Over Protective Toothless

It was one of those days where it was just sunny, no wind, and happy Vikings all around enjoying the rare warmth Berk would get every once and awhile.

Everyone was laughing, playing in the ocean, riding dragons and all in all the day was perfect.

Well it was perfect for everyone but Toothless.

Since his rider seemed to be busy with…whatever humans do, Toothless has found himself getting used to being Alpha.

The transition came with some getting used to but he found himself strangely liking being in charge, Toothless thinks he could get used to it…in reality he got used to it the moment the other dragons gave him fish, meaning Toothless no longer had to suffer the days where his rider wouldn't feed him. No more dragon neglect for Toothless!

Now, Toothless knows he should be with his rider, helping out with other dragons or even getting rid of some of the ice that was basically everywhere. Instead Toothless found himself watching the friends of his rider, well; in reality he was watching 2 specific people: A young blonde woman with the familiar shoulder pads and THE enemy.

Toothless doesn't care if his rider and just about everyone says that this strong new human is a friend, Toothless stills hates him for trying to hurt his rider and for almost killing his favorite female (okay maybe the last one wasn't entirely the males doing but he still gave the command).

He knows that he's being paranoid but his protective instincts are still there for the female that Toothless considers almost as important as his rider, the female gets extra points since she's the one that actually FEEDS him when he's hungry and now takes him flying when his friend is too busy.

"Okay, Eret too properly train a dragon you must first be completely weaponless or the dragon will loose trust in you…"

Soo boring!

Yep, instead of being out with the other dragons or with his friend, Toothless finds himself watching how the young adults are trying to help the new male train dragons. Personally, Toothless doesn't understand the point in this new male knowing how to train dragons. He could still be the dragon trapper Toothless met and try to continue trapping dragons. This could be some sort of trick and the humans are falling into it! Especially his riders mate!

Toothless knows they aren't truly mated and that fact alone frustrates the new Alpha. His 2 favorite humans have been doing this mating ritual for years and he just doesn't understand why they just don't mate already…Stupid humans and their weird mating rituals.

Maybe I should help them? Like give my rider a few pointers or something.

Come to think about it Toothless always did wonder why humans suck the others faces…and if they lay eggs.

Toothless is a curious dragon that has yet to fully understand humans and their weird ways of living.

"Since you apparently bonded with Skullcrusher who is a Rumblehorn belonging to the Tracker Class. You have to be aware of the Rumblehorn's statistics which are: Attack- 11, Speed- 7, Firepower- 15, Armor- 12, Shot Limit- 4, Jaw Strength- 4, they have no venom, and their stealth is currently unknown…"

Toothless literally groans in utter boredom as the smart fat one continues to go on and on about Skullcrusher. The only time Toothless will ever tolerate the smart fat ones constant blabber on dragons is when he's talking about him. What, Toothless likes hearing on how he's the fastest dragon alive and the stealthiest dragon of them all.

"Okay, Fishleg's I think Eret gets the point now," His rider's mate says and Toothless cant help but silently thank her, he doesn't think he would've survived another one of the smart fat ones blabber without falling asleep.

"But he needs to know that-"

"Eret's already ridden Skullcrusher, I don't think he needs to know all the statistics," His black haired buffy short one interjected.

"He does need to know the statistics but I don't think we should go into that right now," His riders mate said.

"But-"

"Whatever, you guys teach him, I'm gonna go eat something," The black haired short one said leaving, maybe to go and find Hookfang and then get something o eat for both of them.

Take me with you! Wait- never mind.

"Yeah, I gotta feed Meatlug too. See ya guys later," The smart fat one said, also walking out.

Bring me fish while you're at it.

"I'm off too," The blonde stupid male one said.

Lucky idiot.

"Come on Ruff, we gotta feed Barf and Belch," He adds dragging his sister along. Toothless knows the only reason he's doing that is because he doesn't want to be around the enemy anymore. Maybe he's secretly smart.

