"I want to start a family." Cas said one night at dinner. Both Cas and Dean sat opposite each other and Cas watched him intently.
Regretting it immediately, Cas clapped his hand over his mouth. He had been thinking about their future a lot lately. He didn't know what Dean had planned, all he knew was he wanted to be with him for eternity. Cas tossed and turned in bed for many nights, wondering how he should tell Dean.
Dean sighed and tilted his head, looking at his mashed potatoes and steak. The utensils clinked against the plate as he laid them down, all parallel to each other.
"I want… To start a family." Cas whispered again. Dean just stared at the tablecloth, running his fingertips over the plaid pattern. Cas felt as if he had to explain himself.
"I want to start a family. I know you don't think you're good with kids but look at your beautiful nephews! And I know we aren't exactly the ideal family in everyone's eyes and we aren't married but I think we'd be good paren-"
"Then let's get married." Dean interrupted. "Let's get married and I want to have as many kids as you want. We can have a big family in this little house. Or we could get a bigger house." He stood up and walked into the kitchen. Cas heard him rummage through drawers, talking about children, grandchildren, and other future plans.
When he entered through the threshold, he walked around to Castiel's side of the table, kneeling down on one knee. He took one of Cas's hands in his, rough and smooth fingers intertwined together.
"Castiel Novak. I can't think of anything I want to do more right now that ask for you to be with me. With me through thick and thin, sickness and health and all that shit. I don't do chick flick moments, but I'll do them for you." Cas blinked through the tears that clouded his eyes. Dean opened his mouth to ask the question, but Cas cut him off with a bear hug, nestling his head into Dean's shoulder.
"I take that as a yes?" Dean chuckled, wrapping his arms around his middle. Cas nodded and pulled back to look at his fiance. Dean reached up to wipe a tear away from Cas's cheek and he felt his cheeks flush with warmth.
Dean's rough palm reached for Cas's finger and he started fitting a zip tie around his ring finger, tugging the end so it was nice and comfortable.
Cas threw his arms around Dean's neck, hugging him desperately.
"You're gonna make a great parent" Cas said every night from then on even though Dean wasn't thoroughly convinced.
We had our entire life planned out. Castiel thought as he tugged on the parking brake. He stepped out of the car and embraced the wind chill with a bouquet of flowers.
Even though he knew the wind would eventually blow it around, he adjusted his tie and pulled his trench coat tighter. He started to walk up the all too familiar hillside, following the beaten path. Just as he passed over a slight slope, he started walking onto the grass, still fresh with rain from that morning.
Eventually he made it to the all too familiar slab of stone embedded into the ground.
Dean Winchester
1979-2013
"Hello, Dean." Cas started, trying to get past the lump in his throat. He shuffled in front of the gravesite, passing the flowers into his other hand.
"It was Henry's birthday a few days ago. He and Bobby John have grown so much. And school is starting soon..." Cas rolled his head to one side and took another long shaky breath. "Bobby John is learning how to play the trumpet. Causing quite a racket in that little house." He chuckled, thinking of his visit to Sam and his family last week. Bobby John blasted out as many notes as he could, while Cas patiently listened to each screeching melody.
"I miss you, Dean." A tear rolled down his cheek but he forgot to wipe it away. "I miss you everyday. Sam misses you, and so does Jess. When last talked to Bobby he said his new employee doesn't do good work, like you did. Benny and I go out every Sunday still though. Sometimes we play pool, sometimes he just gets really drunk and doesn't talk much."
Cas looked down the line at the gravesites. A few graves down, one tombstone stood tall with decaying flowers. The petals wilted on the grass, and the stems started twisting with the wind.
"Give me a moment." Cas held up a finger to Dean's stone.
Slowly, he walked over and looked at the flowers. They were stood up in a vase and were holding down a homemade card with a child's handwriting scribbled all over. I love you, mommy! Cas pulled out a red rose from his hand and laid it on Gertrude Middleton's grave, hoping someone was going to come to replace the flowers.
Cas returned to Dean's plot, and stared at the green grass as the minutes passed.
"I wish I could just reset. Everything would be back to normal, and I could wake up next to you." Cas tightened his grasp on the flowers wrapped up in plastic. "These are for you." He said, laying them down next to Dean's name. He picked up his old flowers from last week and tucked them in his arm.
"I'm going to the adoption agency tomorrow morning." Cas felt his chest flutter and tighten. He couldn't decide whether that feeling was excitement or anxiety. "I'll let you know how it turns out."
"I won't forget you, I promise." Cas whispered as he faced the wind chill which was pushing him back toward Dean.
"Goodnight. I'll see you next week."
