Graham was driving back towards the station when he received a frantic call on the radio, "Sheriff! Sheriff! Incoming! I think I got that Ritchie fella. He's round back at the old cannery."
Graham grabbed the radio, "Deputy Eric, keep an eye on him but do not approach. I repeat do NOT approach. I am on my way. In the mean time page the station let everyone know and if any others are in the area have them come and bring their weapons. No one is to approach him, he is armed and dangerous."
Graham raced to the cannery. When the cannery was in sight he turn off the headlights to high patrol car. In the distance he could see Eric's patrol car sitting just up the road. He slowly made his way towards the car. Just as he was closing in on the last couple hundred feet, he saw something was off. The car was facing the wrong way. As Graham approached the cars headlights suddenly turned on.
Graham stopped a few feet from the Eric's car. As he stopped he slowly got out of the car with his hands up. With the new angle Graham could see Eric in the drivers seat with a gun pointed at his head. Graham cursed to himself.
Graham watched as Ritchie turned to Eric and gave him instructions. Eric slowly moved his hand to his waist were he took his own cuffs off his utility belt and handed them to Ritchie.
Ritchie opened one of the cuffs and placed it on Eric's wrist. Eric was then turning to face the door. Ritchie smirked and opened the passenger side door. Ritchie pointed the gun at Graham, "You know no offense sheriff, but your deputies are damn idiots."
Graham swallowed, "What do you want?"
Ritchie chuckled, "Me, oh I just want start a second chance." Ritchie then chuckled, "I want that little fuck Avery to suffer. He thinks he can just steal from me. Hell no. He needed to know his place. I think he got the message. Don't you?"
Graham was chilled to his core. Ritchie started at Graham with that half smirk and cold eyes.
Graham nodded, "Ok. Well you showed Avery his place. He's not going to bother you."
Ritchie coldly laughed, "Oh it's not Avery I'm worried about. It's that mayor bitch. She's a liability. She care's about that kid too much, now that the brat is dead she's gonna be gunning for someone."
Graham swallowed his fear and looked Ritchie in the eyes, "The girl, Emma, she's fine. She's in the hospital. She's going to be fine. Regina, the mayor, she's going to be more focused on getting Emma better than going after you."
In the distance he could feel something moving, he couldn't tell if it was a animal or hopefully some backup.
Graham decided to keep Ritchie's attention on him with the hopes that backup was quickly approaching. "Look I don't really care what you do after tonight. I just want you gone from this town without any more death and without anyone else getting hurt."
Ritchie looked at Graham and could see the truth in the sheriff's eyes. Ritchie smirked and cocked the gun pointed directly at Graham, "That's not very nice. You should care about people Sheriff."
As Ritchie moved to pull the trigger a shot rang out. Graham dropped to the ground as fast as he could hopefully fast enough to dodge a bullet.
After a moment there was silence.
Graham looked up and could see a body on the ground. Graham quickly stood and ran towards where Ritchie was just standing. Graham kicked the gun that he saw near Ritchie's hand away towards his own cruiser. Graham looked down and could see the wound from a rifle in Ritchie's shoulder.
Graham grabbed the cuffs from his utility belt and cuffed Ritchie. He checked his pulse and sighed in relief when he found one. Ritchie would stand trial for what he did to Emma and what he's done to other people.
Graham looked up and could see Deputy Mulan walking towards them. Mulan nodded her head and went to Eric's cruiser and un-cuffed him.
Eric sprang from the car and took a few deep breaths. Mulan placed a comforting hand on Eric's back. "You did good Eric. The situation wasn't good, you did what you could. Radioing us to come from the back saved the sheriff. It was good work."
Graham directed Mulan to call it in and get a ambulance here to take Ritchie away, and to call the feds since they would most likely be handling the prosecution of the case.
The scene was processed and statements were given at the station. As soon as Graham was done for the night he went directly to the hospital to let Regina, Avery, and Emma know the good news.
Graham entered the hospital with tired eyes and five o'clock shadow. Graham found Emma's room and saw Regina and Avery huddled around Emma's bed. Regina and Avery were looking intensely at each other and Graham kind of felt like he was interrupting but felt this was a warranted time to do so, "I got him. I got him. Well actually Mulan got him, but he's here at the hospital in surgery. He's in custody and the feds are on their way to take him."
