. "I beg the differ." She said, narrowing her eyes slightly. "I may be dead but I'm still connected to my sister. I feel it right here." And placed her hand over her heart.

Zak's eyes fell to her hand as it rested on her chest. Could there be love in Rylee's heart for him? It was something he hoped for. But sadly now was not the time to question it. He watched as her hand began to fade, Olivia was slipping away and all he could think about was himself.

He snapped out of it. "Olivia..." He spoke her name, quickly stepping closer to her. "You're fading... Take my hand. Please. Let me help you."

Olivia reached out and placed her ghostly white hand into his. An electrical current struck them both as she could feel his energy begin to fill her.

Zak gasped as hints to her past invaded his thoughts. Sharp needle like pain pierced his head. Echoes of cries for help slipped through his barriers.

"Sorry." Olivia told him as another tortured memory escaped her.

"Its okay." He said, flinching at the pain she suffered. "It's to be expected."

She closed her eyes for a moment and tried her best to block herself from giving off too much. If she wasn't careful she could over power him with her energy. Her death would be displayed before him. Her torture would spill into him and he would relive it for her. She couldn't let that happen. It was too much for anyone to experience.

"Don't block it." He told her, as her memories began to fade from his mind. "It'll wear you out."

"I don't want to hurt you. I've never done this before, I don't want to cause you pain."

"It's okay. I can take it."

Olivia opened her eyes again and looked at him. She was stable for now. Warmth and love filled her to the max. She shivered. "Thank you." She said.

Zak nodded his welcome, moving in closer to fill the empty space between them. His energy reached out to hers wrapping around her in a web of pure light. "Why are you here?"

"I'm so glad that my voice was heard. I didn't know what else to do to get your attention." She inhaled the air that was not there. "My sister, you must protect my sister."

Pain rippled through him as a flash of memory spears his thoughts. His heart jumped to his throat. The color drained from his face. "What about Rylee?" He forced his words out.

"You need to keep her safe." She shook, sending a wave of emotions to him.

"From what?" He tried to read them but they came in fragments that he couldn't decipher. His world was crashing down and he didn't know why. The warning she gave him weighed heavily down on him. Something was coming, he could feel it from her. But she was hesitant to tell him. "Olivia..." He whispered.

Fear bubbled over and panic struck a chord. If she could cry she would. If she could do this on her own she would. But there wasn't time to gather the strength she needed to defend her sister from the monster who tortured her. She wasn't living, her life ended before she had the chance to live it. And now he was coming after her sister. Finish the job he started.

His face tore through his thoughts. She pushed it through until it was a solid memory planted in his head. "Remember his face." She warned him. "You must remember him."

He could make out this man as if he had seen him himself. As if it was his memory and not one she was sticking in him. "Why? Who is he?"

She was exhausted now. She pushed too hard for him to see what was coming. She became translucent again as she pulled back her hand from his and began to back away. "He murdered me and now he's coming for Rylee."

The last of her words plowed into him as he watched her disappear from sight. The light above his head flickered and came back on and the door clicked and slowly opened. The camera behind him beeped and the green light flashed as it came back on.

His energy was depleted, he felt lightheaded and his stomach flip flopped sinking to the bottom as her last words played over in his head. His knees gave way and he fell to the floor. Deep, shaky breaths filled his aching lungs. His thoughts scattered as he tried to make sense of things but no matter what the mental picture Olivia shown him dominated him.

What was he going to do?

...

While they waited for Zak to fix the camera so they could get the investigation under way, Rylee sat off to the side going over her notes she took. Memorizing all the locations that were presumed haunted. One particular room she couldn't wait to check out. Jack felt uneasy about it and so did she. There was something off about it. She needed to know if there were any lingering spirits hanging out or if her imagination got the best of her when she went to put the X on the floor.

It gave her the creeps nonetheless.

Her stomach dropped and her heart fluttered. Her body tingled, goose bumps covered her arms and the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. Chills traveled the base of her spine sending a cold feeling through her body. She gasped for air, tight knots clamping down making it difficult to breathe. An undeniable, gut wrenching pain stabbed her hard. She grabbed her head as the pulses got stronger. She felt nauseous.

Something was wrong. Something was happening to her. She's never felt pain like this before. It felt like someone was taking a screwdriver and digging it into her skull. She has never experienced a migraine before, she was one of the fortunate ones but if this was one it was crippling her. Sounds around her started fading away leaving only the pulses in her ears. Her vision blurred as her eyes began to water and the tears fell. She broke out in a cold sweat. Damp. Clammy. Body temperature rising and than she began to shiver. Cold icy shivers traveled the course of her body: from the tips of her toes to the very top of her head. Needle like pain as if her skin was frozen and than rapidly began to thaw.

And just like that as fast as the earth shattering pain came it left it's imprint and than it was gone. Her body calmed. The needles went away and the sounds around her returned.

No side effects. Nothing remained.

Rylee sat there gasping for air. It was the strangest thing. One minute experiencing something so horrific that all she wanted to do was go back to her hotel room and shut the world out. She didn't want to be here anymore. Her will to investigate tonight was gone along with her sanity. And now, there was no traces left and she was back to her normal self again.

She looked behind her at the others. They didn't even notice something just happened to her. She opened her mouth to voice there is something weird about this place. Something caused her pain. Something...dark... No words came out. She was left to harbor this to herself.

The black screen on the monitor flickered as the camera came back on.
