Author's Notes: Like I promised, here is the epilogue. Essentially, the start to my super heroes. :) Immortal and D, thanks for the support. "Gravitation" and "Vantage" are very short works ('round five chapters each), so...I may get to them soon-ish. Can't give a date like my TMNT works, though. Again, THANK YOU!
Disclaimer: Ultimate Spider-Man is not mine. Nor are any of its characters. That's Marvel's job. Any Original Characters and art you note, however, are all me. No. I'm not making money. Don't rub it in.
Epilogue
It's been two weeks since my move to the SHIELD base in Charlotte, two weeks since my true start in the SHIELD Training Program. I guess it goes without saying that I still find it rather sublime. After all, I'm now an agent for the very organization that caused so many problems with my family. And arrested me.
In a way, they've—and by 'they've', I mean 'Fury'—has been eager to make amends. My father was transferred along with me, and my request to train with Danny and Strange was approved. The meetings aren't as often as I would like, but…at least I get to see him.
Er, them. Get to see them. I hang with the others while I'm in New York, too. Anyways.
Enderlin feels long in the past, like a distant dream, though three months isn't so long in hindsight. None of Jessica Collier's prisoners chose to return there. Some didn't survive. Those that did can no longer face the place. I wonder who is left. Somehow, I get the feeling it's a ghost town now—regardless of how many remained…
"Oh, gee, I swear you think way too much, Z!"
Zeelan glanced up and blinked at a blonde Asian that sent her a teasing smile. He laughed when she finally remembered they were in a SHIELD jet, preparing for a training exercise outside of Charlotte, and the action raised the gold feathers along his body. Two other chuckles sounded over the jet's roar, drawing Z's attention to a scaly redhead and a fair-skinned brunette across the small hold where the seats were located. Only the black-haired grump on the blonde's side rolled his severe, dark eyes.
"As leader, I find it poor form for a subordinate to grow lost in thought," the Asian continued with a cheeky smile. "You'll get yourself hurt like that."
"Sorry, Kai," Zeelan responded. His face neared a little too close—as normal—so she eased away the best possible while in a harness.
Kai Snyder. Also known as Harpy because of his avian mutation. Strange as it may seem, he's a skilled flyer with tact skills of a genius that he hides behind a goofy persona. His interests lay in riling reactions out of people and, it didn't surprise me when he announced his admittance into the SHIELD Training Program. Once Kevin's right-hand man, he's now the leader of our SHIELD group.
"Hey, I'm leader, too!" the brunette intervened. He tried to keep his strong features even, only they melted into a large smile when Kai stuck his tongue out at him. Not that the unruly, upturned locks of brown hair that stuck out from beneath his four-inch headband meant he could look serious anyway.
Sean Daniels. We call him Tremor for his Seismic Sense and Vibration Manipulation. He and Kai have been best friends since before kindergarten and the playfulness of any environment rises when they're together. He's one of the first to have recovered from Collier's labs. Then again, he was a recent addition to her roster, next to Alice. And not a favorite because his mutation wasn't animalistic.
"Having two leaders seems strange," noted the redhead with a tap against her short chin. "Then again…since you two basically share a brain, it's like one leader in two forms."
Thera Moore. Fin. The heart of our team, who can breathe underwater and secrete venom from her pores. She's always been a very compassionate person, not one for fighting. Yet she's joined our team anyway. She told me she wants to grow stronger this way, so she wouldn't be as helpless in aiding others as she felt when Kevin kidnapped Sam. I thought for sure she would sit on the sidelines, waiting for a means of reverse for her Lionfish mutation. Seems everyone is full of surprises nowadays.
"Please, you put those two together and maybe, maybe, you get a full brain."
Ugh. The only team member not from Dakota. Also known as Virus. And, boy, does he feel like one. While everyone else's auras are chipper and calm, his resembled a pit of black and gray—like a black hole in danger of capturing any soul. Even the others, who lack Radiesthesia, have noticed the darkness in his Middle Eastern features.
But, I guess it's to be expected; he was the test dummy for Collier's work. A human that now possessed the unnatural ability of Cyberkinesis. It wasn't a painless process, for sure, and he refuses to speak of his past, claiming his name is Reality Hacks. Sure. What woman gave that name to their kid?
Unless she was related to Doctor Strange's mother…
"Hey, we do too have a brain!" Sean and Kai explained in unison. They glanced at other another then faced the surly Reality. "We can't help it if we think alike."
"Kids, your drop-off is coming up, so prepare for flight!" With a harsh click, the PA system grew silent again.
"Guess this is our cue," Kai said as he unbuckled his harness.
Zeelan nodded, feeling just an ounce of anxiety and anticipation as she did likewise.
Oh, do we get to fly?
"Don't overdo it," the mutant whispered while glaring at her belt.
Kai sent her a strange look then smirked. "Oh, I can handle holding two people, if you only want to risk one."
"Risk?" Thera squeaked, standing beside Kai. "I thought you said you've gotten better at flying, Z."
"I did. It's just that—"
"No one's going to bother with two; I can fly on my own," Reality interjected with a sneer. He stood at the edge of group, like they had contracted some sort of dreaded disease, and cracked his neck. From his jet pack, a pair of mechanical wings formed. Oh, Z had already forgotten he designed the pack with such intents in mind.
"Fine by me," Kai said, near a pout.
"God, your accents are so weird," Reality mumbled.
The four Dakotans exchanged glances then Sean added, "Hogwash, we have no accents. You're the one talking like an Indian Guru."
"I'm not Indian."
"Well, what are you then?"
Swoosh! Zeelan was pushed back by the sudden air of the opening hanger at the group's feet. It rung, loud, in her ears and her boots skid back a good foot before her stance steeled. Thankful her mask shielded her eyes, she took hold of Thera's webbed hand, knowing well Kai had already done the same with Sean. Speechless in the cool windstorm, a drum pounded in Z's chest as she waited for the pilot's voice to mark their cue.
"Go!"
The group jumped without hesitation. Yes, the belt enjoyed that very much.
Oh, Kevin, I wish you were here. You're the reason I'm even doing this. My brother, my inspiration. I want to be as helpful and kind as you were when we were younger. You're still capable of such, I know it. So I won't give up on you. I won't ever do that…
For now, I'll focus on this new mission. The journey to it was rough, and there were times where I thought I'd be lost to the wayside forever. But I had people help lead me back, people who I will never forget. With them. I did it. I finally did it.
I found my path.
