Chapter 12
By Wednesday morning Donatello was woken up by a small knock on his door.
Rubbing the sleep out of his eyes he called out "c-come in" Donatello cringed at the sound of his own voice. Clearing his throat Donnie looked up to see the blurry outline of his father in the doorway.
"Good morning my son. How are you feeling today?" Yoshi asked walking towards his second youngest son and sitting down on the side of his bed.
"Asa... Hai Otosan I'm fine" Donatello flashed him a gap-toothed smile as thanks (Morning...Yes Father).
Yoshi watched as his son continued to rub his eyes and squint up at him. Reaching over towards the nightstand he picked up the glasses that were resting apon it.
"T-thanks" Donatello replied while taking the glasses from his father and putting them on his face.
Smiling at his son Yoshi lifted the back of his hand up to rest it on his son's forehead "Hmm… still a little warm, but you do look better. What about your lungs? Does your chest still feel tight?"
"Only a little…"
"I see… well, I think you should stay home again, maybe tomorrow you'll be well enough to go back to school."
"Hai, thank you Otosan."
"Your welcome my son now gets some rest. I'll go call it in." Yoshi stood up and turn towards the door where he sees his oldest son standing there carry a tray of food. "Asa Leonardo."
"Ohayogozaimasu Otosan," Leo greets his father before walking into the room he shared with his younger brother "Hey Don, how are you feeling?"
"Better. Otosan thinks I should be back to school tomorrow." Donatello smiled, happy to hear that he could finally leave his room. Being trapped in here was starting to make him go stir crazy.
"Huh only someone like you would be excited to go back to school" Raph smirked as he walked past the door to his room most likely to get ready for school himself.
"Well what did you guys excepted, I've been stuck in here for 4 days now" Donnie pouted crossing his arms over his chest.
"You and I both know that was your own fault, Donnie. If you had just rested and followed Otosan's orders you wouldn't have gotten worse after you stupidly worked in that drafty old garage all Saturday night!"
"That's not a word" was the only response gave as he sunk further into his blankets.
Yoshi smiled at his second youngest son's childish actions "Very well my son but I do still expect you to rest today and I will be in later to check on you." As Donatello nodded his response Yoshi turned to the door and made his way to the kitchen to call the school.
"Hai, Otosan I will."
"Here I brought you some soup," Leo said holding up the tray in his hands.
Donnie eyed the soup cautiously knowing full well that if Leo had made THAT there was no way in shell he was going to eat it. No offense to his eldest brother but he couldn't cook to save his life. His brother either burned everything he tried to make or made it more revolving then Mikey's P Shake? Or that pickled jelly bean and sardine pizza...EW! no, thank you.
Leo took one look at his brother's disgusted face and laughed "relax Donnie, I didn't make it Raph did."
"Raph...?" taking the pre offered soup from his brother and setting it down on his lap with a thanks.
"Ya, I was surprised too," Leo said moving over towards his bed and started packing up his books he would need for the day.
Raph hardly ever cooked and when he did it was only as an apology or a special occasion. Donnie thought about that as he ate his Tomato soup it was good too, leave it to Raph to make his favorite soup and from scratch no less.
…
Later that afternoon April had returned to the Hamato's household in order to see her friend and to deliver his homework to him like she has been for the last three days. Raising her hand up she knocked on Donatello's door and waited, after a few seconds she heard a low groaned "Yes?" was her answer. She decides to open the door and seeing her friend slowly raising from his bed and rubbing his eyes. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were sleeping. I can go?"
"Huh…O-oh no, it's okay Ap-April…" he finished with a yawn reaching for something on his desk to picked up a pair of black-rimmed glasses. April looked at him with confusion.
"…What? Is something wrong?" he asked slightly paniced.
"No it's nothing it's just I didn't realize you wore glasses?"
"Oh," Donnie said touching the edge of his glasses, "ah ya I've had them for a couple of years now, but I just prefer to wear my contacts."
"Whys that?"
"…Really? I'm a 13-year-old, lanky science nerd in a 10th-grade class. Do you really think that adding glasses into that mix is going to help me?"
"…no, I guess not."
"Hence the contacts" Donnie smiled causing April to smile with him.
"So seeing as you weren't at school today I take it that you're not over that nasty cold of yours?" April asked.
Another yawn escaped his mouth as he answered: "No...but my fever finally broke this afternoon and Otosan says I should be back to school tomorrow if not the next day."
"Well, that's great!"
"Tell me about it, another day in this bed and I was going to lose my mind."
"Well if you had just stand in bed like you were supposed to and not gone wandering off to your ...Lab? you would have been back days ago."
"What! How did you find out about that?!" Donnie's eyes widened in panic and checks blushed in embarrassment at the same time.
"Leo told me" she shrugged though she couldn't hide the slight smirk on her face.
"Great..." he mumbled crossing his arms over his chest blush only growing stronger.
"Hey don't worry about it I'm just happy your feeling better."
"Ya I am, and thanks by the way... for droping off my books I mean. I know its out of your way..." Donnie said rubbing the back of his neck sheepisly.
"Hey don't sweat it, Don. Irma and I are happy to do it. You just focus on getting better and hopefully we'll see you tomorrow okay" she said making her way to the door and resting her hand on the frame.
"Okay"
"Anyways I have to get going I promised my dad I'd be home for dinner."
"Oh sure no problem, I'll see you tomorrow then"
"I'm counting on it, bye"
…..
The following morning Donnie was feeling much better and was given the all clear to go back to school that day. As the boy's were leaving Yoshi stops his second youngest and warns him not to push himself too hard. "To be young is to know no limits to one's stamina. To become stronger, one must first know oneself."
"I don't understand…" Donnie started looking up at his father confuzed.
With a light chuckle Yoshi expland "simply put my son, it mean although you are young your stamia still has its limits and you must know when to stop before you go to far."
"Oh- well dont worry Otosan I promise I'll take it easy today."
"Thank you Donatello that is all I ask. Now hurry up or you'll miss your bus."
With a nodd he took off.
...
Donnie coming back to school on Thursday. Gets teased for fainting in school. He's embarrassed that the whole school has been spreading rumors about him and that no one cares to hear the real story. It was just because of his asthma nothing more nothing less but there were making it sounded way worse then what it was.
Almost all of his teachers had called him aside to ask if he was okay, which just annoyed him. He knows they were doing their job and seeing if he was okay but he couldn't help but feeling that most teachers wouldn't care for every teen that called in sick, it must have been the rumors that caused them to panic. Thinking he was a medicinal liability or something.