"Aww, but I wanna stay with Eret, Son of Eret!" The blonde female stupid one whines as her twin drags her out.

Toothless had to hold in a snort. Not only is the male stupid looking (which is saying something since his rider has this weird looking thing going on…seriously flying on him wasn't enough he just had too fly on his own!) but even his name is ridiculous (which again is saying something considering his riders equally ridiculous name).

Now that Toothless thinks about it, he's pretty hungry too. But he doubts his rider would feed him anytime soon, since he last saw his rider talking with some Vikings.

And we're back to the dragon neglect aren't we.

Maybe he can convince the female to give him fish.

Toothless walked out of his "hiding" place in the shadows and casually walked over to his female (he figures if he has a male who rides him why not have a female that actually feeds him on time).

As he approaches closer, he comes to the realization that he doesn't like the close proximity his female is to the enemy.

"I suppose I should thank you sparing me from one of those infamous speeches I heard that Fishleg's gives," The enemy chuckles making his female give out a short snort.

"If Hiccup were here he would say it would be a fate worse than death," His female said chuckling seemingly fond of a memory. Toothless himself let out a small snort also knowing his rider would say something like that.

"I have no doubt about that at all," The enemy laughed.

The enemy makes a move to step closer to his female which Toothless is not having any of it.

Toothless quickly gets in between both his female and his current un-favorite human (once again saying something since he knows a large ranging of annoying Vikings *dragon cough* the two blonde idiots), he growls at the male while crouching protectively in front of his female.

You are not getting any close to my- I mean my riders female, dragon trapper!

"Toothless! What are you doing?" His female says from behind him.

"Is everything alright?" The enemy asks holding his hands up. Apparently even the mighty dragon trapper is afraid of a Night Fury, Toothless has to hold in a smirk but decides to let out a warning growl when the enemy decides to try and walk around him.

No, No, No! Nope! You are not getting any closer! Serious Stormfly where are you!?

Usually Stormfly was his partner in crime when it came to warning off the males but since Stormfly has apparently taken a liking to the enemy, going as far as to treat him like a toy, Toothless has had to deal with the enemy alone. Traitor! And here I thought you were my friend!

"Yeah, he just gets like this when another male that isn't Hiccup gets too close to me. Sometimes he'll even growl at Hiccup a little," His female explains trying walk around him but Toothless isn't having any of it.

If you think I'm gonna let that male get any closer to you, you have another thing coming.

"Should I get some fish?" The enemy asks uncertain trying to avoid eye contact with Toothless.

You are not gonna bribe me with fish Trapper! I am the mighty Night Fury, Alpha of all dragons and I will not be tricked with fish! …No matter how hungry I am!

Toothless growled louder and crouched lower to prove his point.

"I don't think Toothless is going to accept fish any time soon," His female said.

Not from this male I won't!

Astrid wasn't stupid. No she was far from it. She knows exactly why Toothless is acting like he's acting and she couldn't feel any real remorse since its Toothless' own way of saying he cares.

Sure sometimes he gets a little too over protective of her but hey if Hiccup had to deal with Toothless acting like a mother dragon when he woke up after losing his leg than Astrid can deal with a protective Toothless trying to scare someone he most likely hates.

"What should I do then?" Eret asked not liking how Toothless was staring at him. It was like Toothless was looking at the Green Death or Drago Bludvist himself. Yep being glared at by a Night Fury was like being glared at by death itself, in a way screaming you're next!

"Can you go get Hiccup?" Astrid said.

In reality she didn't need Hiccup at all, she just told him that so he'll leave. And so she can deal with an over-protective Night Fury.

"You sure? I was after all the best Dragon Trapper, I'm positive I can tame a Night fury to"- Toothless growled louder- "I'll be back."

Yeah, that's right! Fear the mighty Night Fury! Run away and never return!

Toothless smirked at the retreating form before turning around to find his female glaring at him with her arms crossed.

Toothless wasn't stupid. He was over-protective but he wasn't stupid. He knew she wasn't happy with him.

