So this is a re-edited story,
Previously called 'You're Not Alone!'
So hopefully this version is a lot smoother
Than the last one.
It's really short- I promise not all the chapters will be like this
they will be longer, this is just the prologue anyway
and they aren't normally long.
Anyway
Disclaimer: I do not own Fairy Tail
Enjoy!

"Papa? Is Mama going to be okay?" The little girl looked at her mother as she laid still in her bed. The little girls head turned to stare at him when he didn't answer, "She will be okay, right? Mama's really strong, she told me so." Her father did look away from her mother's face, his large, rough hands from years of work were clutching to her mother's tightly. Again, he didn't answer and she didn't ask again, instead favoring the silence that sat between the three of them.
Was her mother going to die?
The little girl couldn't even think of such a thing happening, her mother was a strong person and would pull through, she always did. She looked down at the tight necklace around her neck, her mother had always loved the stars- maybe that was where her love for them sprouted, one day her mother bought her a necklace with the little girls zodiac sign on it. Her mother always told her that she was brave like the lion her symbol represented. Although in this moment, Lucy didn't feel like the brave little girl her mother knew.
Her father nodded slowly, eyes never leaving the bed his wife was on, watching as the doctor checked her over. "Yes, your mother is strong Lucy, believe in her." She didn't like the uncertainty in her father's eyes as he squeezed her hand, why didn't he look honest? Her mother would survive, wouldn't she? "We will get through this."
Why was he lying?
She knew he was lying the moment he looked her in the eye, the doubt and uncertainty in her father's eyes was just too much to allow any raw belief to show. Just fear. It was as if he knew just what the doctor's next visit would mean. It was like he knew that Layla would die and she would no longer have a mother to keep reality away from her.
"You can't just- say that."
"I'm sorry Mr. Heartfilia but I can no longer provide any treatment for her."
"You can't just leave my wife like this!" Her father cried out. "Please, isn't there anything you can do? I will pay you enough to last your whole life without working!"
"Mr. Heartfilia, I apologize but that technology is far too advanced for a town such as ours, you would need to go to a whole other city-country even to even-!"
"Money is of no object if it means I can save my wife!"
"That is not the problem here-!"
"Papa?" Lucy rubbed at her eyes tiredly, one hand clenching the necklace her mother gave her. Her eyes travelled to her mother's doctor, "what's wrong? Is Mama okay?" Her father looked at her doctor for a moment before twisting his face into a sneer.
"I do not care. She will live." He grit out through a clenched jaw before storming out Layla's room in a flurry, leaving his daughter and the doctor behind.
"Papa?" The little girl looked at the wooden door that was ajar, her face conflicted. Should she go? Her mother always said not to bother her father when he was like this.
"Lucy dear," she turned her head to the doctor watching as he knelt before her so he could look her in the eye. "I think its best you leave your father alone for a bit, let him cool off, okay?" He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, "he's having a rough time that father of yours. He needs a moment to himself."
"What's wrong with Papa?"
The doctor seemed to hesitate. "I think that should be left up to your father to tell you." The doctor stood and grabbed his briefcase before glancing down at the blonde, his dark eyes mirroring that of affection as he patted her head. "You take care and be a good girl for your daddy, okay Lucy?" She smiled and nodded, her eyes following him as he walked out the room.
"Thank you for helping my Mama!" She called.
The doctor paused a moment in the doorway, the candle light flickering, hiding his face from view. "Your appreciation is pointless little lady, save that for a time when you really need it." And then he left her.
It was such a strange moment for her at the time, nothing the doctor said seemed of any importance, her father got in moods frequently but he meant no harm and she truly was grateful for all the doctor did. After all, the man did help make her mother feel better, and finally they could all be happy again. But now, she saw the significance in his words for it was only a month later did she see the end to the precious world her mother made.
The rain was violent and the winds chilling her to the bone as she stood beside her father, the words of the priest were flying past her and only the sound of the wind whipping by her present in her mind. It had been a month since the doctor came to see them, not even a phone call as exchanged. Lately her father had become extremely busy; he seemed to always be on the phone with someone or making trips places while she was left with her mother and the servants.
Now she saw what he had been doing all that time. Her father had busied himself with work, trying to find any way to help save his wife, the multiple trips he took her on were to visit the doctors across the state and sometimes even the country, the multiple phone calls were from those doctors who had all refused to work on her mother. As a result, Layla Heartfilia died and Lucy herself was now without a mother present in her life. Maybe the healing process wouldn't have been so hard had her father ever been the one to help cover the scars.
Jude buried himself further into his work, although none of it involved any medical examiners or doctors he was just as dedicated to it as he had been when Layla was alive. Lucy would often peek through his office doors and see him stare out the window behind his desk with a cup of scotch in his hand. She remembered how lonely he always looked, like he was missing a piece of himself. It saddened her to know that despite her being there, a gift her mother had left him, and yet she could do nothing to ease the pain in his heart. She decided to make him a snack the next day, on her ninth birthday.
She learned to never bother Daddy during work again.
He had been calm in the beginning, seemingly uninterested but Lucy had reassured herself he was just trying to put up a brave front. Although that was not the case as she persisted that he must eat, now the little girl hadn't been the best at cooking-and she had asked to do it on her own so her rice balls had turned to a more firm feeling than they should had been. Although it wasn't until her father slapped her and threw the food at her face did Lucy fully realize how terrible a cook she is. So a few months later, she tried again.
Her father had begun to drink the night away and quite often she could hear glass breaking in the night as her father threw a bottle at the wall. Lucy noticed that there had been a drop in workers in her mansion, some of the staff she had come to feel comfortable around had left them, claiming they did not enjoy their time working there. It was a lie and she knew, they always had a smile on their faces and never complained once. They just didn't enjoy the new Jude Heartfilia they worked for.
Soon, Lucy found herself alone with only her father around to keep her company, but even then he did not speak to her much but when they did Lucy always found herself wondering if she would be happy staying there and although she chose to stay with her father and help him through his mourning, her life took a turn for the worse the day her father hit her. The first time he had ever laid a hand on her-she could still remember the pure fury in her fathers eyes when he struck her and then he left, not a word spoken to her. She just wanted to talk about her mother.
She had been fearful that night, hadn't been able to sleep at all and when it became two in the morning Lucy decided to pack her bags and make an escape, she had someone she could ask for help, someone her mother knew well and was close enough with to call family. She knew them all and loved them, of course she wouldn't depend on them long-only a few years until she can provide a stable life for herself, then she would leave and start her life fresh. A new look, a new location, a new name and a completely new signature that would dismiss her life before she became a runaway.
