Hello. This is the translation of a friend's poem, a last act for Shakespeare's tempest. As my friend, I am a native speaker of german, but I hope the translation is readable for you. It has been originally published on , but there are not many users interested in Shakespeare. Maybe wi will get some more reviews here? Thank you.
Act 6, Scene I
The island, a ship landing in a quiet bay. PROSPERO stands in the bows, is very pale. FERDINAND comes along.
FERDINAND
For four years we have planed to go,
Always thy doctor told us 'no'.
For traveling he just saw red,
He thought thou hadst to lie in bed.
Now we are here, dost thou feel better?
PROSPERO
Yes. It's the air, the wind, the weather
I have been absent for too long,
I think, for centuries I was gone.
FERDINAND
We all need freetime for a while,
For weeks now there's a little smile
On Miranda's lovely face.
Since thou got ill, there was no space
For such signs of happieness and youth.
I think that she deserves the truth.
PROSPERO
Everything thou seest is real,
But lies and traitory dost thou feel?
FERDINAND
Last time the doctor was too shy
He did not look me in the eye.
PROSPERO
Sighing
Thou art right, I can not live much longer.
FERDINAND
Thy wish for honesty should be stronger.
PROSPERO
I want to talk, I want to tell
But, as thou saidst, she feels so well.
VALERIA runs ashore, MIRANDA follows.
MIRANDA
Valeria, stand still, I plead.
VALERIA
But mother, this is where the seed
Of love for thee began to grow.
Eight years from now, eight years ago,
Thou realized thou lovest my dad.
MIRANDA
Then I will show thee where we met.
Back to the boat
Let's meet, beloved Ferdinand,
Where I asked thee to take my hand.
VALERIA exits, MIRANDA follows. FERDINAND and PROSPERO leave the ship.
FERDINAND
Please tell me, father, can I help thee?
PROSPERO
Yes, son, I want thy company.
To Caliban I have to go,
I hope that he will, even though
I gave him freedom, debts are paid,
I hope that he will tolerate
That thou mighst feel the wish one morn'
To return to where your love was born.
FERDINAND
And then we'll make Miranda cry,
We have to tell her thou wilt die
Exit.
Scene II
In front of Prospero's cell. PROSPERO sits on a rock, MIRANDA kneels next to him, so does FERDINAND. They talk.
ARIEL enters, invisible.
ARIEL
Aside
Master Prospero is back,
But why do I still feel a lack
Of luck? So ill he seems to me,
I think at home he'd better be.
My memories go to former times
When I suffered from the witches crimes.
From Sycorax, he made me free,
Instead my master became he.
He told me things I ought to try,
My wish to help I did deny.
He left the island, me, and hence
My life seems to have lost its sense.
MIRANDA
In a shaking voice
Father, do not die, beware!
PROSPERO
Miranda, please, be calm, my heir.
We will meet again one day,
That gives me strength to go away.
Dies. MIRANDA bursts into tears, FERDINAND calms her. PROSPERO'S GHOST rises.
ARIEL
Becoming visible for him
I greet thou, master Prospero,
That thou art here, I'm glad to know.
PROSPERO
Ariel, don't call me master.
I should have realized this faster
Thou earnst deep respect, thou art brave,
Instead I called thee servant, slave.
Friend, use no title, just my name.
ARIEL
I was no good servant, that's a shame.
PROSPERO
Thou canst imagine how I missed thee.
ARIEL
I was afraid thou wouldst forget me.
PROSPERO
Tell me, how could I forget the noblest creature I've ever met?
Teach me on a bat's back flying,
Let in a cowslip's bell me lying.
I can live now merrily,
Because finally I'm free.