Okay, you have to admit for a Dragon Trapper he's pretty lame.

Unlike his rider when he would get in trouble (which was pretty often) Toothless knew exactly what to do to not get hurt like his rider.

Without a second thought Toothless nudged himself between her arms and purred like she has Dragon Nip.

I was just protecting you. It wasn't my fault the guy couldn't take a joke.

"Toothless! Stop! I'm still mad at you!" Astrid said trying to push him off of her but Toothless isn't Hiccup's dragon for nothing, they both share stubbornness and determination…two things Toothless is using to try and have his way.

Toothless responds by knocking her down and proceeded to lick her on the face, and just like his rider, she isn't too fond of having dragon saliva on her face.

"Toothless! I'm serious! If you don't get off me right now, I will seriously stop feeding you extra salmon!" Astrid laughs as Toothless gave her one last lick before he detached himself from her and looked at her cutely.

He watched as his female tried to wipe the saliva away from her face with a slight smile on her face. Only Toothless would do something like that.

"You're a jerk Toothless," Astrid simply said still on the ground.

But you love me anyways.

"But I do love you," She added.

Toothless smiled at her before he moved to lay down next to her with his head on her lap. He knew she wouldn't be angry at him for too long. He was just too loveable and cute to be angry with. No one can ever be angry with Toothless.

Astrid automatically lifted a hand to pet him on the head earning a well prolonged coo of happiness.

It's been a long time since someone pets him with such love and care. Sure Hiccup would show some sort of love towards him (which sadly involve no fish but instead dangerous stunts, seriously what kind of love is that? Almost getting your dragon killed is some twisted way of showing you care) but sometimes it's just nice having someone other than your rider/friend showing that they care about you.

Yes, yes, that's the spot, right there.

Toothless purred when her hands start to scratch him around the neck. After all he's earned it. He defeated a Bewilderbeast and became Alpha, which he's doing a good job at. He deserves some sort of prize that isn't a fish (even though he does love them).

"You know I can handle myself just fine, Toothless," Astrid said still petting him.

I don't care that male was too close to you.

"Don't think I'm stupid Toothless. I know you've been awfully over-protective of both Hiccup and me ever since Drago," Astrid said lowly.

She knew in reality Toothless got more protective of the few humans he cared about ever since he killed Stoick but Astrid wasn't going to say that aloud. Besides she knew that Toothless would never do something like that willingly since he had come to care about Stoick and knowing he did that…well Astrid knew he felt guilty as it is.

She also knew no one on the island blamed the dragon for doing something he was ordered by the Alpha to do but Toothless no matter what anyone told him still blamed himself for firing the killing blast. Even more when he realized that if Stoick hadn't pushed Hiccup out of the way, Toothless would have ended up killing the most important person to him: His best friend. And that thought alone tormented Toothless at night thinking the question: What if it had been Hiccup? What if it had been someone else he cared about? Like Astrid?

The thought tormented him because he knew his female would do something like that. He knew she would do anything to protect the ones she loves. She's proved it plenty of times with his rider, with Stormfly and him.

A lot of people aren't aware but once they entered that circle of people she cares about she would worry about their well being and do anything in her power to ensure their safety. Toothless counts himself lucky to be in that circle because he knows full well that she does worry and care about him enough to sacrifice her well being to protect him (she's proved this when they were captured by Dragon Pirates and the one time they were trapped underground with Whispering Deaths…one just so happened to be his nemesis).

Astrid smiled sadly when she heard Toothless let out a low whine and nuzzles harder against her thighs.

"But you don't have to worry so much about one of us getting hurt any time soon," Astrid says and sighs when Toothless snorts not believing her.

"Okay, so we will get hurt but that's the occupational hazard when living in Berk and Training Dragons," Astrid smiles down at him trying to cheer him up.

"Besides, it's only fun if you get a scar out of it," Astrid grins down at him and she laughed when Toothless let out a moan trying to disguise his snort of amusement.

Stop trying to cheer me up! I'm sad here over not having fish! …And I'm still mad at you for trusting the enemy.