Regina's eyes widened and Avery let out a sigh of relief. Graham looked at Emma and took a step, "Has she… Is she?"
Regina bit her lip and turned her attention back to Emma, "She still hasn't woken up but she's getting better. She will. She'll wake up soon."
Graham deflated slightly, he figured Emma would be up and greeting him with that bright smile. Graham nodded and pointed at the door, "I'm gonna umm… head out. Give you guys some privacy."
Regina stood and made her way to Graham. Before Graham could say Regina, Regina had her arms around his waist saying thank you. Graham returned the hug, "Of course. I would do anything for Emma. So would the rest of the sheriff's department. Hell this town would do anything for Emma."
Regina smiled and looked back at a unconscious Emma. Regina sighed and looked back at Graham, "Go home Sheriff. You've done more than enough. Get some rest."
Graham nodded, "Ok, Is Henry still here? I can drop him at home on my way."
Regina shook her head, "No I had Ruby take him home and she's going to stay the night with him."
Graham nodded, "Call me if you need anything Regina."
Regina nodded, "Thank you Graham."
Graham gave Avery one last look before he walked out of Emma's room and headed home.
Regina and Avery were told that there was nothing medically wrong with Emma. She's recovered well and they don't see any signs of secondary drowning. Emma should be waking soon.
Avery had gone home to shower and get a few hours of sleep. Sleeping in the hospital chairs resulted in neither Avery or Regina being well rested. Regina understandably took the day off to stay at the hospital with Emma.
That afternoon while Regina was talking to Emma Henry appeared in the doorway. Regina smiled at her teenage son, trying to reassure him that Emma was going to be fine.
"How did you get here Henry?" Regina asked.
Henry entered the room and handed Regina a bag, "After school I went to Granny's and asked Ruby to give me a ride. She was doing delivery's anyway". Regina nodded then looked curiously at the bag he handed her.
Henry took a seat in Avery's vacated seat and took Emma's hand, "I figured you weren't going to be convinced to leave the hospital to shower or change clothes. I figured you would want to wear something more comfortable."
Regina smiled at his foresight and thoughtfulness, "Thank you my little prince. You're right I would really like to freshen up. I just.. I can't leave her without someone being with her. I don't want her to wake up and be alone."
Henry nodded, "I know mom. Don't worry. I'm here, you can go change."
Regina stood and took the bag. Regina placed a kiss on Henry's head. Henry smiled not even embarrassed that his mom kissed his head in public.
Regina closed the bathroom door and looked at herself in the mirror. She could see how tired she looked. It's going to take multiple good night sleeps, and maybe some eye serum to fix those bags under her eyes.
Regina turned on the hot water and washed up before she changed into the clothes Henry brought her.
Regina was re-applying her makeup when she heard Henry, "Mom! Mom! Come quick!"
Regina dropped all of her things into the sink and swung the door open frantically. Regina rushed over to Emma's bed where Henry was leaning over Emma.
Regina looked at Henry, "What is it? What happened?"
Henry smiled, "She groaned and started fluttering her eyes. I think she's trying to wake up."
Regina looked at Emma and could see the fluttering lashes. Regina cupped Emma's face in her hands and rubbed her thumbs on Emma's cheeks, "Come on sweetheart. I know you're scared but it's ok. Mommy's here and so is Henry. We're here. Come on baby, I know you can do it. Let Mommy see those pretty green eyes."
Emma fluttered her eyes and slowly opened her eyes. Regina sobbed and kissed Emma's cheek, "Oh baby, My baby."
Emma opened her mouth but no sound came out. Henry quickly grabbed the cup and a straw for Emma, while Regina pushed the nurses button.
Henry held the cup and straw for Emma while she took a gulp of water. Regina keep stroking her face and hair.
When the nurses entered they all smiled and paged the doctor, "Emma, it's so good to see you awake!"
Emma gave a small smile. The nurses went up to Emma's bed to check her vitals. Henry took a step back to give them more room to work. Regina tried to step back but Emma whined out and held her hand out.