"I'm serious! Don't you have scars that just remind you of the good times?" Astrid asked him before she smirked at him.

"Don't you have some scars representing your love life?" Astrid teased.

Toothless groaned which earned a laugh from the blonde female Viking.

"How many scars do you have about those days as a bachelor Toothless, a few or a dozen?" Astrid laughed.

Toothless groaned louder and covered his ears with his paws trying to forget what she just asked him.

Stop, just stop! My love life is non existent to you! But I do know about yours, thanks to your ability to not being able to keep quiet.

"Tell me Toothless did you do it dragon style or something?" Astrid laughed and Toothless decided that he hated not being able to speak Norse. Oh, if only she knew what he has seen Hiccup and her do when they think they are alone. She would be doing that human thing where their face turns red.

Toothless lifted his head and turned so he can glare at her, his face screaming a mixture of: Of please just stop and if I could talk you would be regretting bringing this topic up.

"Okay, okay, I'll stop. I'll stop bringing up your love life," Astrid chuckled shaking her head. Who knew teasing a dragon about his love life would be so amusing? She wonders if Hiccup did it before.

Toothless nods before he nuzzles his head until its confortable in her lap and her hand goes back to petting him. She doesn't know when she stopped petting him (maybe when she began teasing him) but her hand finds its familiar rhythm on his head and along his neck.

Both just sit there, enjoying the quiet evening Berk is giving them. After the Bewilderbeast attack, no one has had the chance to relax completely, well, how could they when most of the village is trampled, busted and covered in ice?

It was relaxing and soothing being in the presence of a friend whom you long ago have shared unforgotten moments and memories with. Sure their bond isn't as strong as the bond Toothless shares with Hiccup or the bond Astrid shares with Stormfly, but both Toothless and Astrid have come to accept and appreciate their own unique bond. A bond they have forged together through the years through dangerous situations where they had to trust the other to survive, moments between friends and family, and of course moments like this where it's just the two of them enjoying the others company.

"Thank you, Toothless. Seems like after 5 years of knowing each other we still look at for the other," Astrid said looking up at the darkening sky. Shouldn't Eret have been back with Hiccup by now? Astrid wasn't really complaining since she had Toothless to keep her company but Hiccup still isn't fond of the idea of her alone when it's dark. He must know Toothless with her.

Toothless grumbled agreeing with her.

"You know Eret isn't the enemy anymore right, Sweetie?" Astrid asked. She began calling him that after the whole Whispering Death ordeal they went through a year ago, but Toothless loves it even more when she would call him that. Hiccup has his own nickname for him so it's nice that his female also has her own special name for him.

You are not convincing me by calling me Sweetie.

"I know you're angry with Eret after he almost hurt us the first time we met him but he isn't such a bad guy," Astrid told Toothless.

She needs Toothless to trust him since he's now going to live in Berk and there might come a time where both would need to rely on the other to survive.

I'll trust him…when fish start flying.

Astrid could sense Toothless wasn't going to forgive Eret so easily so she decided to bring up something that not even Hiccup knows. She's been meaning to tell him for a while since she hates keeping things from him but they've both been busy with different responsibilities, him with Chief duties and her with dragon duties. She will tell him when she gets the chance.

"You know Toothless; if it wasn't for Eret the rest of us riders would have been at the bottom of the ocean right?" Astrid said.

Wait what!?

Toothless immediately lifted his head to look at his female and found she was telling him the truth. But he didn't understand. Weren't they safe in Berk- Wait! They were in the Drago's Dragon Traps meaning that they either sneaked in or they got captured.

Please don't tell me you got captured.

"After Hiccup and you left, I got worried that something happened to either of you. I guess you could call it an instinct knowing when one of you is in danger. So I got the brilliant idea to kidnap Eret and blackmail him into taking us to Drago," Astrid said still looking up at the sky. She noted that it was slightly cloudy so maybe they'll get rain soon. Good it would help in getting rid of the ice.

Toothless stared at her in shock.

"We found him of course but we ended up getting captured and almost thrown into the ocean," Astrid said not wanting to remember how it was her stupid idea that almost got not only her friends killed but could've been the reason in why Drago pushed his attack earlier.

But she felt that wasn't something for Toothless' ears but rather Hiccup's ears. That doesn't mean she can't tell him what would've happened to them if it wasn't for Eret intervening.

"Toothless…if Eret hadn't intervened…Ruffnut, Tuffnut, Fishlegs, Snotlout…and me…we would've been tossed into the ocean and left to drown," Astrid said still not looking at Toothless because she didn't want to see the face of realization of what almost happened to her and their friends.

Toothless lay there. He didn't want to believe that not only did he almost loose his female, but his rider almost lost his mate. And Toothless knew that if his rider did indeed loose his mate it would most likely be the end of happiness altogether.

But the more Toothless thought about it, the more he came to realize that if the other male hadn't had intervened the more likely his female would've been dead.

His riders mate should be in the ocean if it wasn't for the male that luckily chose to switch sides to save them from a horrible fate.

Toothless then realized why everyone trusted the ene- male so fast. If it wasn't for him, they would have all been dead.

Toothless groaned wrapping his tail around his female and bringing his wings around her. You couldn't blame him for the sudden want to keep her close. He just found out she almost died. But Toothless knew his rider wouldn't be very happy with the news she just told him. In fact Toothless knew his rider would take the news harder when he realized his mate was close to being thrown in the like an unwanted fish.

Fine, I'll be nicer to the male. Only because he saved your life.

Toothless moaned wrapping himself tighter around her.

But don't expect me to let him get closer to you than half the length of my tail.

Astrid let out a laugh knowing she managed to get him to be a little less…hostile to Eret. Now Toothless had one more possible human ally he can count on when he needs it.

Not to mention it would help Hiccup knowing Toothless trusted the rider of his late father's dragon.

"Don't worry, Toothless, even though half of the village females are into Eret's big muscles, I'm still into the fishbone we now call a Chief," Astrid smiled down at Toothless who gave her his infamous gummy smile.

"Is that anyway of treating your new Chief, Milady?"

Out of instinct Toothless whipped his head to the direction of the voice and growled, tightening his grip on his female willing to protect her from the unknown threat. Again, you can't really blame him for being over-protective of the only constant female in his life for the past 5 years.

But once he realized the voice was familiar (should be since it's the first voice he hears every day) and the familiar clank of metal hitting against the floor, Toothless knew this was his rider.

"Oh, nothing babe, just talking to Toothless," Astrid brushed off hoping that was the only thing he heard. Judging by the confused look he gave both of them that was indeed all he heard. Astrid mentally sighed. She noted Eret wasn't with Hiccup meaning either Hiccup convinced Eret to stay behind or he didn't want to encounter Toothless for the time being. She supposed the latter.

"O-Kay, so why did Eret come and get me while telling me my dragon wanted to eat him?" Hiccup asked both of them crossing his arms and giving his girlfriend and best friend a look. Hiccup was well aware that Astrid and Toothless are partners in crime and both have the ability to get away with whatever they do (Astrid has blue eyes, Toothless green eyes…and well, Hiccup is weak).

Toothless snorts unwrapping himself from his female to go and nuzzle his rider who eagerly scratches his head in affection.

I wasn't going to eat him. I was just warning him to stay away from my- I mean your female. You're welcome.

"Nothing Toothless was just being over-protective," Astrid dismissed smiling at the interaction both friends showed. She missed Stormfly and wondered where the Nadder went off to. No doubt out to steal chicken (a habit she got from Toothless who constantly steals fish from the fishers) or looking into an ice wall.

"Again?" Hiccup asks knowing full well of the other times Toothless got protective of Astrid, the last one being the encounter with the Whispering Deaths that still sends shivers down Hiccup's spine.

"Yeah, although I think Toothless did it more for your benefit than mine," Astrid said getting up and brushing her skirt down.