Regina immediately stepped back and took Emma's hand. Emma croaked, "No leave."
Regina kissed Emma's hand then her head, "I'm not going anywhere. I promise Em."
The doctor then entered the room and did his assessment smiling, "Well Emma it seems you are going to be just fine."
Regina let the last bit of tension she was holding in her shoulders loose.
The nurses and the doctor left the room promising to be back to check in again and to make sure Emma ate.
Henry sat next to Emma and gave her a hug, "I'm really glad you're ok Em. You really scared us."
Emma hugged her brother and said, "I was scared too. But I knew Mommy and you and Graham, was gonna get me back."
Regina placed a kiss on Emma's head, "Of course, nothing would have stopped us from finding you."
Henry took a seat back in the chair and grabbed his book to read Emma pages from his story book. Regina was about to sit in the other chair when Emma grabbed her and held her shirt in a tight grasp.
Regina looked at the fear in Emma's eyes. Regina then sat on the bed and Emma scooted over making room for her Mommy.
Regina leant back against the pillows and pulled Emma into her side. Emma snuggled into her Mommy.
Henry could see that his mom and Emma needed a moment, so he stood and pointed to the hallway, "I'm just going to call Avery. Let him know to come to the hospital when he can since Em is awake."
Regina nodded and mentally chastised herself for forgetting to call Avery.
When Henry exited the room Regina looked down at Emma, "Sweetheart, you are right here in my arms. I'm not letting anything happen to you?"
Emma nodded, "I missed you Mommy."
Regina held Emma even tighter, "I missed you so much baby. So so much. I don't want to ever go another day without a Emma hug. And I think to make up for the ones we missing we are just going to have to double up everyday to get back even."
Emma nodded and tucked closer to Regina, "I love you Mommy."
Regina held Emma and kissed her head repeatedly, "I love you so so so much Emma. You and Henry are my world."
Regina and Emma kept the tight embrace, vowing to double up on hugs.
Avery was sleeping when is phone rang. He quickly jumped awake and grabbed the phone.
"H-Hello?" Avery croaked.
Henry voice rang through the phone, "Avery! She's awake! She woke up!"
Avery pulled the phone away from his ear and held it tightly in his hand as he tried to quietly let out a relieved sob.
Henry could hear the muffled sound and knew Avery was trying to be quiet as his emotions got the better of him.
Henry stayed on the line silently while Avery let his emotions wash over him. When Avery returned to the phone he said, "I'll be right there."
Henry hummed, "We'll be here."
When Avery came running around the corner he saw Henry sitting in the chair, while Regina was curled up in the bed asleep with Emma in her arms. Avery enter the room and smiled at the sight. Avery sat in Regina's vacated chair and watched the duo rest.
Henry put his book down and looked at Avery, "They've been out about 20 minutes. Mom will probably sleep a while but Emma will probably be up in a few minutes."
Avery nodded, "I just can't wait to see her open her eyes."
Henry smiled, "I heard about what you did to save Emma. It was really brave, jumping off the waterfall."
Avery waved the praise off, "It was nothing. We used to jump that waterfall as kids. I'd do it again in a heartbeat to save her. I'd do anything to save her."
Henry nodded understanding the feeling, "Well thanks anyway for saving her. For saving my sister."
Avery gave a small smile leant back against the chair back, as he continued to wait for Emma to wake up. "So how's school?"
Emma woke first, she was warm and felt safe. As she blinked her eyes into focus she could see her Mommy holding her even in her sleep. Emma then turned her head and saw Henry and gave a small wave.
Henry waved back and then pointed to the other chair. Emma turned her head and lifted her head, "Avery!"
Avery stood and leant over the bed and placed a long kiss to Emma's head, "Hey kid. I miss you so much."
Emma sat up from her embrace with Regina and wrapped her arms around Avery's neck, "I missed'd you too."
Regina felt the movement and opened her eyes. Her heart warmed as she saw Emma and Avery embracing. Avery really was a good person and a good father for Emma.
When they pulled away Regina placed a hand on Emma's back and rubbed.
Emma looked at her Mommy and beamed. Emma was safe and with her family.