"What makes you say that Milady?" Hiccup asked leaning slowing his movements on Toothless' head. Toothless groans from the lack of affection and immediately goes to Astrid begging for it.

She complies with a laugh at Hiccup's betrayed look.

"Every time Eret so much as looks at me Toothless growls and looks like he's gonna pounce and rip him to shreds," Astrid explains.

Though she loves Toothless and knows his intentions are well meant, she knows she can handle herself if necessary.

"You think I put Toothless up for it?" Hiccup laughed.

Astrid looked at him confused. She thought for sure Hiccup asked Toothless to do something like that but then she realized why would Hiccup do something like that. They both trusted each other with their lives and knew nothing could separate them

Astrid groaned at her own stupid-ness and ceased her motions on Toothless' head making the dragon groan.

Really, no love for the new Alpha? I'm staring to feel neglected again from both my humans.

"No, it just seemed odd even for Toothless, I thought you had something to do with it," Astrid said embarrassed.

Hiccup chuckled at her forming blush. He always did liked it when she blushed, it made him feel nice knowing he had that affect on her.

"I didn't put him up to it. I guess he did it on his own," Hiccup said looking at his friend smiling.

"He wouldn't need to do if you just ask already," Astrid muttered crossing her arms.

"Ask what?" Hiccup said turning back to her.

Astrid unfolded her should and shrugged exaggerated.

"Nothing, don't worry about it but hey I gotta go find Stormfly before she gets into the Mead Hall, again," Astrid said making Hiccup frown. He was hoping he could take her on some sort of date but knew that a hungry Stormfly in the Mead Hall was almost as worse as a hungry Toothless on a fish rampage.

"Ya, got it, see you later Milady," Hiccup said giving her a short peck.

Astrid smiled at him before she turned to Toothless and gave him one last scratch before making her way towards the gate. She turned back to face them. Maybe- no, not right now.

"Oh, I suggest feeding Toothless he's wanted fish for sometime now and I was going to feed him before you showed up, so…" Astrid trailed

"Don't worry, I'll feed him," Hiccup assured.

Yes finally! I'm finally getting my fish!

Astrid smiled one more time before she turned around and left. She could already hear the angry protest coming from the Mead Hall and decided to pick up her pace. Oh Odin's ghost, Stormfly stay away from the chicken!

Hiccup stared after her with a smile on his face,

Toothless walked up and sat besides him.

"I guess I should ask her huh," Hiccup mused.

Yes, ask her, you both have been doing this mating ritual for years now. It's annoying and frustrating.

"What if she says no?" Hiccup said.

Are you kidding me? Of course she'll say yes.

"I don't know it just seems too soon," Hiccup continued his train of thought.

Too soon? If anything it's getting late.

"Maybe I'll ask her in a month," Hiccup decided.

The look Toothless gave him made him gulp.

You got to be kidding me.

"Okay I'll ask her sometime this week," Hiccup bargained.

Fine. I suppose you could do worse.

"By the way Toothless, good job at keeping Eret away," Hiccup said earning a snort of agreement.

What Astrid doesn't know won't hurt her…but if she finds out Hiccup would be the one getting hurt.

I wouldn't need to do this if you only ask her already,

"Look Bud, I already have half the village asking me about when I'll finally ask her and trust me when I say this I will ask her…someday," Hiccup said muttering the last part.

Toothless groans before whacking his rider behind the head with his tail.

You ask her or I will.

AN- As a thank you for all the followers, favorite and reviews I've received from this short fanfic I've decided to add this little chapter. I've seen a lot of fanfics out there that have shown a jealous Hiccup reacting to the (obvious) attraction Eret seemed to have for Astrid so I thought; well I could do something with that. I'm not sure if I'll add more chapters or make it into a one shot series but maybe I'll do something if someone asks for a request.

Anyways thanks for the support.

Sincerely,

Annabelle.

PS: Maybe the characters seem a little too ooc but hey that's how it turned out. I'm still working on the characterization.
